Nintendo Switch Parental Cont… App Description & Overview

What is nintendo switch parental cont… app? Nintendo Switch Parental Controls™ is a free app for smart devices to keep you engaged with your family's gaming activities on Nintendo Switch.
◆ A Nintendo Switch console with the latest available system version is required to use this app.

This is recommended for people worried about things such as:
1. Is my child spending too much time playing games?
2. What kind of games is my child playing?
3. Are the games my child is playing age-appropriate?

Below are three special features of the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app:
1. Monitor play time on your console.
Set a play-time limit and the console will notify users that the time limit has been reached.
Parents and guardians can check the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to see if the time limit has been followed.
It is also possible to suspend gameplay automatically when the play-time limit is reached.

2. Check up on your console's gameplay.
The summary function allows you to easily see what games have been played on the console recently and how much time was spent playing each day.
View daily reports and monthly summaries of play activity. If you choose to receive push notifications, you'll be notified when a new monthly summary is available.
It's an easy way to see what kind of games your family is interested in.

3. Restrict console features.
Nintendo Switch functions can be restricted to prevent the console from playing games above a certain age rating.

Attention:
◆ An Internet connection is required to use this app. Cellular data may be used. A Nintendo Account (for ages 18 and up) is also required.
◆ Restrictions to Nintendo eShop purchases can be set from Nintendo Account settings.
◆ Your use of this app is subject to the Nintendo Account User Agreement available at support.nintendo.com.
◆ In order to make use of all of the features and settings available in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, all registered Nintendo Switch consoles need to be using the latest system version.

More Specific Times Please!. I like everything about the idea behind the app and everything. My only thing is the same as other reviews… Which is that I wish you could set more specific time frames in which the Switch is locked. Like mornings between after 6am. If there could just be like a slider bar where we just set the times where the switch is playable or not, that would be AMAZING. I would definitely review at 5 stars if it had something like that. Overall the features it does have are already worth it, time limits in general to help kids stay accountable and help parents track times is awesome. I especially like the organization of the data in daily and monthly views so you can see trends for goal setting and having an honest look at what is actually going on.

Kill switch please. I was pleased to hear Nintendo had an app that would help me monitor and restrict my kids playtime. However it doesn’t really work. Half the time it doesn’t log time they are using. Today for example, my son was playing for over an hour when I had it set to shut off after 15 minutes. When I checked the app it said “no time logged” but I was watching him play. It logged 5 minutes of the day before and 50 minutes of the day before that so it does work....sometimes. If kids are disabling the WiFi connection to get around parental limits (not sure if that is their game but it seems a good explanation) I would like a parental control option to tell the switch to stop working till WiFi is reconnected. Related to that request, why isn’t there a parental control setting to disable the Switch unless the parent/guardian allows it through the app? I can only restrict time (down to 15 minutes) but I don’t want them to play at all till they’ve been useful (clean rooms etc.) As Nintendo aims for a younger group of players, be aware that those of us who buy these consoles want them to be rewards but when kids play despite restrictions, it defeats the purpose and annoys your real customers, the parents who hold the purses.

Not as useful as one might think. Needs work.. As a professional software engineer and CS grad I'm appalled at the laxity around effectively empowering parents to manage and oversee their children's access to media generally and video games specifically. I love gaming, and can't wait to sharing this fun activity with my kids. I believe publishers and devs should have the right to express and create freely, even if I find some of the titles/content personally repugnant. However they should also be held totally responsible to support and promote the full empowerment of parental oversight. The bare-minimum is not acceptable (vis-a-vis "general", or ineffective "console-level" controls.) The technological hoops that parents need to jump through to actually do this is herculean for all but the most determined and technical of parents. Many, if not the overwhelming majority, just give up under this shifted burden. The lack of corporate accountability and flimsy allocation of resources to create efficient and prescriptive tools for parents to keep their kids safe should be criminal. It's not up to them to keep our kids safe. But it should be totally on them to give parents every means to do so. Anything less is sheer negligence.

Good But Lacking One Major Ability. Nintendo, this app is a great idea, but why can the settings not be set individually for each specific user? I can't give one child more playtime than another, restrict content more for younger children than for older children, etc. Your parental controls are great, but they need to have the option of being applied per user instead of being applied globally to everyone who plays on the same console. It is unreasonable to buy an individual switch console for each child and monitor them that way. Until this ability is added I strongly contend that this app is severely lacking. No business from our family will come until we can insure that this ability exists. We would like to purchase a switch when this issue has been addressed, but not until then. Nintendo, can we expect this ability to come in a future update?

Lack of common sense parental controls is frustrating!. We are huge fans of the brand, particularly for our kids. But the lack of common sense parental controls and security on the Switch is very frustrating. Why in the world hasn’t Nintendo implemented parental controls that make sense for families? As sophisticated as apps and security are now, there should be a lock passcode option on the device as well as through this app. That way if my kid grabs the Switch, he has to enter a passcode to even open the home screen or use any software. We also need to be able to set start and end times for usage blackouts. Just setting a bedtime doesn’t allow a parent to also exclude early morning hour usage (say, when kids should be getting ready for their day and/or school). I would like to be able to say “my kid has a window of time between 4pm and 6pm and in that he has a 1-hour limit before software suspends. This cannot be that hard to implement and should’ve been done YEARS ago. Nintendo, please do better for the families supporting your brand AND encouraging healthy screen time usage and limits for their developing brains!

Features Lacking. We share a Switch between my wife, my son and myself. I need to limit screen time for my son, but not the others. When I first turned on parental controls, my son threw a fit (he is young). Threatened to delete my account. Would have been nice to password protect individual accounts from him should he do something he will regret. Also, it would be nice to restrict the creation of new accounts, or force them to be created at the app not console. I would like to set limits on certain accounts. I have a mother and a wife, I dont need limits on mine, but I do on my son’s and I dont want my play time to impact his time limits. If my son earns additional play time, I want to be able to add additional time for that day. Right now I have to make changes globally and change back the next day. The app throws errors more often than I would like to see in any app, but it seems to function. Given my needs and this long list of features missing, Im disappointed. Time will tell if the trouble of messing with this app and parental controls is worth it. Please update this app and fill some gaps. We cant be the first users to need these features.

One thing missing. This is a great app that helps me control when my kids can play on their Switches. For the most part it works pretty well as expected. The one major feature that I see missing is the ability to set a "start time." For example, you can set a time which is considered "bedtime" and the Switch will suspend itself and the child will not be able to play anymore past that time. Which is great for preventing them from sneaking out of bed and grabbing their Switch and playing it. BUT, for some strange reason you can’t set up a start time, so if the kid wakes up at 6 AM and you don't want them to play until 8 AM too bad. They can wake up at 6 AM and play on their switch for two hours before you even wake up and there's no way to stop it. Please Nintendo add this feature and I will rate it five stars.

Everything’s great, except.... I absolutely love this app. It lets you see what games were played, on which profiles, and set limits on both age restrictions for the rating of games you’ll allow your family to play, AND it lets you set the amount of time you’ll allow them to play in a day. You can set bedtimes each day so no games can be played after the set bedtime as well. The only thing I don’t like is that you can’t control which profiles the limitations are applied to. It’s applied to every single profile on the console or none at all. What if I want to play after my kids go to bed? What if my kids sucked up all the play time for the day and now I want a turn? Technically, I could just enter my pin and temporarily give myself access, but I don’t want to have that barrier for my own profile. I understand why they did it that way, but I’d rather have the option of choosing who the limits apply to rather than it forcing me to apply it to everyone. Minus one star for that, but everything else is amazing.

Missing options. There are multiple reasons this app needs to be fixed ASAP. If I set alarms, my son can only play within that wi Dow. But if for some reason I’d like to change his start and end times the day of, the switch will not update those settings. I’ve noticed that the settings will be set after midnight each night. But, I am unable to change any settings within the same day. Nintendo should most definitely allow the parent to set: 🔸Start and end times and within the day 🔸Volume control 🔸Notifications when child starts and stops playing 🔸Disabling switch if the passcode to turn off parental controls is attempted 🔸to have a start time at ANY time within the day that works for my family. Not what works for Nintendo app creators. 🔸 ability to pause play or shut down all play in that moment if necessary 🔸the ability to choose ANY amount of time that I allow him to play. Because these settings are not available or the switch will not update once I’ve saved all of my edited settings, I have to disable all alarms in order for my son to be able to play. So now there is NO end time or time limit of play. This is sooo frustrating. I try to limit my son to 2 hours of play at the very most. Most days it’s one hour. He earns time depending on his jobs completed at home. The options are very limiting to the parent.

Microsoft Family does a better job. We have both Nintendo and Microsoft consoles in the house and will use Microsoft screen time settings for the basis. Microsoft allows customization down to the child account level on almost every detail from online access to apps to screen time allotted and allows me to individualize for each of my kids. Now this app by Nintendo you only have a global screentime and not able to set individually for each kid. Would be great if I had a console for each kid but that is not happening just yet. Also there are games I would like to play and if they burn all the screentime I have take the time to disable just for my play session. Content settings for games should be available at an account level as well as online presence and communications. With my kids i don’t restrict online play but do restrict communication on the Xbox unless they have friends added that I have approved and added. As for content I like the ability to restrict the level of game content based off the ESRB and that is not available here. Come on Nintendo you have the top selling console. Put some of that money to fleshing out the features or walk across the street and talk to Microsoft since your American corporate office is right next to them.

Not what it should be. Two issues. 1. The purpose of setting parental controls is so that you can tailor them to the individual person. This app only allows for the control of the device. This is our family device and I won’t be buying multiple so I can control my kids’ access individually. I don’t want to put controls on four people when I just want to restrict the usage individually for each family member dependent on earning time to play on it (school grades, helping out at home, general free playtime). Issue 2. The use of the PIN. If my kid goes on my phone and into the app, the PIN is displayed, so not only can they change the parental settings that I have set, but also go on the Switch, enter the PIN I’ve chosen and then they can use the switch for as long as they want and gives them an override for everything that I’ve set up. Nintendo, it seems like you could come up with something far better. Everyone complains that kids are addicted to video games and don’t do anything else, just like the cigarette manufacturers you should have some kind of obligation to lessen and assist with the regulation of this addiction

Missing some fairly obvious features; UI is bad. 1) Features: for example I should be able to disable a switch with immediate effect for the day, rather than having a minimum of 15 minutes playtime. 2) UI: they use standard iOS controls but in general the layout is terrible. The process for selecting one of three switches in the house involves taking turns tapping UI elements at the top and bottom of the screen repeatedly. Things are not located in streamlined positions. Also the icon for changing switches is a counterintuitive ‘+’ which looks more like you’re adding something than selecting. Needs better design and focus on UX. I’d expect better from a company like Nintendo. 3) Disabling alarms for the day works, but then when you warm launch the app the next day, it still shows alarms as disabled instead of properly updating the UI to reflect the switch’s settings on the current day. You have to completely kill and relaunch (“cold launch”) the app for it to update. This bug has existed for years now, so it’s surprising it hasn’t been fixed.

Needs separate account controls desperately!. Nintendo, this app is practically worthless since it only allows time controls for the entire system itself, rather than individual child accounts. This MUST be fixed! How am I supposed to allow one child a certain amount of time and another child, whom is much older, separate time limits?!? Also a password protected account on the console (for myself, being the parent) should be an option, 100%! This is all kind of a no-brainer, and I would’ve expected more out of a company that is well known for being “family friendly”!! Anyway, it seems you guys are just getting into the whole app thing & have some major updates to roll out... so with that being said, we will have to continue using other gaming devices until there is an appropriate update! Highly disappointed!

Thankful for this app. I am very thankful for this app! This app has allowed a healthy balance for my kids. Once their time is up I can either add more or say “not right now” and they are perfectly fine with either answer. Now I think key was starting out right away with this app. Lately I haven’t had to adjust anything because we’ve been so busy but we really appreciate the safety features. I only wish fortnite was under the preteen restriction options. I also love this app is absolutely 100% free! I wish whoever made it would make one for iPhone parental controls!! That would be amazing!

Wish you could restrict mornings. Overall, I think the Switch parental controls are pretty good. They’re easy to use, and the interface is pretty intuitive. However, there’s no way to set a “start” time. If you set a bedtime, it automatically defaults to 6am for the start time the next day, and this can’t be changed. This is annoying if you want to keep your kids from playing before school (or DURING school, now that we’re all stuck at home due to COVID). I’ve seen this request frequently on different fora, but for some reason Nintendo hasn’t seen fit to add this feature. Until it happens, I’ve taken to hiding the switch from my two preteen boys during the day, until all their schoolwork is done, but having to work from home full-time, while overseeing my kids’ Zoom schooling, is already very stressful, and I hate having another thing to add to my cognitive load.

Has potential but lacking. Hi I am a mom of six kiddos, each child has their own switch. The parent control app only lets you connect 3 switches, my personal switch connected to the app before I bought the kids so they were playing off mine. Now I can’t get mine off to get a kid added to and I have no way to get all my kids on there. Also what is the point of time limit restrictions if it doesn’t lock the kid out? My one kiddo sees the time limit deal, ignores it and keeps playing. I need to be able to lock them out, I also need to babe able to add all my children on this thing. So good app if you only have 3 machines, because it does tell me what they are playing, how long, and restricts purchases (yay!) but it’s seriously lacking in locking them out when they pass their time limit, and being able to add more game systems.

Like the control BUT..... I love this app because i can control how much my kid plays and what I can restrict. What I don’t like is the bug I noticed right away. I was testing it out and when I switched from a bedtime to NONE, it still was counting down 5 min on the switch, which made no sense. Also I keep getting error messages on my app which I think is weird. Anyways please fix these issues, check the app for bugs nintendo! UPDATE: One thing I recently don’t like is that if I disable the parental controls on the switch itself, I can’t enable them from the app. For example I disable the controls only so my son can play “fortnight”. But that also disabled the bed time and the game shutting off. I HATE this! I need it to be where I can disable for that game only but not the time limit. Nintendo please fix this!

Good but not great. I can’t for the life of me figure out why only 3 consoles can be added, I have 7 children 5 of whom have a switch/lite, and it takes my phone and my husbands phone to put limits on all of them. So in the event that the two children, whose switch is on my husbands phone, earn more time or need to lose their game privilege that day, I have to call or text him at work and ask him to adjust the kids times… it seems like an unnecessary and arbitrary restriction, we don’t all fit in the neat 2 parents 2 kids construct. In fact, it may be better to add a limit to profiles rather than consoles (though I can see that being easier for kids to break the rules)

Love the app... wish it does more.... I like the you tube app on my Switch, but my son loves to binge on it, and I rather him doing something else on my Switch. Also, since the you tube app doesn’t switch google account when Nintendo accounts switch , my son ends up using my google account and screwing up my history—I have to manually out of you tube before closing the app to avoid this, which is inconvenient. Any who, I wish there was a way to block certain software from opening for supervised accounts, or a way to put a time limit or specific software. Otherwise, love the app.

Disappointing but sometimes useful. Previous review disappeared. Many suggestions were in it, some of which I can confirm some others are also saying. This said. The feature I appreciate is notifications when something is done. I turn down the allowed time to the minimum, since there is no option to lock it outright, during days kiddo isn’t allowed because he hasn’t done his one chore or is in the negative on the behavior chart etc- basically things that mean ‘no video games today’. Anyway, while I don’t appreciate the inability to lock it entirely for zero time, I do appreciate that it dings both his dad and I, who are both logged into the account and both have the app(though it does still have to be the same one), when he tries to download something or anything like that.

Works but is too limited. The app itself does work for the limited capabilities it has on it. The app can tell you which account has played for how long as well as the games they played. Having this information; it shouldn’t be difficult in implement more restrictions into the app. It would be nice to be able to set up a schedule with multiple start stop times (kids can play before school, stop when time for class, play on lunch but not last part of school then allow after school til bedtime) but this app is VERY limited and the only options is to either set a certain amount of time (which can start any day as soon as 6am) or you can restrict it to you then have to be available to turn it on with a PIN number every time which can be frustrating when you already have set times you want it allowed. Then there is the final cutoff for the day of bedtime. Like I said; the app does work and is appreciated vs the nothing that is on the system itself but there is so much untapped potential in the app that I think Nintendo (or whomever developed this) just gave up on.

Time Limit. It is quite annoying that you can’t assign time limits to individual profiles. We (the parents) have to deal with the time limits we set for our two children just as they would, it’s quite annoying to have to turn it off then remember to turn it on when we are done using it. They should have designed this app where time limits can be set individually. I feel bad for parents who have kids with a large age gap where you may want to allow an older child 3hrs while a younger child only 1hr. Good luck! We have ours set 1hr during the school week (Mon-Thurs) and 2hrs Friday-Sunday. Other than that obviously ball drop by the developers this is a great idea. The 2 ⭐️ rating is solely on the time limit but it’s such a massive miss it deserves to drop the average stars for this app. I’m curious to know what others think about this design? 🤔

Give parents full control and remember settings. The fact that I can’t set the date and time manually because I have a parental account is moronic. Forcing parents to use internet time because the switch is synced to this app makes no sense. Give full control to the adults without requiring them to delete the connection to the parental app first. Requiring this app to be used for full parental control is draconian and needs to be changed so that we can control everything on the switch itself without this pointless app that deleted all prior settings when I broke the connection to the switch. What is the point of this app if not to have a backup of preferred settings you could apply to your children’s switches? Bottom line it’s our device allow those with the parental password full control.

Almost useless without more robust feature set. Problem #1: No user level customizations : everything is global. Time controls, content allowed, everything is set across all users on the system indiscriminately. I want to set passwords for each user account, and set up each user to be able to access ONLY the games I want them to access. They should not even see game icons of games they are not allowed to access Problem #2: Play time is global across all users. In a house with 3 players of different ages and only one console there MUST be ways to set time limits on an individual player level. I know I can just enter my password to keep playing once time runs out BUT I shouldn’t have to do this if I’m playing under my account (the parent’s account) Problem #3 game visibility on home screen. Maybe there are games that I want to play that I don’t want my 5 year old to see even the icon of. Why can’t I hide my game activity from my kids? NINTENDO PLEASE FIX THIS! I’m not the only one asking for these features! This system you have set up only works if EACH player in a household has their own switch console! That is unrealistic for many families! Having one device to share is the reality in my house and many many other homes. QUIT being greedy Nintendo and give us the level of control we need to make our ONE console work for us as a family.

Great for controlling game time. So my kids love their switch! This little app allows my wife and I to set up an end time each day so the kids don’t stay up all night playing the console. Works like it’s supposed to when their timer is up the console essentially locks itself. Only way to unlock is to enter the passcode which is generated by the app or you can set one yourself. My wife and I use the one generated by the app so the kids will never guess it! Only flaw I can find is the app doesn’t allow for a start time for the console to be turned on such as 8 am etc... besides that every parent with a child who owns a switch should have this app!!

Needs just a bit more control on timing. I love having the ability to control my kids’ playtime on their Switch from my phone. My kids have to earn their playtime by doing chores/schoolwork and the only thing lacking on this app is that I cannot create a “start” time that says they can’t play before noon for example. I also cannot limit them to 0 minutes of playtime to prevent them from playing before they have completed their required jobs. The best I can do is reset the time limit to 15min each night so they don’t end up playing for hours. But even 15min is more than they have earned at 7am when I don’t want them playing at all.

Not user friendly. Not user friendly & difficult to connect child’s account with parent’s account. I can supervise and see the Switch activity but my kid’s account still won’t show up in the family group. And then the parent account can’t change anything on the child’s account without going through the child’s email and account. I can’t change my kid’s password (the account won’t accept the password we set months ago) without going through his email and without him being in the family group, so I’m stuck in a loop. Parent should be able to make all changes on the child’s account through the parent’s email/ contacts. Also, everything should be done through the app in the parent’s account, and you should not have to go from the app to online to do the basic functions. If you’re going to have an app, make it be the one place to do everything please.

Nintendo’s in control. Not being able to change the 6:00am start time after which the switch can be played during the day (like it does for the other end of the day when using the bedtime feature) has led to morning battles like no other in my household. Video games are pretty much the worst thing for my son to get into at the start his day. “Honey, time to turn off the game and eat breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, and go to school!”—That doesn’t work on my kid (wouldn’t have worked on me either—lots of kids struggle with transitions). Having to hide it from him every night is a hassle and I don’t always remember to do it. I would give it five stars if I could restrict game time to after school only. I really fault Nintendo Nintendo for failing to include this obvious feature, especially by now when lots of people have asked for it. When I try to imagine why they would not, by now, have added this, it brings to mind Silicon Valley parents who don’t permit their own children to use the products they create, but are comfortable marketing to other people’s children.

User profiles, Nintendo!. Restrictions are applied to the console instead of the user profiles. What does this mean? You can't vary restrictions based on the ages of more than one child. Once you give the child access to the console, there's nothing keeping them from playing as a different user profile. I don't want my kids to be able to access my game saves or play mature content, but this just makes parental controls painful to use. What I want is basically what Xbox does. You sign in at the start of a gaming session, and content is restricted to that specific user profile. For my kids to access my profile, they need a password. For their own profile, they only have access to appropriate content and they can request my permission for things they can't access. The Wii U even had separate profile access. I don't understand how Nintendo could hose this up so badly.

Barely useful. While this app does allow me to set a time limit for each day and set a bedtime, it is sorely lacking a ton of basic features. Why can’t i have full control over hours that my daughter can play the switch? There is no way to restrict morning hours, so if i don't take it away at night, then she can wake up at 6am and play it instead of getting ready for school. What is the point in setting a bedtime on the device if i have to take it away anyway? Additionally, the daily and monthly data usage don’t show when certain games were played just how long total for the day. Also it should not count being on the home screen towards the time limit. Another issue—I can’t just “add x time” (like 30min or 1hr) as a one time thing. I can only disable parental controls. This is annoying for so many reasons. Mainly, it overrides the bedtime setting , and then if the screen shuts off, i have to disable it again with password. I regret spending so much on the Switch. I had way more control over my old hand-me-down iPad i gave her (then sold, thinking the switch would be better—big mistake)… its crazy that these simple QoL features aren’t just included out of the box.

Definitely Could Be Better. This is a good idea, and it works...but only somewhat. The app is missing a lot of necessary features. For example, 1. There is no start time feature, and the bedtime feature only allows certain (inconvenient) times. (Seriously?, 4:00?!) 2. The app doesn’t let you set different controls for each user. I have 3 kids using the switch, and that basically makes the app totally useless for me. 3. You cannot turn the switch on or off immediately from your phone. If one of my kids wants to use the switch, and the time limit is up and I’m not home, (which happens often, because maybe someone else burned up the time) there is nothing I can do. 4. You can’t set a specific time frame, and I don’t want my kids using the switch before eating dinner. 5. I’ve heard that it is easy to trick the system, (and I’ve actually tried it myself, and it’s true) but luckily my kids aren’t malicious enough to do that.😏 The only reason I use the app is because it lets me see what my kids are doing on the console. I would be very happy if Nintendo came out with a good update, but for now, I’m not gonna bet on that happening anytime soon.

questions and bit concerns... So for the past 2-3 years I’ve had my switch and 2020 during February, the Nintendo suddenly just went offline and will not connect to the internet. We’ve powered it off completely, went into the settings and even brought it to a place for help, but sadly didn’t work. The parent controls went missing when I got my new phone, and now the Nintendo is not letting me put controls on without the internet and I’m extremely concerned and puzzled on what to do. I’ve tried everything and this is my last hope.. overall a great app and I recommend using this.

EDIT: Unacceptable. EDIT: after reading other reviews I’m changing my rating to one star. The issues are obvious, there is no excuse for Nintendo to have not addressed these issues. The lack of password protected accounts with individual time settings renders this app completely useless, and my other complaint (the timer still counting while game is paused on the home screen) is a distant, yet valid, concern. I was super excited for the features of this app but the actual user experience is a little lackluster. I wish there were a way to add a time limit per user, since I have more than one child using the device, and their timer still counts down while a game is paused or even on the home menu. If I need them to do a quick task I’m either making them lose some screen time or waiting for a chore to get done before they can conveniently close their game. I do love the intention and it does work well otherwise, just a few minor tweaks would make this a 5 Star app.

Okay for self regulation - families, sorry. Anyone who has more than one player to a Switch this isn’t going to help, as you can’t limit time by user, just by Switch. Dumb. Just... lock the account after the set time Nintendo. Why is that so hard on the backend? If you’re doing this for one child, or yourself because you completely lack self control *waves* it works a-okay. Mine biggest complaint is that “bedtime” is between 4 and midnight. So if I’m up past midnight... suddenly I can access tomorrow’s playtime. Self regulators: You can set your time limits and then delete the app. I do this to make it harder for myself to extend the time “just another 15 minutes.” And it works wonderfully. Otherwise it’s pretty easy to bypass. (I’m not knocking the score for how easy it is to self bypass. That’s not it’s purpose.)

Good start but easy to get around controls. Was great until my 9 year old son figured out how to disable it pretty easy thanks to his friends. He just deleted the app and reinstalled it to kill the password/face access. Another way is that he went into my settings and just turned off the login via face feature... then bam, no password or face needed to access the controls. Then I wonder why he’s on the thing beyond the limits that were setup. Then he grabbed the pin for the switch itself via the app since you can see it without a password and he changed the pin and at some other point he then deactivated parental controls. No controls is a non-starter. Well, now he doesn’t have a switch to play with for the time being....

Limited parental controls. I’m glad that there are parental controls for the switch however I wish there were more options available, such as Microsoft Family safety app gives for computer use. It gives you option to set up time windows and duration for each day, and allows for time to be requested directly from a device after time has expired. Currently, since I don’t allow my kids play when they want I have all of the time limits set to 0 and have to manually go in and change the set time for that day and then remember to go back in and change it back to 0 after they are done. More detail when a password is tried unsuccessfully would be a nice feature too. Push Notifications tell me what time the attempts were tried but that detail is missing when you open the app.

Mostly useless. The app and Switch don’t properly sync. Unlocking the parental controls on the Switch by entering the PIN essentially blocks this app from being able to turn them back on. If you open the app while the Switch is unlocked the control slider is still set as the controls being active. Flipping the slider to the parental controls off sends a message to the device that there’s more time but then switching it back to enabled doesn’t actually reenable the parental controls. If you disable the parental controls you would think at least the bedtime control would stay enabled. Nope. So if you’ve unlocked the Switch using the PIN none of the limits reenable unless you press the power button on the device. The syncing issue is not caused by internet trouble either. You can be playing a game online and it still won’t relock remotely.

Please add more time controls. Please add more time controls!! I can set some with our circle for online game access. Would be nice to not only have a start time but also a down time or pause time. That way I could allow day 30mins before school, then not during school, and then again allow time after school. Going to be essential with all the distance learning happening right now. My other option is to compensate it each night (all electronics are keep in our room at night. Yes, phones and all) and lock it up till after school. To much work for a parent when you could fix the issue. Lastly, the child should not be able to put the switch in air plane mode.

C for effort, expulsion for execution.. I don’t see why Nintendo even wasted their time with this app. It is essentially useless. Parental controls need to be able to be assigned to individual profiles instead of just the console as a whole. Also, the ability to put passwords on profiles and prevent the creation of new profiles is a must. If you have an older kid you have to allow your younger kids to play higher rated games or tell your older kid they can’t play the games they’re mature enough to play. What’s up with that? Parental controls as they are at this time are laughable and useless. It would be nice to see a resolution, but I don’t expect one as people have been saying the same thing since release and gotten no response. Crap like this is why Nintendo is dying to bigger better consoles. Just sell your titles already so real consoles can do them justice.

Great idea, horribly implemented. I was super excited to learn that the Switch had parental controls. Unfortunately the options are severely lacking, rendering useless the parental control feature. As others have mentioned, the inability to set parental controls (time limits, content ratings) for individual users is a complete non-starter. My next thought was to set a combined time limit for the whole family, and then use the app to monitor whether family members were self-managing and splitting the time equitably. This too is not possible, as the app’s accounting of time per user is wildly inaccurate. Lastly, it would be nice if two instances of the app could be linked to the same Switch console (e.g. both mine and my wife’s iPhones) for co-parent monitoring. Assuming Nintendo fixes all of the above, this app could actually fulfill its assumed promise. From there it would be amazing to also be able to set parental controls for my kids’ Nintendo 3DS consoles using this same app. Even cooler would be if screen time limits per kid were enforced cross-device, which would allow parents to mange total daily screen time regardless of which Nintendo device their kids are using. After all, what’s the purpose of making parents establish Nintendo accounts and IDs for each kid if not to ultimately provide features like this? Or is it just so Nintendo can track, profile, and sell stuff to my kids? Disappointing.

“Parental Controls” is a joke. So many problems with this app. It was clearly designed by a gamer and not a parent. What this app needs: - Clear start and end times that account for all 24 hours of the day. I should be able to say my kids can play from 4pm - 6pm on Mondays. And 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays. - The shut off time controls start at 4pm. This means my kids know that they can sneak downstairs and play after midnight if I haven’t forgotten to set the allowed play time to 0. - There should be a clear and easy way to shut off the games when playing. You can’t. The only way is to physically turn it off. - if you enter the PIN to bypass the controls on the physical switch, there is no way to set time limits after that. My kids will bring me the Switch and ask me to unlock it with the PIN. If I give them 30 mins of play time on the app, it will shut off, but if you enter the PIN on the switch, they have unlimited time. You can’t then set a time limit on the app. - The whole UI is kludgy. It feels like whoever was given the job to create the app didn’t think it through, isn’t a parent, and had zero interest in actually making something useful. - controls are easily bypassed by kids. It’s a joke. Sometimes I just take the switch away for months at a time because I’m sick of dealing with it. My kids are too young to self regulate. So sick of fighting over time limits.

5* for overall ideal…but def lacking some features…. Nintendo… excellent job on the switch…as a 29yo father… I have seen how far your tech has progressed and if I’m being honest, quite excited to see AC Valhalla on your platform now(for myself obviously, not my 6yo)… Anyway, I give the parental control app 3* because I really feel like it could use a little more attention.. for instance, it would be nice to have the option to set time limitations on games individually as well as times throughout the day that the switch is unavailable, so more screen time options and maybe it’s just me, but the adult/parent profile and child profile and connecting them to Nintendo is a little bit confusing and would be much easier if you registered your adult account and then registered your child’s account under you..and again maybe it is just me.. but if it is then your UI could be simplified… More in depth time restrictions would be helpful though..

AWESOME, really helped. I think this is a good app because since Covid-19 came and took over, my daughter has been addicted to it because she can’t hang out with her friend and the kids in the neighborhood she has been using it more often, When we first got this app every time the time limit told her it her time was done she complained. Now when it tells her that her time is done she just puts it on the charger and does something else, I also once saw her play a game with her siblings! This has been a good help to me and my family, thank you Nintendo!

Below Average. I like Nintendo but it’s times like these where Nintendo is really just far behind in what they aim to deliver. As a parental app, this is sub-par with little control over your switch. All it does is monitor how much little Bradley has played on his switch on X day, and in increments of 5 minutes. It’s fine you would think, until the monthly log gets recorded and you realize it doesn’t even tally up the total hours played on each software with legible measurements! It’s frustrating. The Wii U and 3DS had far better parental control with an actual daily log to measure time played. How is that concept from nearly a decade ago superior to this watered-down load of trash? I would really like to know Nintendo, whoever it is that runs this department needs to completely revamp this app.

Not Enough. Like many other reviews, I find I want more from the parental controls. I concur that not being able to set restrictions by player is frustrating. I also do not like the ease in which it seems my kids can get around the controls and continue playing. Mine have numerous times bypassed and turned off the controls. I hate that the controls automatically go away when the app is deleted which my son has figured out is more effective than figuring out my pins. I know this is an issue with my kid and me but I also feel the controls shouldn’t go away because an app is deleted from my phone. We still have a login and I haven’t undone the controls. I also really hate how you can disable the alarms for the day but that you can’t reinstate them at all. And that you can set a bedtime limit but you can’t set a start time limit. While I understand that much of this control needs to be me stepping up as a parent and setting boundaries, the point of parental control features is to help automate those boundaries and help enforce them routinely. Please correct some glaring missing components.

Parents need more and better partnership. During COVID, playing with friends has become both an important outlet and a concerning pattern and need for my 12 year old boy. Among other things when it comes to helping him be balanced with gaming and school and physical activity and etc, I would like more control over setting a time window with start AND end times that stick. And somehow my kid seems to play through the limits consistently when on Fortnite. Honestly it makes me want to get rid of the Switch to get rid of that stress and conflict in my life because the way controls are designed now he feels like I am an enemy, doing something to him. It would be way better if there were a way for him to participate in a healthy way. I do appreciate that the controls exist at all but feel like it’s an MVP. I find myself wondering …how might the super smart Nintendo designers enhance what exists and create a kid-facing approach to help them be a part of learning to self-manage and monitor? Pediatricians and child development experts are clear that 2 hrs of screen time is a MAX for healthy well-rounded children, across all platforms. Let’s all work together to make that more viable? Thanks for asking.

Great tool that needs some obvious improvements. This is a pretty awesome way to track usage of your Switch remotely to make sure the kids are being honest about how much playtime they are getting in. It allows you to set either a subtle reminder that time is up (good luck with that) or have a hard stop that suspends the software. It even breaks the total playtime down by each user who was on for how long. Considering it already shows how much time each user plays, it is beyond me why you can’t set individual timers, and instead are only able to set one aggregate time for everyone. This would easily be a 5 star app if such an ability was patched in, but until then I can’t say is useful for much more than seeing how one kid played the whole time while another barely played at all, after the fact.

Missing some -crucial- features. I’m glad a parental control app exists, but I really wish a few features were included that were usually standard in these kinds of apps. (1) Account-specific settings. Right now, I can’t limit my 4 year old’s screen time without also limiting her older brother, my wife, and myself. They have different screen time recommendations, so this is very frustrating. (2) Add-time feature. The only way I can add time is by changing the permanent schedule, or deactivating the limitations and then remembering to reactivate it again. It would be good if I could just add an hour or whatever, without having to remember to change it back later. (3) Onset time. The Switch is intended to be an after-school activity for my kids, but they will get up before school and sneak out just to play it in the early morning, and there’s not anything I can currently do in the parental settings to stop them. I would rate the app 5 stars, if not for these missing features.

Cannot block viewing of Mature eShop titles. I allowed my kids to browse the Nintendo Switch eShop and found that ALL Switch games were being displayed, including numerous M (Mature) games. Those “M” games have provocative graphics in the eShop even if you don’t click on them - eg the depictions of women for Grand Theft Auto (GTA). So I downloaded this app, in hopes that I could allow my kids to browse a version of the eShop in which only games appropriate to their age level are displayed. I set everything up and selected the option to restrict viewing in the eShop. To my dismay, the M games (and their provocative imagery) are still displayed when my kids browse the eShop, on their account! All that the “restriction” does is block a kid from seeing any MORE information about one of those games. For example, if I browse the eShop using my daughter’s account, GTA is still displayed right at the top of the eShop (with the image of the 3 scantily clad women); if I click on it, the eShop displays a screen saying sorry, you can’t go any further, this content is restricted. That’s all that the “restriction” accomplishes. If I enable restrictions, the eShop should not even display the restricted titles. At all. !!!!! Come on Nintendo, I expected so much better from you.

Pretty good. I don’t use this to restrict gameplay, I’m just using this to see my daily screen time, the time it says I play games for is fairly accurate and I found it to be pretty useful for checking how much time I spent playing games on my Nintendo switch. My only issue is that sometimes when I’m playing on my Nintendo switch it doesn’t notify the app, this usually happens when I’m not playing for a long time or if the app is running on my phone as I am using my switch, I would appreciate it if it could give more accurate results and to notify me when I’m playing for a short amount of time and when the app is still running of my phone

Suggested change. Great ap. But please can you create a starting time, allowing parents to control what time the switch can be switched on in the morning. My kids have been waking up early in the morning just to play the console. I want to be able to limit this.

Infinity Glitch. This app was great when it was on one device. However, since it was installed on my wife’s iPhone too, my children have been able to avail themselves of the ‘infinity glitch’ which means that they can play for as long as they want, well beyond any set time limits. Until the glitch is fixed, I recommend only installing on one device to control you children’s use.

Decent controls, some obvious flaws. Good time and bedtime restrictions. Would like to see a restriction on what time kids can start playing (eg - to dissuade early rising on the weekends) and also a case-by-case approval for games (happy for kids to play Zelda, for example, but don’t want blanket approval for all 13 years games). Still best controls on a gaming device that I’ve come across. Thanks for the peace of mind, Nintendo

Great!!!. Great app for the phone only gave it 4* because you can’t turn the switch off from your phone and doesn’t have automatic shut down on the set time you allow

Needs more options. Would be good if you could assign time limits to each child account etc this would make it better and have more control for the children

Way too easy for hacking. This is almost useless. My son has found a way to hack it every time. The fact that the password is visible when the app is open is not great. Also, the time for playing starts at 6am which is crazy when the evening setting is on. This should be a changeable function. Not to mention the other apps which can override this app and render it redundant. What’s the point ?

Disappointed… please update!. Good app needs more adjustability with times. I’m disappointed with the fact you can’t add any more than 3 accounts… doesn’t work with my 5 boys..

Great app but needs more choice. I love the idea of the parental control and the app works great. However there needs to be more control options. The key immediate need is that the lowest play limit needs to be 0 minutes - currently the lowest play limit is 15min. Setting it to 0 minutes would mean that kids can’t get access without approval and can’t get up in the middle of the night to play 15min once the timer resets! Please make this simple change asap! Also having the option of being able to set up a custom group or limit by selecting each app would be good.

Just missing start of play restriction. Simple enough to install and configure. Just needs the ability to specify when the switch can start to be used

Useless. What is the point of this when they can play straight through the set time limit.

Average. The whole switch thing is a rort. Expensive machines especially when you have 2 kids. Games are a rip off and you can only use 1 game at a time. Hard to navigate and set up accounts. Still trying to work out if I can download a game to both devices without having to pay again which I won’t.

Great, but lacking. I think it’s great that I can remotely monitor how long and what’s been played, but... The app needs the ability to select max time per player; each day ends in a screaming match because the oldest user gets to play more than the youngest. I wish I could set times so each get a fair go!

It’s ok but…. Easy to use but not much functionality. The app relies on each person having their own switch so if you have multiple profiles/child accounts on the one switch then the time limit applies to everyone. You cannot assign individual time limits to each person. For example, I have 5 kids, if I set the time limit at 1 hour than divide it by 5. It means I have to set the timer 2.5 hours if I want each child to have half an hour each but then I still need to set a timer on an iPad or phone to make sure that child doesn’t go over their time limit. There is no ability to suspend/set a zero time for the day when a child or all of them have lost screen time.

Needs more individual settings. Generally a good app but I wish I could set time limits for each individual user. Setting a time limit for the whole family means one family member often ends up using all the time and not giving the others a go. I don’t really see the point in having a time limit option if still I have to manually monitor each child’s individual time spent on the device.

Cool app. Great way to control how the switch is used in the family home without being intrusive

Best!. It’s very easy to track down my kids screen time. Great that I can look at the game that he loves and talk with him about his fav game.

More features please!. Every parent should use. But I need to be able to schedule not only total hours of play in a day, but the periods of the day during which the device can be used, so that it can be locked at other times, eg schedule 2 hours of play between 3pm and 6pm on weekdays, 9am and 7pm weekends. Or maximum playtime during allotted periods, eg 9am to 5pm unlimited. Microsoft Family Safety does this very well, allowing multiple timeslots during the day plus an overall daily limit. Hope Nintendo can add this.

Great but missing a few key options. Really happy with very user friendly app based parental control options for the Nintendo switch. Best I’ve seen of comparable devices by a long shot. However there are a few key features missing: - really need a passcode lock for the whole device. My kids can pick it up an turn it on at any time. I’d much prefer to be able to allocate game time to them without having to hide the switch in the cupboard. - need an option for allocating 0 minutes play time on particular days. The minimum is currently 15mins. But some days I’d like to be able to keep the device turned off. - would really like to be able to allocate different levels if restriction to different users. Our kids are 13, 8 and 5. Is like the 13 year old to be able to play games that are too old for the younger kids but I have to log in and change while of device settings each time. But if a loan and surely easy to fix..... Other than that, Thanks Nintendo. All in all pretty good user friendly options for parents.

Screen time immunity. Thanks for the app I quickly discovered that if you get in before your parents it makes it pretty easy to do what ever you want eg remove restrictions and times. Thx

Could be better. Ours seems to still work past the allocated time slot and I’d like to blacklist certain games in the age range. Also why can’t “child” setting allow playing online? Needs tweaking and this could be a great app

Convenient but missing two key features. Setting up schedules for individual days is easy and works as expected. The functionality is solid and reliable. Changes are typically synced from the app to the Switch in under 10 seconds (and the “busy syncing” graphic is delightful). Two key quality of life improvements I’d like to see added are: 1) don’t just have a TURN OFF time (e.g. the Switch will only work until 9pm), but also a TURN ON time. I’ve got kids up at 6am on weekends playing on the Switch because there’s no way to restrict this - I’d like to be able to set it to not turn on until 9am for example. Please make this happen! 2) ability to easily grant “1 more hour” when time runs out. Currently unless you edit the actual schedule for that day there’s only an option to Disable Alarms For Today.

Very very slick. Having been a huge fan of the iOS screentime restrictions I was looking forward to this. But it’s so much better than I expected. Very well done, nicely executed, very easy to use, the only difference I would make is to have it so that I can restrict usage between certain times, so only allow usage between 8am and 9pm, whereas as it currently stands it looks like I can use it once the clock strikes midnight, but I stand to be corrected

Great app but needs time of day restrictions. Would be great to be able to limit start of play to say 4pm after homework is done. Also to avoid sneaking out of bed at 6am to play.

No wake-up start limit. Evening bedtime limit is good but missing a morning start time. Instead of sleeping soundly my child wakes-up to game at the early hours of the morning. I am constantly needing to hide devise so my child gets a full night’s sleep. Nintendo needs to be a lot more like Apple’s screen time which has loads more options.

Best ever parental control ever used. I can see what game has been played and how long. Amazing.

Only good for three switches. I had been happily using this app to sound an alarm when screen time was about to come to an end, but my toddler didn’t understand that some times you aren’t allowed to play on the switch so I used the app with 0 minutes and let my other kids know the passcode (not ideal but the only way I could figure out how to ‘lock’ the switch). He’s now three and has his own switch lite (cheaper than an iPad) but I can’t add it to this app as it only supports three devices. It seems like an easy thing to change for those of us with four or more kids! Overall this app does a few things well and but there are plenty of places for improvement.

Time limits. I wish you could actually set a time, such as 4pm-5pm playing time, and the device wouldn’t work outside of these times. Also wish a time limit could be set for each user and not the device overall.

A good start. There is a lot to like about the Switch Parental Controls app, however I feel a couple of key points are missing: - it’s very evening-focused. The earliest that you can set “play no later than” to is 4pm. We have a child who sometimes gets up (very) early to sneak in some gaming before we get up, and who is grumpy the rest of the day. Morning is also time for chores etc for us. Being able to introduce a “play no earlier than” control would be a big plus - The minimum amount of time that you can lock the console to is 15 minutes. Again, it would be good to be able to lock it to 5 or even 0 minutes (ie always require unlock to play)

Jaz. Overall a great App, I love that I can have the Gaming stoped by a certain time, setting times is easy, would be great to have a play no earlier than... option, we have a 9 yr old that will wake early to play when he should b still sleeping. My only gripe is it’s confusing to set up profiles for each child especially when they both have switch lites and a joint switch console, ( 3 consoles) my son plays games my daughter also wants to play but she can’t if my son has downloaded it on his Nintendo shop profile, the only way I can see them being able to play each other’s games is if u buy the physical game at the shops. I found it so confusing both my kids somehow ended up with 2 profiles.

Restoring calm. Recently satisfied 13yo son’s heart’s desire... a switch. Thanks to Nintendo, we can have a more informed conversation about using it appropriately backed up by data from the parental control app. He knows I will set it to shut down automatically when time limit is reached unless he can show that he is working within the rules we have set.

Would love a bit more control. Would love to be able to set times that you can’t play. With the kids at home all day everyday would love to be able to play times, like school hours or play between 4pm and 8pm.

Excellent. Whilst it has been amazing to be approached by day to day play data there is only one thing that would make the application complete: times. I’d love if not only the application told you how long your child has played, but what times of the day. Aside from this, I believe that this app the a perfect tool to carefully watch your child’s playtime. I highly recommend.

Lock. I just want a button of switch on the app so I can lock and unlock the switch from parental controls so they can’t just sneak and play it until I unlock it

Doesn’t always work. I agree with some people. It needs an option to have the ability to not turn on prior to a certain time, not just a time limit. One major issue is that it gives you a notification even if the switch hasn’t been used telling you that it has. Sometimes an incorrect PIN notification goes off at 2am when everyone is asleep. It definitely needs some work.

Switch needs password. I would love to see the parental controls settings include a password option for the switch to stop little ones using it

Nintendo Switch Parental Review. Proper parental access. Give me viewing access of how long she has been playing the switch. Also allows me to set limits on how long she can play and I can set different limits for different days. Allows me to override my settings with a PIN in case I want to play :-) All in all a great App. 5 stars. 👍

Get this before your children. I’m a child and I will install this in my switch so my mum cant

Simple & effective. So far, it’s working well for our family. I’ve set the daily limit to zero hours so that the younger children have to ask me to put in the passcode every time.

Alarm. I think this app would benefit if you could remotely activate an alarm sound, to help find the device if lost.

Start times to restrictions. Please add start time to the restrictions. My son gets up and plays immediately at 6am. I don’t want this as he needs to do chores and get ready for school first etc. the end time and time limits are brilliant otherwise. Just need that extra step in there for full parental control.

Switch. It helps keep my switch time on a good rate

Good idea, limited functionality. First off, thanks for the app. It’s handy even as a secure pin functionality for the switch. Individual days vs general permissions should have the exact same options. Being able to set up a timer would also be a nice function to have.

Need to be able to block start, not just bedtimes. Parents need to be able to block start, not just bedtimes. I need to be able to prevent them sneaking the Switch into their room at 3am!

This is great. My children use this and they have been following the time limit I love the way this works since I have a few children I would recommend.

Easy to use. This app makes it so easy to mange my child’s devices. Would like to see functionality added that allows a zero minutes play (so when children have lost privileges the device cannot be used - currently the minimum time you can set is 15mins. Would also like to see ability to ‘blacklist’ apps - so, opposite of white lists. There are some apps I don’t wish my children to be using but they still fit within the age bracket. Thanks for a really great app tho - the flexibility, functionality and interface are super easy to use.

Parent Alarm. I like how you can set a time limit for the kids, however it should shut down once the time is up. The alarm can be ignored and you can continue to watch.

So good for yong players on a switch ( Nintendo). I love how my children play but this app is AMAZING!!! My children spend most of their time playing with my dog than on Nintendo switch.

Nice idea.... I’d love to use it but my husband is linked to our switch and it only allows one parent access. It would be good to have the ability to link accounts and both have access.

No time of day control. Dear Nintendo, please enhance this app to allow parents to set time of day controls, similar to Xbox and Apple's Screentime. For example, I would like to be able to restrict use of our Switch until 9am on weekdays. At the moment you have arbitrarily decided that the Switch Parental Control timer resets at 6am. This encourages sneaky child behaviour while parents are sleeping in the morning!

Great app to control device playing time. Great app - works really well. Couple of thoughts for improvement: 1. Please consider having a time that play cannot commence before. Eg, if you only want the child to play after school (and not before school), then you could set a commencement time of say 3.30pm. 2. The intervals for play time limit seem quite inflexible. Perhaps 15 minutes is not enough, but half an hour (double!) is too much. It would be nice to have smaller increments, say every 5 minutes, for play time limits less than an hour. 3. If you want to give your child more time, instead of choosing to disable alarms for the day or change the play time limit, can you add an option that gives the option to increase play time only for that day, in say 5 minute increments? That way there is still a restriction and it is valid only as a one off for that day. This would be quite helpful. If desirable to keep the user interface simple, these options could be enabled by a check box (eg, 1. show smaller time increments, 2. Allow device to only be used after a set time), 3. Extend play limit for today. These would be quite straightforward changes. Thanks for considering these ideas.

Delete this app. This app is confusing and weird like I can. Barely play cause there are to many things happening 🙄🙄🙄

Lacking. This needs more detailed controls. I would like to be able to control that he can only play on the switch from let’s say 12pm-2pm on Tuesday's. Or 9am-10am on Wednesday. There needs to be more flexibility and broader controls. Very unimpressed with this app.

Great when it works. I use this to have set times for how long my kids can play. It doesn’t shut down when they reach their limit. Simply says your over you limit and allows gaming to continue.

Needs work. Like the Xbox platform, each user should have it’s own level of maturity acceptable from games. Accounts, (for more violent games) should be protected by password. Would make things a lot easier.

Very handy. I like this app a lot. It is so useful for limiting screen time. I do wish it had the ability to set a temporary amount of time (say 30 extra minutes) without changing the settings altogether affecting the next day.

I hope this app never existed. This stupid app can make kids cry because some dumb people made a dumb app for dumb parents that don’t care about their children so this exists but srsly I hate it it’s so dumb why do people use this

Parental control is not working probably. I don’t gave me peace of mind. I put parents control it works for 3 days and than I noticed its not working. I have registered 5 times already from the date we bought . Parental control has a glimpse.

Pretty useless. I’m not sure why there isn’t the ability to just stop my son from using this from say 9pm-7am? How is it so limited, can you guys please add a little more to this. The parental controls on the iPad put this to shame.

Notification not enough. If I set my child’s time limit to an hour , all the app does is notify my son that he has played an hour. I need it to shut the switch down.

Doesn’t work. It says make sure the switch is connected to the internet. It is connected, this app is dumb and needs improvement. The time played shows up as 20 mins when my kid has been playing for more than an hour. Fix this non sense

Sucks!. Terrible. Just terrible

Wake up time. There’s no way to completely block the switch (zero minutes) and there no way to set wake up time. It’s always 6am no matter what you do. Doesn’t help us out. We have to take it away daily.

No help. Their help video simple says there’s a need for parental control. Not how to. The app gives a 6 digit code to pair to switch that only has room for four. No help, no support. Yes phone and switch both up to date so absolutely nonsense

Kids find ways to bypass. Live, kids are smart…. They can simply disconnect from the internet within the console (thinking they can bypass it) although its not a way around the parental.. it is annoying for the parents not to be able to monitor the exact played time in real time. Not be able to shutdown the switch remotely if it isn't connected to the network.

My parents hate this so I am pretty lucky but you have to pay monthly it is really bad. Pdj

Generally works, but clock should offer 24 hour restrictions vs 4pm onward. I like that I can set maximum daily usage for my child, however I wish I could restrict access prior to 4pm given we are all home working and schooling during the day. Moving to a 24 hour clock structure would gain a 5th star.

THIS SUCKS. This sucks when the timer goes off kids get depressed and once I was at the end of a game and the dam thing shut down🤬🤬🤬I HATE IT EARLER I was playing for an hour and then a couple hours later it said play time limit reached its really annoying please fix PLEASE 🙏

pls no. don’t tel my momm

Stated functionality missing. Can’t change PIN even after checking Nintendo website and trying to follow instructions of buttons that don’t exist.

my life is ruined. i wish i got a playstation instead because my mom uses this app and playstation doesn't have this so nintendo switch should delete this app or apple should delete this app because if its one month and this is still a app then i might sell my nintendo and get a playstation because its a win win because i could play 2k with my brother and no more timers on my nintendo and this is getting people to change to ps4 or xbox because this

Not So Good. The app itself is well presented and the UI is decent, however, It does not reset time limits at the start of a new day. Also, it just shows a little alarm on the device that any child can easily ignore. Would be better if it locked when the time is up.

Bof. J’aurais aimé pouvoir bloquer certains jeux en particulier

Kc. Can’t adjust parents controls. This is junk and most of the games won’t open due to being blocked because of my sons age. Won’t even play Mario cart.

Ruined my life. I want to die

Way below decent, could easily be better. This app is overall way below decent, but could easily be better with minor changes. If the app had a limit for each user, and a beginning and end time of when the switch could be used, I would gladly give this app a five star review.

Worst app. Horrible app do not download

Almost completely useless. This app is a complete disappointment if you have more than one child using the switch. I’ve been waiting to see if they update it to have more useful features, but still nothing after years of waiting. So many things wrong with this app like not being able to set time limits and content restrictions per user and not being able to restrict time limits throughout the entire day. Currently you can only restrict time from between 4:00pm and 11:45 pm. So if you want to kick your kid off at 12:30 am, or don’t want them to play it first thing in the morning, too bad for you. And how are you supposed to set content restrictions when you have a 16 year old and a 7 year old using the same machine? What a major disappointment from a company that has all the resources and ability to create an app that actually gives parents the ability to properly control their children’s electronics use. Microsoft’s parental controls are superior in every way compared to this embarrassment of an app from Nintendo, and it appears they have done this deliberately to get parents to buy a switch for each user.

Take this app down. This makes the kids to think that there in hell

Horrible. So bad

The setup is useless. If you put a parental control, it’s for the device, not per account. So I n order to be able to use the device once my kids are done, I have to bypass the parental control.

Not really useful…. This is perfect if you only have one person playing the console. It’s impossible to set time-limits for each user, so I found a way around it. I’m giving an hour at the end of which the game shuts down. Then add an hour for the next child, and so on and so forth… I wish I could just give them each an hour through the app with added time on rainy days or as a reward for good grades/behaviour. And I wish to completely lock it on week days. I’m sure it’s doable…

Perfect. The ability to instantly lock the Switch allows me to bend my children to my iron will. 5/5

Can be better. A parent should be able to activate parental controls whenever. In my case, if parental controls have been switched off by entering pin in console there’s no way to over ride that with the app.

App interferes with iPhone lock screen. If this app is running it sometimes breaks touch screen input on my phone when it puts switch symbols on my unlock screen touch stops working. Why does this app mess with the iPhone Lock Screen at all?!

Not what i need. I want a (kid can play between this hour and this hour)

Umm. There’s a problem.. Yeah. I’m a kid that has the controls. But whenever I leave for a while and do other stuff, the timer goes down while my switch is off while I don’t notice. When I leave for a while and my switch is still like 1-3 hours. I come back and the timer already ran out! Please fix this because I don’t get that much playtime with my friends. Please fix this. The app is very good ngl but that bug annoys me.

Ruined my switch. So like lately I’ve been on my switch a lot and with parental controls it’s been hard to play

Master Key. Not an effective tool. There is a lot of videos on YouTube teaching how to bypass the PIN set - Master Key - which my daughter doesn’t want to provide to me.

Awful. Literally the worst attempt at how great this app COULD be.

Not Happy. My kids cannot get the games they want to play even though they have parental permission and all restrictions are removed. We won’t be buying anymore Nintendo products

Profile access within the switch. Frustrating

Hell no. My advice… NEVER TELL YOUR PARENTS OR DOWNLOAD THIS

:(. I just really hate the time limit it is just so annoying >:(

Does not do anything!!!! ( I am happy because I am a kid ). SO WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR EYES OR A GAME THAT GOES ON AND ON? PLAY ALL YOU WHAT UNLESS YOU HAVE THIS APP AND IT WORKS. I PLAY FOR HOURS AND MY DAD DOES NOTHING!!! ( HE EVEN HAS AN ACCOUNT!!) YOUR LIFE IS PRECIOUS SO DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME THANK ME LATER 🤣🤣🤣

🤭. I hope my dad doesn’t find this

You have to stupid pay!!!!!. I got my switch before you made this STUPID online thing that you have to pay to go online 1 STAR PLEASE CHANGE I HATE IT!!!

Locked out. My son played his 2 hour limit yesterday. Today it won’t even let him play the game. It also says he went Over by 2 hours because it sat open on the home screen yesterday after his original 2 hours. Why didn’t it allow him to play today? I had to remove the restriction with my code and now have to set an alarm to get him off which kind of defeats the purpose of this app.

Kids stop using the switch because of this. Some kid literally stop using your consoles because of this so please remove it

Uh oh. I hope my mom doesn't find this app...

If my dad finds this, you’re to blame. I like this app if I was a adult I would rate it 5 stars. But I am a kid and I like my privacy, so I’m not downloading this crap.

Too Linear. Allows only one way to set limits, making it very inflexible and thus nearly worthless. For example, bedtime limits should come with a start AND end time so my child doesn’t get up super early to play because the bedtime restriction expires at midnight. Also needs ability to set a variety of play windows in a day so that I can allow an hour’s morning play, block it during school hours, and then open up play for after school. As it is now I need to do daily manipulating of the settings to accomplish what works best for our family. It’s just too linear! Also, agree with all the other complaints of only one parent can manage settings, and no ability to set different settings for different profiles.

Useful but needs more features. The daily play limit & bedtime alarm features are nice, especially since they don’t prevent the game being saved after the limit is reached or exceeded (so your kid won’t lose game progress but the alarms make continued play hard to enjoy). But I’d like a way to control what hours the game can be played (to prevent play during times it would be disruptive, like when the kid should be getting ready for school or eating dinner), a limit on how long they can play continuously in addition to the daily limit, and a way to display limits & bedtimes on the switch itself where the kid can see them easily. Hope to see more in future updates! :)

Limited, but ok. I just set up parental controls, and maybe I’m just used to more options, but the controls are very limited. You can set a general time limit, but nothing user specific. You can’t set custom off times, which I would like, just a standard bedtime. Also, it’s clunky to add more time when they’ve earned it. Custom off times, user specific times limits, a password on the app itself so my kids can’t steal my phone and add more time themselves, and the ability to set a new time limit when you enter your pin would all be great features to add to the parent controls.

This app is useless. I’m used to parental control settings on iPads and Kindle Fires. Imagine my surprise when this “control” app doesn’t allow for an “on” time. I can set what time the device will suspend at night, but that suspension lifts at midnights. So if my kid wakes at 3 in the morning and wants to play Animal Crossing, he can, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Whoever designed this has CLEARLY never had to set limits for a real child. As others have mentioned, the blanket settings for a whole device, rather than individual users, is not helpful. Not being able to set limits for individual users is not helpful. Basically, this app is dumb. Zero stars. I guess I need to get into the habit of PHYSICALLY HIDING the Switch every night.

Meh…. It’s a great idea but there’s a huge lag (perhaps over 30 minutes) with the monitoring data in terms of how long someone has been playing. I love that you can see how long each profile has played for but you can only put a time limit on the entire switch instead of on each profile on the same switch. This makes it hard to limit playing time if you have multiple kids using the same switch. Fix these two issues and it would be perfect.

Poorly Thought Out. The app and design are sleek and easy to navigate but Nintendo either believes only 1 person ever uses a household’s Switch or is intentionally trying to nudge you to purchasing 1 device per person. The parental control settings are blanketed across the entire device regardless of users. So what does that mean? A parent, a teen, and a child must all be limited to the lowest level. Even though the Switch is designed around player profiles. If the parent wants to play their more mature games a PIN is needed. The same PIN will be applied to the teen’s account. You could whitelist games but that once again seems to apply to all profiles. And the time limit feature? That’s for the entire device. Good luck getting your kids to peacefully share those minutes. There’s no setting 15min for your child, 45min for your teen and 2hr for you! Apparently this has been the status quo for years. Maybe no one ever complained but I find that hard to believe.

Lol. Yea he is already here and I have no problem at it but he doesn’t know if I need him lol he is already sleeping and I have no sleep kids he is so tired and I can’t do anything so he doesn’t know how about you and he is still thinking about you and I think so we just ate some dinner lol I was like oh I know it’s good to see ur good lol I just woke him so he woke me lol he too to sleep in my room he was so mad he was so sad and he doesn’t have anything lol

Needs further development. This parental control app has all the functions you would expect...if you live in 2018. Parental control apps continue to improve, but this one hasn’t. A few basic examples that are fairly ubiquitous in 2020: 1) Time limits on a per-game basis (i.e., limiting Fortnite without cutting off Animal Crossing, etc.); 2) a pause button, both for all devices and per-device; 3) scheduling of daily start times; 4) scheduling of standard ‘time out’ periods (i.e., dinner break, etc.). Other PC apps go further than the suggestions above, but for a company like Nintendo, this list seems like a basic, achievable target for immediate action.

Great app but I’d like one addition.. This app works great and provides everything I need as a parent but I have one suggestion. Currently I can set a time limit and a bedtime but I wish I could add a playtime window - there’s no way to say the switch should be on from 2pm to 8pm, for example. Instead, I have to remember to change the playtime limit from 0 to 2hrs when school is over. Other than that it’s great. Fortunately I can change the play time limit when I’m away from home as I often forget to add play time to turn the switch on after school is over.

So much potential but.... The timer has been wildly inaccurate. My son will pick his game up from the charging station and within 10 minutes it starts to tell him he only has a few minutes left of his 30 min time limit and then it cuts him off around 15-20 min. How the timing is so off is beyond me. It would also be nice if there was a quick way (perhaps just a toggle switch) to just lock and unlock the device from the app. Also unsure of why you can only set a bedtime but not the start of the wake time. Nintendo should perhaps take a cue from the google family link app... that’s more of what parents are looking for here.

Kept locking my son out. Couldn’t take the switch out places. The the game closed and my son tried to open it again it would try to check to see if the game could be played. But since we are in the car and have no wifi it couldn’t do its check. There is no option to put in the PIN number all I can do is turn off the switch. This makes the app unusable as the hole purpose of the switch is to be portable. Then to remove the parental controls you can’t just unregister it from you phone. If you do it that way the switch doesn’t know it’s been un registered. So I had to re-register back to the parental control then unregister from the switch itself.

What’s the Point?. I was super exited when I learned the Switch has parental controls for usage ... until I tested it out. Seriously Nintendo. What’s the point? What’s the point of the parental control if the device does not DISABLE at the end of the parental set time limit? The whole point of the time limit is for them to NOT be able to use the device once the time is up whether they want to or not. A timer is a joke. Now I have physically go and make sure the child is not on the game & if he is I have to take it. Rendering the console useless at the end of the timer actually helps the child PUT THE GAME DOWN & find something else to do w/o the parent having to check on them and/or take the console from them. Apple got it right with the time limit so why can’t Nintendo???

Love the app... wish it does more.... I like the you tube app on my Switch, but my son loves to binge on it, and I rather him doing something else on my Switch. Also, since the you tube app doesn’t switch google account when Nintendo accounts switch , my son ends up using my google account and screwing up my history—I have to manually out of you tube before closing the app to avoid this, which is inconvenient. Any who, I wish there was a way to block certain software from opening for supervised accounts, or a way to put a time limit or specific software. Otherwise, love the app.

Parents can only control total daily time...nothing else!. The very cheapest tablets (like my old Fire tablet that I bought for only $75 5 years ago) have so many parental controls. The Switch only has one: total time played per day. That’s a useful feature, but there are other needed features. The feature that I desperately need is setting specific times when the Switch can be played. For example, I can set my Fire tablet to be used only between 8am - 7pm (or whatever times I want to set). This prevents kids from waking up too early to play the Switch....or even waking up in the night to play. Please add this feature to the next update!

A good start. I agree with others, there’s some features that could make this great. Bare minimum for me is white listing which games are allowed (instead of the age restriction) per user as there’s some games I’m ok with and others I’m not. I’d like to choose which games they can play (and deny any games outside of the approved list, including brand new ones). Bonus points for making each of the profiles password protected and that way you could have custom experiences/restrictions by user... ideally across devices. With of course a Family Admin account(s).

Great, but some things are just plain CRUEL. I got my son a Nintendo switch online subscription to play classic Nintendo games. When he goes to try and play them it says they are age restricted. This is just plain CRUEL Nintendo. Plain CRUEL. Now the only way he can play these games is by Mario maker two and emulators. It defeats the whole purpose why we got the subscription in the first place. If you change this, I will change my rating to five stars, and make another review. Lesson: don’t stop people from playing classic games. They will find another way out of the loophole.

Need ability to set limits per user. We have kids, different ages, and some are better at doing their home work, some are more responsible and others are sneaky. I need to be able to manage time limits, allows them individual pins (parent pin overrides theirs), manage time of day, manage level of restriction per user (I.e. level would be different for a teen vs a 7 year old). We love the family game time too, so parental override would be great to not be bugged by warnings if parents pin was entered. Please make these things happen ASAP. Lots of people need these features and want to quit having to hide the Nintendo for a more manual control.

Needs 1 more specific feature. If you have a household with more than 1 child or if you as an adult play the switch the fact that the timer is for the console rather than the account can get rather annoying. I don’t want the same time limit on a 6 year old as a 15 year old. Or when I’m in the middle of an active (literally working out) game then stop suddenly because my timer is up it gets slightly on the annoying side.

It’s a start.... ... but parental controls need so much more. This simply tells you how long your child has played for, let’s you set up daily time limits in 15 minute increments. and a bed time. It’s missing A LOT — A start time (my kid started waking up SUPER early to play), the ability to suspend play whenever (a KILL switch), as well as to resume play whenever or give bonus minutes (like 5!). I don’t want to constantly have to hide the console like I am now. It’s an absurd game of hide and seek. What I want is the ability to have my kid locked out until he comes home from school, finishes his homework, plays outside, and practices the piano. Not that he can wake up at 12:01am and start playing.

Missing one feature. By far one of the best parts of owning the Switch is having this parental controls app!! However, I can think of one feature that would add to the functionality of the app, and that is to make it possible for whomever is on the switch to request more time... perhaps it would pull up an alert on the phone which could take me to the app to add more time. Because this is not currently possible, the kids have to yell upstairs and I have to open up the app manually and navigate the app to add more time. To do it straight from the notification screen would be even better!!

Love that Parental Controls were created but missing key features.. The whole point of parental controls is the ability to shut down the device or activities of the child is not able to do so himself. This tool just tells, and warns on the device, but doe not stop it after a certain point. It’s like handing a weapon to your child, but putting a very quiet alarm on it saying “put it down.” It only works in this scenario when the child fully listens and cooperates. Anybody with a child knows that kids are never sneaky. Add a kill switch in the app based on parental timing. Locks the device down.

Lame. I am not a parent- but I am a 24 year old graphic designer who works from home and has a bad habit of staying up until 3 am playing splatoon. I was happy to see the switch had a bed time feature that would warn you of the bed time and then shut off the switch when that time comes. That would be really useful for me. Can’t do that tho :/ since for some reason you can only set alarms between 4 pm (who would do that??) and 11:45???? Why is there no midnight option??? Or 1 am? (which is my usual bed time) Again, I’m not a parent so I’m aware this app isn’t made for me, but do people really not let their teenagers play past 11:45?? Idk this just sort of upset me. Guess I’ll just have to get some self control. (Like that will ever happen aha)

Frustrating to be reading reviews that do not get addressed. I feel like people only read the one and 5 star ratings, hence my 1 star. The good: setting time limits are awesome. The bad: the lack of addressing the need and want my many reviewers to have more control then time limit by day. Why no have an ability to have a start time similar to the bed time end feature? Why not be able to have limit by person? Why not be able to shut game down remotely? All these have been asked for by many and for over a year, but the only updates disappointingly have bug fixes but no new features. This app is a few features away from a 5 star. Please add some new features 🙏

WHY NINTENDO?!? WHY?!?!??. On the surface this seems like the perfect tool - an app that syncs with your Nintendo Switch, allowing a parent to set limits and monitor usage. On a most basic level it works, however it has an omission so outrageous it’d be comical- except it is real. Like many of you I have several kids. They each have their own account on the Switch. I want to limit each kid to 45 minutes of play per day. Should be a snap, right? You’d think this would be basic, entry-level functionality for an app like this, but you would be wrong. The SOLE option is a set a time limit for the entire device. I don’t know what else to say. Lots of other parents are asking for this; Nintendo are you listening?!?

Incredibly limited especially family shares switch.. Wow. This is such a limited app. I am really shocked. I understand that Nintendo wants everyone in the family to have their own personal switch but wow! I didn’t realize they punish you for it. First even if everyone in your family who plays it does have their own switch, there is no way to customize times they are able to play. If you limit use to two hours, those two hours can happen any time day or night. But where this app becomes non functional is if more than one person uses the switch in a day. It should be per user. User profiles should be locked and the ability to create new profiles locked. I have one son and my husband and I play the switch randomly. There’s no way to use the time limit section unless i turn it on when I know my son has started playing. Please do better Nintendo to serve families who are not incredibly well off and create ways for adults to help themselves have healthier habits around gaming as well. Just as a smartphone will limit your own access to certain apps during certain times that you set.

Leaves much to be desired. I thought that this app would actually stop my son when the time limit is up, but it just flashes a warning when there’s a few minutes left and when the time limit is reached. I wanted it to not allow him to play anymore at all when time is up. Also, there’s no way to select times for him to play- so if he gets an hour a day he can get that hour at 2 am if he wants. I was hoping to be able to allow it only between 9 am and 9 pm for example. App is just kind of disappointing coming from nintendo, the software to make it more customizable would be easy for them.

Decent but parent time controls need overhaul ASAP.. I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves how easy it is to turn off the time limit, and especially those Super Mario sound effects… but as a parent what if I just want to add SOME time??? Want to add 30 minutes for finished chores or good behavior, bonus hour because cousins are over? Too bad! You can either redo the “Thursday” schedule (and fix it again later) or disable the parent time control carte blanche for the day. We have a custom schedule set for the switch that gives the kids last time on school days more time on the weekends, great, right? Well, the problem is when we would like to extend the time by X minutes or an hour. The only simple option is to completely unchain the thing…. Yes, judge my parenting acumen all you want but this has lead to some longer than intended nights…. And apologies to their mom. Yep it would be a PITA but recode that thing, fix it to be a proper carrot and stick. The feature is great start, but it is time to mature it a bit, see what I did there…?

I hate this app and it is completely useless. I am a 18 year old and I just hate how the annoying time limit still blocks me and I have to go ask my parents if they can put more time on the switch and it can especially be a pain if they aren’t home and sometimes if I text them I have to wait a hour for them to respond I just think it’s ridiculous that one of the most popular video game companies is preventing there fans from playing there own video games! Nintendo you are a joke and you are wasting your money on a garage app that is completely useless! I am really mad about this and I hope this stupid app gets removed from the App Store. I will never rate this garbage app 5 stars this app deserves zero stars!

I use this app every day but. As everyone has said, it need individual restrictions for each account and a password protection option. We also need an option to lock an account after time is up because I caught my son in his room with the system under his blanket. He had exceeded his screen time by 2 hours! I had to start putting the system in a cabinet out of his reach. Setting the restrictions for each child by adding to the time limit would not be convenient. I saw another reviewer suggest this, but it would cause arguments when one of the kids inevitably tries to sneak more time and claim they haven’t gotten their turn or something. Just update the app already Ninty.

Good start, need more control.. With passwords/PINs you should be able to give each user a time limit. Instead they’ve elected to give the Switch a “total time” per day. So, 1 user can use all the minutes leaving other sibling users out of luck if the max time has been reached for the daily limit. I think the concern is that kids could just continue to add users to expand their time but adults also have a PIN so Nintendo should be able to limit access to adults to create new users. Allow “per user” time limits NOT a total time per device, and you’ll have a winner.

It’s a good start, but lacking. I appreciate having a parental controls app to monitor number of hours played, setting cumulative hour limits, and receiving notifications about incorrect pin entries. I do wish the parental controls were more robust. Changes I’d like to see developed: - Setting a start time (ie: 8a, 10:30a, etc) to complement the bed time - Ability to SEE the actual timeframes played for each profile (ie: played 8:17a-9:45a, 6:22p-7:30p, etc.). This could even be set up as a bar graph to see a general overview, with the ability to touch for additional information.

Not sure how well it is locking it down. It often says that he played some amount of time over the limit, even though I have it set to disable the device at the limit. It also sometimes says that the device was unlocked for a certain amount of time. I really can’t tell easily if the controls are not executing according to my parameters or if my son has figured out various ways to disable the controls or hack in. I have changed my password when I think that he might have gotten access. This has been more helpful than not having anything, but it is not preventing my kid from staying one (or more) steps ahead of me!

Does what it says it can do but has issues. After my phone upgraded to version 1.18 I keep getting errors that the app can’t communicate with the console. I have to delete the app and sign in again. This didn’t happen in 1.17. I would love to be able to set a start time for my children to be able to play their switch. If they start playing before school, they will get distracted and not be ready on time. I can’t imagine this would be hard to implement. Support for more than 3 switches would also be nice (I have 4 children) so I had to create a separate account to manage the 4th switch. If I can have up to 8 people on my Nintendo Switch online account, I would imagine that the parental controls app would handle more than 3. Otherwise it does what it does. Once I get the settings figured out my kids haven’t figured out how to get around the parental controls.

Not a tool for real time parental control. I’m grateful this app exists. I’m grateful for the age restrictions. But overall, it seems more like a research tool. What I’m really disappointed with is the time limit function. It doesn’t sync with the switch device anywhere near real time. Sometimes the actual amount of time my kid played only shows up the next day. When the time limit is reached, an actual alarm only goes off on the switch device, which he couldn’t care about any less. I still have to hover over him to hear the alarm avd the wrangle the device out of his clutches. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Needs to be revamped. Left this review a long time ago at 2 stars, changing to 1 star since there has not been any improvements! C’mon Nintendo, we see the technology you’re capable of producing, make this app better!!!!! This whole app needs some major changes like the ability to set time limits for different user accounts on the same switch. Also, needs a setting to restrict play times not just a bedtime. Maybe I want the switch off between 12-1pm or maybe I don’t want it on until after 9am. The current app is too basic. Please consider making it more useful. There also needs to be a “no time” setting, as right now the lowest time you can go is 15 minutes. I want my kids to ask permission before they even play 15 minutes.

Per user time limits. Needs separate daily time limits for each user profile so that one family member can’t monopolize the time leading to arguments. Should have option to exclude a (parent) user profile from daily time limits. Needs ability to temporarily add more time just for today, without having to update the repeating schedule for future days. Needs to be faster and more reliable in sending updates from phone to console - almost always reports an error, often takes multiple minutes, sometimes completely fails. Time played when unlocked after daily bedtime should still be counted under the appropriate profile rather than as extra time attributed to no profile.

Only works for locking the console. The app description purports it is able to track users' play time and give a monthly and a daily summary. However, all it does is show two pieces of information each day: 1) the amount of time that day the parental controls were unlocked, and 2) always the summary note "Didn't Play". So it knows how long the console was used, but then can't track for me what games were played or for how long; rendering the app basically useless. It does allow custom settings for the parental controls. So my kids can't access anything without asking for my pin first. But unless I'm sitting there watching the whole time, I can't track what they play. Just make it work, Nintendo.

Needs more options. Let me start by saying it works great. Here is the problem... I have 4 kids, myself and a husband who all play. I would like to limit my kids screen time separately. If one kid plays for an hour, it should not affect the rest of the kids. I want to give them each their own hour of screen time. And not have to share the hour with the rest of the house. Please make it possible to set different times for each account, not just per gaming console. I can’t buy each kid their own that is just insane. Please update.

Nintendo’s Worst Parental Controls EVER!!. Among all the complaints listed in the reviews here, the part I hate the most is after you set Face or Touch ID to lock the app. When you reopen the app and authenticate, the display is there, but all the controls are frozen. Can’t even do anything, but delete and reinstall the app after that. Also, the Nintendo Switch should’ve had a separate passcode function to protect the user’s data from being accessed, which should happen upon unlocking the console, not upon launching an app. The only true reason I elect to use this app is because it restricts access to my console’s sensitive settings and save data. Other than that, this app is absolute garbage.

Needs better time limit functionality. App is fine for seeing how long he kids have been online and which games they are playing. However, this lacks the ability to shut down their console. The time limit setting is also fairly useless as it simply puts up a transient alert on their screen which is easily missed during intense gameplay and I merely get a notification on my phone, again with no ability to force shutdown. In other words, the app leaves me with only the traditional parenting techniques of threats and negotiations I was hoping would be minimized with a more definitive forced shutdown. Why did Nintendo not make this a true “time limit” and “parental controls?”

Nice to have, but needs more. Perhaps I am spoiled by Apple and Google family controls, but for this one, it would be helpful to be able to grant periodic additional time. For example, if we set a 30 minute limit, but want to have an additional 30 minutes, the only option is to completely disable it and then turn it off manually later, with a very abrupt end. We do sometimes wish we could set limits on neighbor kids' devices... 😏

It’s a start but needs a lot more. Love the idea of parental controls and having an app to makes changes. The app itself is easy to maneuver and figure out. My problem is with the lack of options. We have 2 children of different ages and I can’t establish different settings for each of them. I would also like the ability to block games by title not just age. Some games are too frustrating for my son but other games of the same age rating he plays just fine. The time limit should also be by user. Each child gets a set amount of time each day they can play but this isn’t easily managed with these controls. Nintendo PLEASE address these issues!

Needs updating. I was excited to hear that I could set parental controls using this app. However, there are a few key features missing that really rend this app pretty useless. First, not being able to set the start time…. Seems like an easy fix but it hasn’t happened. Second, not being able to set controls per user, this is ultimately what makes this app useless to us. Lastly, not having an option to completely turn it off with one click of a button. I wish that Nintendo would correct these three items and then the app would be a very useful tool to us parents.

🤗Hi, I’m a Nintendo Fan!!!🤗. I like Nintendo as much as Sega but you actually got to be kidding me 😐 ! As an adult video gamer, I find this app very dumb. You’re literally taking enjoyment away from kids 😭😭😭 !!! Back then, kids could play without worry 😄 . But now we have parents limiting their playtimes to 30 minutes 😖😫😩 !!! Video Games are supposed to be fun but now you guys create an app that crushes the hearts and souls of kids! What ever happened to “family-friendly” 😡😡😡 ??? Even the trailer of this app proved my point! Isn’t the whole point of Nintendo to make video games? THEN WHY RESTRICT YOUR OWN GAMES??? It doesn’t make any sense! You guys are one of my favorite video game companies, so please don’t ruin your careers with a stupid app! Sincerely, -Awesome Adult-

Ok if you have one kid that plays.. Great app but I would like to be able to individually select certain aspects of access for certain users as well as set time limits for individual users on one Switch. If you want to set a time limit it’s only for the console as a whole and then we get back to the same fight with the kiddos about who played longer than who. I also have multiple kids at multiple ages using one Switch so the generic age group settings do not work for me. Again... great app if you have one kid using the switch or all your kids were born in the same year.

The parental controla are what all responsible parents wish for!. Having the ability to control the type of games, ratings level and time that children spend with video games is what parents truly need to allow for responsible play without adverse consequences in kids’ health. Hence, setting forth this review concerning Nintendo’s commitment to responsible use of video games and concern for kids’ health was a MUST. Its great to know that a company like Nintendo has a corporate conscience and not an obsessive interest in profits. From here on I am proud to state that my family will be faithful customers.

Good, but not enough. I’m glad there are parental controls, but they don’t do enough. It would be nice if the controls could make it so the kids were forced to stop playing when the time limit is reached. It would also be nice if I were notified when the time limit was reached. It would also be helpful if the time limit could be set by each child’s profile and not solely by the device. I have 4 children sharing the same device and I want to give each child a 1 or 2 hour time limit each day but the current limit can only be set by device.

Great Jon. I have a toddler who loves to play on his Nintendo Lite but this gives me control of how long he can play on it which is great. And I can disable it or change how short or long he can play on it. It also gives me the option for a set time each day of the week which is way cool. This is a great feature because during school days I definitely keep the minutes that he is on it very limited time…
