Klimper App Description & Overview

What is klimper app? Klimper is a mobile music studio with built-in music theory to spark your creativity and speed up your workflow.

Find Chords that Work

In the chord palette your can explore chords that are available in your selected scale. While a chord is played, related chords are highlighted so you can easily find chord sequences that progress smoothly. Once you found a nice chord sequence, you can drag and drop chords into your song to build your composition upon it.
If you want to start your song with a melody and find a suitable chord progression, you can do that just as well: select notes and tap the search icon to show chords that match your melody fragment. It's real fun to experiment, seeing how different harmonic contexts affect the perception of the same melodic fragment.

Create Beautiful Melodies and Flowing Chord Progressions

In the piano roll, notes that are in harmony as well as the chords' root notes are highlighted. This makes it super easy to create leads, arpeggios and basslines and to experiment with different chord voicings to let your chord progressions flowing nicely.

Intuitive Editing

A simple, yet feature rich and context-aware user interface helps you build up your ideas into whole songs:
Group sections into song parts and arrange them via drag and drop.
Duplicate, copy and paste, playback selected notes.

File Export

Export and share your creations with audio file export.
Edit your song in other Apps with MIDI-file export.

Use your Favorite Instrument Apps

It's just more fun to explore and create with those awesome Instrument Apps that are available in the App Store: Klimper supports Inter-App-Audio Instruments like Animoog and Model 15 as well as Audio Unit Instruments like Ripplemaker and Mersenne.

Seemed like a cool idea.... Seemed like a great idea, I could start a session anywhere and finish up at my main workstation but upon opening the app I had no piano, Rhodes or and anything that resembled a key played instrument, there where only pads and synths available... not very good sounds to find chords and chord progressions. Didn’t bother going any further than that. Refund please. And if there in there somewhere buried they are way to hard to find and still, ima need my 10 spot back g lol..

Great concept, not for iPhone X. First warning is that it’s not notch safe, and the notch does disable creation of sections completely. You will have to just do one long section. Editing notes on the notch is also impacted, but it’s doable. If you just want to export midi to arrange in your DAW like me, it’s still worth using, but this is still false advertising. The piano roll is clunky and awkward, but this is always the case with a touch screen. Placing notes is easy enough, but moving, deleting, highlighting and changing length is painful. It does get easier, but the lack of documentation makes it very frustrating, because you get it to work, then try to figure out why it worked. Now, when it comes to writing music, this app really shines. Creating a chord progression is very intuitive, but the highlighted piano roll really is a game changer when it comes to melodies and basslines. The documentation seems to just be some quick videos, but they’re extremely unclear as to how the gestures really work.

Buggy, clunky interface. Skip this one - not worth 8.99 to do something you can already do in free apps much more easily. Pick a chord progression or looper free app and it will save you some $

The app is good, but could be greatly improved. The app is good, and it got a lot better with the new borrowed chords implement, but some of the instruments, the guitar for example, are super quiet and barely make any sound at all, if this were fixed, I’d probably use the app a whole lot more, it’s a fantastic idea, but there’s just a lot of bugs to work out with it

Good!. I will make my own Minecraft music disc :D There are a few hard to explain and annoying bugs though

Love the chord palette. This is probably my favorite app for experimenting with chord progressions. Quick and easy to try stuff out, especially with the new chord track.

Absolute trash. This is by far the worst music app I have ever used. Customer service is non existent and with each use, there’s a higher degradation of performance.

Good app, but I need some more features.. Great app, but I want some more features like using other chords. For an example, using Fm chord in C major project.

Great idea but needs a few small things!. Great app for getting initial ideas. It’s almost a fully functioning DAW! I just wish it had more scales. It only has the fundamental ones. Seems like an easy update to this great app. Also, the note names don’t fit on the iPhone X screen. Please fix!

I'd like a refund. Used it for a few minutes to check it out. Absolutely not worth the money. Very basic and extremely limited control absolutely should be a free app or non existent.

No change in Scales. The app is cool. Was hoping that they could at least allow to change SCALES!!!!! Maby next update? I’m going to give you guys 5 stars for now. But if I don’t see an option to change scales soon this opinion of mine will probably change. Other than that great job it’s really cool. I just thought that would of been something that you guys would of done from the very beginning.

HELP. Can someone please tell me in the piano roll when I go to make a melody why all my notes are gray and not lit up with color?

Needs improvement. Drum pad takes up to much of the screen. On iPhone XR you can’t see about 3/4’s of it. Also constantly getting stuck on track tabs with no clear way back to the one you want to work on available. Constantly end up tapping everywhere on the screen hoping something will happen. Pinch zoom rarely functions as intended and the crop/delete/cut feature constantly off screen/un-tappable.

Great app, could use some more things. I love the chord progressions that you can make with this app. It shows you chords that work best with each other so I can make chord progressions much better than what my tiny brain can make ;) anyways, this app would be perfect 5 stars if it had some more features. For example: more instruments, a swing rather than simple on the beat time, half steps rather than only using notes in the key, things like these. I would still recommend this for any music lover! Worth the money!

Keeps crashing. I downloaded this a few minutes ago, and the app has plenty of tools and options but it keeps crashing. My phone is up to date so I will update this review again later.

Y’all need FLEXIBILITY. - like the fact that the midi sounds are lovely - hate the fact that there’s no chromatic chords - hate the fact that I can use borrowed chords - please get someone with music theory skills if that’s what’s causing the inflexibility

Mixed review. I want to love it, but there is no METRONOME! If there is, I can’t find it. So I tried to create my own but the drum editor doesn’t line up with the Lead. Now what?

Issues. The exporting feature is confusing. First, I can’t figure out how to label my songs. Then once exported the beginning of the tracks cut off in the first chord. This doesn’t seem like a completed work because of these issues. Please fix this. I like everything else so far and I’d hate to have to ask for a refund.

Great Program. It’s really good but it needs some work, some of the submenus are not visible because of the way iPhone 11 designed the screen, it cuts out, also the looping part doesn’t let to be adjusted, there’s glitches of dragging the chord and not seeing it properly but playing it!

Good but my ears exploded. Ive been messing with this for a few weeks and i liked it. Its nice for some basic ideas if im bored ill just mess around with some chords for inspiration. But a couple of days ago i opened the app and went to hit a chord and my ears got straight EXPLODED I dont know why but the sounds are all messed up and it just blasts random noise super loud. I tried to reinstall and its the same thing. Ill never make a mediocre lo-fi chill step album at this rate smh.

Klimper doesn’t work. The phone app loaded ok and played ok for a while and then it started producing a very distorted chord sounds and finally it just quit and now doesn’t play at all. Don’t waste your money.

Love It, but . . .. I do love this app and the tunes it is helping bring out. One little issue - it crashes when I try to export audio.

Too Primitive. The chords are given only in basic diatonic scales with 0 ability to explore outside of it. This isn’t much better than sitting at my keyboard and playing all the white keys in thirds (hitting the “transpose” button to get different key centers). The sharps and flats are straight up wrong for many of these. Why is it showing me “G#” and “A#” for C minor? C minor is a three flats key. This isn’t hard to program correctly. My last beef is that the chords are played in the most clunky, uninspired voicings possible. Basic root position, in thirds, no spread whatsoever. This app could be so good if JUST THIS was fixed. Give it a bass octave, spread the extensions to the higher octaves, voice things in fifths and fourths, etc. There’s also 0 voice leading from chord to chord, which adds even more to how primitive it sounds. There’s no harmonic motion. Even without letting you escape the diatonic scale, voicing the chords to actually sound good would be way cooler for iOS music production. You already have stored all of these extended chords; just spread their voicings out, and employ some basic internal ability to voice lead even just the extensions.

Poor UX. Unfortunately, I had to reach out to Support to get sound from any track. For example, I had to select an instrument before any sound would come out and this was unintuitive (3 clicks too many in non-obvious places) When I add a new track, it was nearly impossible to find how to make both tracks at the same time. Selecting the instrument you want to chord palette to play with was also impossible. Selecting multiple chords to duplicate as group; calling them verse or chorus or bridge (would be the first things I would’ve thought of) were also not possible. Great idea for (identifying which chords will go well together, based on a scale given in a song) but poor execution when it comes to actually building songs. In need of a user experience designer, so that what was obvious developers is also obvious as the rest of the world.

App is cool and useful however I think a couple added features would make it 5 Stars. I use this app for intonation purposes and it’s really useful for that! However I think it would be much improved if you could implement accidentals easier, (I.e. A7#5) as opposed to chords which are strictly diatonic. Also if the app could loop while the phone is locked that would help me not kill my battery life while practicing. I mainly have been using it for a drone with a metronome so I can’t speak much on the recording functions, but they seem relatively intuitive, especially if you’re new to understanding harmony. It’s cool to be able to visually pair chords with extensions and not have to worry about intervals. I used to use other apps to drone chords but honestly this one is quick and super simple to use, once the app is open you can immediately start, it’s not like it has a long loading time or anything.

Seemingly great.... Except for persistent audio issues. Just installed on fully updated iPad Pro 11 inch, and having issues where there’s no audio until I restart my iPad, which it still happens eventually afterwards. Also synth bass causing a loud pop at beginning of note and then cutting sound. If it weren’t for these major audio issues it would be great.

Good idea, not worth $8. There’s very limited features for this. There’s not even a basic piano sound. Also the app pops and clicks when I play sounds

Pretty useless on an iPhone X. All of the notes in the step editor are hidden behind the notch. Also when the video is done, the controls are hidden to exit. You have to quit the app and go back.

Needs proper au support with midi!. Needs MIDI out for other iOS apps! This great, very fun and inspiring, needs much better inter app midi implementation, especially a way to sync the transport!

A metronome would really help this app.. Ideas would be easier to flesh out. Klimper helps when I have an idea for a chord progression on my morning commute, but it would really be nice if I can get a base for an entire track whenever inspiration strikes. I feel a metronome would make that easier.

Still problems with the iPhone XR. I saw a review with this app not working for the iPhone X and the developer said he fixed it but I still can’t see the names of the cords due to the camera in the way. And also their need to be a feature in this app we’re you can use the piano cords instead of the names of the cords. Thank you for your time.

Distorted audio after first use. This app is horrible! Started out good for first song until I opened up a new project and the midi sound has crackles and weird noises. Then chords won’t play as quarter notes only whole or half time when pressing the chords. More chords are need .... take a look at “Suggester app”...

Great potential, missing features and UX issues. First of all, this is immediately one of my favorite chord progression sandboxes. Don’t get me wrong. The fact that it integrates with the minimoog Model D synth app to play the notes and supports Ableton/MIDI output is extremely exciting. However, there are some significant missing features that I’d expect from an app claiming to take on the scope that it does such as a metronome, a record button, and setting the timing signature. It’s hard to tell how the chord progression will sound until you’ve already dragged the chords to the odd/uncomfortable band at the top of the screen... would honestly be easier to just record it. It’s like the length in bars is too flexible... let me pick the timing signature (e.g. 3/4) and a fixed number of bars for the loop. Really, I think the UX needs to be rethought a bit and some basic features for recording a track need to be added. With refinement, this could be the best songwriting tool an EDM songwriter could have... right now it feels like more of an open beta. Disappointing to spend $9 on what feels like an unfinished product but I would gladly invest more if the developer(s) stay active.

Cool App To Drain Your Battery!. All functionality and coolness of this app is overshadowed by the battery eating feature. This app can use other music apps to generate sound which is neat until you close down Klimper and hours later your iOS device tells you it has 25% battery left and you haven’t touched it all day. So you go investigate in the battery tab in settings, and you find the app that Klimper loaded running in the background and somehow it’s still running. The app isn’t found in the “running apps” view for you to shut it down. There’s no clear instruction on how to shutdown this kind of app. Apple and others will tell you not to do hard shutdowns of apps.... yeah, except for when it’s killing your battery. I don’t even know if doing a hard restart will remove it. Deleting it might be the only option and reinstalling. For this reason, you get 1 star. If Apple allowed users to give a negative value of stars, this would get a -5 stars from me. If I could add a screenshot in a review, I would. I used the Moog Model 15 app that got stuck. I will promptly change my review again once this issue is resolved. I am adding a star for prompt developer support which most apps lack.

Where is the Locrian mode?. Very fun app to play around with. The UI is pretty good, definitely better than most other music making apps I have used. Really my biggest concern is the absence of the Locrian mode. The app lets you select the scale/mode you want to play in, however I can’t seem to find the Locrian mode. Another strange thing is there is both the Ionian mode and Major scale to choose from, but these are the same things... Why give two options for the same mode? So this confuses me.

Was sold until I bought it. Can’t use the whole tone scale. Limited expression

Fantastic App. It’s great. Thank you. The only thing I would suggest is making the piano roll notes easier to extend and make smaller. Sometimes it’s difficult to quickly put the notes exactly where I want. Otherwise it’s very intuitive and a pleasure to use. And add more instruments!!

Only Synth. I Can only play with a synth and any time I try to press the piano, or shift to another lead the app crashes. And I’m not eligible for a refund even though I purchased it less than 10 minutes ago.

Keeps crashing. Please fix

Started well but..... Created my first tune, sounded good but then I closed the app. On reopening it I noticed glitches on playback. Now the app crashes on opening and is unusable. This is a good app that I would like to use but it needs to be more stable. Please fix.

Cool. I like it but I wish could select chords from different keys. If I change the key, it changes the keys of the chords in my composition.

Connectivity. It’s get really interesting if you could enable guitar chords charts for the chords

Very cool. This is a ton of fun to play around with but without AudioBus support it remains in the ‘toy’ department. Would be fantastic to have AB support and hope the developer will consider it.

10 minutes in this is already an indispensable tool.. Was sceptical, but decided it was worth it. I compose on my phone a lot and am always looking for a way to streamline writing. With this setup I think I can pump out great chord progressions with ease. This is a must have.

Exactly what I need. I have been searching for something like this to replace my piano apps and voice memos. I am a composer and spend most my time writing in my studio; however, I needed a quick way to record ideas and compose snippets on the go and at the time an melody pops into my head. Instead of singing, humming into a voice memo or playing my piano app and trying to memorize the part real quick. Anyway, I would only suggest to the dev to add a more practical way of changing tempo and making an option for triplets at a smaller level. You can write quarter note triplets but nothing smaller, forcing you to redesign your note layout, and adjusting the bpm. Regardless, this app is still a perfect app for what I intend to use it for but I could see it being very limited if people were to use it as a platform for full composition.

Not worth the money at all. Since I’ve now I had the app for only 2 days, I have not gone a single time without experiencing buggy issues. The app crashes when being used, plays distorted tones and overall has a frustrating to use operation system. I love the overall concept but would hate to see other people’s hard earned money go down the drain when having the same technical issues I had after spending a hardy $8.99 for an app that seems as if it’s in an early stage of production.

Worth it. I don’t know how it’s only rated 3 stars. You can make some crazy stuff on here. Although I wish they’d add more sounds, I love the way it is.

Needs a metronome or grid. I just wish it had some type of grid or metronome, or both so I can see how it loops around and be sure its in time, especially if im exporting a loop

Great creative tool. Can you please make a mode where you can free play on the chord chart. At the moment. Every time you press a chord you have to press it again to be able to hear it again

Has issues. Not sure if it's just the iPhoneX, but midi editor does not actually label the notes, and trying to change note length is very difficult. Definitely did not feel as easy as the video tutorial made it seem it would be. Still feels like a but of an unfinished app. Good idea, but poor execution presently.

5 mins using and already broken. I would like a refund! I just paid 13.99 for a dud product, it literally crashes within mins, I can not play the chord progressions only the leads

Improvements. The app is good for brainstorming ideas. However there is only 6 instruments. It would be better if you guys could have a few more cool sounds that we could use.

App not working well. Downloaded and seems really buggy. Lots of audio clicks and sound drop outs. Disappointing.

OMG Wonderful songwriting tool. I bought this app years ago and as per usual then started dreaming about my next app. 2021 and I finally start using it today and within 30 minutes of playing around had composed a beautiful piece. An update means once you drag and drop your chord progression in the chord palette it automatically creates the piano roll track for the chords. All subsequent tracks shows chord notes on their respective piano roll's making it easy to stay in key. The built in instruments including synth pad I used for chords, synth arp for lead and violin for melody sound lovely. You can also substitute your other instruments for sound sources and also works well in AUM. You can export as audio file or midi. Some bad reviews due to bugs but all the bugs seem to have been fixed.

A one out of 5 is too high of a rating. DO NOT BUY THIS APP ITS RETARDED BEYOND THE TIME I HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT. I’ll say this. The piano roll has no note names. It the app forces me to create my own chords based on a general C7 chord for example. It simply has a lighter colour on The squares that harmonize with a general C chord. THATS IT. The worst part is the app does not tell me ANYWHERE on the board,on the piano tile, on the side, or on the top, on the bottom, NOWHERE does the app label the name of the note I’m about to add to my supposed “chord”. NO NOTE NAME OR LABEL TO BE SEEN ARE U KIDDING ME DEV? Try playing a drum kit piano roll with no names or even a mark for C3. NOTHING. It is the 100000000% by far the absolute WORST APP IVE EVER SEEN PAID OR FREE AND IT COST ME TEN CANADIAN DOLLARS U US RETARDS. Canada !! DO NOT BUY THIS APP!!! DON’T EVEN DOWNLOAD IT IF ITS FREE!!!

Very good indeed!. After the lastest update and the fact that the developer is committed to improving Klimper is a bonus in my books. I'm having a very creative time with this app. Thanks for bringing this to my iPad!!

Pass on this.. Ive tried to like this app, but i find myself never actually using it. There's really nothing remarkable about it. It's basic function is without polish. The overall user experience is less than ideal.

Good idea that needs work. This app is a great idea with lots of potential. The interface is hard to work with however, and there is a bit of a learning curve to use it. It would be really nice to have a way to lock segments of notes, because it’s too easy to accidentally move something around. Also, when you make a note too short, it doesn’t want to drag out to be long again. Hope I can give this app 5 stars someday. It’s a fun way to jam with yourself. :)

For the next update. Can we get a chord inversion button for the next update

aight..... honestly this app is pretty much unusable as a beat maker, HOWEVER the chord pallet is an excellent tool for producers/musicians looking to come up with cool chord progressions. I hope this app gets some updates!!

Alright. Concept was alright but not what I expected or needed. So now I’ve wasted $9 so thanks for that 🙃

This app is useless. How do I get my money back?

Don’t buy! Terrible App that doesn’t function. This app was the worst $10.00 I have ever spent. It will make me feel better if this review STOPS someone else from buying this terrible application. It does not function at all like the tutorial/ad video made it seem. You cannot change the rhythm of your chord progressions, the sounds are crap and it is glitchy. DO NOT BUY

Good tool. I love this app but there should be a way to use borrowed chords in a chord progression.

Useless. Bought it! Use it! Useless software. Garageband is much better!

Strange that you cannot use the chords. This app has potential but as it stands it does not allow you to use the chords that you pick in any of the tracks. This does not make any sense. The description says that you pick your chords and rop them to build your songs; however it doesn't mention that the chords themselves are not part of your song.

Really quite good, but!. What would make it five stars for me is, when inputting notes. (A column along the left that indicates the "actual notes". Also when inputting "different drums tones" a column along the left indicating the different drums available.) The column for drums I would think is pretty straight forward. The column for notes probably harder. I'm a singer songwriter, writing most of my stuff on guitar and knowing the various notes contained, your app will select the chords built around those notes. So very cool, I'm blown away ~ ~ ~ ~ _/)

Not happy.. The app started glitching and wouldn’t work anymore. Customer support ignored me and wouldn’t give any assistance, what so ever. No refund, nothing.

What!!? Howww no metronome ??!. No metronome in a music app? Really?? How does that work !!??

this app does not function. All this app seems to do is crash on launch. Have tried reinstalling the app and rebooting the iPad and this worked, but only the one time. Since then it only crashes as soon as it is opened and reinstalling & rebooting no longer fixes the issue. Perhaps the developer will address this problem, but it is probably best to wait until the app is fixed before purchasing.

Not satistified. I would like a refund. I was expecting way more flexibility within the app. The app is set up pretty basic.

Has potential but needs more sounds. This is very easy to use and thats a good thing. The interface is simple and within minutes you will be creating cool songs. However, I feel its a bit limited and could use more features and effects. I would like to see the addition of electric guitar and distortion effects. Overall just add more cool sounds. Also, maybe add some icons on the drum menu so we can find things more easily. This app is decent and I would recommend it. Could be 5 stars if they add more features.

Midi issues. Won't export midi

Nice. Was able to figure it out quickly (skipped through the tutorial, sorry!). Made something simple that sounded nice. Could not save MIDI (empty popup box appeared and disappeared) to iCloud or DropBox. Was able to save an audio file. If I could save MIDI, i'd give it 5 stars.
