Economics courses are light and shallow in my view... but I just got started maybe after I consume a few I’ll learn something. But given I had to give my credit card info to look at courses my initial sense is disappointment
Great lectures in all categories by people that are good at what they do. If you have a hungry mind, this is a feast of the first order at McDonald’s pricing. How can you say no?
I’m always on the go. This allows me to learn while driving which is a great use of my time. So many courses and things to learn about and help me grow as a person. Well worth the investment.
I have been a Great Courses “investor” somewhere between 20-25 years. With plus I can be more selective and only listen to 2 out of a 24 lecture set. Thus I do not have to purchase the full set to listen to the selective 2 pieces. I’ve purchased over 100 complete sets. So I think I’m pretty sure that for me plus is plus squared
I more often find myself going to the Great Courses Plus over Hulu or Netflix these days. I feel like I’ve learned so much and I love being able to watch (or listen) from the app everywhere I go. It has made my commutes more enjoyable and given me something to think about throughout my day. There is such a wealth of topics here so I think anyone could find something that interests them.
Great courses plus is a wonderful concept with fabulous content. I prefer watching these to cable TV channels. App is great to find courses and vie lectures. Only flaw with app is if you download some lectures for offline viewing, they won’t start unless you have a internet connection which you don’t have on an airplane or in no data signal area. That’s the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars.
The great courses are interesting, educational, thought-provoking, and enriching. They simultaneously are relaxing and engaging. The topics are varied and well presented. The best value in entertainment by far - I highly recommend subscribing!
The wealth of knowledge, information and understanding available is amazing! Subjects from the esoteric to the practical. Professors of every persuasion, personality and style, but all credible and knowledgeable. Learn at your pace and on your schedule. Expose yourself to fields of study far outside your comfort zone. Top off your study of a field with these courses or let them be the catalyst to further study. Keep your brain active and young. Learning is an end in itself.
The only thing I don’t LOVE is the lack of closed captioning!
The courses are great! The app is not user friendly or intuitive.
Great content. Naming conventions off. ie ‘Great for audio” has video only content Not user friendly. Audio book like function would go a long way
The Great Courses Plus for me is like a new lease on life. The professors are across the board brilliant and I love being able to pursue a wide variety of areas of interest. Learning in my own time has given me just what I needed, a brain massage of continued learning without the pressures of classrooms, assignments and pursuing a set course of studies.
Wonderful range of course material, subscription model is great for knowledge hungry individuals. However the app has several notable short coming I do hope they address sooner rather than later. Browsing courses is very clunky, generally and even when save to downloads or watch list there is no practical option for sorting the courses. Streaming is terrible and I rely heavily on downloading lectures. And there is no course material available, which is annoying when it is referred to in the lecture. Otherwise, I’m happy to see this content available and would like to see it continue to be updated.
App hasn't been updated for over 12 months. Videos skip to next lecture on iPad Pro iOS 10. Thought I'd try the app since website doesn't seem to work on the iPad either. Please fix either one of these. Removing subscription until this happens.
I love The Great Courses plus. My only recommendation is to have varying speed button eg 1.5x
For 20 dollars a month I am able to access a whole range of entertaining topics. Much better value than having to purchase individual courses. Well done!
This app is incredible, definitely worth the money. Just imagine a university in your pocket. Done you can learn anything anywhere. 5/5 Brilliant.
Very good. Definitely something worth getting. I got rid of cable TV after getting this. I wish they had an modified audio version of this so I can just listen while moving.
I'm enjoying it. Definitely a good way to spend your free time.
Since the days when my Dad bought me Prof. Rick Roderick's classes on cassette, I've been right into the Teaching Company. Now, to have so much content on command, well, feels like a lottery win. Thank you Great Courses, good going. Never stop doing what you do.
I have listened to one complete course during the trial period. The content is very good but the app is lacking. 1. The app has not been updated for larger devices and is being upscaled. 2. I blew through my data plan! You can download video but not audio. When I’m in the car I switched to audio only format what isn’t downloaded. This forces you to leave your phone on using significant battery life. 3. When playing a lecture you cannot look at other content in the app. You are locked into the playing now screen. 4. One particular lecture session kept referring to a guide book. The app had no place to download or view this guide book. In general there seems to be a lack of written material to supplement the audio/video. Seriously though, the content is great!
Great courses but the app on my iPhone as well as other devices needs to be easier to use. It’s difficult to resume a course were you left of. Not as user friendly as Audible.
The content is great but the app is primitive. It does not support native resolution on iPhone 7 Plus, and audio downloads are not available. The player, for some reason, has to be in the front, making it impossible to listen why browsing the content. Barely usable.
I am a Molecular Neuroscience major at Loyola University Chicago and downloaded “Understanding the Brain” by Dr. Jeanette Norden and I am truly amazed by the amount of details in each lecture and also the graphical animations, which help simplify what she is lecturing about. In addition, there are multiple real life examples that we did not had the time to covered in my previous Neuroscience class at Loyola. This is amazing because now you have the opportunity to learn about specific subject, anywhere with or without an internet connection, and if you don’t understand a subject well enough, you can always go back to better consolidate it. I love it and can’t wait to finish this course and begin another one. Thanks to whoever thought of this idea. I used to buy courses on dvd from the Great Courses but this allows access to courses instantly. I love it!
I’ve had this app on all my devices for almost a year now. I love learning new things, and I really like not having to worry about exams or homework. I first saw a lecture by the Great Courses on Netflix. The lectures where by Niel DeGrass Tyson, one of my favorite professors. The format caught my attention, and I decided to look up the company. I found this app and immediately downloaded it. The app on mobile devices is pretty good, but just needs a bit more cosmetic touches because it looks a bit old. On the other hand the Apple TV app looks aesthetically pleasing but lacks features. I often turn on a lecture after a long day to sit down and relax, and more often then not I end up falling asleep. When I wake up I want to resume the lecture, but the player does not have the ability to scrub through and resume where I left off, or at least where I remember leaving off. Then when it gets to a lecture that was playing when I woke up, it doesn’t let me restart the lecture from the beginning. It will always start from the point I stopped the lecture last time. No matter what I do. I have to completely finish watching it in order to restart a specific lecture. The lack of this feature is what makes this app so frustrating. Sometimes I just want to go back and listen to a specific part of a lecture, but without the ability to scrub through a video and find the spot you want to see it makes this app seem very unplanned. Over all I gave it a four out of five because of content. If it was based on the Apple TV app and it’s features this app would only be a one out of five, maybe two.
I bought this subscription to listen to courses in the car while commuting. Unfortunately, it requires me to re-sign in periodically and does not reliably keep track of my place in a lecture. Since I can’t really fiddle with my phone while driving, I have cancelled and gone back to listening to great courses in the audible app. Audible actually works and if I listen to two courses a month, the price is about the same.
I have been an avid Great Courses user and fan for a number of years. The user interface for the base Great Courses material is really good. Unfortunately the same can’t be said about this app for Great Courses Plus. I like to watch Courses in sequence but this app makes it very difficult (and frustrating) to do. There is a history which is better than nothing, but there is no easy way to immediately start watching the next lecture in the series (unlike there is in the base Great Course material). The menu is not much help either. The rating is just for the app, not the Great Courses Plus. I trust with time, this app will be greatly improved because the material is outstanding
This subject was chosen by my 16 year old granddaughter as a focus for our hour long drive to school each day. She is now into her fourth day of listening and absorbing the information. I am fascinated by what I hear but can not focus on the visual presentation aspect of the lectures because I am driving. The evolution of language, on the other hand is a great contrast to ideas planted in my brain under the conceptualization of a Divine act in the dispersal of the human population and the confounding of languages. I will need to revisit this subject when I have had my fill of other evolutionary content relative to life producing chemicals of Mother Earth. This is a fantastic link to knowledge and I am re-education myself at a very late point in life; 70 years and growing!
I love The Great Courses Plus! However, the app is buggy and needs to include features like: - the ability to download audio only; - a sleep timer for downloaded content; - the ability to turn your screen of as the content continues to play (this is available while streaming audio, but if you download content—which, only video is available for download—there is not the option to turn your screen off and continue to listen to content. Some of the problems that I have experienced with the app are: - app lags or appears to freeze at times; - at times I have had a dialogue box appear advising me that the content I am attempting to access is not (or may not) be available in my country (U.S.). I hope that the app continues to improve because I truly love The Great Courses Plus!
I have been a fan of the great courses for years. I have a small collection of their DVDs and with life’s interruptions I must admit that although I fully intended to, I get busy or something comes up and I lose my place on the DVD and never finish the class. With The Great Courses Plus my place is saved and I can easily pick up where I left off. Even if I haven’t been studying for a week or more. It’s also a breeze to use my iPhone or Roku to scan through previous lessons in order to get to my favorite parts. I am not a fan of monthly payments but the content is excellent and the price is much less than traditional courses. In conclusion the Great Courses offers a wide variety of interesting classes taught by passionate professors, very well produced, and does well to capture your attention. All at a fair price. I will be recommending this to family and friends.
Great content. Learning is like breathing air -- if you're not doing it you're suffocating yourself. The app is good. It's a bit buggy sometimes when casting onto my TV. I feel more can be done for the UI interface to make for a more powerful UX.
