Fantastic app!. The valet at our hotel asked what we were doing that day as he pulled up our car. When we mentioned we were driving the road to Hana, he recommended this app. It MADE our trip perfect. It felt like we had the most experienced tour guide in the world with us. In addition to being very detailed and explaining each site we were coming up to, it also made recommendations on when to stop and when to keep driving (“this waterfall is ok, but you will see much better in 30 minutes...recommend not stopping“), it was also smart and funny! If you drove past a scenic spot the app knew this because the timing of the GPS indicated we kept moving, so it would say “ok, so I guess you didn’t want to see that”. Kept us engaged for 6 or 8 hours as we drove along. At one point we stopped at an overlook after we just heard the story of a church built with coral and there was a tourist with their tour guide standing next to us, and he was stumbling for a good explanation about the church, so I just started to repeat all that I just heard on the app and the tourist asked how I knew all that, and I explained about the great app while the tour guide (who knew next to nothing and was really just an overpaid Uber driver) scowled at me! Anyway, GREAT app!

Fantastic, fun, and educational — just do it!. Could not have imagined a better experience driving the road to Hana. If you have read reviews talking about the danger of doing so yourself, ignore them. Because this was my first trip to Maui I don’t have anything to compare it with, but the number of cars on the road to Hana was not that many, and the drive was very doable. This may be because of lower tourism numbers due to Covid but we only saw 4 tourist vans all day taking groups on the road; taking a tour is definitely not necessary. This GPS guided, turn by turn guide was fantastic! I did download it to my phone as recommended (needed because you will not have cell service for a large part of the drive) and simply paused the tour each time we stopped at locations by sliding the tab on the bottom right. I learned a ton and loved the recommendations (ex: “this stop is nice but there are better waterfalls ahead so I would recommend skipping it”). It felt like we had our own personal experienced guide with us on the road. Definitely 5 star!! Would do again in a heartbeat.

Whole family enjoyed this. We had a few technical difficulties with this at first, I think more related to our rental car’s Bluetooth than the app, but we were able to play it thru a portable speaker that we brought for the beach. Once we got it going, it was great and really informative. The Shaka guide can be a bit cheesy now and then, yes, but the provided info is really interesting. There is simply no way we would have known what was coming up, how long until the next site, where restrooms were, etc. The linkage to your GPS is sooo nice since he can then give you a timely “heads up” for upcoming pullouts and turns. This is critical on this curvy little road. It was also really helpful to know how much time we had until we reached Hana and the “end of the road” up ahead. We stayed overnight in Hana and then did Oheo pools and Pipiwai trail early the next morning which I highly recommend to avoid the crowds. On the way back the guide gives a lot of interesting history of the islands that we really enjoyed. My whole family made me promise to write a review since they felt that our drive was so enhanced by this guide, so here you go! Mahalo!

This app made our trip GREAT!!. I've never paid for an app and was reluctant about driving the Road to Hana on our first trip to Maui. But after downloading the Classic version, yesterday's trip to Hana was the best part of the trip so far. We saw many things other people probably never knew about...the quick exploration of the lava cave was my son's favorite. And we drove right by other spots that probably weren't worth stopping at but we might have otherwise pulled in just because was saw a bunch of cars. Only regret was we didn't leave early enough to make it to the pools and I didn't have my phone charger so I was stressed I'd run out of battery life and miss part of the app tour. Luckily we made it to Hana and back with about 9% battery left (6+ hours). It was great getting updates about how much travel time to expect along the way. Seriously, it was like having a local in our car telling us exactly what to expect every twist and turn along the way. And even told us Hawaiian history stories on the way back home, making the drive back very enjoyable. Worth every penny and would rate 10 stars if I could. Great job!

Shaka Maui and Kauai app. We used these apps on our Maui/Kauai trip. We started with the Gypsy app and switched to the bundled Shaka Maui and Kauai apps. We liked the Shaka apps better. I felt Shaka had more detailed stops on the road to Hana. It also plays Hawaiian music and has Hawaiian legend stories mixed in. This was extremely helpful on the road to Hana and made the drive more interesting. Tip- book a room in Hana and continue your drive the next day. Do the pipiwai trail hike (4 miles total) and start this hike before 3:30pm and bring bug spray for the bamboo forest. My kids are mosquito magnets. This was an amazing moderate hike that ends with a huge waterfall. I looked at reviews for both apps before we left on vacation and found that both shaka and gypsy had very good reviews. My family of 4 preferred the Shaka app tours because they were more entertaining and detailed. I would use them again on a return trip. On our Kauai trip it had us stop at moloa’a bay which is the location Gillian’s Island was first filmed. It played the theme music as we drove in. How fun! Get the Shaka apps, you will love the tour help on where to stop. We like to explore and it gave us lots of options to do so. 🌸

Made the Road to Hana so easy!. I’m in Maui with my mom and brother. The concierge at our condo said that of we did the Road to Hana on our own, we’d probably see 3 things maximum on our trip before we’d have to turn around to get back before dark. We were considering booking a tour van for that reason, and then we found this app. It saved us $600 and the experience was wonderful! It worked offline- using GPS- so even once we lost cell service it continued working because we downloaded it beforehand. We saw 9 different places along the way, including the black sand beach and many waterfalls. And those 9 didn’t include all the bathroom pitstops and the other places we could have seen if we didn’t get a late start. The guide let us know when we might want to skip the stop if we needed to conserve time and it gave us time to discuss it before we’d have to turn. Anyway, such an awesome app! I’m so glad I found it! We were nervous because of how the concierge talked about how difficult finding the stops would be and how “crazy” the road is, but the reviews for this app reassured us and we are so glad we didn’t let her salesmanship get to us!

Absolutely worth it. Truly can’t say enough about how wonderful this app is. We had initially downloaded it for the Road to Hana tour, but also ended up listening to the Sunrise Haleakala tour and the West Maui tour. We really enjoyed the recommendations for spots to see as well as the great stories, history, and music in the app. The tour guide really did feel like another buddy in the car! We even ended up changing our plans and spending additional time in upcountry Maui after the app recommended visiting Makawao after the sunrise at Haleakala. While there a local artist gave us a hand drawn map of Kula, which we used as a guide for the rest of the day. Truly a unique experience that we would not have had without this app. Would recommend getting the tour bundle because it is cheaper and you will want to use it! My only suggestion for improvement is that sometimes the driving directions come a little too close to the turns, which can be a little stressful. We had google maps up in the car as well so we could try to guess the directions before they popped up. Will be recommending this app to everyone in the future!

Excellent guide!!!. I debated between signing up for a tour or doing the drive myself since I have a car. I though buying a tour would be safer for a female lone traveler like myself but the tours are so expensive! I decided to download the app & took the reverse route for a fraction of money that tours are charging . I made the best decision in doing that! The app. goes over a lot of details esp. safety and timing . I had my own private guide in the car with me along the way. I even took a few wrong turns and it brought be back on track. It kept me on track with the time too, making me decide which stops to make or not . I left Paia at 8:00 am and was back safely before 6:00 , plenty of daylight! I have to tell you though , the guide is very concerned about your safety and the first part of the tour will warn you about driving through unpaved roads as the rental agencies strongly discourages it! I had to pull over and ask a tour bus driver (parked in one of their stops) if he thinks I’ll make it with the car I have. A regular 4 door sedan. Driver said don’t worry I’ll be ok. Well, I went through those roads with a sedan and did just fine ! I highly recommend this app for anyone doing the road to Hana! I learned so much about the history of Hawaii along the way and the music they played in between points are impeccable! I had the best day in Maui today ! Thanks Shaka app for a stress free, and VERY economical way to the road to Hana!

Must have App for Maui!. I lived on Maui for almost a year about 30 years ago but decided it would be fun and helpful to have an app guide on our recent vacation and road trip to Hana. The Shaka Guide App was the perfect combination of map, guide, places of interest, humor, music, culture, language, history, and what I might call local knowledge. We LOVED this app! The guide/narrator gave great insight, helpful hints and plenty of silly jokes that you might expect from any in person tour guide. I especially appreciated when the guide made suggestions about what sites could be skipped and what sites were not to be missed. On our return trip from Hana, we listened to the history portion of the journey and I was amazed at how much we learned from the small soundbites. Hearing this history is so important in a place like Hawaii and should not be missed if you use this app. Besides the content of the app, we were very impressed with how the app functioned as it followed our journey with many stops and slow downs. With only a few exceptions the guide/narration followed us perfectly on our journey. By the time we finished our trip I think we were honestly both a little sad to turn off the app. I would recommend this app without hesitation for anyone visiting Hawaii!

Must have for Hawaiian travel!. We have used these Shaka Guides for Kauai, Oahu, and now Maui and tell everybody we know traveling to Hawaii about them. It’s like having a local, personal tour guide with you to tell you where to park, tell jokes and play music along the way as well as point out all the must sees for your trip. We love the map preview on the tours so we can see which tours take us where, and appreciate all the tips for road safety (like on Maui’s west coast road of death!), and places known for having great food or snacks. We LOVE the history stories and upbeat approach to travel, makes our trips so fun! We paid a FRACTION for the Maui bundle compared to just one ticket our relatives paid for a Road to Hana tour when we visited the island for a family event. We had SO much more fun not being stuck on a bus, elbow to elbow and not having control over which stops we made and how long we spent at each place. Wish we had a “Shaka” guide for every major city we travel to.

Great App!. We were recommended to this app by a friend, and we did the Road to Hana, Maui. It was scary! The music did get annoying on the way back so we would pause it, and then the tour guide would start back up again automatically. You should preview the spots on the tour 2 days before you plan to go, and make your reservations. Also, do your research—certain days of the week may be less crowded. If we knew that we would preview the spots on the listing ahead of time the night before, perhaps we would have booked the black sand park reservation ahead of time. Unfortunately, we passed the black sand park and did not have a reservation, but felt frightened enough of the road that we did not go back. We went all the way past Hana and did not reach the seven springs. We appreciated the reminder to turn around, providing us a time estimate for the way back. We were able to visit a public waterfall that people were swimming in. It was very far to get there. Heading back west toward the OGG airport on the road to Hana, was tricky since the stop sign for the one way roads favored the East bound traffic as they could come closer to the stop. It is dangerous to go in reverse. Overall, we survived thankfully and mostly in part a great thanks to the tips on tracking time and ensuring we have enough drive time for the journey back.

Classic Tour to Hana. This was the greatest experience ever!!!! My daughter and I took the day to explore the famous road to Hana. A friend told me about this app and recommended it to help guide us through the sights on our trip. The trip was amazing, breathtaking views and the most amazing beaches and agriculture we have ever seen. BUT, it would not have been the same experience without this tour playing along as we made the journey. The guise was spot on every single turn, the music made it seem like we were in the middle of some historical Hawaiian musical and the narrator was so engaging. There were times we both looked at each other and said, “what is happening and how do they know every single turn”!?!? Toward the end even, as you’re driving back, the story they tell and the music that accompanies you is like the ending to some magical tale of Hawaiian battles and royalties. We were laughing because it was such a perfect fit and we almost felt sad that it was over. We definitely lived in the moment as they instructed. We will not be leaving home in another route without Shaka tours. Was such a great experience that we will talk about forever. Aloha !!!!

Didn’t work!. My friend and I were excited to use this app after all the positive reviews. I paid the downloaded the app, paid the $20, and we hit the road...only to find out that you had to download individual files too, in addition to the app and buying the tours. So we tried to do this along the trip, but reception is tough for much of the road to Hana, and even though we just wanted to download the road to Hana file, the app made us download everything, and in a particular order. We ended up stopping at a coffee stop along the way and successfully downloaded it via their wi-fi. Once again, excited to be on our way, we plugged our phone in and set up the audio system. And it worked for maybe one segment, but anytime you disconnect your phone to take photos, you had to reconnect and figure out where you were again. And for some reason the app wouldn’t work properly with our car system, so I spent half of the trip fiddling with the audio system to figure out why the app would stop in the middle of a segment and go to a screen with music files. I’d restart the segment and it would happen all over again. I ended up watching my car’s audio system for half the trip, instead of enjoying the road to Hana.

A must-have for the Road to Hana. As two tourists from New York City who’d never been to Hawaii before, I’m pretty sure this drive would have been impossible without this app. We downloaded the “Classic” tour, and because of this app we were able to budget our time on the road and made sure we stopped at all of the essential detours (and skipped the ones he said may not be worth it), while still getting back to our hotel in Kihei before sundown. The app worked seamlessly with our car’s GPS. He tells you all the turns to make and the backroads to take, and he never missed once! Where the restrooms are, which food trucks to stop at. It can be so specific that he’ll tell you where to turn for the best banana bread, and he’s right! It WAS the best! The guy’s got major personality too. We’re still talking like him, “brah!” And make sure to leave the tour on for the ride home. He takes you through the entire history of Hawaii and King Kamehaha and you just learn so much and see so many beautiful things that it’s hard to put into words. Mahalo for an incredible experience!

This App is On Point. I have done the drive to Hana 4 times. The first three were don’t using the popular Maui Revealed Book which was the “old gold standard” in Maui for this trip. This app blew me away. It sinks up to your GPS and is spot on with telling you where to go, what to do and when to do it. The suggestions of the things to skip are spot on as well, as I have stopped at most of them in the past and felt like I wasted my time. It was great getting the instructions as to where we could swim and where we couldn’t. Leave at 6:30 or 7:00 am and you will get all the way to the end without a problem. My only complaint with this app is that the Seven Sacred Pools at the end are no longer open for swimming as of 1/3/17. It would be great if they could update the voice recording on the app to reflect that as we would have opted to stay longer at the Black Sand Beach. In fairness to the app, they did send an email which I read after the fact that did inform us of this. It would just be great to have heard it in the app. Bottom line, would never do the drive or advise anyone to do it without this fantastic app.

Just awesome...the tour guide made us feel like Ohana!. This app was so helpful. We did this tour on our first day in Maui and actually missed our “tour guide’s voice” the rest of our trip. (We even gave him our own name “Oggie” because I didn’t read the email entirely to the bottom to find out his real name lol). He was funny, accurate and so informative. My new fiancé =) was even debating on when to propose during this trip and because of something that was mentioned he found exactly when and where to propose. We didn’t get to make it to all the stops but we followed the tour’s advice and made it to all of the most spectacular sites. Time flew by rather quickly and because of his advice we were able to make the most of our time. For the rest of my trip, I even recommended this app to other tourists and visitors who were planning to do the Road to Hana. It definitely beat being on a tour bus. This gave us guidance but also the freedom to come and go as we pleased. On the drive back to our hotel, the app also gave us such an entertaining and valuable history about Maui and Hawaii. We are so grateful we used this app, we really got the whole package with this app. Not only did it guide us on the Road to Hana but it guided the road to my boyfriend’s proposal! =) Thank you Shaka Maui! You made all the difference in our trip! Until next time...Mahalo! - C&E

Personal tour guide. Must have for anyone planning a trip on the Hana Highway. (Even if you already have a great book about Maui (e.g. "Maui Revealed"). It really was like having a tour guide in your car. Since cell service is basically non-existent through the rainforest, it was nice that this worked without data. The tour guide's instructions for pull outs were SPOT ON, and he gave good advice on what was not to be missed and what you could skip for the sake of time. We used this app in addition to the book "Maui Revealed" and felt it vastly improved our trip. You don't want to spend time with your head down in a book during this tour for a couple of reasons. 1) You could miss something, and 2) you could get car sick. So if you have that book and think you don't need this... you may want to reconsider. IMPORTANT: Don't forget to download the app AND the tour (purchased in-app after it installs) before you go. It takes a while for the tour to install, and I had to give it several attempts because of the spotty internet service at the resort. I recommend doing it a day or two in advance (or at home using your own wireless network before leaving for your vacation).

Awesome App. Shaka is amazing! We were able to hit so many more spots than we had originally planned. It was great & totally worth the $10. If you are going on the road to Hana, I absolutely recommend this app. We purchased the “Classic” tour. We did it in 6-7 hours. Did I already mention It was amazing?!?! If you start in Kahului, you should leave at 9am. If you are starting in Paia, you should leave about 10am. The app wants to start you in Kahului, so just hit the second option to “join tour” where ever you are because it will wanna backtrack you to Kahului. We started in Paia. The app is amazing! It even tells you where you can get food and gas. It also has an offline map because there isn’t much cell signal on the road to Hana. We enjoyed it very much. We left Paia close to noon because we stayed a couple days in Hana. For those who are driving back, you’ll wanna start your trip at about 9am. You don’t have to stop at all the spots but the voice on the app (we named him Billy) will let you know of the places you might wanna skip if you got a late start. Buy this app! My boyfriend and I had a lovely trip to Hana. The bamboo forest is a must see. The entrance it hella sketch but it’s all worth it.

Will ease your worries. Used this app for the R2H loop tour that we did over 2 days. It had useful information about stops along the way and was extremely useful for driving and parking information. I ended up purchasing the package of tours they had and was very happy about it when on the morning of the drive we went to connect the app and it turned out the loop tour had not finished downloading despite it saying it had. The classic tour that I had downloaded on a whim had what we needed so we were able to use that instead. I’d say try to test the app out ahead of time to avoid any mishaps since you don’t want to spend precious time figuring out an app and finding wifi on your trip. Also, you can follow the app completely and have a great time but there are stops we found to be absolute musts that the app brushes over, research from other places lead to those bonus situations. Overall a very smart, useful and well put together app that takes the stress out of driving. I liked the sound track in some spots that added a little chill to the day too.

Honeymoon success thanks to this app. At first, we were a little bit skeptical about doing this tour ourselves without a guide. We didn't want to miss out on anything. However, we decided to just be adventurous and give this app a shot. Let me tell you, best decision ever... we were able to enjoy every single stop, go on our own pace and not have to worry about paying for a guided tour which would've made us have to stick to their schedule and itinerary. With this app, we were able to find two of our favorite spots. 1) the lava cave which is so much fun. We recommend you to go all the way in. You'll find a gorgeous little river pond. 2) the hidden Venus pool. This is a bit tricky and we would've never been able to even know it existed if it wasn't for this app. Listen carefully to the app instructions to be able to find the secret entrance. Once you find it... you'll find yourself walking into a clear blue swimming pond paradise. If you're a savage swimmer lol then go ahead and jump right in from the big rocks. If not, carefully go up the rocks and you'll find a tricky pathway to get down to the low waters. Anyway, this just shows how much we really loved this app and were so happy we didn't pay for a guided tour.

Wonderful guide. The road to Hana was awesome and the guide was very helpful and told us where to stop or not. However, he said that certain stops were meant for certain people. He cracked jokes and gave us a nice experience and we were never bored. Many people say that they were told not to stop at certain places or did not like the drive or the stops. That is criticism to a beautiful drive and not the guide. The guide recommended where you should stop but clearly said stop if you are interested in the topics he mentioned. He provided history and stories as well and some nice music. Some of the stops are closed because they can’t keep updating it every week when the open or close a building or marketplace which was another bit of criticism. Also, the guide is linked with the gps so as long as you don’t do funky stuff with your device or your device is decent, it should work(more criticism 🙄)as he has to talk about a stop when we are close to it.

No planning necessary!. We recently used the Shaka app to take multiple tours on Maui, Oahu and the Big Island and they totally made our trip! Very easy to use and incredibly informative, they made planning our day trips a breeze. In fact, no planning was necessary because they tell you exactly where to stop and what to do. It came in especially handy on the Road to Hana where there is way more to potentially do and see than you can get done in a day. Also loved the Haleakalā sunrise, North Shore Oahu, Volcanos National Park and Kohala Coast tours. There was no fear of missing out knowing that the Shaka Guide would take us to the best attractions and give an honest assessment of which ones could be skipped. We felt like we got way more out of our travels than if we were to just drive around looking at stuff. We and our kids learned a ton about Hawaiian history and culture and there was no need to mess with maps or cumbersome 200 page guidebooks. Works best if you have a rental car than can stream through the stereo via Bluetooth. Our rental Jeeps on two of the islands didn’t have this and it would not play properly through a USB connection or at all through a portable Bluetooth speaker for some reason. Maybe a technical issue to resolve but certainly not major - we just listened through the phone speaker and kept it charged. Very highly recommend.

Better than a guided tour. Traveling alone to Maui Hawaii my sister and I were determined to do the road to Hana. We were told by the concierge and other tourists who have travelled the road to Hana that you just must spend the money on a guided tour so you didn't miss out on any of the history, stories, or any of the attractions. On a whim we decided to download the app and we drove the road to Hana. What an amazing trip and application. We saved a couple hundred dollars by not paying for the tour but didn't miss a thing. This app took us to so many places. I even found that we were stopping in locations that the tour buses were not. Not only did it give us the history and stories but it even had nice Hawaiian music to fill in the blank spaces. We thought once the mission was complete, the narrative would stop but it did not. It gave us more stories and more music all the way home. It even gave us tips on attractions that might be worth skipping or that might be better to see on the way home for time saving management. This is an awesome application I would definitely say it is worth more even than the five dollars.

Amazing must have .. I should admit I am blow away by this tour. I am using I phone for 9 yrs and never ever bought any thing from App Store . We went to Hawaii and tried to do road to Hanna by our self and only made it half way on first day . That’s to seeing not much . Then we went to tickets for less and Ron there suggested to download this app . I did and figured out it was paid. Took the heli tour in am and then at heliport bought this tour and downloaded on lte . Took 5 minutes or so and then started to Hanna . There is so much to do that you can do all in one day so for first timer do it in 2 days !! We skipped all the first days spot and any hikes and made all the way to 80 feet fall . Did not go to the 7 sacred pool as it was already 4:30 pm . The app for fun . Tell you interesting facts and also I think 10 $ we’ll spent . I would advise to buy the hole Maui package for any trip you take as it will help you to see and this helped us the second day . We should have app for every tourist spots like this . I am thinking about making my own and make a company out of it lol .

Road to Hana…closed. Update: Shaka Maui was very responsive & even though they WEREN’T RESPONSIBLE for the issues we encountered, they did everything possible to make sure it was made right in our eyes. Thank you Shaka Maui for taking care of your customers! ********************* We downloaded this app to take our kids on the Road to Hana. They wanted to see waterfalls & hike. We paid the $15 for the app & started our trip. We opted for the Reverse Trip option. The roads were crazy windy but it was fun…until we’re were stopped by construction trucks. They said the road was closed b/c they were replacing a bridge . We had already driven over 2 hours & we were turned away 8 miles from Hana. The construction worker said, “they put the road closure in the newspaper.” Who reads the newspaper in 2021?! We were very disappointed so we just turned off the app & turned around & drove 2+ hrs backs the way we came. Never saw Hana. Wasted a whole day.

Great way to see the islands. My wife and I recently made our very first trip to Hawaii (Maui and Kauai). Before leaving, we discovered the Shaka Guide to Kauai and Shaka Guide to Maui apps. We are really glad that we did. During our vacation, we bought and used 3 different tours (Road to Hana, North Shore Kauai Tour, Waimea & Na Pali Tour) and found them to be super helpful and entertaining. We saw so many things and learned so much that we would have missed if we had made the trip on our own without these apps. It was like having a local tour guide right in our car with us (but at a fraction of the price). We highly recommend! Each tour was well worth the price. In addition, the support provided by Andrew was exceptional! The day before we did the Road to Hana, I was having trouble downloading the tour to my iPhone. I called Shaka Guides to ask for support on a Monday evening. Andrew immediately called me back. He was able to identify the reasons that I was having a problem (my wifi connection was slow and intermittent) and then guided me to resolve the issue, staying on the phone until the process was completed!

Awesome App!. I normally don't leave reviews. However, I felt this was worth leaving a review. At first I was concerned about how good the app would work, and not having any cell service for most of the trip, I wondered how the app would work. We followed the directions and turned off cellular and left GPS on. It was fantastic. It was like having our own personal tour guide. Yes, it still worked without cell service and the music was a nice touch as there is no radio signal for pretty much the whole trip. We plugged the cell phone into the car and listened through the car stereo. The narrative is very informative and gives great information through out the entire trip. Some key elements for me was at the beginning of the app he talks about how to handle the one lane bridges and suggests that if you are starting your trip and it's after 10 you should probably consider not doing the trip or not stopping as much.. He also tells you where to park to see key view points and suggests stops that you can skip or stops that he highly recommends. Even where bathrooms are and places to eat along the way.

Read this review, please. If you are traveling with small children, older, living with low mobility, uncomfortable with being in unfamiliar places, and prefer to see the “sites” mostly from the comfort of your rental car— maybe you would enjoy this tour. If you are younger, adventurous, and looking to tap into all Maui has to offer on the Road to Hana, DO NOT USE THIS APP. Trust me. As two 30-somethings who wanted a more active and adventurous Road to Hana tour, we regret using this app. I’m fact, it’s one of the primary vacation disappointments of my adult life. I know, I sound dramatic. I get it. But the Road to Hana could be a once in and lifetime opportunity and this app and tour are not meant for everyone — it definitely was not meant for me. Im so sad that I wasted much of day following these instructions. I actually had researched a number of alternative itineraries (which I do recommend) prior to downloading this but didn’t save the info for the long jaunt through service-less territory. I’m still seething from all of the let-downs today offered up. Please don’t let this be how you choose to see the Road to Hana. Unless of course you fall into the category of people I described in the beginning of this post.

Great app. We just did the classic road to Hana tour and it was great, very easy to use and without any glitch, just remember to download the tour before hitting the road. We started the tour from hotel, the app send the start location to google map so when we got there the tour automatically start. You don’t need any other navigation app this app shows the direction but you need connect it to the car via apple car play or Bluetooth to have a better audio in the car. There is a pause toggle switch so you can pause the tour for each stop. We started around 7:30 am and reached Hana around 1:00 pm. The information and guidance is grade and on time we didn’t miss any stop. The road after Hana is a bit rough and narrow so I won’t recommend drive beyond Hana for everyone, my wife wasn’t comfortable on the way back, up to Hana are packed with great stops and can cover a whole day, even if you start early. High light of trip was wai’anapanapa state park which we get there 3-4 hours after the start point, I highly recommend this app

This tour was essential.. We drove the full loop to Hana and back yesterday. We had a guide book, but this app was essential. There are so many options and stops which do not have any signs or markers. The app lets you know in advance and tells you where to stop. For example, there is a lava tube cave, which is unmarked and on the road to Hana. No cars were stopped there and it was just a small hole in the ground, until you go inside. The detour to Nahiku was worth the time. In addition to an incredible view of the shore and crashing waves, we walked down the rapids to a beautiful crystal clear pool. Don’t let the closed, dilapidated bridge scare you off from proceeding. My wife loved the wild pig which darted across this isolated road in front of our Jeep. The “rental car-violating” portion of the drive was not too bad (My wife tolerated it...which says a lot.). In addition to sharing a single lane with oncoming cars, at one point our Jeep was surrounded by cattle. It was like running with the bulls in Pamplona. The music and stories kept us amused during the white-knuckle driving times of this 12-hour day. We had a great time, but could not have done it without the guidance of this app.

So fun!. We did the full loop to Hana. This was an awesome guide around the loop with fun music and facts about Maui and it’s history, with great stop suggestions! There is a sign just before the Venus pools that’s says “Shaka guide irresponsible” and that is just not true! One thing that the guide said though that was not true is when you go to Haleakala National park, the guide says if you have a ticket from a previous day (like from driving to the top) that is expired the parks service will honor it for a cheaper price instead of paying the full fee again. This is not true, our ticket was 2 days expired and we had to pay the full price again, FYI the tickets expires 3 days after purchase. Also we tried to make a reservation for the black sand beach the day before and it was already sold out so I recommend planning farther ahead and looking multiple days in advance. Other than that this was awesome and I would totally use it again!

Made for an absolutely awesome day!. We are in Maui for the first time, from Michigan. Had heard that we HAD TO do the road to Hana but wanted more flexibility than a regular tour bus could have given us. This app absolutely made our day! The information was all correct and up-to-date, the hints and suggestions were extremely helpful, the guide was super engaging, educational and, at times, even truly funny. We even dug the music selections — some of it was just background elevator-ish music but a lot of it (maybe ALL of it?) was Hawaiian and even got quite deeply cultural which enhanced the educational aspect of the tour. We did the there-and-back trip (not the loop) so we were NOT looking forward to having to do the same drive twice but the totally different information and stories on the way back truly did make the drive so meaningful and fun. This app was absolutely indispensable! If we ever do another road trip in Hawaii (and we hope we do!), we will look for a Shaka Guide! Wish we were on social media so we could share the love far and wide. ❤️ Mahalo!

AMAZING TOUR GUIDE!. I found this app while searching for travel safe app for our trip to Hawaii and really enjoyed reading the raving reviews. I downloaded this app and told my partner all about it and right when I bought the Road to Hana tour while in Maui, he said “you shouldn’t have bought it, it’s a waste of money.” What a turnaround it turned out to be after listening to our tour guide navigate us on the road to Hana! We had lots of laughs, enjoyed our tour guide’s humor, and felt like we had another buddy on our trip. The recommendations on activities to skip or do were very helpful because we were short on time since instead of starting at 8am, we started at 12pm! Shaka Guide kept us company during a tough time during our drive home at NIGHT! We started the tour a little late and even when the sun was starting to set, we still pushed on full speed ahead! So even when driving on the winding and rollercoaster ride of a road out of Hana to reach civilization in the dead of night. We were extremely informed by the interesting legend stories and legendary history. The music playing along the road made us feel so at ease; it was very soothing and relaxing to drive to 🤗 You know how you wish there was a theme song for your life and every moment of your life? That’s what this tour did for us. It really set the mood for the day and helped us enjoy this trip to the fullest. Thank you, SHAKA GUIDE! 🤙

This app is the best tour guide app EVER!. I absolutely loved this app. The tour guide was entertaining and informational. He told jokes and made me and my family laugh and have fun during the trip! He gave informational tips on every stop and the GPS was accurate. Every stop he recommended was wonderful and was worth while. The tour guide also recommended stuff that a normal tour guide app wouldn’t, for ex. ice cream shops and general stores. And those stops where DEFINITELY worth while as well. The tour guide also made sure that we we were all safe and cosy in our car, and helped us avoid wrong/unsafe roads. He also told us stories about our stops and the history that goes with it. Those history lessons were fun, entertaining, and just overall informational. I literally didn’t want to leave the app because I loved the tour so much. This tour guide app is so much like a real tour guide, that sometimes I thought there was a real guide in our car with us! I DEFINITELY recommend this app and you guys should go ahead and check this out.

Huge help!. Not sure we could have done the road to Hana without this app! It really helped us narrow down the places we wanted to stop, since you really can’t stop at all of them. The timing of everything worked out great with the app connected to our cars usb and the navigation following us exactly. The history was a nice touch and actually didn’t put us to sleep. Just a few things could be tweaked to help the experience... if they added difficulty in hiking terrain. My 72 year old mother had a hard time on some of the short hikes and we really had no idea ahead of time what we were getting into. I realize things change with the weather but a general idea would be very helpful. Also, we kinda got lost in The town of Hana looking for food, and then finally found more food as we were exiting the town. Lastly, please fill the extra dead time in between points with more Hawaiian music. Even with these small flaws, I still highly recommend this app and would use again!

Was hoping for more. App was great for navigation and you download so you have it without service. Guide was good but felt he kept repeating same things. There were several things I thought were missing to better plan the journey. First, ability for it to recognize items you saved and announce those stops. We actually missed one because it was not an announcement. Two, wish I could have just said skip some stops which would allow me to better plan. But I had no idea what was coming until close to the stop not really allowing for planning out the day at least some. Also, I couldn’t zoom in prior to even try to map out as well. I do wish there were live updates, such as the fact pretty much none of the waterfalls have water or very little running. So majorly of stops were disappointing and definitely would not have gone to seven scared pools had they provided real time updates. Overall did the basics and had some good information. On the way back for some reason it had trouble and kept announcing stops already had even though it recognized I completed the road to Hana and was on my way back so shut it off and we just drove and hit a few spots that were busy and we skipped.

Absolutely fantastic app. My family and I used Shaka app for our recent trip to Maui. I can’t say enough about how helpful, entertaining and informative the app was. We bought the package of all the different tours and we ended up using almost all of them. The way the app works it was very easy for us to tailor the ones we didn’t need for a full tour to accommodate specific areas we were exploring. For the ones where we did the full tour, it was so easy to move at our own pace, and tailor it to our schedule. There is also a feature that helps you get from your location to the tour starting point that was very helpful. We also found the pieces of information about our surroundings and the history to be really interesting and an enjoyable addition in between the different stops on the tour. We have gone to Kauai for years but this was our first time in Maui and our first time using Shaka. Now we can’t wait to use it next time on Kauai to see what we may have been missing all these years!

Adventurous? You must get before you go. This was a personal tour guide. Worked without data flawlessly. We got so used to him talking to us we missed it when there where pauses. The app navigate you and picks up where you're located and will give appropriate messages. I want suggestion is that we pushed hard all the way to the end as fast as we could. We skipped many things on the way, but plan to do them on the way back. Our goal is to get all the way to the end they beat the crowds. While we encountered no traffic whatsoever because we start at 5:30 in the morning. The app does not repeat all the placesthat you passed. But, it will remind you about some of the places it's suggested you skip on the way to Hana to begin with to save time. Honestly this was the best 599 I've ever spent on an app. And when we come back in five months for a wedding we will use the same app and do this trip again and look at places that we did not experience. Furthermore, we are going to do the volcano, and get the guided tour for that.

The perfect guide!. We loved having the Shaka Guide with us during our Road to Hana adventure. We learned a lot about the culture and history of Hawaii and had so much fun along the way! These guys really know what they’re doing and they have everything you’d need to know to have the best experience in your Road to Hana. The stories and music on the way back kept us entertained since it can get pretty boring coming back at night since you can’t see any of the views and you’re basically just driving through tons of curves in the dark. The only thing we would say is that we think the tour is mainly for the summer since we started early, but weren’t able to get to the Pipiwai Trail and 7 sacred pools. Haleakala National Park entrance closes at 5pm and we weren’t aware of this until we got there. We have enough time in Maui, so we will go back again to hit the areas we skipped, but if you can only go for 1 day and want to see the Pipiwai Trail (Banyan Tree, Bamboo Forest) and 7 Sacred Pools, we’d recommend you skip more than a few of the stops along the way (in the winter time only).

4 stars almost perfect-4.8 if I could !. This app was amazing- seriously great at guiding us on some treacherous roads with detailed descriptions and very helpful info on what’s to come down the road. The only thing I would want more detail on is the actual stops/hikes. For example, we stopped at the blowhole on the west Maui tour but couldn’t find the heart shaped rock. A bit of guidance to its location could have helped. We also did the reverse road to Hana and this helped us navigate with great detail. I don’t know what we would have done without it! Gave more detail on most hikes but we still missed a few things like the ocean cave. Really saw a lot though!! The hike to the farthest waterfalls after the 7 pools trail is totally worth it albeit long! This is a must download app if coming to Maui and down for an adventure. We would absolutely use again for another trip and recommend to friends. Also, get the upgrade to a Jeep! Roads are crazy in some spots! It was very rainy when we did Hana and I don’t think we would have made it through some muddy and flooded spots without it.

Get it!!. I am not one to spend money on apps, so I hesitated about spending money on this one. But I took the plunge and got the entire bundle of tours to cover anything we might do while in Maui. It was the best decision I could have made! We saw amazing sights on the Road to Hana we wouldn’t have known to stop for, we were prepared for tricky spots on the road, and we had the confidence to take the back road on the West side of the island from Hana, and we certainly would not have done it without having this guide to let us know what to expect ahead. We saw amazing things that we would have been too nervous to see! We also listened to the West Coast guide as we drove to Lahaina and to snorkel beyond and listened to some great history and got useful recommendations along the way. If you are renting a car to drive around and explore Maui, just spend the money for this guide, you won’t regret it…and this is coming from a reluctant spender!

Time of My Life. We wouldn’t have enjoyed Maui as much as we did without this app! It was well worth the investment. Because of Covid this app was an excellent source for reporting what places had restrictions and required reservations. We saw things many of our friends didn’t know about, in fact as first timers to Maui we saw so much more than our friends had who went before us. One of our favorite parts was our personal tour guide speaking to is on Bluetooth in our rental car. He gave us amazing history lessons and stories along the way and music as well, for the Journey. We took The Road to Hana tour and The Loop road tour. We found amazing snorkeling spots, lava tubes, blow holes, amazing views, hidden arboretum, and more. We had one challenge and that was at times we missed our turns because the speaker would tell us to turn a little to late, we figured out how followed the gps that’s included instead of the voice. It’s a minor flaw and didn’t ruin our trip. I highly recommend this app!

Awesome “Bra!”. We took our second tour of Hana Hwy using the Ap going the reverse direction this time. Can’t say enough good things about the tour…. Music, history, points of interest were all right on! We took our first Shaka tour 6-7 years ago and my family still imitate the narrators voice and his little sayings! I agree with another reviewer that it would have been nice to have a quick update at the very beginning of the tour saying what places were closed. I downloaded the ap the day of the trip so there was no time to read an email that supposedly talked about the changes (like 7 pools not open for swimming). The other thing that made us miss some spots was when he’d say something is coming up in 3 miles , for example, the next time it was announced was when we were right on top of the stop! Maybe we were driving too fast but it seems like an earlier “final call” might make things easier to find. Also, adding a visual map to the program would be hugely helpful! Even if it was a picture of what the next stop looked like would be great! Overall this ap is awesome! I recommend it all the time! Thanks for a great day!!

Reverse Road to Hana Tour. As we had heard Maui was very crowded, especially the Road to Hana, my partner and I decided to do the reverse road to Hana tour to avoid crowds. We got this recommendation from someone on our scuba dives and decided to download it the night before without really knowing much. Best decision ever. This guide works flawlessly with or without cell signal. The stops are awesome, and remember, you can always skip stops on the way and just hear about them while driving. We got to stop at the Seven Sacred pool and the trail over there before most people were there. By the time we finished, the parking lot was so packed. Also, I’m not sure if we would’ve been able to hike the trail going the normal route as you must start it before 3pm or they lock the gates on you! So, as far as doing the normal or reverse route, there are certainly pros and cons. The ride in the beginning can be precarious and there are cows and goats crowing the road in front of you. It felt really adventurous and fun though. I wholeheartedly recommend this app. Just get it now! You don’t have to think about anything or bring any books, you just listen and the day is planned for you!

Great guide. First time driving the road to Hana and couldn’t imagine having done it without this app. The absolute only criticism I have is that they only let you know the seven pools “may be closed” once you are about 15 minutes away. It’s more my fault for not doing more research, but once we got there it turns out the seven pools have been closed for swimming since January 2017. Seems like the app could be updated to let you know that info well ahead of 15 minutes prior to arrival. But since it’s a state park I’m sure the app owners are incentivized to leave that fact out since it costs $25 to get into the park, and if you’re aware that the pools are closed in advance you probably wouldn’t go. I know we would have turned around after Hana if we knew the pools were closed, but when you drive that far and find out only 15 minutes before that they are closed, you’re likely to continue regardless and in turn drive revenue for the park. Again, I’m not ignorant and I understand how business works, but it’s a shame they won’t update the app or put a disclaimer somewhere that states the pools are closed.

Totally worth it, but is frustrating.. We got this app and the Road to Hana IAP for our drive to Hana based on a recommendation from another visitor in Maui. It made our drive so much better! Not only did it tell us all the great activities to stop and do along the way, but it gave some etiquette for the drive (how to do the one lane bridges), told us where to park, where to find restrooms, where to get good snacks, and some history lessons, all at the time it was relevant to us in our drive. 5 stars for content! The rating comes down because the app was so frustrating. It constantly asks you to log in with Facebook or Google requiring 2 extra steps to get around it each time you come back to the app. If you leave the app for a while to see one of the sights it doesn't always come right back to the tour so you have to get around the sign in requests, then open the tour (where it often froze or crashed), then once the tour opened again it would pick up where it left off. So it's a great app and totally enhances your drive to Hana, just frustrating at times.

Better than we could ever asked for!. We recently used Shaka guide Maui and did two of the tours: road to Hana and Haleakala national park tour. We loved the guide. It allowed us to have a better tour than with a large group. From our own car and at our own pace. It provided detailed guidance turn by turn based on gps and allowed us to see hidden gems (like waterfalls and lava tubes!) that would have otherwise been missed. It had detailed information about gas, places to eat, bathrooms as well as how to divide our time wisely so we can get to all of the tour. The gps tour triggering feature was especially helpful on the road to Hana with the multiple dangerous curves and turns in an area without telephone signals. It allowed us to see all of the wonderful stops safely and enjoy every moment. We will definitely use Shaka guides again for our other vacations. We were so happy with the tours we told other tourists about it on our last day when they asked where all we had gone and how we got there.

Totally worth the money!. This tour was inexpensive and totally worth every penny, for the info on available restrooms alone!! My fiancé and I drove all the way to Ohe’o Gulch and back and we didn’t leave Paia until about 9:45. We had done the road to Hana before but never made it to Ohe’o Gulch so that was our goal. We didn’t make a lot of stops on our way there, since we had done many before, but even still made the time to stop at the black sand beach near Hana and some of the waterfalls. It’s definitely possible to do the whole trip starting that “late” we were sure to leave Ohe’o by 4 and were set up having dinner at Momma’s Fish House by 630! This guide is awesome! It turns itself on and off based on your location, is full of helpful info (bathrooms for sure) and made the trip far more enjoyable. We had some technical difficulty the first time we turned the car off and drove for a few minutes without the guide but quickly pulled over to get it reset. We missed it! The app even has trouble shooting built right in. For me, shutting off my iPhone and restarting it did the trick. The guide had just the right tone and amount of info, even the interesting historical stories for the way back. I would definitely purchase another guide from Shaka Guides again!

Family of 5 all loved our tour. We are a family with 3 teens. Hawaii is expensive and we had to carefully pick where we spent our money for the best value. We bought the full package of Maui guided tours. By far our best vacation investment. The music was excellent and really added to the ambience or “vibe” of our drives. The tour helped us survive a very long road to Hana and kept us laughing and learning about the rich history and culture of the Island. If you are thinking… “what?…5 people, 3 teenage girls, all in a car winding and twisting through dangerous jungle conditions for 13 hours?” The answer would be-yes- and so glad we did it. it is absolutely no joke though. Be on the top of your driving game and don’t do it without your Shaka guide. We started at 6AM and finished just in time to see the sunset over Mama’s Fish House. We did have some upset stomachs and occasional whining along the way, but we made great memories. After 10 beautiful days in Hawaii, our 18 year old sited the Shaka guide tours as one of her biggest highlights. You could not get a higher compliment! Thanks for being such a special part of our very special vacation! Do NOT hesitate to buy any of these.

Incredible!!. I purchased the Road to Hana Loop tour. It is the best money spent in Maui hands down. My two young adult children (23 & 22) and I drove the Road to Hana using this tour and we were so impressed with the depth of information provided. The tour is very easy to follow at your own pace. But the best feature is the clear detail to find the “hidden” access points to waterfalls and hikes you would never find on your own. Literally stopping and climbing through a small hole in the bamboo on the side of the road, following the trail, crossing a river and ending at the most beautiful waterfall! Also, directions to find the red sand beach that we would never have found on our own. We loved the history about Hana, Maui and Hawaii provided as well. And also the honest input about the quality of some roads and the risk involved. We felt like the tour guide was part of the family after our 10 hour adventure. You will not regret this purchase. We are planning to purchase the Haleakala tour as well. Thanks Shaka Guide for adding so much to our Maui vacation!!!

Great way to explore Hawai’i. The App works great- tried two tours on Maui and it was a lot of fun.

Classic road to Hana. The tour was really helpful and reviewed places we would’ve missed otherwise. It provided us with some historical background of Hawaii which was rather interesting. I think it was absolutely worth it!

Loved it for RTH. Worked great and very informative.

Perkins family. The tour was extremely fantastic with great information and extremely easy to follow the steps. It was well worth the money spent to buy the app and also to drive the road to Hana.

Amazing app. Downloaded this for the Road to Hana loop. Amazing app that shows you so many the great spots along the way that you would otherwise miss.

Great App. Just found it cut out a bit in offline mode. Otherwise a wealth of information and fun. Mahalo.

Fantastic tour guide. Easy to navigate, stop and start at your leisure. Pick and choose what you want to stop and see. Don’t see it all; there is not enough time in your day. Learn interesting facts and historical stories along the way. Great Hawaiian music too. Definitely recommend.

This app was awesome!. Such a great help for us as we navigated our way to Hana. So glad we made the trip and had this great app to guide us.

Joyful Journey. Wow we loved this app made the drive to Hana so much fun. We loved the tips and historical facts the music was quirky and fun. We loved that we didn’t miss anything and were given informative information from which we were able to decide where we stopped. I would definitely us these apps again and will be recommending it to all my friends. Mahalo keep up your great work.

Top tour, very entertaining. Must download. Never missed a beat and made the road to Hana one to remember #herecomesthesun

Best Around !. This app totally made our road trip to Hana totally enjoyable ! Full Of well times knowledge parking tips and turn offs leading to some of the best secrets of the Road to Hana. This is the best way to take your journey on the road to Hana! Aloha!

Best app ever!. The Shaka guide to Maui is brilliant. The best travel guide that you could get, other than having a local tour guide/historian sat in your car with you! We travelled on three of Shaka's trips (Road to Hana, West Maui and Sunset at Haleakala) and each of them was interesting and amusing, and included useful tips of what was a 'must see' or what you could afford to skip if you were running short on time. In particular the road directions, including where to stop, were extremely precise. Highly recommended and well worth the small outlay to purchase this outstanding app. We are now in Waikiki and have purchased the Shaka guide to Oahu.

sensational. I never rate apps, but this one deserves a big 🤙

Great option. Great option to have if you like driving yourself around at your own pace. Very smart app, user friendly, informative, and works well when you’re not the kind of traveller that prefers your busses for everything. Well worth it!

Unreal. Fantastic and amazing guide. Wouldn’t have been the same without it. Loved it.

Excellent App!!. This app was so helpful to navigate the road to Hana solo , it was so great having our own tour guide right in the car with us. Loved the info on the way back too, I’m looking forward to seeing what the other island guides have in store. ☺️🤙🏽

Great personal tour. Very easy to listen to with sites and history along the way. Made our trip very easy, as it told you ahead of time where to pull in, where toilets were and food stalls.

RTH. This is a must app for road to Hana. Does all the planning for you. Loads of information along the way. Pick and chose when to stop. Makes recommendations for timing. Some history information for your return trip. Highly recommended it

So Helpful - Great Self Guided Tour. So Helpful - Great Self Guided Tour and very user friendly. Driving on the other side of the road is stressful enough, but this self guided tour made the drive so much easier. We were recommended this by some people we ran into at the Hotel and so glad they did, not sure how we would of done it without it!

Great value, excellent tours! A+. Hands down the best value of anything we did or purchased while in Hawaii. The tours were easy to access, very funny and informative. The only thing we could think to critique was the Seven Sacred Pools at the end of the Road to Hana which were closed down and apparently have been for some time now, so might need to update that part of the Hana tour. Absolutely love this app & would definitely recommend!

Awesome Road to Hana Guide. The Shaka Maui Road to Hana guide was amazing!! Everything you need to know or want to do on the road to Hana is in this app. Very detailed and highly recommended instead of the pricey tours that are available. Yes the roads can be windy but not as difficult as some people make it out to be.

Road to Hana!. Fantastic app, very informative and entertaining. Highly recommend downloading this app if you travel the Road to Hana! Aloha!

Fantastic. Fantastic way to experience the road to Hana. Highly recommended

Great option if you want to take your own time. Great app and information about the routes. GPS and maps worked fine if downloaded before hand. One of the tours we did Int he reverse order and the key points were a bit out of place but otherwise great option!

Must have app!. This app was awesome! We did the road to Hana for the first time last month. We rented a car and drove the whole way past Hana. There’s no way we would have known about some of the places without this app. Worth every penny. Loved the historical stories as well.

Fantastic tour guide and great value. Purchased the guide for the Road to Hana for our trip 12th July 2018. Cannot recommend this enough! Found so many gorgeous spots and lots of hidden ones that everyone else drove past! You have to make sure you do Red Sea Beach!!!!

Awesome. Downloaded this for my trip to Hana and it was awesome. You get so much more out of this trip by having this. It tells you when sites are coming up and gives you some great facts about the road to Hana & Maui. Highly recommend it 😃

Great app for self drive tour. Very well done and good narration! We got everything we needed for our first trip to Maui

100% Recommended. Shaka Guides is a great way to see the island without any fuss of booking tours and other tourists. We did two tours a Classic Hana and Sunset Haleakala, and they were so much fun. There were so many interesting historical facts and stories included and great directions were given throughout the entire trip. We enjoyed it so much that we just downloaded the big island Shaka guide too. You won’t regret it!

Best app ever!. This was the best guide to have on both the Road to Hana and also Haleakala! Love how it automatically starts playing based on your GPS location and the guide himself was good to listen to and had some neat facts. There was one spot on Halakeala that we were going to drive past, but based on the guides recommendation we stopped and it was the best spot on the summit!

Awesome Tour Guide App. I highly recommend this app. We just used it for the Road to Hana and it was a wealth of information, humorous and we saw things we would have totally missed without it. Extremely accurate with where to stop giving you plenty of notice and lots of little bits of information along the way as well as amazing history. Will use again for other tours of all Hawaii Islands. Really well put together, thank you.

What a great day -Thanks Shakra!. This app made our day from great to fantastic- it was informative, fun and had super music. We had a laugh which also added to an unreal first time experience in Maui. Thanks for a great job in the tips & advice you gave - we have already purchased another app for our next adventure!

A great App!!. This is a must for anyone to travel the road to Hana or any tour offered by Shaka! The tour was very informative and entertaining. It was also great to have offline directions available the entire way and expert advice from a local guide who provided access to all the best spots! Mahalo for the great day! Keep up the good work!!

CAUTION: Make sure you use this app in Maui!!! 😎. First time for us in Maui and the tours on this app are the best! Informative, fun, mauilicious & very accurate! 🙏 thanks to the creators 😀

Oz in Maui. Having this app was fantastic!! Completely made our trip to Hana, best money we spent in Hawaii 👌

Maui tours. I have used both the Hana Highway tour and Haleakala when traveling with my family. They were both fantastic we loved the history and the music throughout and saw so much we would never have known about if we were just using a map. Thanks

Review. This took absolutely forever to actually load in fact so long that we ended up doing the entire drive on our own without the actual app. Absolutely a complete waste of time & money,

Best $10 spent on Maui. We absolutely loved this app. It made the road to Hana so much more achievable and we just couldn't of been happier. The prompts to stop- and to not stop if we wanted to see bigger and better were exactly what we're after. Mahalo!

Helpful and informative. Made the trip real easy!. You won’t regret it. Entertaining and surprisingly accurate.

Awesome app. Thanks for this app.

Good Purchase. Guide was great and very informative. Would recommend.

A must!. Amazing helpful informations to make this trip a beautiful day!

Awesome app!!!. This app was so awesome, so spot on and so helpful. Gave me and my family a wonderful tour and SO many places to visit. If you don’t want to do a tour and want more freedom PLEASE PLEASE get this app it is worth every penny! It will help you and tell you all the stops and if you want to skip any you can! This was so great!

LOVED IT!. Amazing

Great advice, entertaining and easy to use. Felt like we had a guide in the car. What a great way to spend the day.

Road to Hana experience. We absolutely loved learning about Hawaii’s history, culture and highlights of the road to Hana. We had our own private tour guide with us!

So good!. This app is amazing, informative and oh so helpful. Well worth the money!

Outstanding app!. We just completed the loop drive and would highly recommend using the app for this. We found some amazing stops that we could not have found without the app. Especially the Eden pool. We were the only people at the pool. Thank you so much for making the last two days so wonderful.

Classic Road to Hana. Could not access the tour. The GPS signal did not work on the road to Hana. Extremely disappointing. We were counting on you!!!

Best travel app!. This app is a must-have companion on your trip through Maui. Whether you are travelling alone or with a group, it gives excellent advice from what to do to where to eat. I wouldn’t have seen half as much or had nearly as magical experience without it. Highly recommend.

Only way to see the road to Hana. This was recommended by someone when we booked an accommodation for our road trip to Hana. It is the only way to do the road to Hana. There are so many random stops and is impossible to know where to stop and which ones are worth it. This guide does a great job explaining everything! It is also entertaining. My kids even liked it and the app/guide became a part of experience. Highly recommended

Incredible tour guide. We were recommended this app from a friend and I can’t thank them enough! We used the Shaka Guide app for the Classic Road to Hana, the West Coast Maui tour and the Haleakala Sunrise. Each tour has unique history of Maui that we’re presented throughout the travel, where I learned so much I wouldn’t have without the app. The timing for each trip was pretty accurate as well. I also appreciated the tips about the tougher turns and alternate routes to take. Shaka Guide helped make our trip to Maui that much more memorable and I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Maui. Thank you!

Well worth the money. Recently did road to Hana with it and it was exceptional.

Did not expect that much but the Hana tour was excellent.. We did not expect much from the Shaka app but we REALLY enjoyed the Hana tour, the app worked very well and the tour guide was really fun and informative, it left us full of smiles and memories. It definitely made our drive to Hana much better than it would have been without it. I would certainly use Shaka app again next time I visit Hawaii.

Great Value. Great Value, well worth the price!

A total game changer. Visiting Maui with this app takes tourism to another level. We’ve been to places that I could not have possibly imagined, many off beaten paths. I sure wish there were more apps like this for places all over the world.

Nice. Nice app!

Fantastic. Made the road to Hana an awesome experience. This app is amazing and very accurate!!

Wonderful. Was fantastic. So glad we had Shaka guide us to all the best spots

Awesome. Learned a lot about the history of the area with this app. There was a lot of etiquette tips on the commentary that was also very helpful.

Make sure you get this if you’re going on the Road to Hana. My friends and I did the classic Hana loop and it was a great tour experience. The tour guide was informative, fun, and told some great stories about Hawaii and it’s history during the drive. t uses your phones GPS to trigger the right sound clip at different parts of the journey and it worked really well at guiding you where you want to go. By the end of it my friends and I were sad our time with the tour guide and the road was over. Would recommend this app to anyone I know who’s wants to travel Hawaii and also get a guided tour they can go at their own pace and comfort. Mahalo 🤙

Adventure awaits. Your Maui adventure awaits with this amazing app. Explore the island on your own timeline with local music while driving from site to site. Great stories and tidbits from such a soothing voice that feels like a local friend taking you through the island. I honestly thought I was only going to use the Road to Hana app. Ended up buying the package and so glad I did. We used the app for the West Loop as well as the Haleakala Sunrise. Highly recommend!

Fantastic !!!. What a great way to enjoy the Road To Hana! Pretty sure we saw everything there is to see ~ thank you!

Great tour!!. This was absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for the great tour!!!

An absolute must!. So happy we found this before our road to Hana trip! It was amazing. The stops, suggestions, and stories were fantastic!

Great experience with Shaka Maui!. Took the Classic Road to Hana trip and especially loved all the insider tips on parking and places to skip! The Venus Pool was a highlight!!

Best part of our trip!. This was such an amazing app to listen to in our van via Bluetooth so that the family could all experience the sights together. Super relaxing and informative! It’s awesome for families with kids!

Awesome guide. So fun to listen and learn! Had a great time on the big island and Maui with these tours and saw so many things I otherwise would have just missed!

Excellent Tour. This is a great app with lots of good information for your vacation in Maui. We downloaded a tour for the Road to Hana. The app worked well and the tour was excellent. Even my teens enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

Awesome!. We loved Shaka guide! Hard to drive around Hawaii now without the app loaded up lol!

Enjoyed the Ride. Overall this app was very helpful and we loved the tips and narrative. Wouldn’t have enjoyed the day as much without the app. We would NOT recommend the Garden of Eden as he did, it cost us $40 for a family of 4, to then pay more to feed the ducks. Then a <15 minute walk to see a pretty horrible view of the Jurassic park rock and an unfulfilling view of the waterfall, which we were later told was better from the road.

Fun on Classic Road to Hana Trip. Thank you for making our drive on the road to Hana so much fun. The guided tour was awesome to listen to and made the drive fun and interactive. We loved the music, the stories, the advice on where to stop. I don’t think we would have had so much fun without the narrative along the drive. I highly recommend this app and trip to everyone. Worth every penny. Aloha. Thank you!

So impressed!. We used this guide for the reverse road to Maui - it was so useful to have this app playing throughout the tour - it was like having a local tour guide in the car! Who also played music and told us stories along the way. You can pause the tour at anytime if you take a detour and it will just rejoin when you get to the next GPS point. There is super helpful advice about pit stops for bathroom breaks, where to gas up and food recommendations - a perfect companion for this road trip!

Perfect day thanks to Shaka Maui. We just completed the Road to Hana loop today and we couldn’t be happier with this guided tour. It gives you clear instructions on where to go, park, eat, stop. Without it, we would have missed so many things, and we learned so much. I highly recommend it.

Awesome app. If you have kids, this app makes long scenic drives tolerable, and maybe even enjoyable. The stories keep them from asking how much longer and the Hawaiian music is a great soundtrack for the scenery.

Don’t hesitate to get it. This app is worth every penny. It’s super relaxing the music is amazing, works flawlessly. Definitely makes you feel at home on the Hana Hwy.

Excellent for New the Island Visitors. This app is great to learn so much about the island and history of it and a person would miss so much if you didn’t have the narrative as you go!

Worth every penny!!. This was by far one of the best tourist apps I have ever purchased. We drove the Hana hwy and back and loved every minute with the tour guide.

Brilliant. This app is amazing. It is a definite must if you are doing the Road to Hana tour. Filled with key spots to visit, explanations of what things are, this will make your trip that much more enjoyable. As well the history you receive from this team is unbelievable. It made this long trip go by so fast. Well done Shaka App, well done.

AMAZING!!. This app was the best! We loved all the stories of Hawaiian history and culture mixed in with the tour and music. The gps was on point at all times and seamlessly lead us on our journey. All combined made for an amazing trip to Hana. Would highly recommend (and already have). Thank you!!!

Definitely recommend. Used the Shaka Guide for both the road to Hana and the Sunrise on Haleakala. Both were very, very helpful, informative and improved our self-guided tours immensely!! Thank you so much Shaka!! Will be looking for future tours!

Amazing. We loved it so much! We could not have done the Road to Hana without it.

A must-have app/ guide for all of Maui. Our family literally conquered the whole island and learned so much about culture and history because of this app. It’s been the cheapest but most valuable purchase of our trip so far! Definitely a must-have app that showcases so many beautiful parts of Maui.

Big Island and Maui. Used the App for Hawaii volcano national park and road to Hana and Haleakala crater. The app gaveStep-by-step instructions for all of our visits. No need to do a lot of research in advance of the places that you want to see as the App is very informative and gave great suggestions on what to say. Excellent turn by turn instructions and lots of good information. Would definitely use this app again.

Loved it. We really enjoyed the tour of road to Hana, will definitely download more tours on this app

Excellent Guide!. This app is amazing ;) We have used it consistently as we tour around Maui! A must if this is your first time on the island. Informative, interesting and extremely helpful in finding all those spots that you don’t want to miss!

Super pratique!. Tellement pratique, seulement besoin de suivre les consignes du guide dans le confort de notre voiture. Un must!

Road to Hana Loop. Truly made our day more comfortable and relaxing as we made our way through the day. Took the guesswork and uncertainty that goes along with it away and enabled us to time our day including stops perfectly.

AWESOME APP. We spent 2 weeks in Maui (in fact we’re still here) and this app has definitely proven it’s worth. It is very easy to use, intuitive and has a very simple UI. We used every tour for Maui except the West Maui Coastline Tour and were never once let down. The tours include very easy routing that is GPS driven so if you lose data, no problem, the app knows where you’re at. Tips, information and locations that only the Kama’aina would know. Stories/Legends are told throughout your travels in a comedian and entertaining way as well as playing of Hawaiian and Polynesian music as well as some George Harrison!! Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this app. It was updated once while we were here so the information is very fresh as proven by at least one bridge and road closure. Stop at Aunt Sandy’s at MM17/ for Banana Bread and drive the entire loop! We have a Jeep but people were doing it in Camaro’s and Camry’s as well. Mahalo Shaka Brah!!

So awesome!. Found this doing a web search after my wife told me “you better study the book (Maui Revealed) good before we go on the road to Hana” Poking through a book and writing down directions - didn’t seem like great plan on a road that is known for cool stuff you could drive by and not know. So glad I bought this guide. Worth every single dime! The advice given, the history told as you drive along, cool local music and the split second directions like, “on your right .. that whole in the vines, ya bra, step through - it’s a lava tube” was dead on. And it gave you enough warning and even gave you solid advice about finding parking when you got close to these unmarked spots. The app helped find so many great sights! Super accurate working off my iPhone 7’s GPS .. no cell service needed. When we come back to Maui, we’ll defiantly do the other tours.

Best Tour Guide App!!!. I arrived to Maui unprepared for Road to Hana and decided to pick this app because of the reviews. I will say that after using this tour guide I was 110% satisfied. It was worth it! It tells you must places to stop, places you can skip for a later trip, stops to eat, restroom spots along the way, where to park, tells you the history of each location (plus storytelling) and it even entertains you with some more storytelling on the way back to your hotel/condo. Also I would like to mention that I was completely satisfied with the customer service. I contacted customer service center about 10 mins before I realize they were open and as soon as they were up an running I received a call back and this is even considering that I left no voicemail. I just purchased the Shaka Guide for Oahu (just arrived today). Thank you so much guys!!! You're a lifesaver 😅

Phenomenal!!!!. Hands down this was the smartest (and cheapest) thing we did in Maui. We had planned to just take off and drive the road to Hana, but by looking for just an online map we found this app. Skeptical at first but decided to pay for the guided tour. No chance we would have come even close to seeing everything we did without it. Yes there was a lot of stopping, walking and hiking but once we got to the final destination (most not visible from the road) it was breathtaking and totally worth it. Not to mention there is zero cell service on the entire road. Having the OFFLINE guide was awesome. We have only used this app for the road to Hana so I can’t speak for any other guides tours, but if their anything like this one you would be wasting time and money by not having it. This is the only app I have ever given 5 stars to. It’s a must.

Great tours- app worked perfectly. Our family, which includes three teenagers, thoroughly enjoyed this app. We did almost all the tours for Maui. The only one we couldn’t complete was the west coast tour because the road was closed for a portion of it. But we did complete as much as we could for that one. We enjoyed the history stories, the Hawaiian music, and narrator was interesting and entertaining. Download the app before you go and it will guide you through GPS. There isn’t cell coverage for some parts of the island so this app was perfect. We are so glad we purchased all the tours for Maui. If we go to another island we will definitely get the bundle tours for those islands too. The narrator tells you where to stop for sight seeing, hikes, waterfalls, swimming, bathrooms, food, etc. It is one of the best apps I have ever purchased. It was like having a local in the backseat guiding us around the island.

The tour was great!. I purchased this app while in Maui. I wanted to do the Road to Hana. The tours that they were selling were well over $150 per person. I have a family of 4. That would have been a lot of $$$. I purchased this app and away we went! It was awesome! The guide was great! Lots of helpful information, lots of information about the different things u will see on the way and the history of some of the things and places you will see! The guide comes on at the right times and tells you where everything is! We stopped and did hikes, went to beaches and walked to and swam in the waterfalls. What I liked most is you can do this all at your leisure! Note though, if you are doing the Road to Hana LEAVE EARLY! We also did the sunset and stargazing at Haleakala using this app. We did the hikes and went to the look our points!!! SO WORTH THE $$$!!!

Reverse road to Hana December 2018. I am so glad that we stumbled onto this app while looking for directions to drive the back road to Hana. The Shaka guide was extremely informative and provided great entertainment for the day. It was very helpful that he gave you an idea of what was coming up in plenty of time and let you know where to park and when. He was honest about the spots you have to see and the ones you could probably do without. The GPS feature made it as if you really had your own personal tour guide that let you explore when and what you wanted to. We enjoyed his stories and his humor. Our only regret is that we didn’t start our day earlier and we missed out on a few things after it got dark. I’d recommend leaving by 6am to get a full day in. You’ll never see it all but the Shaka guide really helps you have a great experience!

So worth it!!! Download BEFORE you go. This was definitely worth it, we thought we had our stops down but we quickly realized how difficult it can be to navigate and look for important mile markers. This not only followed our car the whole way through, but it told us when to turn, stop, or continue at key destinations. I also enjoyed how this app tells you which stops are absolutely necessary and which ones that aren’t so much. Nice tunes and stories along the way too! Most importantly, this app saved us when we were super hungry and didn’t know where the next food stops would be; its like it read our minds because just at the right time it told us where the next food stops would be! It also warned us about upcoming bathrooms as well! Bottom line: you lose service throughout Road to Hana, and this app doesn’t. It will save you as far as food, bathrooms, and all the extra hidden stops you might want to take!

Completely worth it!. So I'm so tempted not to write this review just because I almost want to keep this from getting out to everybody. This guide was so amazing! It takes you to all of the best spots and they really are great and unique spots. The guide is really great about telling you which stops are great or shouldn't be missed and which ones are nice but they're are better things to spend your time seeing. All of the best spots we went to on our trip to Hana were the ones recommended by the guide. We visited beaches and waterfalls that had nearly nobody at them. It was wonderful! It's also SO convenient not to have to keep a lookout for mile markers and turns and be able to just focus on the scenery. The GPS sync up works perfectly and the guide tells you when you're getting close to stops and are going to need to turn. I loved not having to worry about missing anything! Definitely can't recommend this guide enough!

Must have for any tourist. I was a little skeptical buying this app, even after reading the reviews. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a bunch of mundane info that we really weren’t interested in. Was I wrong! The best thing about this app is that it tells you what you can skip based on how much time you have and what stuff you really should see. We skipped a lot because we got a late start, but I still feel like we hit the highlights solely due to this app. My only change would be to make it so music plays throughout in between dialog. There is music, but there is also a lot of dead air, and the music makes for a more enjoyable ride. There is no cell reception or radio, so this app is also your entertainment the whole tour. Great job with info, excellent timing/sync with locations, and great additional info when you click on the point if interest. Well worth the cost.

Shaka Maui. I ran across this app accidentally, and after reading the reviews decided to download it. I had been to Maui before 3 or 4 times, but this was the first time for my daughter. This app is golden! Particularly on the road to Hana- which we did twice. This first time we did the entire loop around the bottom of Haleakala, and we stopped at almost everything suggested on the guided tour. The second time, we wanted to hike, and we had reservations for the black sands beach, so we just went to Hana and then back the same way. Both were full day trips, both were made much more enjoyable by the directions, commentary and music. We also used the Haleakala tour for our drive to the top and enjoyed that very much as well. I’ll be checking out the app for the other islands when I come back.

Classic Road to Hana. I’ve driven this road at least 15 times and never used the old CDs they sell or any other tour guide. I found out about this app and wanted to give it a try since we were driving with family members. This app was extremely informative, not only did it provide detailed information about the different trails, waterfalls and highlight areas, but it also gave you some history of Hawaii. The app uses the GPS and narrates from the point you are traveling. It stops when you stop for a break and then continues when you resume your drive. It’s very well done and the narrator keeps you interested and laughing along the way. We were all so glad to have our own tour guide and made the trip much more interesting than if we were to just make the drive in our own. I highly recommend this app. It is worth the money and will make your drive much more enjoyable.

Enjoyable when it worked.... When the app was working how it should, it was quite enjoyable. The audio part kept shutting itself off, though, and I had to troubleshoot and reboot it for about 1/3 of the way there and the entire way back on our trip. Thank goodness I wasn’t making the trip alone or it would have been impossible. We missed a lot of the stops because there’s no way to go back in the audio without physically turning the car around. When I installed the app, I took the advice of the pop ups and turned my location services on for the app and my roaming service off for the app. This is after paying for and fully downloading the “classic tour”. The location on the map was synced and perfectly accurate the entire time. The audio would fail to start during some of the points of interest that were clearly marked on the app’s map, though. Very frustrating to know we missed many of the stops and I missed much of the beauty because I was looking down trying to reboot the app for the hundredth time. We won’t be using this app again.

Flawless!. I don’t think I can gush enough about this app. I am a bit of a worrier and my family convinced me to do the reverse tour on the Hana Hwy. I was very nervous but I have to say, this guys soothing and friendly manner made the trip enjoyable. We were alerted to each point of interest well in advance so we knew right where to pull over. He calmed me on the rough road areas, telling us “just take it slow and you’ll be just fine”, and I totally believed him! At one point my daughter remarked she needed a potty break and literally a few seconds later our guy said, “if you need to stretch and use the bathrooms the next one is 10 min down the road”. There was lots of great music and Hawaiian history thrown in that really enhanced the experience. I can’t recommend this app enough. You won’t regret it. It was well worth the $9.99! We were actually sad to say goodbye to our Shaka guide at the end.

Great find. If you are traveling the road to Hana and back this is an essential guide. We purchased the classic option and it was perfect for us. we read other guides prior to arriving ar Maui but this is much better. It is GPS-based and knows where you are and let’s you know where interesting sites are before you get there. make sure you download the content before leaving as you will not have cell service along the way. Here are a few extra tips that worked for us, we used to Bluetooth speaker instead of the car audio, our car got confused during pauses and kept looking for other audio sources. We took 2 days to go up and back, what’s nice also is the app tells you how much time it will take to finish (assuming a 1 day trip) along the way and suggest when you can skip sites based on how much time you have. All in all, was a great purchase. Don’t do Hana without it.

Well worth the money. The Road to Hana tour was well worth the fee. Easy to use, enjoyable and informative. The guide’s advice was almost always excellent. As we did the drive in July, the waterfalls we saw weren’t that impressive but the vegetation and views were great. Interesting anecdotes/stories. It does a great job of keeping pace with your location and tells you what’s next. We attempted one hike that was much more difficult than we (and everyone we encountered) expected and never made it to the waterfall due to a minor injury from slipping on river rocks. Maybe we misunderstood the guide’s recommendation about that one. Only definite problems were my inability to find/use the Highlights for more info (more places to eat) and their confusing directions in Hana Town. But I’d definitely recommend this app and will use their others if I go to other islands.

A Must Have on the Road to Hana. If you’re like me, you probably did your research about The Road to Hana. You probably already know the spots you want to check out. So why would you pay $7 for this tour? 1) A seamless driving experience. There is no Cell or Data signal along most of the trip to Hana. You won’t have Google Maps or Waze to tell you when you’ve arrive at the spots you’ve picked out. The Shaka guide not only cautions you when a hairpin turn is coming, it previews what spots are up next and then tells you exactly where to park and the directions to the trails/view point. 2)Keeps you up to schedule. There are multiple times that the Shaka Guide asks you what time it is and gives advise on how to make the most of your road trip with the time you have. 3)Directions to nice viewpoints. I’ve done my research on the Road to Hana but the guide still surprised me on some ‘secret’ spots to stop by just for a quick photo opportunity. 4) History, Culture, Music. After Kipahulu, we made our way back, there are 2 hours of the same tough road to maneuver. Most of your party would be tired and most likely sleeping — except for the driver. Instead of driving back in empty silence, it was really nice to just listen to the history of Maui and Hawaii and some relaxing Hawaiian music. If you want the most out of your Roadtrip to Hana, get this app.

Amazing finds and value!. Thank you for the great tour! We were able to see things we would never have found on our own. We purchased the “Loop” tour. It took us 2 FULL days to complete. I would recommend booking a room in Hana as a midway spot if possible. That would save several hours traveling to meet back up where you left off. We only found 1 spot that wasn’t accessible because the neighborhood put up road blocks in fear of Covid spread to their community. I believe it was spot 55, Nahiku. Also, it is good to know that it is a 2 hour hike to the super big waterfall in same spot of the 7 sacred pools. If you are wanting to do that AND the pools, budget to be there 3 hours. The park closes at 5pm. Over all, we LOVED the Shaka app. We would do it again for sure! What an amazing value!!!

AVOID SHIP EXCURSION PRICE AND GET THIS APP!!!!. I seldom write app reviews but I couldn’t wait to write up a review on this app! I’m so glad that a goggle search led me to find the Shaka Maui guide to do the Hana road while taking a vacation cruise to Maui! The cruise line was going to charge $195 (per person ) to do the Hana road, but with a $70 Jeep rental, full tank of gas and packed lunch ( at a store we stopped at that was recommended by guide on app), we were on our way. The guide was amazing, providing great details, music and stories along the way, and recommendations on which stops to make, and ones to skip in order to save time and get to the places you really want to see. This was so easy to use. If you want to have a great time, save money and find the best things to explore on the Hana road, you won’t go wrong getting this app! It’s worth the price! (Uhh, did you see the fee the cruise line was charging??!?). PS. There are lots of curves on the road, but easily manageable!

Amazing. Worth every penny. This app was absolutely amazing and worth the 8$. We decided to do the “reverse road to Hana.” The tour guide that was speaking was great! It felt like he was in the car with us. We laughed at his jokes and even answered when he asked questions. It automatically plays as you follow the road in numeric order. You have the option to skip a stop and it keeps going. It also plays beautiful Hawaiian music during the off time. What’s even better? They’re honest! There were about 5 stops that sounded cool but the guide straight up said “don’t waste your time”. As you ride along, he even gives you history about the places you’re going. Not boring monotoned history, fun history that even this non history person payed attention to. He tells you when a restroom was available and when the next one would be. He told you about dangers and warnings. All around this app single handedly made our road to Hana magical.

A Must for Maui. We’re so glad we downloaded this app literally 10 minutes we set off for the Road to Maui, armed with only a typed list of what to see on the way, and well, Google Maps and Waze. Of course we were stupid to believe cell service was available on the whole route. Anyway I ended up purchasing the $20 bundle and it was just a bargain! We did the Classic Road to Hana and had the time of our lives! If RtH is on your bucket list and you want to do it your way, i.e. drive it, you can’t go wrong with Shaka Guides. One caveat is that I wish they would rate the hikes on a difficulty level because some of these are downright treacherous! Oh and don’t even try to leave after 11. We did and had to drive back in the dark, in the rain and on that road with more than 600 turns! Nonetheless, it is a must-do and we are planning on driving another Shaka tour while we are here!

Great tour for a quick stop in Maui. We used this tour during a 12 hour stop in Maui while on a cruise ship. The tour narration is outstanding. Gives you advice based upon the time of day whether you should do all the stops or just a few. We drove past Hana to the National Park which is the end of the tour and then took same route back. The tour is filled with lots of information. If you want a good Hawaiian history lesson, the drive back from Hana is filled with lots of great information. Our round trip time was about 7 hours and included a few stops along the way. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who is going to be on the island. Definitely worth the money. Remember to download the map before you start the tour as much of the trip has no cell service. Also, connect your phone to cars speakers for best results. We had a Jeep and drove with the top off.

Best Guide for Maui! (Full Loop). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! The last time I did the Road to Hana was when these guides were on cassette tapes for a car, and this app was fantastic! The amount of information was excellent, the energy and music for each point was silly, and the choices/recommendation was a great feature! I can’t stress enough to listening to his recommendations! This is especially true when he says it may be worth skipping for better location cannot be more right! Since we did stop at so many things, we did not finish the loop until the sun was WAY down. I wish the price was a little lower, but for the amount of work put in I see why it was a dollar or so more than the average loop tour. NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE MAP BEFORE LEAVING PAIA! If you do not download it before then, it will not work because signal gets super poor after Twin Falls and it will not work properly.

A Must-Have For The Road. Wow, what a great app. My daughter and I were staying in Kihei and wanted to experience the road to Hana. A couple mentioned that we should buy a cd to accompany us. I knew that there had to be an app for that. Since we decided to do the road “in reverse”, driving out to the Seven Pools, early, and then turning around and stopping at the sights on the way back to avoid most of the traffic and crowds. We started our tour at the seven pools. We loved the turn by turn instructions, the guide’s narration and the music and the history lessons. The app was extremely helpful giving directions on the spot, almost like having a local sitting next you saying “now turn right, now turn left”. We would have never found the Venus Pool without him. Because we were tight on time toward the end he was instrumental on giving us hints on what to skip. This was worth every penny.

Running late? App tells you what to skip. Gave best day on Maui.. Planning to just use google maps? DONT. Developers put their heart into this app. Features make it worth every penny. Firstly, without fail it works without any reception/signal/data and provides pinpoint, timely directions at every turn. Secondly, if you are running late (less than 10 hrs of daylight) the app even tells you what you should skip to optimize your trip. I got started late and the guides advice made it the best day of my Maui trip where I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything! Waterfall swimming, beach, hiking, food; I got it all and started the drive at 10:30am! And lastly, it feels like the guy doing the voice guide really cares about you, your trip, and the island. Gives an amazing tour, not only by telling you the stops, but with extra stories/history/music (told with Hawaiian attitude) all along the way. Constant entertainment with a friendly local.

Rod to Hana loop. This is a great app to use driving the full Road to Hana loop. The navigation was great is getting us exactly to each stopping point and the information given in each talking point is wonderful! The guides tell you about each stop on the route, but then also additional information along the way that filled the time between points of interest that were a little further away. We actually learned quite a bit about Maui and Hawai’i. It’s also nice to know what is coming up, what is ok to pass by and what is worth spending time at - as it took us 10 hours to drive the loop and we definitely didn’t stop at every point. I did a lot of my own research before driving the road, but the guides had even more stops that I never found doing internet research. I am recommending this app to everyone I know visiting Maui, Hawai’i!

MUST USE the Shaka Guide!. We HIGHLY recommend using this app for your drive on the Road to Hana. This absolutely saved our trip. The in depth descriptions, helpful recommendations and tour insights molded each decision we made over the course of our long day on the Loop from Kahului through Hana to Keokea. The audio guide would give us an overview of the upcoming site, waterfall or overlook, and then tell us exactly when and where to turn off. Our only small piece of feedback would be to know going into the long clockwise loop that if you want to spend much time (in daylight) at the Haleakalā National Park, you must speed through the first half of the drive in order to get there in time. We also wish we knew that Hamoa Beach would be the locals surfing beach, and would have liked to spend more time to there too. Overall, best decision we made was pre-downloading this app for our drive!

Love this app!. After using the Shaka Guide’s Road to Hana app two years ago and raving about it all of my friends visiting Maui, we returned with our 9-year old and not only used the Hana app again (they update it as needed which is so convenient), but went ahead and downloaded the rest of Shaka Guide’s Maui apps! Today we finished the Haleakala tour up to and down from the summit, and we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of information he shares all along the way! So easy to use, informative, insightful into local concerns and issues for savvy visitors to be aware of, and fun to have in the car to tour by ourselves as we are in the throes of COVID-19 right now. Honestly, we are the self tour type anyhow so we are excited to use Shake Guide for the rest of our Hawaiian island trips in the future! Keep up the great work and thank you for such an useful and insightful app!

West Maui coastline tour. This is my second time to Maui, first on this tour. Picked up the Shaka guide last year, for the road to Hana. It was money well spent. They want a lot of money to take these tours and I hate to be rushed. They tell you everything you will need to be prepared for it all. He said you need sneakers or tennis shoes for some of the hikes. I am a hiker and have no issues taking off my shoes, if I want put my feet in the water. He tells you what to be prepared for, what More can you ask for? Oh they need to add, BRING WATER. Other then that, they are awesome! Great stories and music to keep you entertained. And a WARNING for the one lane road you will travel on it. Be ready and prepared, it is rough (in the words of my girl that drove it). Loving the app, money well spent. I preach the app to all I meet along the way. Keep up the great work and thank you for the awesome, commentary to with the memories.

BEWARE: DOES NOT WORK. I had a nightmare of an experience using this app. We had done a bunch of research on the best way to do Road to Hana and decided to use this app. Drive and it automatically talks throughout the whole trip... great in theory. One problem is that IT DOES NOT WORK. We downloaded it to my phone the night before the trip and then a few stops into the drive it was working fine. All of a sudden as cell service began to get worse (which is inevitable), the app started to need to BUFFER THE TOUR?? After I had download it? Why was it buffering when I had it downloaded? What exactly did I download. Eventually it got so bad that it just stopped working altogether. After several unplanned stops to get it working again, we pulled off at a cafe JUST TO RESTART AND REDOWNLOAD THE TOUR. In the end, it still never worked for us. We had so much excitement built up for this epic drive and safe to say this app ruined the experience for us. Would have much rather shelled out $500 to have a reliable tour guide than to have a silent ride with this app. BEWARE!

Totally enriched our trip!. We were planning to do Road to Hana on our own and just figure out where to stop, and I decided to see if there were any apps that might highlight specific stops. That’s when I found this app and I’m so glad I did! We ended up doing 3 of the tours in this app - Road to Hana, West Mountain Loop, and Sunset and Stargazing on Haleakala! It was probably the best $30 we spent while here. The stops it takes you to are perfect, the stories and music add a lot to the experience (and we learned a ton), and the app was super easy to use. We also loved how flexible it was - if we didn’t want to go to a particular stop, it just kept going with us. I will recommend this app to everyone I know who is coming to Maui. In the three tours we did, we got to see so much more than we would have on our own! Mahalo Shaka Guide!

Best in-app tour guide ever!. I have not seen any apps that provide not only a step by step guided tour but also an experience that is unforgettable. The personalization of this app just takes it to the next level. Highly highly recommend! We forgot to download offline maps on our way to Hana but this app came to the rescue! It not only guided us along the way but also gave us abs enjoyable experience!! On our way back we were a little scared to drive in the dark but this app literally made us feel safe as we heard legends and stories of Hawaii. The best part was how it was constantly giving us guidance on driving safely and being mindful of others. Like a good parter! Last thing.. the accuracy and precision of this app and the to Ing was so on point, I could hardly believe it! So worth it!!

With so much to see this takes you to the best. Driving around Maui would be good without this guide, but it is GREAT with the guide. We were led to several hidden sights that we would never have found on our own, (Dragon’s Tooth on the west Maui tour, and an unmarked, free lava tube in the road to Hana) and when we talked to other people there they always said “We found this on a great GPS tour called Shaka!” “Shaka Guy,” as we called the narrator, not only gives detailed directions to the best sights, he also shares his deep knowledge and love of Hawaiian culture and history, all with enthusiasm and humor. The music is sometimes themed to what you are hearing on your tour, and sometimes just background between narrations. One suggestion would be to enlarge the library of background music which did get repetitive, especially by our third island! Worth every penny and more.

Amazing Tour!. This adventure was incredible! For starters, the scenery was great and the weather was fantastic! A few points to note here for new folks: do your research on what sights you need to book in advance, be time conscious, and plan your tour for a weekday or Saturday morning into the evening. My wife and I did 2/3 of these, but we planned our tour for Sunday and most of the food stops were closed. Nevertheless, we got to enjoy the black sand beach while getting the most out of our time from morning until evening. At first we were hesitant about using the Shaka tour instead of our playlists, but we were pleasantly surprised by the historical information and the energetic breakdown of what to see and what to do provided by Shaka! This was an experience of a life time and I will recommend this specific tour to anyone who travels to Maui!

Excellent resource for your trip!!. My wife and I bought the road to Hana guide tour and it was INCREDIBLY helpful! I won’t lie, I had to warm up to the narration because I didn’t want to feel like I was on the Disney jungle cruise or something but it wasn’t overbearing and gave really helpful advice for where to stop and when to stop. It also gave awesome historical insights along the way that made each stop much more interesting and fun to enjoy. 10/10 would recommend. Don’t forget a car phone charger though! You’ll definitely need it. The app screen display would freeze at times but it didn’t really cause any issues with the periodic narration. I would just have to restart the app to get it to unfreeze. I would recommend hitting road to Hana by 6 to beat crowds. Will definitely be worth it.

Can’t explain how great Shaka Guides are. My family is touring Hawaii for the last two weeks, and does anyone know how hard it is to get 8 people across 3 generations to agree on what to do each day? It’s been SO EASY for us to agree on the Shaka Guide apps though. We used the Maui—Road to Hana Loop tour and the West Maui tour. On Oahu, we did the North Shore tour, and on Kauai, we did the Waimea and Na Pali tour. ALL were outstanding, with super easy, well-timed navigation, interesting narration about geography, history, mythology, and culture. From grandparents to my 8yo daughter, we all enjoyed the humorous, intelligent, friendly conversation. The app was also surprisingly un-glitchy... really impressed and totally worth the cost for each tour. Especially when compared to the cost of guided bus tours! It’s like all the best parts of having a live tour guide without the time constraints and inflexibility!

Must Must Buy for Great Maui Wxperience. My friend and I toured Maui by ourselves with this app. We ABSOLUTELY loved it. I found myself driving with confidence knowing where and when to stop. The hidden stops were priceless and some of my favorite most memorable stops. I would recommend this to any one I’d know was going to Maui. The one thing I think would make this better is to know if the bathrooms are porta potties or the real kind of toilets. Other than that, wouldn’t change a single thing. Thank you so much. I also bought the full package with also yours and would strongly recommend it as they are all great and looked forward to listening to the guide. He was pretty cool and fun to listen to. Also music was awesome. Sometimes I wished it’d play longer but then didn’t bc I’d have time to talk to my friend between stops. So it’s perfect amount of music. Thank you! thank yOu!!

Road to Hana Full Loop. This Shaka Maui app is amazing! We didn’t plan much on our trip to Maui, and this guide was so helpful, especially since the Road to Hana can be tricky to do the right way! There are so many stops that you wouldn’t take a second glance at, but those were some of our favorite, secret spots. The directions were very clear, and we felt that we couldn’t have had a better experience if we tried. We did the full loop tour, which we would definitely recommend doing since you have amazing views of the ocean at sunset if you time it right on the way back. The only critique I would give is if you want to spend time at the National Park at the very end and see the infamous 400 ft Waikmuku Falls, the park now has strict limitations of closure at 5PM likely due to COVID-19 and the hike takes minimum 80 minutes if you are comfortable running on slippery rocks and possibly rebreaking your wrist. But, we did it!!! Otherwise hang tight brah 🤟🏼

We love Shaka. My Husband and I just spent most of a month on 4 of the Hawaiian Islands. Since my Husband permanently uses a wheelchair, most tours and beaches are not available to us so we rely on exploring on our own a lot. So often we drive by something and wonder what it is or maybe what it’s greater significance might be. With Shaka, it’s like you have a high quality travel guide right in the car with you. Literally, there are times we would see something and say Wow and 2 seconds later, Shaka would say wow and then explain what you are seeing. We loved the Hawaiian music between points of interest, we loved that this app is incredibly seamless— truly you set it and go and never have a glitch the entire day. It’s an amazing value for the service. Now that we’re home, we find ourselves missing Shaka and his corny jokes and laugh.

Loop of Hana. By far the best decision we made to guide us through our adventure! The app tracks you throughout the entire trip, even without internet. The guide takes you step by step to finding the hidden access points to the waterfalls, trails etc. he also is informative about the history on the island as you approach each stop. He was very helpful with guiding us on whether or not to stop at certain places - he will tell you to skip certain spots if you’re low on time or to turn around according to where you are on Hana. He was and the app were a blessing. We stayed half way at Travassa, my app was still on while we were walking and we were able to go on a hike to discover the Red Sand Beach. Probably my favorite app I’ve ever downloaded. We were extremely satisfied! :) thank you! You made our trip easy and amazing!

Best way to take a drive tour through Maui!. Had a blast going though both the Hana and Haleakalā tours with Shaka Guide. Great narration points throughout with great stories and legends from the history of these incredible places. Highly recommend for anyone doing the Road To Hana and Haleakalā driving tours! Here is some additional info from my wife: We LOVED Shaka Guide. I recommend downloading the tours you intend to do beforehand and looking through each stop. For Road to Hana, you don’t need to stop everywhere. Shaka Guide gives you some suggestions as to what can be skipped and what should be seen, but ultimately it is up to you and your interests. Also you should start EARLY! We thought starting at 7 am would be OK, but we had to skip a few places because of the crowds. We recommend a smaller car for this drive. We saw some really tight squeezes between tour vans and SUVs. Our Impala was even a bit large sometimes for the tighter parking situations. As an FYI, we purchased the loop tour but were unable to complete it at the Road around Haleakalā is closed for construction due to locations of imminent collapse. We were bummed that we could not switch to the classic tour for the ride back because there was no service. We really enjoyed the Haleakalā tour and highly recommend it. Way less crowded and shorter than Hana (which is still obviously a must do). It was beautiful. Shaka Guide offered great info. Definitely worth it!

Excellent replacement for tour guides. We used this App on our recent tour to Maui and Kauai islands and it was such a pleasing and enjoyable experience. The app is extremely easy to use as long as you have downloaded it in advance. The narrator has an upbeat tone and keeps you entertained throughout. It gives you advise about where to stop where you can skip and where you can park all in a very easy to understand voice instructions. Even when you take the tour in different direction it figures out which direction you are moving and provides commentary appropriately. You may want to study the app a few days before your trip so that you familiarize yourself. Throughout our trip we always felt as if we had a guide along with us ALL THE TIME. Great app and I would use it anywhere else that I’m traveling (if they make it available there)

An absolute must!. If you are exploring the road to Hana, this is the way to go! We would have missed so many cool stops if we had tried to do this without the tour. You also don't have cell service on most of the drive, so it would be really hard to find destinations on your own. The narrative was really entertaining and informative. We loved the stories of Hawaiian legends and the music. The only thing we would like to see done differently is there are gaps where there is no music or narrative, so it would be nice to have music playing in the background while driving. But other than that it was perfect! We did the reverse road to Hana which was great because most people drive the opposite direction, so we saw all the popular spots when they weren't very crowded and didn't have to fight traffic. It was a great local tip! And at only $8, you really can't go wrong.

Best App and Best purchase EVER!. I wasn't sure how this was gonna work as i got a recommendation from a friend. I tried it and the whole family was in awww of how well this app works. We hooked my iPhone up to Bluetooth and made way to Hana rd. Once we hit Paia the road right before Hana we tuned it on and hit start tour. The app works with GPS coordinates so it knows where you are and what instructions to give you. It's like the guide is right there in you're car!!! If the app goes silent for a couple Of mins don't worry it's still working and will pick right back up when it knows you are close to an awesome spot to stop. This app is by far the best for Virtual Tours!! If you are having second guessing please don't. The app works perfect and is so worth the money!! We actually felt bumbed when the tour was over, it was like my family and I made a new friend with the Virtual Guide and now we were saying goodbye. Haha. Anyway check it out. Simply amazing!!!!! Aloha!!❤️❤️❤️❤️

It’s Like Having A Tour Guide In The Car. The Road to Hana without the Shaka Guide would still be a great ride, but with the Shaka Guide it is awesome. Not only does it point out the areas of interest such as the waterfalls, but it also tells about the history and geology of the area. And it includes Hawaiian music to set the tone. The fact that it is GPS-based means that it doesn’t rely on cell service - it’s a good thing because in parts of the trip there is none. And you are warned before using it that you need to have a car charger - which you do as your iPhone battery will go down to nothing very quickly without a charger. We bought the five trip series and used three of them - and that’s a great deal. I suggest that you drive the Road to Hana - at least the north side route, but don’t leave without the Shaka Maui guide!

Best Hana app. We bought this app on our way to the road to Hana. We have done the drive before with maps and notes from online sources. But this was so amazing! The amount of information that you are given based on your GPS location was great. Tips of what is coming up the road and times that you will spend at each location helps you to decide if you need to stop, or pass by that particular location. We saw things we never knew that existed, and the history we learned on the way back was very entertaining. The only thing I would suggest is that the developer allow you to get both the options of returning the way you came-"classic tour" and the "loop tour"-in a single purchase. We got all the way to the seven sacred pools, and almost went back to town by way of the "loop". But buying another tour at that point was not a good plan. More flexibility in returning to town would have been nice.

Best $9.99 I’ve ever spent!!. Are you a little intimidated about doing the road to Hana? Have you heard of all the things there is to do, but only find partial information online about the locations? Not to worry....download the Shaka app, plug your phone into your car charger, sit back and Anjou the ride. This app was super informative, gave us the ALL the details we needed about the popular spots and a lot of secret local spots....and came along with us to guide us every minute of the drive. I was pleasantly surprised by all the history lessons jam packed into the audio tour. My kids and family loved it! I was able to share some of the stuff I learned while listening and driving, with other tourists on the trail. Made me sound like a very experienced local LOL. I recommend this app to anyone going to Maui...and the other Hawaiian islands, as they seem to have a version for each. Very much MAHALO

Transforms your travel experience !. Shaka Guide completely transformed our experience in Maui ! We have used other apps that provide tour guidance before but this is in a league of it’s own. Aside from being able to check out the attractions like a local , you get some history , mythology , culture and even some tips on the lingo of the land. Shout out to everyone involved in the creation of this app but enough cannot be said about the narrator’s amazing talent. We sometimes forgot that this was a voice coming out of my smart phone . He connected at a personal level that many fail to do even when they are with you in person. At the end of all our trips , we were actually a little sad and felt like we were saying goodbye to a dear friend. Very well done ! We will check out your other tours when we are back in Hawai’i.

Awesome!. What a great app! Totally worth the price! All the advice and stopping points were great! we skipped quite a few stops and still it took us a good 10 hours! We did the clockwise loop which was soo worth seeing! This is our second time on the road to Hana and the first driving it ourselves and this was so informative! We definitely wouldn’t have enjoyed as much as we did without it. Will definitely use it again! The only thing I could thing of that it was missing was the mention of the little huli-Huli chicken place on the red sand beach, that was a perfect 2nd lunch spot, yes 2nd because we also did a picnic lunch lol we like food!) we shared a plate and it was plenty! The little food trucks and mom/pop places are the best food stops (in my opinion anyway). Shaka was a great pointer to them overall! Download and go chase some waterfalls on the road to Hana!!!

Don’t think about it, just buy the app!. I have never done a self guided tour so I was a little skeptical at first, but I am not one for tour groups so I figured it would be worth the shot. I generally do a lot of research online and ask locals and compile tons of paper notes to bring with me. This was SO much better! It was like having a tour guide with you but at your own pace and you pick and choose what to do. I LOVED the stories and history it tells you along the way, most of which I never would have known researching myself! It made the trip so much worthwhile and filled with fun facts! I did the loop tour for Hana and HIGHLY recommend!!! Don’t just stop at Hana, keep going!!! Doing the loop makes you experience a totally different side of the mountain. I’d recommend having a 4 wheel drive vehicle though. I loved Shaka guide so much I just purchased another tour to do the west Maui drive!!! Highly recommend Shaka! Mahalo!!
