Going backwards. I have been using this app for years and loved each version. But now I must join the other users in saying the inability to save (or exit) an altered document unless the device is connected is a HUGE problem. I regularly need to read and annotate pdf documents while traveling by air. The inability to work on the documents unless I have an internet connection is a deal-killer for me. So count me among those disappointed customers who now are shopping for an alternative app. This follow the developer’s response. Yes, I know pdfs can be downloaded. I did that. But once opened and marked up, those files cannot saved to the device or even closed if not connected to the internet. That is the problem about which I commented. It is a known issue. As stated in the article you cite “Please note: Documents that are opened while offline will need to stay open in a tab until you save the files to an offline source (such as Local Files) or until you regain internet access. Changes will be saved back to the cloud as each document is closed (or saved manually) while connected to the internet.”

Overall a great app but has bugs. Overall, this is a great app that is a timesaver in signing and annotating documents. A previous bug with Auto-filing is now solved, but other bugs remain. First - why store the app settings and options in the main iOs settings area - most apps only save things like memory usage and notification info there, but they store all settings there - confusing at least, but clunky at best. Also - when it is looking at your cloud files on DropBox - and you go to sort by date - the sort does not work and it stays sorted by name - please fix this as well!! They replied to me that it happens with Box, but it happens with DropBox as well. Storage of documents and access to stored documents is very important and they should take a cue from PDF Expert’s handling of online storage, which is a LOT cleaner. I many times wish I could merge PDF expert’s file handling with iAnnotate’s much stronger annotation capabilities, or at least port some features over from one to the other!! Also, it remains a wish that you could save a particular size of a stock stamp as a customer stamp, there is one I use a lot but it’s too large and I have to re-size it each and every time I use it, it’s much larger than my other custom stamps. New Bug - when you save something such as “Today’s Date” - when you try to edit the stock size or font - iAnnotate crashes....

My grading app for years. Dropping a long overdue review to endorse this app for grading and reviewing student work. No paper to carry around and cloud integration makes me able to make progress virtually anywhere. I use it in a university setting where all submissions can be made electronically and saved to my preferred location for review. Auto-converts word docs to pdfs for the folks that cannot follow directions and submit their assignments as pdfs - big time-saver compared to early versions that didn't do this if my memory is correct. I primarily make annotations using an Apple Pencil, the highlight tool, and the text entry box - my handwriting isn't great. The highlight tool can be wonky sometimes - especially when trying to highlight content across pages or in tables. Students sometimes try to access annotated documents on mobile devices and may not see all feedback. I just have to train them to look for both hand-written comments and feedback boxes. Preview on Mac or acrobat reader on windows machines both display complete annotations.

Keeps getting worse. Why does this app keep getting worse with every update? The problems with file management have been well documented. The latest change involves the navigation tool. It used to be on the left margin, and would show a list of icons representing each annotation you made, with page numbers indicated for each icon. Clicking on the icon brought you to that annotation in your document, and if you want to go to the next annotation, you simply clicked on the next icon. Now, that panel is a pop up menu, with no page number listed. So, in a 50 page document with 25 annotations, how do you begin to decide which icon to click if you want to go to an annotation on page 30? Then, after you click on an icon, the pop-up menu disappears, so when you realize you wanted to go to a different annotation, you have to bring up the pop-up menu again. Even worse, the menu does not indicate which icon you last clicked on, so you can’t even figure out which icon is for the next annotation, let alone an annotation that might be 10 pages further in the document. I’m ready to go back to version 3, or look elsewhere.

Memory Problem. To developers response, regarding to Memory Management, I never said that I am using iA3. I bought iA4 and this memory problem occurred on iA4! Why are you assume iA3? Why? Are you trying to show this problem is my fault using old version? It's funny. ------- Vertical and smooth scrolling is excellent. This continuous scrolling experience is fantastic. And this is why I like iAnnotate PDF and this differentiate from Goodreader which provides only very unnatural vertical scrolling. However, this has some critical problems. 1. Memory Management I put into this app 6 PDF files of 10GB in my iPad. With working and annotating one PDF file(which is 1.4GB), this app occupies my iPad from 10GB to 20GB. The iPad starts to warn me to remove some app or files. At that time, I was using only this app, iAnnotate. This app has a terrible problem of memory mgt. With annotating big size PDF file, this app fails to manage file size stably. 2. Page numbering consistency I have scanned paper books into PDF files. To make PDF scanned file page number with original paper book, I am using Acrobat Pro and use two page numbering system. However, this app is using two file system and this is confusing. I hope to use one numbering system like Goodreader. Goodreader uses modified page numbering system. This is better. I think.

Can't appreciate it enough. I have had this app ever since I have had an iPad. It makes working with PDFs a breeze and it is one of the very few apps that have support for all the cloud services. It is a powerful annotating tool, and much cheaper and better than other PDF applications. Really appreciate the good old non-subscription model too. My only suggestion would be integration with Evernote whose annotation tools are not appropriate for working with text. Thank you to the BranchFire team for this wonderful app.

For years…. Do you have an app you just use, you depend on it to work right every time, you launch it and it works as advertised? This app is mine. I receive a lot of questionnaires and I want them nice and neat when I’m done filling them out, this does it with me. I’ve used it for years, when for example a car maker makes a PDF of the manuals. I download into iAnnotate to do word searches. It finds every instance, puts them in a clickable list. The one time I emailed support with a question they responded with an answer and a suggestion to improve my workflow outside the app. I responded to say thanks and they responded again. Good people and great app.

Great app, but.... It’s a great app for iPads, but not for iPhone 8 plus, well, that’s the case for me. I cannot open the toolbox feature anymore even though I’m already on landscape mode. It’s still the case even after applying several suggestions from Branchfire tech support. In addition, when I could still open the toolbox feature and I’d make changes on a pdf file, when I take a look at the same pdf file in my iPad, the corrections I’ve made in my iPhone appear larger in my iPad than before. So I find it best to just work on the pdf file in one device, my iPad, rather than switching back and forth between devices and between modes. But as an overall, this app is awesome! It’s easy and convenient to use on an iPad, especially when proofreading documents. I just wish it’d makes things easier for me on my iPhone.

Fix the Bugs!. The app has always been cranky since I cannot allow individual folders to sync with Dropbox (you do not get access to entire Dropbox; you do not need it), but the latest update has made importing files a nightmare. Conversions from Word to PDF cause the system to stall and often just stop. Imports go to the local files rather than individual folders, so everything has to be moved again, and the app continues to lack a basic spell check feature. I use this app to grade essays, so I spend hours and hours in it per week, and today, downloading a mere 11 papers was a frustrating experience. Please fix the app, or I will begin shopping for an app that is more useful and more responsive.

Poor file accessibility. This app was great 4y ago when file access options on iPads were more limited. But it's ridiculously dated now when it comes to moving pdf's around. A good example is today when I needed to sign a pdf form. IAnnotate will only find files stored in GDrive, the IAnnotate folder, and iTunes. I don't use GDrive any longer. I don't use iTunes either (use iCloud some). And the IAnnotate folder is not accessible from Gmail (or anything as far as I can tell). I tried saving the file locally and then using the Files app to move it to IAnnotate, but that folder is inaccessible. There's something not being updated with ongoing releases of this software to make it compatible with current file access on iOS, which has been a thing for at least a couple of years. I see no settings to change to fix this and, yes, my software is ALL up do date. Oh well... time to move on from what was otherwise a pretty useful app.

Dropbox Connectivity Ruined in New Version. Using iAnnotatePDF, I had everything at my fingertips, tons of reference material for my job that I could read and annotate whether I was online or out in the field far from wifi or cellular. If I was connected, my annotations instantly zipped via Dropbox to my desktop or wherever. If I was disconnected, the changes would sync once I got within range again. It worked PERFECTLY for me. Then came along the FANTABULOUS, EXCITING and INSANELY GREAT iAnnotate4, and now the thing seems to be designed solely for those who are ALWAYS CONNECTED to the cloud, or those who are willing (and able) to constantly move their documents back and forth via iTunes or something. I may be wrong (I often am) and there might be a way to make it work like before, but like most developers these days, you cannot find help. It WAS a good app back before the “improvement”, now I’m looking for some other way to do things the way I want to do them, not the way some dude in tight-jeans and green hair thinks is spiffy. Ruined my experience and opinion of this company! IF YOU HAVE A WAY I CAN SYNC TO DROPBOX WITHOUT CONSTANT CONNECTIVITY TO THE CLOUD PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

PDF Expert vs. iAnnotate 4 : Like Apple vs. Nokia. Readdle PDF Expert is a combination of Caterpillar horsepower and Mercedes quality engineering compared to iAnnotate 4 which has fallen mightily to a combination of Toyota and Subaru. PDF Expert is for power users who demand reliability and quality for multi-hundred GB libraries whereas iAnnotate 4 is great for weekend users not using large libraries. Readdle continuously updates their product with performance improvements and reliability enhancements whereas iAnnotate 4 still has a fatal design flaw in their once solid Full Library Search. As a former longtime iAnnotate user I have finally given up and switched to PDF Expert. They are “Apple’ now and iAnnotate has become “Nokia". All the 5-star ratings for iAnnotate are outdated and outmoded.

Not practical for students. The selling feature for me is the ability to export annotations to flat file sans document. However, there is a lot of improvements that need to be made to make the app valuable to a student. The tools are great, use is frustrating. I was so excited to see the outline feature but highlighting text does not auto-create a note with the desired text. When reviewing annotations (in app), only a glossary of the highlighting or affects (stamps, etc.) applied and a page number -no text! So when exporting, list of highlights - no text. When you have 300+ page pdfs to annotate, the short list is invaluable. Still trying to figure out the sync feature, the original document is in ibooks (pdf), but I can’t get my comments to sync to the file. The tutorials, online forum, chat bot were of no help. If all you need to do is highlight and insert a few comments, this is your product. But beyond that. While I love the tools, it’s highly impractical for students. If pressed for time, I can not recommend this product.

Permanent error saving documents. For over a year now, every document I have on the iAnnotate app on iPad has an error message saying “there was an error saving document. Please check internet connection.” This happens whether I have a great connection to Wi-Fi, or if I’m on cellular. Therefore, I cannot close any document that has been opened because the program thinks it is not saved. Furthermore, I’ve tried the ‘save to’ option, but it only gives me the option save to Box, and fails not only to let me choose what Box folder, but to Box in general at all. So the function completely doesn’t work.

Highly responsive customer service. I have used this as well as previous versions of iAnnotate and have reached out to customer service several times. I have always received prompt and helpful responses. I had an excellent response just today, about a problem that affected my daily use of iAnnotate for scholarly writing. The solution was very easy, but I could not see what was going wrong and could not find a way to document it from my iPad. Customer service figured it out for me, and I fixed the problem in about 3 minutes. Wonderful!

Can no longer move files from iTunes Sharing to Local. Just upgraded from v3 to v4. I can transfer files from my laptop to iAnnotate, just as in v3. They are automatically placed in an iTunes Sharing folder. I used to always be able to then move them to the Local folder. V4, however, no longer allows such a move. The files can be “copied” from iTunes Sharing to Local. But then when they are deleted from iTunes Sharing, they are also deleted from Local. Why can Local no longer be used as a storage bin? How do you get files from your computer into Local? I would like to return to iAnnotate v3. Can you tell me how to do that?

Bugs, crashes, previous review randomly deleted.. My previous review was a 3 star but it randomly disappeared without my doing but I’ve been dealing with the same issues for the last 3 to 4 years with this app. Resizing text box randomly decides you can’t changer size of box from the right side, have to either do it on the left side of the box or re-edit the text box. Search function within a PDF recently isn’t working. Constant crashes, today alone in the last hour it has crashed 6x (I’m trying to study for an exam!). I’ve only stuck with this app because I have all my notes on here, and it would be too much work to transfer them all to another note taking app.

Great UI, terrible crashes. So this still has the best UI for reading and markup of any PDF app on the ipad, bar none. The only competitor is PDF Expert, and this one is vastly better---makes it easier to get what you need done without cluttering the interface. But... for months now it's been plagued with constant crashes. Basically every time I open a new PDF (on my 2nd gen 11inch ipad pro with regular os updates), I can read it for a couple minutes, and then the whole app crashes. Then I open it again, and it's fine---the PDF is still open, whatever. So it's just an annoyance. But it's a really annoying annoyance. I just plan for whenever I open a PDF it crashes now.

Ruined app, still waiting on promised fix. Like the commenter above, I have used iAnnotate for many years. It is a critical tool for my everyday work. But unless the promised fix to automatically save files locally on the device comes soon, I will be switching to an app that includes that feature. The responder from Branchfire commented on the previous commenter’s post on November 20th. It is December 19th and still no fix in an update. When is the fix coming? I cannot deal with my documents disappearing, particularly when I’m not finished editing them or when I need to go back to them. There was NO ADVANCE NOTICE via email or a notification on the app. Documents just suddenly started disappearing and cannot be found. I have lost HOURS of editing work. This must be fixed. If it isn’t, I will not only not use this app anymore but will never use another Branchfire product. It is terribly inconsiderate to make a major change in your product with no warning. Very poor decision that should be changed immediately.

Search no longer searches document I’m currently reading. I have used and loved iAnnotate from its earliest iterations. It was originally how I justified my “need” for an iPad. So I have been a longtime fan and encouraged friends over the years to download it. Recently I have encountered 2 problems with the search feature that are frustrating. If I am reading a document and open the search function to search the document, it informs me at the bottom the hits for the search in my library but fails to show me the hits in the document I currently have open as it has always done in the past. The second issue is when I have the search open and the open another app, when I come back, the search is filled with a blue background and is unusable. I have to then quit iAnnotate and reopen to fix it.

Reviewing papers is a breeze. I have used an app on iOS for nearly a decade. It allows me to store lots of journal articles and the ability to annotate them. I had a lengthy dissertation to review and return those comments to the author. After getting through more than 100 pages, I tried to export them and open the commented article in Acrobat only to find that the comments could not be viewed. His dissertation advisor recommended iAnnotate. Best $10 app I have purchased in many years. The tools are great. I like that the stylus gives a fine line, it's like writing on the real paper. Highlight does well, open the note to type. When I exported to Acrobat everything was just where it should be. What don't I like? I have numerous toolbars on the side, I don't know how to close them. It is a little clumsy to move comments around. Grabbing and moving takes a little patience. Nonetheless it works well. I heartily recommend this app.

Latest update is absurd. So navigating through documents, searching, using bookmarks and notes have undergone a complete change for what i can only assume is to make it easier for someone on an iPhone. Before this app-breaking update I could see thumbnails of pages on the left, or searches, or bookmarks and the entire document would resize itself so i could see the full page along with the search or bookmarks on the left. Now the geniuses who make this app have decided to put the search or thumbnails or notes ON TOP OF the page. Why would this be an improvement? Now the page is obscured so I have to find one word of many I’m searching, go to that page, and then close the search window to read what I need. Then reopen the search window start again and close when I find the next instance. Now I basically need to find out how to restore the previous version that I felt deserved 5 stars. What the hell is the developer thinking?

Unless you like wasting time and $$, Don’t buy this program. I was a huge fan of iAnnotate3, but this new version ruined the program. It has a fatal flaw in which it unpredictably fails to save your work locally. If you are not continuously connected to the cloud, your work will disappear. There are numerous comments online about this flaw, which the software developer has failed to fix. Unfortunately, I didn’t know about this, and I have lost literally THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in billed time because all my work simply disappeared. No warnings, nothing. Once I discovered the flaw. I re-created it repeatedly by annotating a PDF, closing it, and all my annotations would disappear - over and over again. I have made the switch to PDF Expert, and will never look back. Given the software developer’s failure to fix this flaw despite multiple reports online,I will also never purchase another product made by Branchfire.

Not ideal with the Apple Pencil. I like iAnnotate for how flexible it is: you can customize the tools, you can do all sorts of annotations and works on a ton of file formats. But the big problem: iAnnotate works very badly with Apple Pencils. You can’t easily edit what you have written. You can’t add to what you have written because every annotation with the pencil blocks out a large rectangle. And if you switch back from pencil to finger, you often end up accidentally writing on the page. Also the writing doesn’t seem to be sensitive to pressure and hence doesn’t look very nice. All of this is really something that they should have figured out by now.

Clunky and sloppy highlighting. I mainly need the ability to highlight PDFs and add notes. Too expensive for its mediocrity. I nearly gave it 2 stars. Notes do not allow for different text formats within the same note, e.g. you can’t make just one word bold or italic, it’s all or nothing. Highlighter tool is really sloppy. Huge streak that bleeds into rows above and below. App has difficulty distinguishing line by line, it wants to highlight while blocks sometimes. Would be nice to have a few color palette themes. While the concept of customizing the tool bar sounds nice there are some tools that just seem inherent to basic functionality that should be a little more baked in, instead of needing to add it to a tool bar for the rare occasion that I need it. I.e. maybe should just be able to use/open a tool directly from the toolbox. Ability to open multiple documents at once and bounce back and forth is very nice.

Disappointing. Great annotation features. However, it doesn’t let you simply open a PDF file — it has to copy the file into its own special area before you can work on it. This means it doesn’t play well with other apps. If you work on a file in iAnnotate and later want to open it in another app you won’t see any of the highlights because it’s not the same file. I looked in settings, but there doesn’t seem to be any way to change this behavior. Only had it for a couple of hours before regretting that I had spent the $10.

Good PDF app, excellent customer service. I had originally given this a very negative review. The creators of this app immediately got back to me and tried to answer my question. I didn’t understand and continued to give them a bad review. They contacted me again and finally explained what to do. Once I realized their instructions, I tried it and actually it worked perfectly. I have to upgrade my rating and of course give them a pat on the head for excellent customer service and attempt to please. The interface is still a bit cumbersome to learn how to use, but my rating of this app has been greatly upgraded now that I understand it better and I appreciate their help in learning its functions.

Such a solid app. I record alot of audiobooks so this app is amazing for annotating books and scripts. Very intuitive and gives you tons of options for navigating and customizing annotations. The only thing I find extremely annoying is when building custom tool bars.. If you want to take a tool out of the tool bar then you must grab and drag the tool out of the sidebar. Which would be fine, but it doesn't register the hold on the tool so it might take 50 or 60 tries before you can take 1 tool out of the tool bar. Other than that tiny thing this app is amazing.

I really want to love this app, but. I have been using this app since it’s early days. Unfortunately, as new versions are rolled out, the app seems to have more issues to deal with. The most annoying feature I currently see is the delete feature, which I don’t see any option for disabling it. Each time I tab with my Apple Pencil 2 to add a dot , the texts gets highlighted and I’m prompted to delete or tab elsewhere creating an unwanted dot. I’m also unable to the add and see the 2 erasers at the same time in the tool menu. I’ m stuck with either or. I just need an easily accessible eraser to either delete one item at the time or whole annotations.

This app is falling from grace. This has been my go-to app for editing powerpoints and PDFs for years. The new features like making boxes and circles were a welcome addition to the toolbox and has made my annotations much better as a result. I still love the color options, the ability to save an entire palate of highlighters, pens, text boxes, etc. Linking to Dropbox has been a breeze. When the app works, it works great. WHEN it works. These days the app crashes as soon as I try to click the icon to open it. So all those excellent features that I love about the program don’t matter because I can’t even access them. Hoping that there will be a nice patch soon or something that can fix the glitches in the system. Until then I would have a hard time recommending anyone get the app as it is, when it can’t even open.

Highlighter colors. It’s a great app in many respects. I’m not sure if this is possible, but I would like to have the option to either permanently change highlighter colors, or add new highlighter colors to my toolbox. I use the app to read for narration. Being able to highlight for different characters is useful, but ideally one would use different colors for each character. However some of your preset highlighter colors are too dark and make it hard to read the text. Yes, I know I can go in and individually choose a color, but there doesn’t seem to be a quick way to save it if I want to reuse that new color. It’s extremely time consuming to go in there and change the color Every. Single. Time. If it’s a text with a lot of dialogue with different characters speaking. Thanks!

Disappointing. I rely on this app to mark up text heavy PDFs using my Apple Pencil, and I feel compelled to describe my disappointing experience. First, the “active” annotation box is not intuitive. It’s difficult to go back to an annotation that you’ve already made to revise it further. It takes too many steps to do that. And it’s annoying how easy annotation boxes can be inadvertently moved around. Second, the app picks up errant marks from my hand resting on the screen when I mark up a PDF. I tried the wrist protection feature but it does not work well. Third, sometimes pages on the PDF appear blank when I scroll through. So I have to close the app and reopen it for them to appear. Fourth, once the app kept crashing in the middle of me trying to mark up a PDF. When I reopened the file, I received an alert indicating “Crash Detected: It appears that the app was improperly shut down and forced to restart” (which makes no sense) and the last few changes I had made were not saved. Finally, and this is the WORST part — on occasion, when I am working in a PDF, all of a sudden all of my annotations disappear, all at once. After I frantically scroll through the PDF, they all reappear again. But one time, they never reappeared. I closed the app and reopened it and they were just gone. NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Great overall, but seems to have two major flaws…. The two serious drawbacks: there doesn’t seem to be any way to delete all annotations from a document at once, and it also doesn’t seem to be possible to import all documents from a folder simultaneously—and having to do both of these functions one item at a time when there are dozens or even hundreds of items involved is both extremely time-consuming and highly tedious and frustrating! If the designers would fix these issues, I’d be perfectly happy to give iAnnotate 5 stars because it’s a pretty great little app otherwise.

Highly Recommended!. I’ve been using this app for almost a year. It’s essential that i have a PDF Editor on my phone now that I’ve been working remotely. It’s worth every cent i paid for, heck I would be willing to pay more for this. The best thing about it? It’s a one time purchase! None of that subscription nonsense for an app of this kind! The subscription model makes sense for streaming apps. But charging a recurring rate monthly for a PDF editor is extortion, plain and simple.

New to the app and enjoying it, but.... I just downloaded this app, and I’ve been familiarizing myself with all of the tools. I think it is very useful; however, I was wondering about a few things: 1. Is there a way to set my Apple Pencil in “navigation mode” so that anytime I want to scroll with my pencil, it doesn’t automatically write? (I know I can scroll with my finger, but it would be great to be able to scroll with my pencil without writing.) 2. Can you add an “undo” tool that goes back maybe three or four times? That would be amazing! 3. Is there a way to add a note to the highlight that keeps the note the color of the highlight? This would be great for using a color coding system in my highlighting and attached notes to that specific highlight. I see that I can add a note from the highlight, but it doesn’t keep it the original color. I also see I can add a note from the “note tool” and change the color, but it would be so much more user friendly if whatever color you’re highlighting in, when you add a note, it’s the exact same color as the highlight. If you can make these changes, I’d love the app even more! Thanks for taking the time to read my review. 😊

Great for Students. I love this app. I use it every day in class to take notes on the power points and outlines that my professors post ahead of time. I love that I can make notes, add text, photos, or write and I know that there is much more this app can do. Sometimes I have a little trouble saving the annotated documents back to my google drive, but I have not lost any documents and I’ve always figured out how to get them to save eventually. My friends often ask me to share my notes because I can add “sticky notes” directly to the slides, next to the parts that relate to my notes and their computers cannot do that.

The new iAnnotate is a disaster. I was dependent on the older version of iAnnotate for a long time. It wasn't perfect, but it served my needs well. Then it started crashing like crazy and, not being supported anymore, I felt forced to shell out $10 a second time for v4, even though none of the new features are relevant to me. Unfortunately all the old features are now garbage. It crashes constantly (on a new iPad with plenty of space). Nothing works smoothly anymore. And instead of fixing the terrible delete function that used to say it deleted the file completely even though it actually only deleted it from your device, not the cloud, it now does delete both -- and there's a spelling error in the warning message! The new version is basically a scam. Avoid it.

Always on top. Don’t you hate when you buy the latest and greatest device and the software lacks behind? When I got my iPad 3 with Retina I was so disappointed that no PDF reader could take advantage of the Retina resolution - until I found iAnnotate. And boy, was the rendering quick. Fast forward to 2018, day one owner of the new iPad Pro 12.9” - again iAnnotate did not disappoint. It took them literally days to lead the pack of PDF readers to take full advantage of the device’s incredible screen real estate. There is essentially absolutely no reason to print out anything anymore. The reason why I never switched to another app all these years is because I love to browse the page thump prints while seeing the full page. This allows me quickly to browse through large documents just by seeing the page structure of headlines, tables and charts, and spotting what I was looking for. No other reader has that, you can either see the page or the thump prints, but not both. I use iAnnotate as a fancy reader, and use Acrobat for editing on the Mac.

Continue Fixing Search, Please. Update: I posted this review AFTER the most recent app update, and it really isn't fixed. I keep checking for new updates or hoping I missed something, but every single time I click out of the search, the entire search disappears. I'm happy you've started to fix the new issues with the search function, but I DESPERATELY need the search and the results to stay after I've clicked out of it. I often search something with 20+ results, and need to click on each and every one of them to check them in my document. I cannot possibly re-search the same word 20 times and then have to remember which instance I was on. I'm really not sure why you "fixed" something that was never broken. My work flow went from seamless to clunky and time-wasting.

Good app, steep learning in curve.. This app works well, but the interface is clunky and not very intuitive. I am currently using it to read and summarize depositions. It was difficult to figure out how to turn on and off the highlighting functions. Further, when in highlighting mode, you cannot scroll the page. Next, thing to figure out was how to get the highlighted sections emailed to me so I could use them to compose my summary. It does it, but it’s not clearly labeled. Once you “learn” how to use the app, it works very well. The email with my highlights only, is invaluable in getting the summary done. I’m happy enough to give it 4 stars, but it could have been five with a more intuitive interface.

Never a disappointment. I have been using this app for a number of years now and it never disappoints. From filling in pdf forms and sending them where they need to go to being a pivotal part of turning a paper intensive flight department into paperless one. We use iAnnotate on our electronic flight bags to safeguard daily flight paper work we need quick access to in rider to meet regulatory requirements. We can also easily sign the paperwork or make “pen and ink” changes in the ever changing flight operations world! Thus is the only application I use that I don’t have a “wish list” of changes for.

Frustration!. I used the old iAnnotate for years and recommended to everyone I know. I had everything set up for my particular needs (mostly grading college papers), with customized stamps and tool bars etc. I decided to support the developer and buy the new one and started using it today when I have a stack of papers to grade. So, I spent time as I was going along with the first couple of papers to set up tool bars, etc. made new stamps. I took a 15 minute break after the 3rd paper, and when I came back to the app MY NEW TOOL BAR HAD DISAPPEARED. I don't have time for this! I'm conducting a workshop on grading using an iPad on Tuesday (October 2) and was going to recommend the new version, but now, how can I? Tell my colleagues that their hard work will be wasted if they leave the app?

Navigation. Love this app and use it all day every day. Most recent update seems to have eliminated the left hand search pane in favor of a pop up window. The old method allowed me to keep the left pane open to show all my annotations and still interact with the document. New approach makes me open and close the annotation list every time. This significantly interrupts my workflow for no obvious gain. Has been a great product for so many years but this change seems retrograde for heavy users. Bob S.

Major problems on iPad Pro. I am a brand new user of this software but bought it in recommendation. I don’t know if the issues I’m having are specific to iPad Pro, but it’s a mess. Almost all the time, the top menu somehow ends up obscured behind the iPad’s own black bar at the top, rendering it unusable. And when you change orientation of the device (from portrait to landscape back to portrait), somehow the entire app is rendered higher up on the screen, leaving empty gray space at the bottom of the screen. Every time you switch orientation again, this offset increases. I have to force-quit the app and restart to address either issue. It is utterly painful to use. Also, I can’t find any list of highlighted words anywhere, but searching for features like “list of annotations” online suggests this is supported. It’s possible the option does exist but I can’t find it because I can so rarely see all of the app.

Problematic and buggy. I am a big fan of iAnnotate and have used previous version for years. It is always reliable. I just updated to the latest version. I then spent many hours commenting on a paper over a few week period. This morning I started up the app to forward it to my collaborator, and the paper was gone. The lesson I learned is that in the current version, make sure each file is saved on the local disk. If you do that, the auto-save will protect you. If not, you may find the tab of the paper you have been marking up gone after your iPAD goes to sleep, with out a copy on the disk. In every other respect, iAnnotate4 is an improvement and my go to app for commenting on manuscripts.

Overall very helpful but not exactly what I need. I am in veterinary school and I use this app to take notes daily. It is nice that you can write on the PowerPoint or other document, my main issue is that there is no way of adding a blank space next to the PowerPoint to write notes on. I am one that uses the handout 3 slides/page notes when I print because I take so many notes. Currently I have to open everything on my computer, save it as a PDF with the notes format then move it over to google drive before I can open it on the app. It is very frustrating and I have yet to find an app that will let me do this without using my computer. I hope their developers keep this in mind because I have read about students equally as frustrated with me but no solutions have come. (I would use one note because they have this feature but I only have google accounts and that requires a Microsoft account) Sorry for the long review but this is great for those students who don't need a lot of space to write! (Except for the random times it decides to shut off but all annotations are saved)

Not impressed with 4. I am disappointed that you removed the double tap feature to turn on and off the highlight tool. The second disappointment is the removal of the tool to send the annotation and marked up PDF. We read legal depositions and highlight parts to make an annotations of the important parts. The loss of these tools is disappointing, even using the Apple Pencil doesn’t help. It would be nice if the pen defaulted to highlight rather than the red pen that we have little use for. The second tool would be a timer. Start an icon and when I’m done with the doc icon to stop then paste the time in a note. Steve McK

Great app, but never any updates!. I do all my grading and read pdf files with this app, and I’ve been using it for years. There is one much needed feature I wish they would implement: the ability to flatten multiple documents at once. Doing it one at a time for 30 student papers is a major pain. Also there is unfortunately no way to save and export your settings for use on another device. I just got a new iPad and I had to create from scratch my dozen or so customized stamps and toolbars. Update: this is still my grading app, but I am continuously disappointed by the lack of updates. iPads have gotten better technology over the years yet this app has not kept up. I have been begging them to institute a feature to flatten multiple documents at once. As a former computer programmer I know that can be done. I grade 30 papers I should not have to spend all this time flattening them individually. There needs to be a smarter arrangement of toolbars. I should be able to access more tools at once, where its through smaller icons or multiple bars displayed at once. And there should by now be OCR for text that are image files. And it should sync better across devices. My toolbars should be able to be mirrored on my phone or on a different iPad. I spent $10 on this app 13 years ago and it’s done it’s Job. But it needs to keep with the times.

Good… But not great for narrating. I wish the creators of this app would work with audiobook narrators to learn how they can improve it. Because we use it every day… Or, I should say — we used to. It’s such a great app, and superior in so many ways, however, there are many many features that narrators would love to have improved upon — like auto scroll, not crashing as much, etc. — that we would love to implement, so that we can continue using it. As of now, many, many, audiobook, narrators have stopped using this app, because it’s substantially subpar to other apps, like PDF reader, good notes, notability, and even adobe acrobat DC (which means that people are paying money NOT to use this app).

Good but needs major improvement still. Gets a little buggy when you have a lot of text on powerpoint slides with large images. The auto add markup to annotations option should automatically be turned on when first using this app; it took me a whole year of frustratingly using iAnnotate without it to think about going into the settings and seeing if there's something to help. I'm talking about it making a separate test box for every single new annotation on each slide---that is suuuuuper annoying!!! Turning the auto add markup ON helps a little, but it's still annoying. Can't you just turn off the annoying text boxes all together by default? And if you want to add one in, do it yourself. That would make it so much more convenient.

Love it, but no OneDrive shared libraries. I love using this app, but all the pdfs I need are increasingly on shared libraries in OneDrive. iAnnotate can access OneDrive, but not the shared libraries. It may force me to leave this app after many years which is sad.

Great App but want some new features. Absolutely love this app as a PDF reader. The annotation tools are great too. But I hope there can be a dark reading mode and maybe a yellow background mode. To match the system’s dark mode and result in a better reading experience in the dark environment. Otherwise it is pretty good.

Poor interface. Really bad interface, not intuitive and it selects my text every 3rd letter. Would like my money back.

Be prepared to lose annotations. The automatic and manual saving functions to Google Drive are buggy, at times causing annotations you have been working on to not be saved. Other times, it saves two files with same name on same folder. Randomly, after returning to app, you are surprised with the app having closed all your opened tabs, which may include documents you have annotated while offline - you lose all annotations!! Really unproductive!!! Using "underline" on documents taller than A4 is buggy. The underline thickness is proportional to the page height. Some of my tall documents' underlines cover the whole words! I am supposed to be able to work with offline documents, but where and how?! The developers should get ideas from Foxit PDF, which allows highlighting overlapping, which allows combining colours - highlights are blended together.

Not as well designed as other apps. It feels constrained in the way you interact with the pages and the tools. For instance, why can't I shrink the page so that it is not covered by available tools? Also, I have a PDF file with multiple size pages that this app struggles to display properly. I paid good money for this app and then spent the same amount again for another app that works brilliantly and is a joy to use. The other app is so good that it has taken the edge off buying this one.

Improvements. This is a vast improvement. It syncs more easily with cloud computing (eg. Dropbox) and allows markups to be saved easily.

Was a really good app for years. Not anymore.. I used iannotate for years. I've just deleted and installed a different pdf reader. Two reasons. One is the new interface, with pdfs not being saved locally by default, is clunky. More importantly, I found it almost impossible to search for annotations in the pane on the left without accidentally deleting them. The slightest touch tends to wipe one away. Pity: it was a good app.

One major flaw for me. You can’t seem to move the tabs to the left of the screen. I have been using the earlier version for years and it is great. The new version has some great features lacking in the last version, but, you can’t place the tool bar on the left in the new version. Why? I’m right handed like a few other people so I’m guessing I’m not the only one who will be frustrated trying to annotate with the tab open under my hand. With the tabs on the left my hand wouldn’t be drawn across the screen.

A great app but what support?. I have used iAnnotate for years, I’d be lost without it however just lately it refuses to air print. I have a workaround, I send the pdf file over to the files app and print from there. IAnnotate finds the printer and then it looks as if everything is ok, I print the file but nothing happens, no errors and no print out. As I can print from other apps I have to assume the fault is in iAnnotate. I hope it’s fixed in the next update and soon. I still give iAnnotate 5 stars as it’s a brilliant app. Update: The print issue remains, an unsupported app is a poor offering and there has been ample time to fix this issue. As it stands the app deserves only 2 ⭐️s.

Absolutely AMAZING. As a uni student whom uses an iPad for note taking this is a very strong rival to OneNote. Especially for note taking on lecture slides, can be a little tricky getting the hang of how everything works, but once you get it, working becomes smooth and effortless. Definitely worth the $15. Recommendations, would be for a top ribbon as well as the side ribbon for saving, opening and document info (similar to MS Office) just so the saving, moving, formatting of the document can be done more easily. Regardless, I love the app, and have been using it daily. Especially the email annotated PDF tool, excellent. I do recommend the app to my friends, and now my lecturer for finance uses this app too!

Woeful. It seems this app has decayed to the point that it simply is a waste of money.

New app does not overwrite the old one. Ok just wrote a review - about local files not saving - to find the old app is still there with my old files. So much happier. How do I transfer my local files to the new app without downloading them again?????

Terrible scrolling when using the pencil. Pencil support is still infuriating. Sure, you can pan and scroll while using the pencil to write, highlight, etc, but you must use two fingers. It's tedious and error prone - some of the time the two fingers don't recognise, and the whole page gets highlighted. Branchfire, take a look at OneNote to see how it should be done. It is a shame, since the customisable toolbar is great. In the meantime, it is unusable for me.

Great tool. This app has become essential part of my work life. I have had it since I got my iPad and it has continued to improve. Everyone needs it.

No loyalty. Great app but is there any way that previous version owners could get a discount on the update? Bit annoying to pay full price again

Stick with iAnnotate Pdf. Afraid V4 just didn't work anywhere near as good as iAnnotate, I persisted for a while but should have stuck with the original.

Just gets better and better. Improvements in the new version are fantastic. Love the automatic recognition of the Apple Pencil. Definitely worth the price.

Almost perfect. Since I use the app for science papers annotation on iPad pro, I find its reliability and features most helpful. The only things that disrupts the flow of reading and marking the text, are the use of the apple pencil and the menu position. There should be an option to change the option Apple pencil allways inks to, for example, to a highliter. Also, after selecting or highlighting the text the menu to change color and finish highlighting is on top right corner, which really should be a pop-up menu (E.g. Onedrive, Acrobat Reader, Liquidtext or Endnote apps) at the highlighted location with options to change color, type, or just copy. Moreover, to stop current highliting you also have to go to the top right corner or longtouch the screen and choosing done, which for example could be easily done by just a double tap or a fingertouch if the pencil is used. These things are the major and only annoyances that I have found, and changing this will stop the distractions in flow. Current rating 4.5 stars!

Search function not working. Excellent app, I’ve had it for a few years and love it. But in the last few days the search function has stopped working. I have tried it on files that I regularly use, but there’s no response now. I see that there has been an update in the last week, supposedly fixing the search function. I did not have a problem with this before, but now I do. My app is upto date.

Very good!. Very handy for minimising paper and doing all annotations of documents on my iPad. Great!

Box doesn’t work, paid for nothing. “There seems to be a problem with this app” error

Sucked me in. Been a user for years so I, AGAIN, paid for the new version. No way to sync old folders and files from previous version. But hey, that's no problem because all my folders and files disappeared out of the OLD version when it had a recent "upgrade". The old version now contains a user guide to this new version 4. Their response? Oops, these things sometimes happen. You could try to restore your iPad from backup. Sometimes that helps. Really?? So my money was wasted with Branchfire for the last time.

Lack of offline capability a big step backwards. In iannotate prior to ver 4, folders in Dropbox could be marked for offline access within iannotate. This was a great feature that I used a lot while travelling. It has gone in ver. 4, so files cannot be opened or even seen in the library unless online at the time. This is an example of removing a great feature for no good reason I can see. Please reinstate it so the application once again becomes useful to those of us without permanent internet access.

Do not upgrade to IAnnotate 4. Cons to upgrade - offline editing not possible - does not allow amendments to files previously edited in old version of IAnnotate to be saved Pros to upgrade: - can connect to work onedrive account Think carefully before spending $15 AUD.

Application not working. The application is not working. Very annoying. It closes automatically after I open it. I'd did work for half a day after installation as I were transferring all my PDF's from the iAnnotate PDF application. Hope they fix it soon.

Why annotations spontaneously deleted?. App was really great, but last few times I used it, after I saved and re-opened, all my annotations were gone. Has happened a few times, and resulted in hours of work lost. Really need this fixed, otherwise is not useable and cannot trust it for pdf annotations.

Great app but icloud based saving seems to have broken down. This is one of my indispensable ‘multiple times a day’ apps, but recently the backup to icloud has ground down to a substandard level. Saving and opening folders is very slow and it randomly saves multiple versions of a document (slowing it down more). The support desk hasn’t been able to provide solutions.

Unintuitive.... This app is hard to use. Simple things like opening a file from cloud servers (OneDrive) just doesn't work. Gave up after several tries. Needs a lot of work before it is useful.

Awesome for iPad Pro. Just upgraded to version 4 and find it amazing with the iPad Pro + Apple Pencil. It automatically detects the Apple Pencil. A swipe of the finger scrolls through the docs and zooms etc as you would expect, but as soon as the pencil touches it screen it starts annotating. For signing and making annotations etc it is awesome. Seamless access to Dropbox. Super easy to use. Nice work guys, I see a few negative reviews, but for how I work it is perfect.

Eraser. The app is great. But you cannot erase something you’ve drawn/annotated. The eraser only works for immediate annotations. Either this or it erases all annotations on the page. That’s a bit of a stubborn/clumsy eraser. Erasers are important. Please fix it so it works like a real eraser. DA.

Annoying. Useful.

Excellent, but one request from a left handed person. Excellent app. One request: it would great to be able to switch the ribbons from one side of the screen to the other. This would help left handed people. For example, when highlighting I need to tap the ribbon on the right side of the screen to start highlighting and then tap the ribbon at the top right to stop (or do a long tap on screen). This means as a left handed person I need to reach across screen. Would be great if I could do all of this on the left hand side of the screen! Thanks kindly

Awful...just terrible -DO NOT BUY. Not only did I have to double dip even though I already owned version 3 but I can't even import files from local storage! Huge downgrade. They need to seriously fix this app or refund us!

Great for doing science. Love using iAnnotate with paperPile/gDrive to manage and read my literature.

Excellent and Easy. I am a lawyer and need to review and organize a lot of documents. IAnnotate is very simple to use and a pleasure to work with.

Reliable but awkward file management. I liked iAnnotate v3 but I stopped using it and switched to GoodReader when v3 started crashing way too often. I've now given v4 a try. It seems to be stable again. Compared to GoodReader, it does a much better job at displaying problematic PDF pages. GoodReader may render them after a really long wait time but has to re-compute the page each time it is shown again. iAnnotate v4 shows a blurry version of the page pretty quickly and will cache the detailed version once it has computed it. On the negative side, iAnnotate v4 has become a mess when it comes to file management. iAnnotate v3 (and GoodReader) did (do) a much better job. 1) A file in cloud storage needs to be downloaded each time it is opened. Really the file should be cached locally once it has been downloaded the first time and then downloaded again only if there's been a change to the remote version. 2) The file is re-downloaded when opening it even if it has been explicitly downloaded for offline storage. 3) There's no way to tell whether a file has been downloaded for offline storage. The thumbnails looks the same for either case. So if I lose Internet access, I don't know which files I will be able to work on. To be on the safe side, I need to download all files in a folder again and again for offline storage just in case I forgot to download one of them. 3) It is not possible to duplicate tabs any more. Being able to see the same document in multiple tabs is a crucial feature for me (and GoodReader seems to be the only other app that supports this feature). In iAnnotate v4 I need to open a copy of the document in a second tab. But since it's a copy, the edits that I make in the first tab won't show up in the second tab, which is not what I want. In summary, GoodReader is still the better tool unless you often need to deal with PDFs that have problematic pages in them.

Dont buy this. People with the previous version, DO NOT BUY THIS IT'S THE EXACT SAME BUT WORSE. take my word. Why in the hell did i pay for this???

Simple and useful. If you truly want to go paper-free, the's is the app you need!

Great app. This is the best app to annotate pdf documents. The tool menu is very complete and exportation tools work great.

Palm rejection lacking. Overall, this is a decent app for annotating, but highlighting is a challenge. The main thing I want to be able to do is highlight with the Apple Pencil and scroll the document with the other hand, but the app can’t differentiate between them so you end up having to constantly switch highlighting on and off which is annoying. I’ll have to request a refund, unfortunately.

An Invitation to Data Loss!. Although the original version allowed password protection of the app and all its data, the makers of the app removed that feature in this version. They got a few complaints from bozos who forgot their passwords. Instead of telling people that the idea of a password is for no one but the owner of the data from accessing it and there are password managers out there, they threw away security. So, it's a nice app for information that has no real value - that is, info you don't mind just anyone having access to! For important info, use PDF PRO similar apps. A real shame - this app has some nice features.

No copy paste?. Some genius thought the app would be better without the ability to highlight text and copy or paste it? Please hire smarter devs

Quite likely the best iPad, iPhone app for PDF. I've been using iAnnotate since the first version. Current version is simply put... Awesome. Some might find it too powerful or too complicated however, take a little extra time to learn the tools then create toolbars with only what you want to use. The ability to work offline and with access to Dropbox and Google Drive makes this app a must have for all business I do. Love that it seamlessly imports an image and automatically converts it to a PDF with all the mark up tools active.

Battery problems. Why can’t I recharge my IPad 10.2 after using this app.? The app works great but then I have to delete it and reset my iPad.

Great annotation app!. I use this app daily to annotate student work. It differs from other annotators in the way you can flatten a PDF. You can flatten it directly in the program without having to email it first.

It works, cool!. You can open excel and word files - as email attachments- and iAnnotate will convert them to PDF so you can annotate or sign them. Very easy to connect to your Dropbox account.

Love the concept but basic functionality is a problem. So, you make a mistake and go to erase it. If you have done anything by “pen” since, though, the erase button is greyed out and you can’t use it. Try typing. Say you type something in and want to revise. Nope. Backspace does not work and you just end up typing over what you had before. Big mess. All right, let’s say you say, OK. I will just delete the document from Iannotate and start again. Well there is no library tab, just the tab that brings you back to the same document with no obvious way of deleting or starting fresh. When I open the document on my computer, it comes up blank but I can’t reproduce that in iAnnotate. I am sure there are ways to make this app more frustrating, but I can’t come up with any of them now.

App continues to crash. I was happy with the features of this app, but after 24 hours of use it is now crashing each time I attempt to use it. I will be glad to change this review to reflect a fixed app once this issue has been resolved. Until then, I would not recommend spending a single penny on this software.

Once-amazing app, now too unreliable. TL;DR: Avoid. If you haven’t bought it, I can’t recommend buying this app anymore. Reviews you read on blogs, etc. are likely referring to old version and don’t apply to this version. ——— I used to use previous versions of the app every day. (Of all my apps on the Mac or in iOS, iAnnotate 3 was my 3rd most frequently used, other than Mail and a notes storage app). I really dislike this version. It took me ages to find where the app had stuffed PDF files imported from the web (in the messy main directory of Dropbox, dream on if you expect an option for a default storage location), but that’s a minor problem that just requires a little friction when you have to move your files. Here are some that are constant annoyances: If you just want to quickly see your annotations or the PDF’s thumbnails, the search function is what opens every time you open the left tray, and up pops the keyboard... which hides the buttons to get to the annotations, thumbnails, etc. Gone are the days you could just swipe right from the bezel and quickly get to your annotations. Now you have to get rid of the keyboard and then tap the teeny tiny icon at the bottom every time. WHY HIDE THE ICONS BEHIND WHERE THE KEYBOARD WILL POP UP?!? Talk about needless friction. (I wonder what PDF app the developers are using? Cause they definitely aren’t using this! There’s no way you could use it and not be irritated by all of the ways it adds extra friction.) Worse than all of the added friction surprises, though, is that you can’t rely on downloaded PDFs to be there when you expect them to be (like when you’re on a flight and realize that iAnnotate was just kidding about that whole “save for offline use” thing) and when you do manage to get something to save, you can’t tell those saved for offline use from the others in the list when you’re online, so you can’t realize that “Oh, that one’s not saved; I’m going to need it.” and act on that. And it’s completely unclear when your offline changes are safe and when they aren’t I’m constantly worried about losing work because the reliability is always in question (and other reviews indicate people are losing work fairly regularly). I only upgraded a week ago (I bought it ages ago, excited by the idea of a new iAnnotate version, realized the problems with offline use, and immediately went back to v3, but after having Dropbox problems with it recently, I decided to see if I could work around the v4 problems). I soon tried to go fleeing back, at top speed, to the old version 3, only to realize that it doesn’t comply with Dropbox’s recent changes so we’re stuck with v4. Ugh. Dislike it so much (and liked the other version so much) that I considered just dropping Dropbox so I could use the app I absolutely adored. (Seriously, people rolled their eyes at me for talking so much about how good it was... I sent emails about it...) I might still just give up Dropbox as frustration mounts with this version’s poor usability. But if this is the way of the future for iAnnotate, maybe it’s just time to just switch to another app. I certainly can’t imagine I’ll ever pay for a v5 instead of jumping to another app when the time for a non-optional switch comes again.

Crashes. New version just crashes on opening

Great app but.... I bought this app for work and school which require a lot of pdf annotation. I love the fact that its not a monthly subscription. The files are easy to access and its user-friendly. However, it would be very helpful if there is also an eraser option. I mean.... I have never met someone who has never used an eraser before. I see that some people in the review also comment about it too... But overall, its a great app!

Works pretty well!. I just downloaded it 2 days ago and have already used it to proof over 150 pages. The one issue I had was easily solved by Support. I just didn't realize I had already had saved the document locally. I received a response from Support within 2 hours. Pretty good all around. Would give it a 5 but I would have liked a quick overview when I opened the app. I didn't know where to start.

The best. Simples the best.. It works well, it is one payment only. I would Neves, ever subscribe for apps or software anyway. It has the main features to edit, write and save the PDFs, and more. As a suggestion, for future releases, I would remove one of the highlight markers, and replace for another pen. So, we would have 2 different pens and a couple of markers. Great work. Congrats on the great app. Don't change too much in the future. It is great the way it is. Thanks

Broken on new iPad Pro. Cuts off top bar whenever I switch between apps.

Out of focus. I have been using the app for over a year, with much success. However in the past few weeks the text in the new files I transfer to the app is fuzzy, out of focus. Not the clear text I used to get.

Problems when flying.... It requires WiFi all the time when you deal with sync pdfs in Dropbox. You need to download them and keep them open. Also... pray that the app does not crash when on airplane mode. Otherwise, you will not be able to work in any of the files during the remaining part of the flight. Absolutely great when you have WiFi.

Not worth. I want my money back the thing keeps crashing... it's not worth the money

Stable, effective. Long time user of version 3, this update is stable with some good enhancements. I had read some earlier reviews that made me nervous. But I have had no trouble in daily use over the last 3 months. I kept iAnnotate 3 and for a while used both. But I like version 4's cleaner interface and document handling

Bad. Can't unlink google drive. Boutons are unclickable. Very bad.

Best annotation app I have tested yet!. Easy to use. Efficient.

Keeps crashing recently!. This was a great app and I’ve been using it for years now …but recently crashes every time I use search:(

Bad Compatibility with OCR and Highlighting Problem. Update: The developers unfortunately misread my comments. In the single-page mode, one cannot consistently retain the highlight option like one could in the previous app. Every time you change the page, you have to disable highlighter mode, and then enable it again, which makes it quite distracting when reading a long document. It would help simply if single-page mode could also switch pages with two fingers. More importantly, the app always overlays an OCR’d text on top of the original document image of the text. This means that the whole text ends up becoming blurry and unreadable, because the image and the recognized text ends up getting mixed up. Right now, the only PDF app on the App Store that doesn’t have this problem is Acrobat, which I would certainly rather not use if iAnnotate would fix these glitches. Please fix these problems. Old post: This is why I'm still using the older app. This one does not have this functionality, where you can move through pages while continuing to seamlessly highlight. Here, I need to click on the highlight button every time to do so, which is distracting.

Pencil issues. Doesn’t automatically detect pressure when writing with apple pencil, so can’t write naturally on it. Also, does not have “undo” and “redo” buttons available for between different types of annotations (in Notability, every stroke can be undone. In this application, only within a specific type of annotation can things be undone, like inside highlighting or inside pencil writing). These were major turn offs for me. I am seeking a refund.

Best PDF apps. This apps worth it. I use iAnnotate for severals years

New and improved? Doesn't feel like it!. I upgraded to iAnnotate thinking I would get a better version of the App, which has been a godsend for me as I read PDF articles and take notes. Yet, I find this version has hampered rather than helped me. I find it harder to navigate iAnnotate when offline: it's difficult to access and save downloaded PDFs and it often saves multiple versions of a PDF without consolidating the changes. Large PDFs are more difficult to navigate with iAnnotate mistaking note taking for page turning. Sometimes I go back to my old version for the comfort in knowing that my PDF notes will be saved safely. Please iAnnotate: don't fix what wasn't broken and ensure your updates keep what originally worked intact.

All-in-one. Thou still exploring the functionalities offered by this app I feel like - this is it! You could not only make annotations but also edit the pages however you like incl. removing pages and merging PDF files.

Really Great Value. I purchased this app to study with. Love the flexibility of tools, ability to merge, and the one time purchase (as opposed to subscription). Thank you for making this amazing app available at a great price point. The only thing I would love to add is the ability to snip from one document and paste to another within the program. So instead of merging a whole page into my notes I could just add a piece of a page. Otherwise does everything I need! Highly recommend for reading and marking up PDF files!

Nice pdf reader but.... This pdf reader lacks from features such as fast access to favourite documents, change the tool for the pencil easily (e.g. Ink to highlight), and pencil recognition when highlighting (I still want to use my finger for scrolling through the document)

Poor poor support. You'd think that the developers would release an immediate patch to the problem of not being able to open new documents in iAnnotate. This app went from being my most valuable to being useless!

Iannotate. A very frustrating app to use A Minimal help file A simple thing like getting to folders frustrates one Many other programs are better

Awesome. A great feature is that it saves the annotated document right back where it was originally saved. Add an eraser button. I know there is delete but an eraser button would be helpful. Also add more business-related stamps like; Copy Paid Reconciled Emailed

I pad. Un excellent gestionnaire de dossier pdf. Je gère tout mes dossiers pdf au Nunavut avec ma tablette. Quelle évolution !

Best iPad app for academics. I use this to review journal articles, papers, student assignments and other University documents. It's even better than old fashioned paper. It even allows a page marker, so you can easily return to your spot after looking up the references at the end of a paper.

Cuts off top tab bar on the new IPad Pro. Is there an update on the way for this issue?

why did you mess it up?. This WAS a great app... now it keeps crashing and everything I coud do quickly is long and complicated.

Major Crash twice a year. Dec 8, 2023 No improvement in the last 17 months. This is disgusting. July 20, 2022 This app continues to crash. I have not been able to add documents. And worse I can’t get access to any of my files I saved. I can only hope iAnnotate will up date this app to fix this major issue asap. I have not been able to access any of my files for two months. When it works it’s a great app. But it is very un reliable. Twice a year the app degenerates to a point where I have to delete the app from my iPad and reinstall it. All my files (3.5GB) are available, but I have to open each file to make it available when when I’m away from home and WiFi. This takes at least 16 hours. The degeneration happens in two steps, first It does not allow me to download a new PDF document. Then two weeks later I can’t even open the app. This has been going on for years. I love the app when it’s working, but I’s fustratating to experience “The Major Crash” twice a year that takes 16 hours to fix. John F It has happened again (April 21, 2019) I also back up on the OneDrive app where I have over 5GB of data stored with no problems. I have been keeping the amounts of files on iAnnotate as low as possible, But it’s crashed again with 1.27 GBs of files, and as usual it’s at the most inconvenient time. I like iAnnotate for the highlighting feature, but apart from that the reliability is god awful. John F

Latest Update Unstable. Use of search feature now crashes program almost every time and the inability to pin annotations in a side bar makes tracking changes across drafts almost impossible. One is a bug the other is a very unhelpful feature change.

Long time users. Would like to see certain features added.. I use the application extensively. Main criticism is the wrist-guard approach when using a stylus. It would be nice to suppress drawing with anything but the stylus when a tool is active, so fingers can be used to navigate and not mistakenly annotating the document when signing etc. from wrist placement.

Easy to use. Easy to use and practical tool for my basic school readings and annotations.

Version4 still not reliable. When it works it’s great. When it doesn’t, you feel like thrashing your iPad. OneDrive shows an updated file created with the iPad at work. The iPad at home cannot show the updated file. Not good!

Excellent Application. I use IAnnotate since many years. It has constantly been improved and it is better than all others. I like that one can easily look at several files easily. Annotations of course are excellent. Works well with Dropbox.

Good, could use more accessible organization options.. Overall a very useful app. Could use a better organizational structure for accessing files. Also, writing but then not being able to erase parts of writing, but having to erase all of what I have written after changing tools is less efficient when I’m switching tools a lot and trying to annotate a lecture.

I went paperless because of this app!. Without this app my business could not go paperless. It’s allowed me be more competitive by cutting costs (no printing =no paper costs, no printer maintenance and no ink)! It also helps the environment by reducing how many trees are cut down and using less products associated with printing. Thank you IAnnotate!

Not functional if annotations won't sync after leaving/returning to wifi. When leaving my house with my iPad, or my home wifi randomly going out, upon getting wifi back on, my annotations will not sync outside of iAnnotate (such as iPad Files, Dropbox, etc) This is extremely frustrating as I have pages of annotations that are seemingly useless as I can't sent them outside of the app. This app is not functional or useful to me without the syncing feature upon returning to wifi. Waste of money and all progress lost.

iAnnotate not the same. I had been using iAnnotate since when first come out, when a new version was made available, I decided to keep the old version for my private documents and the new version for my studies, I was very please with this system, I could search and add to both App according to my needs, just recently got the iPad Pro, and I had to transfer all my Apps and subsequent documents, while doing so the old version of iAnnotate, disappeared including all my documents, in both of my iPads, I have try to find the old App on the App Store to no avail. Is there any thing I can do to find and re-set all of the info I lost as well as getting back the original iAnnotate App?

Years of work. I’ve been using this app since my BA, and I can honestly say it has made my life easier. It’s has helped me to develop short works, long works (like my thesis), read simple things for my own enjoyment and, finally, organize myself and spaces. I am really grateful for it and I suggest it to anyone I can. The price is completely fair, it is an investment worth of doing on the long run.

Great note taking/annotating app!. Using this app on my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and a wireless keyboard. Works great! There are options for everything I can think of for note-taking. Regarding the pencil specific features, it uses palm detection or whatever really well! Eraser double tap function does not work however in this app for the Apple Pencil 2nd gen. But overall, I am enjoying my notetaking experience with this app, very much!

Old version logged into OneDrive for Business. My old version connected to my OneDrive for Business using Microsoft ADFS (active directory federation services) and this was very convenient. I was prompted to download the new version and pay $9.99 so I did, now it won’t connect to my OneDrive for Business. I submitted a ticket a few hours ago and have not even had an acknowledgement that I had submitted a ticket. I have faith that this problem will be fixed eventually, but I have to go back to the old version if I want to use iAnnotate.

My daily Go To App. I love this app. Use it daily for everything from signing documents to marking up proofs. A few minor items on my wish list: 1) Allow combining PDF’s into one document. 2) Ability to group annotations, and copy or align text. But overall great app with continual updates.

Unreliable and annotations disappear.. On at least five occasions, I've been contacted by clients asking why there weren't any annotations past a certain point, and I've had to go back and completely redo the job, costing me time, money, and embarrassment. Autosave is on, and I save it myself every few pages to Google Drive, yet the annotations disappear. While I'm looking at other more reliable annotation apps, I'm downloading my transcripts to my tablet every 20 pages so I don't lose everything. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I am FAR from the only person this has happened to. I emailed the developer, but no response.

Buggy. Amongst multiple problems, one of the most annoying is that documents don't import on the first attempt. Usually multiple attempts are necessary. Please keep updating if you would like good reviews. Original iAnnotate for iPad was great, but had no iPhone equivalent. Now there is this, which at the moment is not worth the $5 I paid unless these issues are worked out. Update: I have lost all my pdfs, edits and data with the last two updates. This has ended up being a big problem for me.

No way to set it as Apple Pencil draw only. One of my biggest pet peeves when using this app is that I cannot scroll with one finger while I an annotating with the Apple Pencil. While using the pencil or pen tools, I cannot scroll down a document without having to remember to use two fingers and it gets extremely annoying. Please make this a setting.

Pretty good. I’ve been using this app for several years to annotate the audiobooks I narrate. It generally works well but pretty regularly crashes and closes. I do notice too after a few hours of recording the text that is highlighted suddenly disappears and I have to shut down and reopen my iPad and then it works again.

Really Want to Love This App. Years later, updating my review, and I still lament the fact that this is one of the only pdf reader/annotaters! I’ll spare detail of the many minor bugs to allow focus on one: how after this much time is iAnnotate totally unable to sync between my devices?? Routinely and randomly telling me I don’t have a connection (no matter the device or local network configuration) when every other app is having no trouble connecting to the internet of which my device is very much connected. Syncing and cloud save are CORE features of this app. I am so done with it

Disappointed. I had iAnnotate years ago & had to change because it no longer could work with upgrades. I really liked it and was disappointed to lose it. When I saw they had fixed it I had high hopes. I’m so sorry I bought it. Now I have paid twice for something I can’t use. So sad we can’t ‘return’ defective programs like you can with items. Yes you can merge and delete pages but only one page at time. Very time consuming, especially if merging a few pages. Yes you can use side by side with another program but you can only see part of the page & it won’t scroll over to the other half. Yes you can change colors & pens but everything is so slow. You can only have one typewriter choice on the tool bar. It will crash if you try and add it. This is a great disappointment so I guess I will go back to my pdf reader though I really wanted to make this work. The reader is not my favorite lay out but at least it does what it’s ask to do.

Search function not properly working. I’ve used this app for a few years now with very little problems. I got this latest update, though, and now my search function is sometimes not working. Sometimes it will, but sometimes when I go to search it returns no results even for single letters searched for. Is there a remedy for this issue?

Arrow keys won’t work since new update. Since the most recent update (which appears to be 3 months ago— thanks for not keeping things current) the arrow keys cannot be used to move the cursor around in the text boxes. SUPER FRUSTRATING!! I sit there and fight with that dang cursor to get it where I want it!! FIX IT!! I’m not sure why this issue is “known” but nothing has been done about it? No one cares whether or not you can use the arrow keys to scroll through the document... it is most likely being used on something with a touch screen. Thus, that function is pointless.

Oddly inflexible.. First I want to congratulate customer support, Which was very prompt and speedy. Unfortunately the substance of my concern could not be fixed. When you use the app in an iPad, and annotate a document with an Apple Pencil, you cannot amend your comments. You can delete a whole block of comments and redo them, but there is no way to erase or change one or two words. This means the app is not really suitable for commenting on papers, for example, unless you are absolutely sure that you will remain satisfied with every word you write. Disappointing.

Off to a good start. So far it has been easy to mark up my books and take notes as needed. Like that it integrates easily with my OneDrive account. And I can open it on my desktop with Acrobat and see my notes and highlights. The one thing it doesn’t seem to do and that would be nice is that it remember where I left off reading.

Best pdf reader, but has lack of Apple Pencil abilities. Actually iAnnotate is the most powerful and easy to use PDF viewer app on iOS, with nice annotating features in hand. But it’s not suitable to use with Apple Pencil. The “Pencil Always ink” is a nice feature but its not enough, switching between tools or a slider to easy and fast select of pencil tools will be nice. Unfortunately iAnnotate doesn’t even support “double tap to eraser” on the Apple Pencil :(

It’s clunky. It works but it really difficult to get a drawing to work. It’s like programming in assembler. Everything takes multiple steps and if you make a mistake you have to delete everything and start over. I purchased this app because I couldn’t find anything I liked but unless you are willing to pay a monthly subscription this seems to be all you get.

I depend on this app!. I use this app every day day on my iPad mini for work. The learning curve was a little steep but now it's great to use. The support team is very responsive and patient. I'd give it five stars except it seems like it acts glitchy for no reason every couple of weeks. That's frustrating, but overall I'm very happy with it.

Improvements. I’m using this to mark up revisions on construction drawings, and it works well fo that on my iPad. A copy function for quickly repeating corrections would be great.....the stamp is an awkward and time consuming tool to use. Also, an option to keep some of the tools, the arrow tool for example, selected, would save many steps....right now it reverts to the pencil tool after drawing one arrow, or line, or circle.

Not so user-friendly. I was using the app in class for teaching but it is so frustrating. The main issue is that when you write something, and want to add to it, the app thinks you want to select the previous writing and auto selects to whole previous writing. If you do this fast, and don’t realize the writing is selected, you may accidentally move the selected writing. Doing this in class in from of 100+ students over and over becomes frustrating and the whole lecture get interrupted again and again trying to fix the moved writing. A better solution? Notability! Smooth and flawless.

Tempting as the devil himself, but .... I love this app’s promise. Lots of highly customizable features, can run two windows side by side, etc. Problem for me is that twice now I have had the app crash while I was in the middle of a big project. Although I had been saving repeatedly - indeed, even closing and saving individual PDFs as I finished working on them - I lost three or four hours’ work in both crashes. I can’t afford to lose that much time and work, so,I will, with regret, uninstall this app so I am not tempted to use it again. Pity.

Like it a lot, but.... Overall I’m really happy with the app , but it loses a star because of one ongoing glitch: it often displays text in a slightly different spot from where it thinks the text is. What I mean by that is that often when I go to (for instance) underline a word, it actually places the underline through the word instead of under it - this happens frequently and with all the tools I’ve tried (highlighting, strike through, etc.). Not a huge deal, but pretty annoying.

Full Function pdf Editor. Having tried Books, Acrobat and others, none match the utility of this app. Links to my various clouds and just does everything I need well at a non-subscription, value price. Best in class IMO.

Good so far. I was somewhat concerned with the lack of really positive reviews for the most recent version of this app, but you know, it's just fine. I am particularly happy that I can multitask with the newest version. Have not experienced any crashes, and I appreciate that the Apple pencil automatically inks. Great app!

IAnnotate4 is back my favorite!. I recently had a problem about my documents turning blurry, practically and unreadable, due to an error of my part, using too much open document. Now that I get your helpful feedback, IAnnotate 4 is back my daily tool for thé reading, annotation and of organization of my PDFs.

MUCH worse than iannotate 3. This was the worst app update I’ve ever experienced. I was forced to update, following Branchfire’s equally terrible decision to stop supporting Dropbox connections in iannotate 3. Having to work online takes away 99% of the benefit of the app, document zoom no longer works with ease, annotations can’t be moved with the pencil... it’s also a generally clunkier experience. I am ridiculously disappointed that I paid $10 for a downgrade, rather than an update. You owe it to people who loved and supported the first app to give them better and correct the bad decisions. This is awful.

Suggestions to tweak on the Eraser tool.. When using this tool it asks are you sure about “erasing” all “Annotations on this specific page”. When I chose this option, it “also deleted my sound clip I created as well as the Note I had created!” These two items are NOT Annotations of the page, they are in fact a (NOte & a Sound Clip). It would be cool of you to make this tweak please on the Erase function for a single page Tool. Thanks for a cool Product and it’s improvements!

No easy way to erase. So I deleted my original review because the nickname made this app sound worse than it is. For all it’s good features, before you buy it, there is no easy way to erase. No eraser tool. The developers provided some not so great workaround suggestions and were very friendly and said they’re looking into a way to make erasing easier, but know that as of this review, there is no eraser tool like there is on most similar apps.

Suggestion. Maybe I’m not using it correctly, but it would be nice if my comment could encompass a group of text. Now I have to highlight and then add a comment, which shows up as two separate things when I export it. I’d like the comment to be along with the part I highlighted, if possible.

Hate the upgrade. The pop up menu replacing the navigation in the left menu is a horrible change. I used the app to annotate records in court proceedings, which have lengthy indexes to the pleadings that are file in a date ordered menu that was on the left simultaneously with the existing document open. Please go back to the former method, or make the choices available through a settings menu. Very disappointed with the change and will be using an older version and not this until this is sorted.

Generally good; pagination issues. Long time user on a 10” iPad Pro and have found it to be the only reliable annotation app, so I’ve generally been pretty happy with it. However, I just upgraded to an iPad Pro 12” (3rd gen) and there are major pagination issues. The app doesn’t fit the frame sometimes, won’t display correctly when going from portrait to landscape, there are issues when zooming in and out of documents (it gets “stuck” sometimes). Closing the app and restarting usually fixes it.

Fine app with rooms for improvement. I like the stylish look of the app and the basic functions of it. However, for someone who enjoys highlighting with favorite colors and customize notes, it lacks the ability to be creative. It is amazing to have an expanded color palette, but what’s good if you can’t create their own favorite set? Or am I missing some setting tools to set my own color palette? Also, I think it will be super useful if there’s a dictionary linked to the app. It’s a pain to google definitions and copy and paste to notes.

I’ve been waiting too long. Time to look elsewhere.. I’m leaving my old, 4-star review below to show that I used to be a huge fan. But it has been over a year and they haven’t resolved the connectivity issue that I, and plenty of others, have been complaining about. I can’t take it any longer. Good bye. It was nice until v.4. * * * I'm excited to see a new version of this app. It means the app is not being abandoned. It's been my favorite app since it came out on the original iPad, so I don't mind paying for a new version. If you look, you'll see that there are lots of new features - especially for my iPad Pro. But one important feature has been removed: local syncing with Dropbox, etc. You can only access files when online. That seriously interferes with my workflow, and I hope they restore that functionality. Do that, and they get five stars! And list view is still there. It's just not the default (and not easy to find - I stumbled on it accidentally).

Be aware, Really horrible, much worse than the original one. I bought the old iAnnotation for $10 or $20 years ago ant it has been working great. A few months ago, I couldn’t connect with Dropbox any more, so I was forced to purchase this APP for $10. However, I cannot automatically update or syn my files with Dropbox any more and have to manually check every new pdf file and download. I paid extra money for a much worse version and l was forced to. I wished I didn’t purchase the first version and got hooked. Who knows when the developer wants to get more money from me next time to force me upgrade to an even worse version. I am furious.

my go to PDF markup app. This app lets me do everything I used to do to on paper to digest articles and conference programs and even take notes on agendas at board meetings. But it has the advantage of saving the original unmarked version and of me being able to carry with me 100s of articles and notes in one lightweight iPad. For Conference Programs: best feature is the list of highlights I can bring up on the left. for navigating conferences, this is the fastest way to choose and remember presentations i want to see For signing documents: super easy to import, sign by hand and send For annotating readings and marking up other's rough drafts: in addition to highlighting key ideas, and typing comments, I find it essential to write in the margins and circle trouble spots.

I use this constantly. I often have occasion to mark up PDFs. I had been using Adobe Acrobat on my laptop, but I find it a bit cumbersome for making editorial marks. This app has permitted me to adapt the paper-based workflow (in-line symbol and marginal mark) to a digital format and produce a marked-up file that the recipient can use in Acrobat. It’s made my work more accurate, efficient, and portable. Two suggestions for future features: -The ability to jump immediately to a particular page (helpful with long documents, where scrolling for a hundred pages is a bit of a pain) -The ability to create or important custom stamps (e.g., proofreader's marks) UPDATE: Developer has pointed out these features already exist; can I give iAnnotate six stars now?

Improvements and not so much. I love this program, but the latest edition has a functionality change that significantly degrades it utility. Losing the ability to flatten and email from within a file significantly adds to my workflow. Please change that back.

So many limitations. You can only highlight a document if you have a PDF that has selectable text. Other annotation apps allow you to do both. Converting non-pdf documents to PDF requires an internet connection making it difficult to use the app's full functionality while traveling. You can use the app offline if you make your cloud-based documents available offline. However, your notes cannot be saved. Other apps allow temporary saving to your device and then update your documents when you can connect to the internet again. Overall, needs many improvements.

Please Fix!. Way too many glitches for way too many years. The os and tools have major, consistent issues. A stylus tap will suddenly expand the text beyond readability, the straight lines shoot out like lightning bolts over the whole page, the highlighter doubles and widens, the underline dominos down the page, the tool borders (blue control dots) don’t respond, and the app, more than any other I use, shuts down. I’ve reached out to client services twice, and they’ve no suggestions. Yet, I stay. 🧐

Essential business tool. As a self-employed proofreader, I cannot imagine completing the thousands of pages I read monthly without iAnnotate. This app allows my business to be portable, which increases my efficiency. I can also connect the app to Dropbox and Google Drive, whatever my clients prefer. The latest version has increased tool functionality as well. iAnnotate, for me, is essential to my business.

Do not miss on unleashing the power of your Apple Pro. I really find this a better solution for me taking note on what I read from business review than going and writing on a piece of paper or on a separate note It help me keep easy reference to my note and material read and facilitate my next review and reference This has moved me from paper to gadget usage

So helpful. I screwed up and almost deleted all my wife’s doctoral study material off of IAnnotate. I needed assistance badly. I contacted IAnnotate support and they went out of there way to solve my problem and get me out of hot water. My wife has used this app through all of school and loves it so highly recommend.

Great App but a little buggy. I've loved this app from the very beginning, but have started noticing that it crashes repeatedly when I'm working with zooming in and out to add annotations to PDF documents. I hope there's a solution coming fast because it's really frustrating to have to reopen the app and get going again when it crashes. Other than that, I love it so far. Would recommend.

This app would be 5 stars if it had 3 other features.... I like this app it works well and gets the job done, but there are three main things I would like to see done with this app in future updates. Firstly, it need support for dark mode. Secondly, it needs better integration with the files app. Lastly, it needs the ability to edit PDF text and images. Although I would love to see these features I am still more than happy to use this app.

Overall very happy!!. There are a few minor things that prove troublesome but don’t impair its use. Navigating deep inside folders can be slow and cumbersome, if there were a list of favorites that’d be easier. Rarely I’ll encounter a crash or failure, but it’s really reliable and functional! We use iAnnotate for architectural drawings mostly and it’ll even handle the images we upload into files that are already quite large. Great product!

Like it but needs improvment. I like that one can work on multiple documents at once and the various tools for writings. However this app is extremely glitchy. My annotations disappear or they move up a page. Documents don’t saves. The highlight feature is very bad for non-roman characters. Good potential though. I would still choose Notability for a single document editor. Sorry!

Needs improvement.. Overall, this is a decent app. There are several bugs that STILL need to be worked out. I won’t waste the time listing them because I’ve already wasted the time doing that in an email which was obviously ignored. I’m aware I’m hardly the first person to have brought issues to their attention, and they’ve had well over a year to implement changes, yet the same issues persist. The app functions well enough to use it, but not well enough to praise it.
