Song Sleuth Bird Song Analyzer App Description & Overview

What is song sleuth bird song analyzer app? Song Sleuth turns your iPhone or iPad into a bird song analysis powerhouse covering the 200 most common vocalizing land birds in North America. Developed by Wildlife Acoustics, in collaboration with world-renowned bird expert and illustrator David Sibley, the app records bird songs, allows you to compare your songs to known species, has a reference to research and learn bird song, and even suggests matching species.

Not just for beginners, the app also has features for intermediate birders who might need an identification hint or wish to study the included example recordings to take their ear birding to the next level. Advanced birders who don’t need any identification help will appreciate the ability to make and keep recordings for further study.

PLEASE READ BEFORE DOWNLOADING
Song Sleuth Auto-ID gets you started with suggested matches, but it is not perfect. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make the final identification. The app is intended to be an interactive and fun way to learn birding by ear. The more engaged you are in the process, the more we hope you will learn. Please read the following information on the app’s capabilities and limitations:
-The app does not identify simple calls, chips and scolds, only bird songs and more distinct calls that are characteristic of that species.
-The app does not recognize birds that are mimicking other birds such as the Thrashers and Mockingbird.
-It is ideal to get a recording of a single bird singing. The app can be confused by noise or background birds but tools are provided to trim and filter your recordings to improve the results.
- The app performs best outdoors with live birds, and not as well with pre-recorded sounds. Also, Song Sleuth automatically selects the birds that are likely to be in your area at the present time of year, so you need to be sure the birds you are playing are selected in the SPECIES LIST.

SONG SLEUTH HELPS YOU IDENTIFY SINGING BIRDS
Simply press the record button when you hear a bird singing and the app begins recording a few seconds back in time using the built-in microphone. Tap the record button again when the song is complete and Song Sleuth immediately shows you three most likely species. To assist you in determining the correct bird, you can listen to your recording and the example recordings of the likely matches as well as compare their spectrograms side-by-side.

SAVE, VIEW, LISTEN TO AND SHARE RECORDINGS
Recordings are saved in the RECORDING LIST where you can view the recording’s spectrogram, listen to the recording (and speed it up or slow down), add a text note, or view the GPS location. You can also trim the recording or filter the frequency range to remove extraneous sounds. Recordings can be shared with other Song Sleuth users via text messaging or email.

INCLUDES DAVID SIBLEY BIRD REFERENCE INFORMATION
The included David Sibley Bird Reference lets you learn more about each species. The reference includes Sibley illustrations of each bird, a description of each bird and its songs, zoomable range maps and a bar chart showing the likelihood of each bird’s presence in your area throughout the year, using Sibley’s extensive database of bird presence.

COMPLETE COLLECTION OF EXAMPLE RECORDINGS
Well-known nature recordist Lang Elliot and friends spent countless hours recording in the field to provide over 1,000 world-class recording examples of the included bird species. You can listen to a all the vocalizations made by each species or compare spectrograms to your own recordings or examples from other species.

SEE YOUR RECORDING LOCATIONS
Recording locations can be viewed on a satellite or road map or transferred to a computer and viewed in Google Earth. (Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.)

Very much appreciated. I begin painting watercolors of birds about a year ago and because of that I became an avid birderand I’m learning all I can about birds and now I’m learning to identify birds by their songs. I’ve only tried the half out for one day so far but within the first four times of using it I got two correct birds from their songs. I really appreciate having the spectra grams to look at and compare with other bird songs. It helps me remember the songs because I am very visual. From my experience using other apps to record Birdsong‘s this is by far the best one. The bird songs are more clear and concise and you have the option of clarifying them further. If I think it’s a different bird then the three birds suggested I would like to be able to input that and keep the recording but I don’t know how to do that yet or if it’s even possible. I also appreciate that you can change the state that you’re in and thereby receive indications of the most common birds in that area. I’m going on vacation soon to several different states and I will be using this to help me identify Birdsong‘s. Nothing is perfect but I tend to disregard the negative impressions I read about regarding this app because to me it’s a godsend!

No Sleuthing. I was very excited to be able to learn to ID birds from their song but have been disappointed in the apps performance. The process is straightforward and clever but the birds it IDs based on recording their song are way off. I have tried it about a half dozen times and it hasn’t come close. It seems to just suggest the most common bird in the area (like a robin) even if the song recorded isn’t at all like a robin’s song. Too bad.

Best I’ve Found To Date!. I love this app. I use it daily, right alongside the iNaturalist app. It’s a great tool for artists, educators, and nature enthusiasts alike. Extremely well designed and intuitive.

poor support - has only ID'd 2 birds correctly in the hundreds of recordings I have made. first the app functionality- if your purchasing this to ID birds by song save your $. In the hundreds of recordings Ive made since 2017 the app has ID'd two birds correctly. As such this app is only used to record songs and upload to eBird for my birdsong life list. second- app support. there is none. i purchased this app in 2017 for 9.99. when i purchased my new phone the app didn't come across and showed that I had to purchase it again. i contacted Wildlife Acoustics who referred me back to the app store. after two hours on the phone and repeating the issue multiple times to multiple representatives at Apple Support I was told to just purchase and download it again. When I did this it said you already own a copy and would I like to download it for free (tell me something I don't know). So if you make this purchase realize you will be wasting time trying to maintain your 9$ purchase on an app that doesn't do what it says it does. Once you realize that good luck with support!

Good!. Worked first time I tried it! Easy to understand and use. Opens super quick, which really matters when you hear that elusive bird call in your area. Thanks for the improvements as well.

Great I’d!. Enjoying this app quite a bit. I’ve identified at least 25 birds so far and the app has been a perfect help! Was wondering why I can’t Bluetooth the birds singing. I can only hear the bird sounds on my iPhone ? All music apps on my iphone Bluetooth perfect.

Song I’d is broken now. Used to live this app - simple and worked great. Now song ID is fubar. You have to select the species then compare it to the recording. Well if I knew the species I would t need to run the ID! Used to be simple record bird songs click run id and it gave you likely matches. Why they changed this is incomprehensible- app is largely useless now.

It Has Helped Immensely. I use this app every time I go out birding! I use it to help me identify the species - no, it is not perfect for that, but it usually gives me ideas and most importantly allows me to record, make notes and then analyze later. It is helping me learn and to get better at identifying the song/call myself. I also like how you can reduce the background noise for better ID.

Caveats. The app description clearly says it does not works for simple chirps, repetitive calls and other vague sounds. I think ignoring this warning is a reason why many commenters think it doesn't work. I've used it only this morning and only with what i would call songs, and it has batted 1000 so far (NW USA).

Awesome. I am an avid bird fan. I go bird watching, I feed them and have nursed them back to health. I love this app. When I’m alone and do not want to be with “people,” I find serenity going off on my on with my binoculars and my bird calls. Although I do find that some of birds on their list states they are uncommon or rare and they are actually here in my region of New Hampshire.

I’m forever hopeful, but.... This app just doesn’t come up with identifications that match my recordings. It will generally offer three possibilities, with recordings of their songs. The recordings are far different than what I have just recorded. It’s as if the app is just taking a wild guess. It would be absolutely wonderful if the app were right on target with the IDs. It would be exactly what I need, and I would learn a lot. I keep trying. But even with the clearest recordings, I get no help at all. I do wish...

Day 1 bird viewer. I do not know the first thing about birds& bird watching. Moving to the Volunteer state recently has me seeing so many new creatures of God. This has pictures, transcription of the sound onto words which might help me identify the birds and recordings of their cheery voices. Cheers y’all & many blessings.

Can we pls organize our favs. I like this app—it took only about 5 mins to figure out. I like being able to work with the recordings and isolate them and see them in comparison to others in the database. I love how beautifully the database is laid out, and I love browsing it. Can we please be able to save favorites to our own custom folder from the database so we don’t have to browse all of them all the time? Would stop me from having to use other apps. Would also be great if we can organize our own recordings into groups or folders.

Some perks worth having. Best part of the app is that the recorded songs actually call in the birds for you! I put out a sunflower feeder and a thistle feeder. The first day I got 2 pairs of cardinals flying around my area and sitting within 15 feet of me. I now have at least 4 goldfinches at a time. One day I was just playing all the bird songs and a red bellies woodpecker came flying in like he was late to supper! The ID is spotty but at least now I can see the birds that I’ve been hearing in the woods! And they’re enjoying my feeders. So much fun!

Think Big Picture. As a lot of other reviews have pointed out, the ID feature of this app is hit or miss. I’ve been using it for over a year now and have figured out how to isolate the songs I’m trying to record a little better. Even so, it’s accurate less than 50% of the time. However, this is still the best app I’ve found for recording birds. And has a lot of great features! - It records an a loop so that when you hit record, it includes the previous three seconds in your recording. This is huge! I’ve nailed so many more recordings that I never would have gotten without letting the recorder run for a minute or more waiting for the bird to song again. - It provides you a visualization of song to help remember it. - It geotags all your recordings - It organizes your recordings with file names including date/time and species name (if known). I know everyone is looking for a Shazam for bird songs. This is not it, but it allows you to make great recordings and keep them organized and sometimes it helps you identify the songs. That’s pretty good!

Black search bar. I love the app but I can’t see what I’m searching for cause the search bar is black and the letters are black on top of it. It didn’t used to be this way, but now I can’t find a way to fix it. It used to be white with black writing so I could see it really well. Please fix this bug.

Finding birds I couldn’t hear. While it may not be perfect it’s no worse than many birding ID by sight apps. It will at least get you going down a path to identify birds by their songs and calls. When it hears more than one animal it will give a few suggestions based on all of the sounds it picks up. It heard a gray squirrel, a toad and a chipmunk along with several birds on one recording. As the Brits might say, I was gobsmacked this morning when the only sounds from our deck was animals (no lawn mowers, traffic or other background noise). It identified a Pileated woodpecker. I’ve only seen a few pileated woodpeckers and had never heard one, as far as I knew before running the app. I was unable to confirm the pileated by sight, but have no doubt it was there after I was able to isolate its call from the other animals several times. Song Sleuth opens up a new avenue for finding birds and making an ID when you are clueless (or just have a brain fart like this old man has frequently 😁).

More miss than hit. 8 out of 10 calls are misidentified. I’ve recorded birds while looking at them, and the app doesn’t even have them in top three suggestions. In field it has identified calls as birds that migrated months before and as species that would be incredibly rare for this area. Being able to record and save calls is nice as is ability to see and edit spectrographs.

Used to be excellent. This used to be my go-to app to identify bird songs/calls. It was, for the most part, quite accurate. Apparently, a recent update makes it unusable in that it wants you to select the bird first. The whole point is to figure out what sounds I am hearing from which bird(s). If I can’t search for that sound, I won’t know which bird it is. Deleting the app. It doesn’t work the way it used to. Update: I was told the app glitch had been fixed. So I decided to give it another chance. We are sitting in our back porch listening g to all the birds. There is a mockingbird in one of our trees. We turned on sing sleuth to identify the other birds around. The mockingbird is loud and clear to use. The app is picking up every other bird but the mockingbird. So, we wonder why we should continue with this app at all, again. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Wow! Impressive. Sitting out back we heard a sound that we hadn’t heard before I downloaded this app and within three minutes you had identified this really uncommon Birdsong good work!

Great concept-doesn’t work. Every birders wish-just record the song and it IDs the bird for you. I tried it out on several birds which I could see or whose song I was already familiar with. In only one case was the correct bird even among the choices. I then tested it at home on recordings from Cornell Macaulay Library with very poor result. Even the format, giving a choice of three or four birds, isn’t really helpful. If I could see the bird to confirm it I wouldn’t need the app. This format works well for some nature apps like iNaturalist where you can compare their suggestions to an actual plant or insect in front of you or in a photo you took. I gave Song Sleuth two stars versus one as I did find the graph of the recording useful to help me envision the differences between songs in another birdsong learning app I have.

Great idea, but. While I have been a fan Sibley’s products in print and electronic , this app simply does not produce accurate results in my experience. I’m pretty knowledgeable about birdsong and have tried it on easy ones such as spotted towhees and chickadees, but it rarely offers a correct i.d. Also the fact that it appears to isolate such a small fragment of the soundscape perplexes me. I’ve tried expanding the analysis frame to no avail.

Amazing First Time. The first time I used this app it called in a male and female summer tanager within five minutes of first use. I went back the next day and the male came back. He was as close as seven feet. He wouldn’t leave either day. What a great experience! I had never seen summer tanagers before. A male blue grosbeak also came in to the tanager call. I am in South Carolina about mid state.

This Is Exactly What I was Looking For!. Now I am not an avid birder really, but I enjoy the wildlife drives at various refuge areas. I also enjoy attempting to ID birds when I see them. Right outside my window this dark morning, I can hear the bird well, but I cannot see the bird even a little bit. This ap is perfect for an enthusiast with my level of birding skill and is a whole lot of fun. I love the sharing and map features and plan on having my birding friends family download and install this ap so I can share my sound bytes. I was reading some of the other reviews about “not perfect” or some other such negativity. I would disregard these thoughts and reply with something like, “get a grip, this is an awesome tool and a fun ap”.

Works like magic!. This app is terrific. It helped me automatically identify the “birds” that would sing for hours after dark in my backyard —and they turned out to be Grey Tree Frogs! Without this app, I would have never figured it out.

Don’t remove features that work!. I like this app better without the “improvements”. The new selection box makes me select the particular bird song I’m interested in and then makes me select one of the possible matches. If I knew which bird is singing, I wouldn’t need the app in the first place!! We have a wooded area in our backyard which is home to lots of local bird. It’s very rarely that we can actually see the bird that is singing. And that is exactly why I need the app. Making me select the bird species that I think is singing based on short-listed suggestions defeats the purpose. I don’t see a way to turn off the selection box. I’m okay with the app making close guesses as to which bird species it might be based on my location like it did before but now it seems useless to me.

Needs more work.. It appears the song catalog the app uses might be biased towards recordings made in the eastern US. Even when I isolate the part of the recording to the relevant phrases, it more often than not suggests nonsensical species. Species with large repertoires, like Bewick’s wren, are especially problematic. I do like the sonograms created. Wish I could control, or even knew, what file format is used by the app.

Just rarely correct. I try and try to like this app, but it is so rarely accurate. I can point it right at a bird I know that is in song, and it was come back with chipmunk, squirrel, human, or some bird not common to the area. I keep it and try it because I hope it will work and improve. Once in awhile it does. I just think the technology is not there. I am surprised that it cannot ID more accurately from the sound map as many of these are cataloged.

Less than acceptable results. Maybe need to use an external microphone. You must be absolutely still in handling the phone/iPad. I tried playing songs from the app and listening with the app on another devise and it didn’t pick the correct bird. Sometimes I think there may be some database problems that need resolved. Have you tried testing as I outlined above, you should be getting near 100% success.

Worked first time right out of the box!. I’ve been trying to ID an ovenbird by sound for the past several weeks and this did the job right off the bat! When I replayed the song the bird flew into my area very distraught. I turned it off right away as I’ve read this can cause distress. I’m going to try it next on what I think is a Prairie Warbler. Love this app!

Upgrade made my app unusable. I’ve tried every thing I know but it keeps giving me a pop up error that I have to select bird species. Previously when I would record and ask for ID it was quite accurate. I’ve recommended the app to many people. I’ve deleted the app and will try to download it again to see that corrects the issue.

Helpful, but not flawless. This app is fascinating. The accuracy on identifying the birds is hit or miss, which is to be expected especially when there is background noise. Isolating the call doesn’t always work, but it does help. The most interesting part to me about this app is seeing the spectrograms. The I’m starting to see patterns for the individual species. I’m a visual learner so this is going to help me see and hear the calls to aid in identification. Also, saving calls for my local birds is a godsend. Birds seem to have a different dialect depending on region. Now I can save recordings of my local birds to compare. Don’t know if the ability is in the app yet as I am only just exploring this, but it would be nice if my calls could be added to the information page for individual species maybe on a separate tab, so I could quickly reference my local recordings. My only complaint is that the rarity of the birds is inaccurate. For example, in my area eastern wood peewees are considered scarce by the app, but they are quite common in the woods. Perhaps the app will get smarter as more people record bird calls. But it’s a good start. I’ve already spent hours and hours playing around with it and I absolutely love it!

Helped Me Identify An Annoying Bird. Since the pandemic began and people have isolated themselves in NYC a lot more birds are yammering away. There is one species that is being a “bird-hole” as it starts its call around 5:30 am every day and feels like its on auto repeat. I got this app to identify this miscreant and have so far was unsuccessful-probably because of other noises. However it has provided me with hours of entertainment as I listen to the myriad bird calls. Great job!

Not quite there yet. Crashes when I change a setting. The app identified pileated woodpecker alarm call as a bobwhite quail after careful selection of the sound on spectrograph. Identified mallard quack as a grackle. The only call it got right was northern cardinal. Oh, and when I try to display the FAQ from the menu I get a Not Found error. I will keep trying though, and look for updates. I like the way it captures a couple of seconds before you press the record button.

Imperfect but still useful. The ID feature gets lucky on occasion, but is very inconsistent: I wouldn’t trust an ID I couldn’t confirm visually or from other recordings. Twice now I’ve had the app make a correct suggestion (that I was able to verify later) on the first attempt, but then it wouldn’t produce the same result again. It’s still a useful tool, you just really have to do your own sleuthing. So far, it’s been a helpful and engaging companion to my birding.

Disappointing. I thought I had read good things about this app, but that has not been my experience. Sitting right under a chickadee making one of its two most identifiable calls, the app did not even give me chickadee as a choice. Similarly with a white crowned sparrow. Over a few weeks of trying to use it, I’m tired of repeatedly getting the choice of marsh wren or kestrel as two of the three options for a pretty wide variety of calls. In all that time I think I have successfully identified one bird reliably.

Solid. One challenge I’ve been having is trying to get the audio to play on a Bluetooth speaker instead of my phone. An external speaker would be so much better to call the birds with than an iPhone.

Mourning dove?!? I think not. First time I used it to record a OMG bird and it was 99% sure it’s a mourning dove. First I wouldn’t have needed help identifying that. Second it was no way close to a mourning dove call. App Deleted!

Great features, but birdsong ID more miss than hit. I actually like the app a lot—for its catalog of birds common to my area, for the compilation of bird songs/calls, and for the illustrations of the birds. The ID is flaky though. Often the app will suggest three birds to match my recording and, to my ear, those birds sound nothing like what I just heard. It is a convenient feature though to be able to toggle back and forth between one’s own recording and the suggested bird songs. What I’ve been doing a lot is recording a bird, then just going down the list of common birds in my area to locate the one I find that sounds similar. That’s how I matched a song to the Carolina wren for which the app suggested three other (and to me distinctly different- sounding) birds. In that way, I’m becoming more familiar with the various bird songs. So the app helps me in that way.

Please add more birds !. I like this app for homeschool. We like to look at the beautiful pictures and listen to their songs but while studying the 50 states, many many birds are missing !! No scissor tail flycatcher. No loon?! Please add more birds especially state birds. And many birds in our area can’t be identified correctly.

Imperfect Yet Awesome Birding Tool!. At first I was frustrated because the birds that came up with my recording did not match. But I still love this App! I enjoy playing the calls of the suggested matches, even if they are wrong. And then I use my recording to find the match myself. I assume this App will only get better and it’s so fun and a wonderful learning bird songs by ear tool. Worth taking time to learn how to use this and play around with the sonograms. The extra visuals of songs helps me memorize them and recognize patterns among species. Thanks so much for this terrific app!!!

Worked great. When I first downloaded it, it worked great. It could identify all kinds of birds in my area. But as of late, it’s giving me some really strange results. Such as squirrels, when it’s a fly catcher. Not only this, but the search doesn’t work. Perhaps I should reload it.

Really powerful and useful. Despite some odd UI this app is surprisingly capable , the spectrum analyzer tools are fantastic and I like that it gives you multiple suggestions in case you’re not really confident about your recordings. The audio sample Easter egg for recognizing humans won my heart.

Tech-No Geek. One of the best programs I’ve ever used. Ok, I’m not getting 100% id or even close. I get that it’s a tool and I’m just learning. However, the functionality is superb, the operation flawless and the Help section has a clarity and thoroughness seldom seen anymore. But the best part- going Geek now - is ‘seeing’ sounds, any and all. Anything you can hear, or feel, you can also see. The spectrogram helps see the patterns, frequencies and overtones from any vibrating source, from running water to Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in Dm on a pipe organ (I was having issues with an extraneous note being played). Thanks for the tool guys!

Quality Time well spent. I ve learned so much about birds in my community. I agree w others some songs u recorded may not sound like the bird the app identifies,But then again when I do listen to numerous songs a specie may produce, I am baffled that they sound nothing like each other.I’ve spent many hours watching the birds taking pictures of them with my zoom lens. I am now reading books about birds and still using this app to identify birds. Especially in other neighborhoods when I see nee species helps me ID them. It’s great for learning or a first step into Birding. I Purchased a four prong birdfeeder for my backyard which is squirrel proof. I’ve gotten anywhere from the common Cardinals, Blue Jays to numerous finches, Orioles and unfortunately several hawks. I live on Long Island NY..I will be visiting Caumsett park with its 1700 species of birds and spend the day w Song Sleuth. Another great feature is if you do play a certain song there’s a good chance that if that bird is near by they to respond and most of them come very near to listen. Enjoy!!

Literally amazing!. We once saw a wild bird in sour back yard and we really wondered what she was I downloaded this app I wondered through the things and I noticed this wild bird is a spizella breweri! This app is literally amazing! Now I can figure out different types of birds!!!

Recordings. Best bird recording app I’ve found but has limitations. I love the three second delay so that I can wait before I start recording. But it often requests me to rate the app when I first open it, so I miss getting the recording. It doesn’t open consistently to the same screen so that is frustrating also. I have a hard time with cropping songs, the crop tool isn’t intuitive. I also would like a way to crop and save a new version rather than writing over the first one. I don’t use the predictive function often and it’s confusing that I have to cancel to save the song and return to record again.

Life Like Recordings. I used the app to identify a bird by its song and it came back with the best match. I played the recording to confirm and the bird I was recording came over and sat right by me. Seems the app found the correct bird and the recordings are very true. I wonder what my phone was saying to it?

Newbie. Love, love, love this APP. We recently built our dream home in a lot surrounded by woodlands. I love sitting in our back deck surrounded by nature and lots of birds. I have enjoyed using the App to help me identify species by sound and characteristics. Love all the information. This homo sapien thanks you.

Great app, sounds, artwork. Bluetooth Speaker Unrecognized.. Great app, recently moved up to Montana. It’s been great to help me identify the birds in the area. I would have liked to have heard the sounds over my external Bluetooth speaker. But the app will not recognize the external Bluetooth speaker. I tried this on iPhone and iPad. I would have paid for the app. Thank you.

Love this app. This is a nice looking well done app with illustrations by David Sibley (Nice!),Range Maps,Recordings & more. Will update when I try to use it to ID a Bird by Song. Definitely recommend downloading to see what you think.

SPOT ON. I have been waiting for a birdsong app that would be easy to use and accurate to my area. Today I heard a male bird I knew to be some type of warbler and within a minute had identified setophaga virens with a David Sibley illustration and identifying remarks. I am losing my keen eyesight and so learning to use my ears. This app is a treasure!!

Doesn't work and Species list is useless. I can't complain much since it was free and I did enjoy the app for a bit, but then it seemed to go completely defunct. I recorded what ended up being a redstart and the app suggested the best match was "human, common." That was a joke right?

Doesn’t work very well. I just spent half an hour in a mosquito infested wood trying it Id a distinctive and often repeated call. No dice. It suggest some inane choices nothing like the call I was hearing.

Pretty useless. I imagine it must be very difficult to ID a bird song, because I can’t find any apps with good reviews. I tried this app on a very distinct and very common and very clear House Wren song. It came up with absolutely inane suggestions that weren’t even close, such as Goldfinch. Really?

Great app. Excellent app. Works every time. Really easy to use and very sensitive. Opens up a whole new world. Well done.

Awesome birding aid. Great experience to start - was able to ID two birds from prior recordings I had made in the field. Excited to record and ID more birds!!

0 for 20 so far. I was listening to a red-eyed vireo that was loud and clear... app said it was a great horned owl. Tried numerous others and have yet to come close. Maybe it's the operator?!?

Pretty much useless. Not even close. Good clear recording of a warbler or vireo at the top of a tree. App suggested either a killdeer or woodcock. Seriously???

Very disappointing. This app only accurately identified very common birds, like a Robin, which is great if you don't know what a Robin sounds like. I wanted to identify less commons birds. The app wasn't even close, offering suggestions that aren't anything like the the recorded sounds. This app is way too expensive for what it delivers. A complete waste of money.

Only America centric. Useless for identifying birds in Germany

No good. This app do not work Want my money back

Disappointing. So far, far from impressed. Many of the birds in our province aren't in the app, but that likely wouldn't matter since so far it has failed to recognize simple bird calls which are in the app.

Very Good. I’ve only used it a few times, but it’s a basic well working app that’s easy to learn how do use quickly. I’m not one that knows birds at all I was helping a friend can you download this app and was pleasantly surprised at how well it works based on reviews and the price I paid for it! It’s kind of easy to see that the developers motivations are in a certain place in that they do not collect data you don’t find that often.

So far so good. I’ve only used the app once but was pleasantly surprised. It identified the common birds on the periphery of the forest I was walking through. I like that you can listen to the recordings of bird songs, and connect the bird with the song. I’m pretty pleased with it.

Useless. I’ve given this app well over a year to correctly identify bird songs. 95% of the time it’s either giving me a result that I know is totally incorrect, or it simply can’t identify a clearly recorded song. Not worth the money I paid.

Don’t waste your money. Don’t waste your money.

Doesn’t match at all. After recording and trying to id five different bird calls, I had to give up on this app. Doesn’t do what it advertises.

Poor. Used 10 known bird calls and the app id'd one correctly. This was in a controlled environment. Pretty poor performance.

Worst app!. I’m an amateur birder, eager to learn what the new birds are I’m hearing in the country as opposed to the city. I needed an app that would identify for me what I was hearing. I can have a clear recording, run the ID part, and it gives me 3 birds to choose from, NONE of which sound even remotely similar. Waste of money. I will delete the app. Why keep something that doesn’t do what it’s supposed to?

Difficult to use and inaccurate. I was hopeful at first in using this app, followed the directions, but very seldom was given an accurate identification. Often told it could be one of a number of possibilities. I did better guessing and checking on ornithological websites.

Song sleuth. Doesn’t work. Gives same results no matter what bird sounds are going. All of the birds it would list are not even in my area, Northern Texas Panhandle!

Pay twice for iPad/iPhone. Guess I should have checked-“iphone app offered” means you’ll have to pay - no sharing. Most apps bought on an iPad are shared for free on an iPhone. NOT THIS ONE!!! You have to pay $10 twice. Ouch! My most common use would have been with iPhone. I just started using the app and I’m already angry!

Question about Birds not listed. I just love this app!! But I have a question. I have purple Martin nesting near by and I noticed they are not listed on this app. How can they be added?

App Freezes. Not useful because it continually freezes and can’t play song. Good concept but needs more work.

Great for beginner birdwatcher. Love this app! The hardest part for me as a bird watcher is hearing a bird call and not seeing the bird to identify it. Knowing the specific call is an important part of identification. This app helps bridge that gap for those who need it.

Works great. I know nothing about birds but it identified 3 birds accurately and I’ve only been using it for 10 minutes. 5 stars!!!

Fails to ID correctly way too often. I live in the woods where there is a lot of birdsong, making it difficult to isolate one song, (I DO NOT blame this app for not isolating the song I want), but when when I am able to get just one bird song recorded it still fails to ID correctly almost every time. Bummer because I really would love this to work!

Not really worth the $10. The spectrogram is very interesting and it is picking up all sounds, but unable to identify...or identifies incorrectly. This is even when isolating. Disappointed.

Neat features but highly inaccurate. Very poor rate of correct identification. Live the selection box to isolate the song but it misses almost every time. I had high hopes...

Shore Birds. I love this app but it would be nice to have water birds on the species list. There are a few ducks, one plover, one sandpiper but thats about it.

Homo Sapiens sound made me review. So adorable I gotta give it 5 stars...I also like the bird song samples — they’re helpful and high quality...and they’re nice to listen to.

Not reliable. I recorded several distinct bird songs and this app would not identify it correctly. It ended up being a hermit thrush. Disappointing because it is not common in my state.

After last update…. After last update it no longer suggests ANY birds for ANY of my recordings. Its as if the database no longer connects. Help!

Great app, but please…. Love this app so much and use it all the time to identify birds! But please please please consider adding hummingbirds to the catalogue of options!! They def have a song and they sing in my yard all the time!

Not helpful. The only thing about this app to love is recording bird song. But ID?? Kidding , right? The suggestions are sometimes hilariously off base and so far, never useful

Has NEVER gotten one right.. On the open prairie, with no noise except the air (3 mph wind, phone placed on a fence post) could not identify a Bobwhite literally 25 feet away. A red winged blackbird literally 30 feet away. Those are just two examples of how I’ve wasted my time and money. I keep trying but I will finally delete it because it is so frustrating.

Need video tutorial. I like the app somewhat. It has potential, but I wish you had a video tutorial. That way I could better understand how to use the app.

Great idea but not there yet. I wish this app was accurate because there is much to like about it. The ability to record a song and isolate it is excellent. I love the database of birds and their different calls. The problem is I haven’t had a match yet Very disappointing.

Buggy. Lots of bugs and no way to report. I received a black screen with green text that looked like a terminal screen.

Mockingbirds fool this app. I tried out the app on my local birds around my apartment. It does pretty well identifying most birds. Mockingbirds however, fool it every time. Even humans guess wrong sometimes when they hear one.

Slight learning curve, but great fun.. Once you get used to the app and remember to point the microphone towards the bird it works well. Great for use on hikes and camp outs. A hit with the kids.

Not impressed. I just got this and recorded a red winged blackbird outside my window to check how accurate this is before using it for unseen or unknown birds. I isolated the call within the recording and the app suggested that it was a squirrel? Really? I’m on the fence about giving it another shot or just deleting this app . Honestly, a squirrel?!?

High fail rate. Mere feet from a Carolina wren, common bird in our area, app failed to even offer that as an option. Seems to think a lot of things sound like a Baltimore oriole. Same result with an admittedly poor recording of a barred owl that app offered up as a heat horned. It got a Cardinal right, some of the time. I can’t trust this app to give me accurate results.

Love this. Fun to play with and explore bird songs and ambient sound with.

Can't i.d. much of anything. Simply put: junk. For numerous recordings of ovenbirds, all robust recordings it coughs up a blank page. It only got the red-eyed vireo song (again, a strong recording) once out of 5. Don't bother. Just amounts to fiddling with your phone. The IBird "Sounds" function is strong and reliable. Just listen and compare.

In wonder!. We live next to conservancy land and I never knew what sounds came, from what creatures. Now I am starting to understand what is so extraordinary right next to us. Thank you.

Doesn’t work?. I have tried this app on at least ten different calls so far, and it has failed to get a single one of them right. Clear, loud songs in quiet areas too.

Barn Swallow. I was quite surprised and disappointed that the common Barn Swallow (Hirundo Rustica) doesn’t appear to be included in the data. It really made me wonder what else is missing.

Laptop version. I have a friend who is a paralyzed neck down. She uses Alexia on her laptop. Do you have a download version of Song Sleuth? Thank you

Miss. The idea of the app is absolutely brilliant! However, it is highly inaccurate. Every bird I would try to record, would say squirrel and list birds that were very in correct.

Horrible. I bought this app despite some not-so-complimentary reviews. I’ve been VERY disappointed! To test the app after some trials at identifying birds, I played a RECORDING of the Common Loon (tremolo and wail, separately) and the app thought it was a human, a Barred Owl, or a Screech Owl. WHAT???? I want my money back!!

HATE version 2.3. I loved this app until update 2.3. Changing the interface completely ruined the ease of use for this app. We moved to the country and I enjoy using the app to identify the wide range of birds that migrate through all year. Will definitely find a new program now.

Failed!. I tried it on three clear recorded samples. None of the calls it supplied as matches was even close to the recording except in general timbre. Rhythm and pattern were WAAAY off!

Great App!. Wonderful app for helping identify birds! I love, love, love the recording feature so that you can record sounds and then identify them!

Horrible App. This app just isn’t what it says it is-tells you to pick a certain section of bird song-but there’s way to do it! Clearly too involved and not worth the time...I have better and MUCH easier apps to use!

Stopped working. When I first started using the app, it was pretty good at identifying likely matches for bird calls. In the last couple of days it can’t identify a most distinctive, loud and clear cardinal song.

Recording and sonograms great / ID features useless. I have tried the ID with and without a high quality external mic and the ID is never even close. I tried repeatedly with a close up golden crowned sparrow’s simple song with and without isolation and it doesn’t list it as a candidate

Love it!. I love this app. I always enjoyed watching and listening to the birds. Now I can enjoy them more.

Not easy. I’m technologically challenged and I found it hard to use. When I finally got my first ID, it didn’t seem to be the correct bird, judging by the calls that were recorded for those birds. (They didn’t match).

Simply doesn’t work. Of the many recordings I’ve made with this app, it has gotten maybe two right. I’m extremely disappointed with this purchase.

Very useful app!. Great for referencing different bird songs to help in identifying various species

Birdsong ID isn’t working for me. I’ve tried several times but the Identifier does not seem to be able to identify the sounds. Maybe there aren’t enough different bird sounds in the data base. It seems to have common ones but not the less common ones. I’m disappointed.

Never finds a match. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but it never finds a match, no matter which call I record. Even after isolating a song, there is no match. The visualization is very cool, but I have had no success with this app.

Just started using. I just downloaded and went thru the app and am happy with the various settings offered. I can see myself using this quite often as I enjoy the outdoors. More on Homo sapiens please. 😂

WASHINGTON DC Missing. It’s been a while since I saw a piece of software make this mistake but I guess this is still a blindspot: Washington DC is a US jurisdiction—it is not part of Maryland nor Virginia—in the Continental United States yet it is not available as a choice in the drop-down. Those of us in the 51st “state” would appreciate being acknowledged as a distinct option. Thank you!

Or very accurate.. I have recorded many birds while looking at them and this could not identify. Had a robin making noise that I recorded 3 different times. Each time it gave me 3 different birds, never the robin I was literally 20 ft from. I feel like it’s gotten worse the more I use it.

Not enough bird choices. App is very effective at picking up sounds and distinguishing birds from ambient noise but I’d give it 5 stars if it had many more bird song identities.

Not very accurate. This app is wrong more often than it is right. Merlin is so much better.
