SkySafari 6 Plus App Description & Overview

What is skysafari 6 plus app? SkySafari 6 Plus goes beyond most basic astronomy apps by providing you with a full-featured space simulator with telescope control and Augmented Reality (AR) mode.

Note that there is no discount upgrade path from SkySafari 6 Plus to SkySafari 6 Pro. Choose carefully!

Here's what's new in version 6:

1) Complete support for iOS 13 and iPhone 11. We got you covered and release regular updates.

2) Clouds and Astronomy. Two words that rarely go together. Rewritten from the ground up, SkySafari 6 Plus will (optionally) back up all of your observing data in our secure cloud storage and make it easily accessible to multiple devices as well as from our new web interface, LiveSky.com.

3) We Have The Best Stars. Precise, modern and deep. We’ve updated our star catalog to use the latest and greatest, UCAC5 star catalog.

4) Observers First. A redesign of our tools puts the active observer first. Quick access to features like your equipment, observing sites, lists, and observations make it easy and enjoyable to get out, observe, and record your observations.

5) Graph It. The completely new graph tool will give a quick visual representation of an object’s altitude above the horizon. Essential for planning your night’s observations.

6) Plan It. Make the most of your time under the stars. Our updated planner is a powerful tool that lets you create a list of targets for your observing session with filters like object types, specific time ranges, constellation, catalog, and more. Plan it and get more done.

7) Say It. Ever just wanted to just yell at your device and tell it what to do!? SkySafari 6 adds basic voice control for a wide range of operations. Say “select Jupiter,” “search for Titan,” “center on Polaris” and SkySafari will do the work for you. Yelling optional.

8) Tilt It. Every old astronomy app these days lets your tilt and pan your device to show different parts of the sky, but who else lets you control your telescope that way!? “Tilt to slew” is an optional mode allowing you to keep your eye in the eyepiece, and, using the accelerometers in your device, gently translate the movements of your hands into smooth telescope motion.

9) Share It. SkySafari 6 is more than just a mobile app, it’s a new system to help organize and share your observing experiences. With a free signup, you can see and share your observing data from our web portal, LiveSky.com! Affordable premium memberships add online editing, so you can not only view, but edit your observations, add new observing sites, manage your equipment and more. Finally, (coming soon) you can view, edit and manage your settings files with SkySafari Web, our fully functional web version.

If you haven't used SkySafari 6 Plus before, here's what you can do with it:

• Hold your device up, and SkySafari 6 Plus will find stars, constellations, planets, and more!

• Simulate the night sky up to 10,000 years in the past or future! Animate meteor showers, conjunctions, eclipses, and other celestial events.

• Learn the history, mythology, and science of astronomy! Browse over 1500 object descriptions and astronomical images. Explore NASA space missions! Stay up-to-date with SkyWeek for all major sky events every day!

The Best astronomy App; Sky Week doesn’t function.. I enjoy the Sky Safari Plus and the Free Sky Safari apps. One problem. There is no longer connection to Sky Week. To contact anyone regarding the issue, you are sent to an off site that simply doesn’t work to get help. I’m hoping someone will see the problem and fix it. It’s been down since January 2020.

Great app!. Skysafari plus gives me accurate information on the sky! I use it to see what is in the sky now and also check visibilities of upcoming celestial events. Only lacking feature that I could use would "what satellite did I just see?" (Identity viewed satellites).

Joe Porter. Incredible software with lots of options and features. Easy to use and provides me with quick access to astronomical events on my IPhone X. A word to the developer’s, Keep up the good work!!!

Improved from Great Already. Only praise for this version. One question: purchased HR diagram display and can’t find it.

THE Best. SkySafari Plus is simply THE best planetarium/scope control software available on the market. As an amateur astronomer, this is one of the essential tools to enjoy the hobby to its maximum. The ability to plan observing sessions, log observations, and learn about the universe make it indispensable. This app is well worth the investment. Whether you observe using your naked eyes, binoculars or telescopes, this app is for you.

Not working for me.. Very sluggish when connected. Bullseye not moving. Alignment failure. Regret buying the app and Skyfi, waste of money. Couldn’t find support phone number. Want my money back or fix it!

Zero Support. Before you purchase any of the SkySafari products you should know that should have any issues, you will receive absolutely no support whatsoever...only referred to a community forum. The producers of this product are too busy collecting the revenue stream to support their customers.

Very Detailed!. Having used stargazing apps in the past, both free and paid, this has been one of the easier, more detailed, and user friendly apps. The video tutorials and clearly labeled icons make it super easy to navigate and personalize. I just got my first telescope and this app makes it super easy to locate and observe the night sky!

Great app!. I use this app almost daily on both my old iPad and newer iPhone 6s. It's very useful as both a learning tool and a navigation tool to use while observing.

Wifi connection problems. This could be great APP except for some limitations. The positive is, it has a great display of the sky with many helpful tools. One of the tools I like is being able to save my DSO viewed objects. The however is that it is very difficult to acquire a clean link between the iPad and the Celestron Nexstar Evolution mount. With WiFi. With having WiFi as the only available link it becomes useless in a populated area with 2 or more fellow star gazers also using wifi. If they could update the APP to allow a mini USB connection passing thru the Hand Controller. There is another App that I stumbled across That utilized this connection. It uses a mini USB cable that connects to the HC and passes the commands onto the mount. There is also a path for EQ mounts where the connection is direct, bypassing the HC. Even though the APP is free it does not come up to the quality of the user interface and display SkySafari. One thing I said earlier is the ability to save your viewing history and printing out a hard copy. If this app incorporated a USB connection it would have a 6 plus star rating.

Simply the best night sky app. I have been using SkySafari for almost four years now and recently added an AVX to my inventory. Using SkySafari’s scope control has taken my hobby to the next level. Can’t say enough good about it!

Unable to Synch w iOptron AZMP. I have the latest software installed on an iOptron AZMP, and cannot synch to this version of SkySafari. I selected iOptron AZMP and other AltAZ settings in SkySafari and entered the correct IP and subnet, but cannot connect. Tried multiple times but will not connect. F.Y.I. the iOptron AZMP will connect with a NOOK tablet, so the problem is not with the iOptron AZMP, the problem is with SkySafari. Please advise, this is very disappointing.

Decent on fixed stars; couldn’t point to comet Neowise.... Search & align always nearly 40 degrees off, but good on any fixed stars - not sure what the issue is. Date & time of night seemed O.K.

Still an incredible bargain. This app is a must-have for any astronomer. With one foot in visual and the other in imaging it gets used regularly. When on sale it is the deal of the century. I appreciate that the add-ons haven’t been appropriated from regular features and that the support is solid.

Data out of date!. I’m still seeing SkyWeek info from the end of December 2019 and we are in April now. Also the comet is Mag 2? I thought this was going to be fixed in the new year. Would love it if if the compass button was always in reach. Also Moon often says “does not set” when it does so after midnight.

The best!. After having used the “family” of Sky Safari apps, I am convinced these are the best star and space observation apps on the market (App Store). The Sky Safari 6 plus is full of features, facts, and lots of “cool toys” to keep an individual busy for a long time learning our solar system (and beyond). I had a little problem with a download recently but it was quickly remedied with the recent download. If you’re at all interested in observing or learning the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies, I highly recommend this app.

Fantastic!. Can’t say enough about this incredible product! Extremely impressed.

Highly customizable, powerful tool. I’ve been using Sky Safari for a few years and am delighted by its versatility. It has a wealth of data, including surface maps for all of the planets and many of the moons, and even the thousands of man-made satellites. One of my favorite features is the ability to orbit planets. I used this feature to verify the visuals for a maneuver in The Expanse, and to debunk the fakes that are claimed to be from Perseverance. It’s easy to connect to a telescope mount with inexpensive hardware. I would like to see a more powerful mode for moving the mount that simulates alt/az motion on an equatorial mount, as well as easier navigation to points in the sky—right now that only works if you have a target in the app’s database I would love to see the ability to add objects. Great workhorse!

Indispensable. This is the Must Have accessory for all the observers I know. Extremely capable, very easy to use. The Standard.

Great app. I use this all the time for Astro photos. Haven’t even used all the features yet.

Glitch. Sky safari 6 plus seems to have a glitch. The setting for horizon and sky does not work when you show grid with equatorial coordinates. So you set horizon and sky for “opaque” or anything else and you get what you expect with grid set to horizon, but not with any of the other 3 coordinate systems. It used to work and then suddenly stopped a few weeks ago. Very annoying. This works fine on the pro version on my mac.

well, it worked once. i purchased this for both iPasOS and MacOS and support is non-existent, referring me to forums where the most recent posts are a year old. on April 23 i used Sky Safari Plus (iPadOS) for the first time to control my Celestron NexStar 6se, and all worked fine. we then had rain for weeks, and on May 11 i tried to use it and it connected fine but after many failed alignment attempts (not me, the stars were aligned with the reticle in my ASI294mc) i gave up. last night, May 13, it wouldn’t even connect, gave the Connection Failure dialog box multiple times, even after completely powering off the scope and quitting/restarting the app. i then immediately started up Celestron Sky Portal and it not only connected, but alignment was perfect the first time. i tried again this morning to connect via Sky Safari Plus on both iPad Pro and iPhone 12 mini, with Connection Failure again. useless investment.

Unable to import observing lists. I don’t know what’s the issue but I’ve been unable to import observation lists on both my iPhone and iPad. The name of the observation list is created but no actual observations are imported.

Good planning CCD camera view. I am impressed at being able to combine my CCD camera view and telescope optics to get a FOV. As I zoom in on a target, the FOV maintains aspect ratio to the target. I’ve checked a few and indeed, the size of the object matches what I’ve gotten on my CCD sensor. This is very handy for planning because some targets would be too big or small for my FOV so I can find a more suitable subject for a photo. App has very good graphics compared to others I’ve used and the size and orientation look correct.

CD43. Absolutely beautiful! The best astronomy app I have used. Highly recommended it. A most have for anyone that loves astronomy and science!

An indispensible program. Whether you are planning an observing session, star-hopping to a dim and obscure planetary nebula, or simply learning more about astronomy, SkySafari is the amateur astromer’s ultimate companion.

Best out there. SkySafari is by far the best planetarium software out there, at a reasonable price. There are professional programs, but they cost hundreds of dollars. For serious observers SkySafari does it all, and is affordable.

Best of them all. Spend the money and don’t waste your time on any of the other apps. This is by far the one to get.

It’s good. I am still figuring out how to get the best out of it, but this app is worth the cost. VERY nice for traveling to new latitudes. Looking forward to using this app to do visual exploring of Southern Hemisphere stars.

Hard getting it to control my telescope.. I like the app but had a hard time getting it to control the telescope. Finally I was able to connect via the app the came with the telescope and then this app finally started to work.

The best app for stargazing and more. Don’t waste your money on any other app. Spend the money on this app and you will not be disappointed. It is very good, though not perfect, at providing accurate information regarding the piece of sky at which your device is aimed. It does suffer the occasional hiccup with detecting the compass heading that your device is pointing, but that is unavoidable.

Best astronomy investment I’ve made!. This software is so intuitive and useful, I stared using many features minutes after downloading. Selection and navigation is quick and smooth. You get a lot for the tiny price!

Features. Still new to this, but I'm finding lots of useful features.

Better Than I Expected!. This app is smooth and powerful. I will like learning how to use this great software. During my first session SkySafari alerted me to an HST pass. My ten-year-old observing partner and I enjoyed watching the low-angle pass on my iPhone almost as much as we would have liked directly observing the orbiting observatory. Tonight I loaded a second copy of this app on my iPad and watched my niece load another copy on her iPhone. It still works great!

Good app. Confusing reason for update.. This business model of making a new version as a new app, asking users to repurchase it, and removing the old version from the store is confusing. I uninstalled my previous version to install the new version, after being prompted to download the new version from within the app. I realized after installing the new version that features had been removed, and that I needed to purchase this “plus” version to re-enable the features I lost. I couldn’t find the previous version in the App Store, so I just paid for this. The developer has pointed out that the old version can still be downloaded from the App Store in the previously purchased section of my account. Thanks.

Great BUT needs feature. I use this app all the time but found one issue. When looking at the entire sky mag limit is set to something reasonable like 7, but once you zoom in, ie: telescope fov, the mag limit SHOULD change to the selected telescope. I observe variable stars and when I move to a variable its really difficult to identify the variable when I zoom in because most of the stars are missing. If I change the star magnitude limit, when I zoom out again the sky is filled with stars. Magnitude limit should be set by telescope+eyepiece and fov reticle combination.

SkySafari3. This app is truly amazing! Can’t wait to use it with telescope via Bluetooth!

Fantastic app for the stars!. I’ve been using SkySafari + for years. I love that such a powerful App lives on my phone so I can refer to it anytime at home or in the field. It works great to control my Goto telescope for observing and astrophotography, and functions perfectly in remote places where there is no cell coverage. Most excellent for beginners and experienced users a like. Don’t hesitate to get this app!

The Best?. I think this app now the best and fastest for what I need. I never thought I was going to turn away from my previous app - but, I did.

Safari indeed. This app has brought me hours and hours of pleasure. I use it to wander our galaxy, requesting information as I go, and because the app also slews my telescope, all I have to do is point where I’m interested in viewing and the telescope follows. Six of five stars ! Omaha Steve

Screen Jitters. Best astronomy app on planet earth. But my app has developed the jitters in compass mode on iphone XR. The screen shakes and the text goes on and off. Maybe a bug. I’ve reset phone, no fix. Help!!! The best app ever!!

Challenging but interesting. My daughter wanted a simple app to help her use the telescope she got for Christmas. This isn’t it; it’s much more complicated than we were expecting. I suppose it works, and if you’re a professional astronomer it would make sense. I’m not sure though, because we don’t understand the majority of the features. For peasants like us, the compass feature is all we need, and it wasn’t easy to find, as it’s on a scroll at the bottom. We needed “sky for dummies.” After about an hour into messing with this complicated app, we found Venus on the app and then saw it in the sky, and a little 8 year old was really excited about it. So there’s a win.

Safari. Great astronomy application. Easy to use and search for objects.

Needs some polish and attention to detail. This app could be insanely great and well crafted if some more attention to detail was paid. As you can see from the screenshots, the UI has a bunch of slightly janky spacing and padding issues. If these were fixed throughout the app it would feel much higher quality.

Probably the best sky observation map out there. I love this app. I was looking for an app that would simulate how the planets would look, particularly the size of them using the different optic equipment combinations for my telescope. This app has not disappointed and is now my go to app.

Great app. Very impressed with this upgrade. I had the free version of this before and thought it was okay, nothing special. This version really does everything. I do my image planning and future projects with it. Only reason it's getting 4 stars is that I can't get the laptop version going. It keeps saying that I need the 6 plus version to get in. Which is what I have. Other than that it does everything I need.

Great for learning. This app is amazing visually and I love that you can point to two stars and it will tell you the distance those stars are from each other that is awesome. But I can not get app to work well enough with my 5 se and skyq-link when it does sync right it seems to always take the longest route to an object and the controls are not good either to many icons. I see a lot of bad ratings for the Celestron sky portal app but it works great for me.

Great APP for Star Gazers. Love this APP Tracking stars, comets and planets. Follow SpaceX and the ISS, track Hubble... Learn something new every time you log in. Great Virtual App’s as well.

I see why it is the choice of most of the astronomers in my local club!. I have used other star finder apps and they are great for casual viewing and learning the night sky. But, if you’ve got a telescope and want to view a wider variety of night objects, this is a great choice. It has so many tools that help locate and log those objects.

Love the app but for one little hiccup. I absolutely love this app. I’ve used just about every version that’s been released, and I’m very happy with it. That said, I also love the calendar function that shows me the upcoming events but touching the button to “VIEW” the event on the map won’t work. I hope it’s fixed soon, and I know for people who are newer to astronomy it would really help them find things more quickly.

Great App. Very useful app in planing my observing sessions. I use Stellarium Pro as well. I find this app more user friendly pertains to object info. Cant wait to connect to my 8”Dob when it arrives. A big thumbs up

Crashes consistently after entering custom equipment on an iPad Pro 11. After adding new equipment, the app freezes and eventually crashed. Happens for all equipment I’ve created finder, Barlow, reducer, eye pieces. Fortunately, the new entry’s are not lost.

Great App. Great app—has many tools for planning an observation session. Only problem I found pertains to the field rotation of the FOV indicator. I think it’s programmed with an equatorial mount pointed at the north celestial pole in mind. As such, a bit problematic if you’re in the southern hemisphere. Again, minor problem in an otherwise great app.

SkySafariPlus. Difficult to use, unable to utilise real time/directional

Quality. Well worth the coin

Upgrade costs. Hey, I’ll start with how amazing these apps are, I have been using SkySafari for a while now, it rekindled my interest in astronomy and I’m out there most nights. Just a little annoyed that I have to pay full price to get pro mode, would like an option to upgrade for a cheaper price considering I already paid for SkySafari 6?

weird but cool. I like it because its fun weird just like me lets get to the point i like it because its funny when you put uranis😁

A Stellar Companion. This is an excellent stellar companion. As everyone with a phone or tablet knows there are apps, and then there are your favourite apps. The two or three you use everyday, all the time, apps that have become extensions of your connection to reality, and conduits of your creative expression and contribution. For me Sky Safari 6 plus is that app. Its interactivity is intuitive and easy to use. The science is thorough and impeccable, while still maintaining the awe and mystery that first drew us to the night sky. The descriptions are adapted from STARS by Jim Kaler; Professor Emeritus of Astronomy, University of Illinois and embody the same qualities. I am doing star research from an astrological perspective and Sky Safari 6 plus lists the stars in Ecliptic Longitude, as well as the other co-ordinate systems, so it is very easy to convert this to degree and sign of the zodiac if that is something that interests you. The data is in real time and I use it to check my list (and arithmetic) for accuracy. This exercise means I move around the app often, seeing and learning from its structure, which I highly value. If you love the sky you will love this app.

Best version yet!. Many confusing or misplaced settings have been moved to more logical locations. I particularly like the more logical Observe button with it's easier record function and putting the expand / contract in one place. The addition of the LiveSky is genius. I could go on for a while; but, best of all is the new pricing! Well done!

The must have!. I’m using this software from years.

Update to sky safari plus 6 crashes. The problem with Safari was resolved by reinstalling the app as recommended. Thanks. All is wonderful.

Perfection. So easy to use, it almost feels like cheating! Highly detailed, very thorough catalogue of stars to 11-12 magnitude, make simple work of star hopping. Great for the casual or serious observer. Worth every single dollar!

Great update. Everything functions properly(SynScan)...thanks

It’s like an onion. This app has layers of awesomeness. I keep discovering new things it can do. It’s a little overwhelming at first, but this is a really great tool to use with my first telescope (8 inch Dobsonian).

Annoying spam. As soon as they release a new version, they are spamming you with notifications to buy the new app.

Looking good. Setup was easy and smooth no glitches or issues with connections.

Great app but…. Excellent ease of use and huge database but it won’t auto connect and align with my Celestron advanced vx. I use Celestron Sky Portal for ‘go to’ functions and Safari Plus only as a database. Disappointing since both apps were developed by the same company.

Awesome!. Just what I was looking for...

Awesome. Best sky software ever. It even lets you put the names of the Messier objects in the sky chart. Super cool

Not working. Must be some bugs they havent sorted yet but will not connect to my scope. Had to go back to other program. This was a waste of money

Best app ever. This app is not just fun but a need for computer assisted astronomy

Had to get a refund. Don’t let my experience discourage you. This app is well made but I found there to be far too many buttons and settings for what it does. I expect efficient simplicity from an iPhone app; this reminded me too much of flashy filler-based android material. I struggled for several minutes as I waited for the app to properly sync up with my time zone. I then was very resentful of the default background area and controls for viewing a patch of sky. I feel that it should be going through my camera and providing an augmented reality environment and just having me move my phone around, perhaps with the way it is setup currently would make a nice optional setup. I ultimately decided to refund it for the price and the unnecessary complexity of the interface.

Great app. Great easy to use software- similar but more advanced that the free celestron sky portal. Well worth the upgrade price as there are a lot more objects in this version plus lots of other nice features like telescope fov circles. I also love how the program can be used to easily record objects which you observe. I have the android version as well. I think this is by far the best planetarium software available- it is so easy to use and has so much information right at your finger tips. I highly recommend this program!

AAAA. Awesome amateur astronomers app! They've thought of everything!

Unable to align. Aligning by handset - perfect. Aligning by this app - impossible. Huge fail. This app is a complete waste of money if it doesn’t control the scope. What a piece of crap!

Amazing App. This continues to be one of the most useful tools I have for amateur astronomy!

Crashes in AR mode. This version crashes when AR is selected! Fix this and you get the extra star I’d also like to see an easier way to add an object to the observing list.

Might be ok...... Equipment is entered under “Observe”, not “Settings”. Have not found a way to import SS5 Settings/Equipment yet.

Why did Neowise data disappear?. Apparently comet data "expires" and you need to uninstall and reinstall app (plus version) to refresh the data. And then all your personal settings disappear. Very annoying and badly designed IMHO.

Fails to connect. Sounded like a good idea, ETX125 with Stella WiFi adapter. I can see WiFi settings page so I know my network connection is good. Tried with both the Autostar and a brand new Audiostar handbox. Alignment successful but no matter what I cannot get the app to connect to the scope. This occurs on both my iPhone 11 and iPad Pro, both with latest iOS. Unable to find any solutions in the forum. $14.99 wasted.

Lunar eclipse. I bought the $ 8.00 app to aid watching the lunar eclipse — what a waste

Unstable near zenith. SkySafari 6 Plus does not work as well as SkySafari 5 Plus that I bought last year. When I orientate my iPhone towards zenith, the sky view rotates rapidly and is very unstable. SkySafari 5 Plus does not have this problem. I would like a refund for SkySafari 6 Plus. Thanks!

No Tesla Roadster. Can find the Tesla Roadster in space with Search feature.

Skysafari6 plus. Best app for any money, glad I purchased it!

So so app. No real information on usage. No usable manual. It's pretty much learn by hit an miss until one day learn it.

Measuring Distance option not available in SkySafari Plus?. I had the SkySafari app on my iPad and iPhone and I was interested in distances between objects. According to the Help section in SkySafari under Sky Chart Help you can only measure distances using SkySafari Plus or SkySafari Pro. So I upgraded to SkySafari Plus for that very feature. Guess what? You can’t do it. Updated: 12/2/2020 After using SkySafari Plus I discovered how to do it. It is different than the method suggested in the SkySafari app. In SkySafari Plus you click on the “Selection” option at the bottom, then select from “Measure from”. So my review goes from 3 stars to 5 stars. Great app.

CD43. Great app! Educational and informative. Very accurate. Highly recommend it. It is truly beautiful!!!!

Why?. I wasted my money on this since it’s seems to be impossible to import my settings from version 5. Deleted!

Does not use Bluetooth arrangements.. Very disappointed that “whoever” doesn’t allow use of BT for telescope mount control. Almost brought the Pro version. Thank God I checked on the specs.

Unhappy. App does not work as I had thought and read about. Maybe I just need to play with it some more?

Issues. Problem with setting for horizon and grid.

Avoid this Update !. The past two updates just broke a perfectly fine app. What a disaster: bear the horizon a dark field appears, but size and area changes as you approach from Zenith or Nadir, shifting East and West within that area is creating further distortion of the skies. Please fix this issue asap !! PS. It also effects Sky Safari v5 but not Sky Safari v4 - Authors: please don’t touch it !!!! Update: Comet 289P/Blanpain at -1.7 magnitude ? JPL is estimating only 18.48 ... Hmm, that could explain why I cannot find this brilliant object within SkySafari in the real sky. Update 2: Developers suggest to reset to factory settings. Ok, this worked for the horizon issue - but doesn’t really address the origins of errors. Comet still at -1.8 magnitude ...

Refund. When I shine it on my shoes it shows it’s a star constellation. Not accurate

The Best App for observations and AP :). I love the app, it’s my go-to reference :) I use it as an aid both for visual and astrophotography.

Great for observation. I use it strapped to my scope

Perfect App. Best app on the market. The information is nearly limitless and can be utilized by novice casual observer to astrophysicist.

Brilliant. If your into the night sky or Astronomyy at all this app is a must have.

Please wait! SkySafari 6 Plus app comments loading...
