The Detroit News Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

My morning pleasure!. The Detroit News app makes my day. Its format is completely convenient and content is complete. I can't believe this is offered for free. I am concerned that with the cutbacks recently announced by The News, that this service may be reduced or eliminated. This is the first thing I go to every morning. Please keep it up!

Great app. The new DetNews app is a Great way to "keep up to date" on the News throughout the day. Some of the new changes are good too, but I really don’t like having some of the best stories for “Subscribers only”. I DO understand the economic realities and the need to be able to make money and not give everything away.

Review. Let me goof around for a bit.. You know when you get used to something you get used to something so let me go for around… For a bit

Detroit News Great. It is nice to get news from around the Great Lake state so i am aware of what is going on back home. The Detroit News gives me a more though objective news than the larger Detroit paper. Thanks for a great publication. Fred Gage Kensington, Maryland

Erratic scrolling, barely legible text. I have tried really hard to not complain because I believe strongly in supporting local journalism. But the Detroit News makes it really really hard to not complain. Their app can’t scroll smoothly, and I am constantly being jumped back to the top or rows below because (best guess) the in-app ads don’t render correctly. I keep getting pop-ups to subscribe even though I’m a logged-in paid subscriber. And the dark mode renders links as red text against a brown background, making them all but unreadable.

It’s an decent app. I love the app itself as it brings me news alerts for Detroit. The only thing that I do not like is the fact that I will have to subscribe to a monthly subscription just to be able to read some news articles.

Excellent way to keep up on the news of the day. Since I have stopped watching TV news local and national it is a relief to have the Detroit News to keep me up on all that is happening.

Tigers and Red Wings. As a former Division I Hockey Player at Western Michigan University, and a lifelong Tiger and Red Wing Fan, I feel qualified to add my view. I do enjoy the reporting by The Detroit News of the Red Wings and Tigers. It is knowledgeable, interesting and insightful. With the hiring of Steve Yzerman as GM of the Wings, and the hiring of AJ Hinch as the Tigers manager, his insightful hiring of his coaches. I feel both teams will be markedly better next year. Daniel May

Detroit News-Excellence in News. Just started reading the Detroit News after decades. It is informative, reliable and insightful. It is also not biased and fact based. The opinion pieces are labeled as such and advise they do not represent the views of the Detroit News. Great read!

Great Michigan news coverage!. I pay for the app to get the Detroit pro team news. The articles are well worth it. The writers care about both the team and the fans’

Just A Mini Freep. I once had both the Free Press and Detroit News apps. I dropped the Freep app years ago because it just became unreadable for anyone other than an extreme left winger. Now the Detroit News is heading that way. I just want to read news. News, not opinion. I like reading opinions in editorials but not pawned off as news. If you’re a liberal, this is the spoon feeding you desire. If you are a moderate or heaven forbid, a conservative....you’ll be sadly disappointed. Manna for lemmings.

Glitchy, freezes computer, doesn’t keep signed in,. I have been a long time scribes to the free press. It works great. I decided to subscribe to the news also. It has never properly worked in months. I can’t get any support from these people ever. I have made it a mission the last few days to get this properly configured but I can’t. I have a computer degree and operate many similar apps without issue. This app and its support are the worst I have ever encountered. Kevin

News as I like it!. After downloading this App I was impressed on how easy it was for me to choose what I wanted in news. I have enjoyed the snippets or headlines which draw me to read the whole report. Thank you!

Like the news, dislike the new super obnoxious ads. The new video ads that pop open 3 or more times while reading one article are ridiculous. I’m fine with ads, I get wanting to push subscriptions, but interrupting reading a single article with the same full screen ad multiple times is just obnoxious.

Good News. I am originally from Wayne. I am retired military living in Ohio. The only way I keep up with sports and news in the Detroit area is with the Detroit News online!!! Thank you Detroit News for making this available!!!

Great way to keep up on news from my hometown. Having left Detroit years ago I enjoy keeping up with the city and it’s progress from the Detroiter’s perspective.

Sports Section Bias. I’ve been a long time Detroit News reader. I’m a MSU fan, with two degrees from Michigan State. I find that Detroit News sports coverage has many more articles about U of M than MSU. I would guess the odds are at least 10-1. Let’s get more MSU coverage!

Reader. Is there anyone on staff there that could find a Lion’s buyer? A new owner that would do what it takes to make the team competitive. The Lion’s have not been anything to praise since the Bobby Layne days. Not sure why the Detroit fans have remained so loyal? Pathetically disappointing. BIll

Detroit News - great info, lame videos. I enjoy much of what the Detroit News has to offer. Breaking news, local issues, MSU sports and auto news. One thing that is becoming to the level of annoying is the attempted use of video. DN your a news paper - you do that well. While you are likely trying to make your app and site more ‘engaging’ with video -much of it seems to be nothing more than iPhone videos of press Confrence or attempted ‘sports shows’. When I’m checking in I just want the news, read what interests me and then I move on.

Soo Sad …. Are used to love reading your paper karma but now that you need a subscription for most everything, I’m pretty much turned off to the newspaper. It’s much easier to go to another website and read all you want for free without being interrupted and trying to pick and choose between the subscription rate. It’s a shame because I think you’re losing so much in customer satisfaction and an advertising due to asking for the money I still read your paper from time to time but it’s dropped off 95%. It’s just not worth the time and effort to filter through to what you can read easily on 100 other websites. Thanks for all the years you’ve given me and I’ve been joyed your paper Jesse Perez

So much better. To echo some other reviews the News is so much more balanced than the Free Press which I found almost impossible to read- the journalists (if you can call them that) were just about their own personal feelings devoid of any facts - figures since they are a branch of USA TODAY - the News gives a good perspective and analysis. Enjoying the read so far.

Detroit News. I love the News and the Free Press! I remember when I was a kid,we would get the News delivered to our house everyday, and I would get yelled at because I would have have the sections scattered on the floor, because I was looking for the comic section. I used to make my mom so mad, lol.

Deception used in their subscription advertising.. Couple years ago I took them up on a promotional price for I think 6 months. After canceling for many months they sent me another invitation for special pricing - then proceeded to charge me full price. The content is generally pretty good. Just remain sour on the money lost on the continued monthly charges for many months.

Great App!. The app does a great job keeping me up to date on what’s happening in Detroit! Also enjoy the their articles about local businesses and everyday people who make a difference around town. Keep up the great work DETROIT NEWS!

Jon. Detroit News online is wonderful! I read it every day. Lived in Michigan for 50 years now in Texas. Don't know what I would do without reading your sports, keeping up with my teams. Keep up the good work. Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ GO BLUE

Excellent app with one overriding flaw. NO OTHER NEWS APP HAS THIS FLAW which I have reported several times with no response Excellent content and easy to use but one flaw found only in one other news app (Detroit Free Press app) makes using this app frustrating to the point of avoiding it. 1)If I am reading a article 2)Want to get additional information on a place, name, event, statistic, etc. 3) Goto another source anywhere else on the internet such as Wikipedia, Google maps, etc. 4) I am returned to the “Top Stories” page instead of the article I was reading I normal use an iPad Pro running the most iPadOS 15.1 but this flaw has been present for at least 3 months through several system upgrades

Poor screen stability. The app does not have a steady scroll. While scrolling down since the latest changes the app will just reset to the header again. If you try to slow your scroll it makes no difference. The screen is jerky and too sensitive. Phone is brand new, so don’t blame that. No other news or information service exhibits the poor screen stability The app is just plain full of glitches. The newest is the update that happened each time you open the app now never ends. The working circle just keeps on spinning. Deleting the app, I’m tired of you soliciting me to subscribe when you can’t keep the app running. Why would I pay for that. I already pay the government to not work, I don’t need another charity case. You work that you can’t sell newspapers anymore, you can’t even report the news without having to go to printing. Your reporters have horrible grammar and engage in solicitous click bait to sell their poor stories. I’m disappointed Detroit News. I WAS a fan but now I’m done with you.

Go to check text and the app resets to top. I have a habit of pouncing back and forth between apps a lot. And I haven’t noticed a problem with this until today so maybe it’s a new update glitch. When I go to another app mid story and go back to finish reading the app resets back to the top of the list of stories and I have to scroll all the way down to finish reading a story I left open when I switched to say read an incoming text.

Detroit’s Arkansas Connection. Jeff Jackson reporting from Arkansas love the Detroit News app I get all my updates sports traffic shopping I stay in contact with the family and we have plenty to talk about love you Detroit news and the city

Too many pop ups. There are way too many pop ups in the app. To read an article as many of three times I’ve had to swat off the annoying pop up ads and inquiries. I’m not sure if I’m paying to read journalism or if I’m paying to be annoyed by distractions.

Great paper. Pretty thorough news read everyday. Breaking news stories delivered to my phone usually faster than other news outlets. Don’t read if you’re looking for sensational made up stories. Conservative editorial page, but still examine all talking points of issues. Pretty surprising in this day and age. Really like the sports and lifestyle sections which are updated in a timely manner. I especially like the house envy weekly stories.

Great App but need to improve picture viewing. I have used the detnews app for at least 8 years. It’s great for keeping up with my home town. Especially my sports teams. I live in Chicago now. Only suggestion I have: please let me expand the view of the photographs that show up with the title of the article. Or add them again in the article itself. It’s disappointing sometimes when I can’t inspect those photos more closely. I use an IPhone. Perhaps that makes a difference.

Love my News. Enjoy reading the Detroit News online. Didn’t think I would as I grew up downriver in the 60’s enjoying the paper copies of both Newspapers, one in morning and one in the afternoon. I even had a Detroit News paper route for 5 years. Loved the smell and feel of the Newspaper, thinking I can’t get use to the online version. I love the online paper as I can it it anywhere and I even get new stories early, when they happen. Great paper, keep up the good work.

Loses its place. It’s unfortunate that if I am reading an article and receive a text, the article closes when I return to the app and takes me to the top of the headlines page. Many news sites save your place in the article you are reading if you need to answer a call or text. I use iPhone.

Love the app, hate the update. Thoroughly enjoy using the app and having access to great content. However since the last update I’ve been experiencing an issue. If I’m in the middle of an article and my phone lock screen comes on (e.g. if I don’t touch the screen for a certain amount of time), when I swipe back in the article automatically returns to the beginning/top of the page. Very annoying for longer articles having to go back through and find my place. Please fix!

The Detroit News. All the news you’ll ever need to know is right here in the Detroit News. Read it and stay informed. You’ll be glad you did.

Problem app. I have a digital subscription which I have no problem accessing from my laptop but continuing problems accessing through my iPhone app. It frequently stops me from reading subscription stories even though my account is up-to-date. I keep getting a “buy a subscription” message that doesn’t allow me to confirm my existing subscription. Frustrating.

Can’t read comments. Downloaded the app and I have a paid subscription, however cannot read the comments associated with the articles. Not sure how content is selected for the main screen, but there is a significant amount of old and repeat content.

An Ancient Mariner. I thank you for your allowing me to receive the NEWS digitally: A former Detroit area newspaper boy and High School whiz (Marine City) during the 40's and 50's) and former School Superintendent (East Detroit) during the 70's ( before the problems!).Always enjoyed the NEWS more than the FREE PRESS! How about that?

Love the news, hate the app.. The app is glitchy. I pay for the premium service and the app doesn't work right. I try to scroll down and it constantly takes me to the top sorry as ads load. I can never make it down the page. I'd thought the paid version gets rid of the numerous ads? Will be dropping the paid service shortly unless the app is fixed.

Out of town. Living in Florida but raised in Detroit, it’s great to keep up with what is going on in the Motor City. Especially good is being able to keep up with local sports.

Bought a subscription…can’t log in. I bought a subscription and can successfully log in on the website, but I cannot get this app to work. This app requires dropping some privacy setting that I can’t figure out. It complains about JavaScript, but I’ve tried enabling JavaScript and changing my default browser to no avail. The paper has great reporting, but that is useless if you can’t log in to get your newspaper.

All the news that fits "..we print.. I have been a Detroit News guy for many years because I like th,e Sports section. Now I Like the au tomotive news equally well. I haven't read the paper in the morning unless I have read the Detroit News. Mike Childers Toledo, Ohio

Every day!. I love having the Detroit News delivered to my tablet. I never have to go out into the rain or snow to retrieve my paper. Plus having the electronic version gives me updates and new articles as they happen. I don't have to wait until the next day for it to come out in the print edition.

Favorite Detroit Newspaper. The Detroit News is my favorite paper. All around Excellent coverage. In my opinion it gives better all around of the daily news. I have the e edition to keep up with local news no matter where I am. The Detroit Free Press works for Sunday news because that is the only paper available on Sundays!

Fair and balanced. Unlike Detroit's other daily, the Free Press, which is a liberal cesspool of racist and uneducated writers, the News gives a fairly accurate portrayal of events, without the typical liberal bias. They are sometimes hard on republicans, which is refreshing, especially when they deserve it. If you're only going to sign up for one paper to get Detroit's news, the News is it.

Like reading my local news. This app has all of the sections and articles I need to better understand what’s bawling where I live- both in the city and the Great State of Michigan!

Sunday comics. For the past three weeks I have been unable to view the Sunday comics on my phone app. I can only view them on my computer. Daily comics are viewable on both devices. All other enewspaper offerings are also viewable on both. Please advise.

News Review. Really like the new app that lets us " turn to any page " from the table of contents. The News provides a quick, broad and deep report on what is happening in Detroit, Michigan and beyond.

Not good. I hate the app. It does not pull up the latest paper at all and you cannot find stories that are in the print version. Couldn’t even pull up articles by famous columnists. Could not locate the Sunday paper (maybe because I have the Detroit news) and they seem to have dropped anything at all about the Detroit news and their subscribers but I pay for the Sunday paper. This is a terrible app and not user friendly at all.

Well done. App is great

Tigers & Wings. I check this each day. Tigers coverage is good but the Wings coverage needs a reporter who digs deeper and can be more connected to the sport's media.

Detroit good news. I like your app of Detroit news. Thank you.

Detroit News. The writing is objective and informative. They give you the facts and as a reader I can draw my own conclusions. Thank you

Review. Really enjoy the app since I don’t buy the paper anymore was a newspaper boy for the Detroit news growing up in the city of Detroit

Enjoy. I really enjoy looking at the Detroit News. Nice easy app. The only downfall is the fact that they have gotten greedy and want subscription fees to read anything of substance.

Detroit news. Great app. The recent improvements made to the app were great. Much easier to navigate.

This is a great up-to-date news source. The Detroit news provide me with up-to-date news all day long. I rely on it to know what’s going on.

Well Organized. Use the app to keep track of events in city if my youth. Easy to navigate and keep informed of latest news.

Needs work, no pics or comments. This app can use some work. You see a tiny picture with the headlines, but when you open the article there are no pictures included. Also, you cannot see the comments left by the readers like you can on the website.

Wish photo galleries worked. I enjoy the Detroit News app and was certainly willing to pay for content when requested. I have been disappointed that now photo galleries no longer work on our iPads.

Fine Mobile News App. I find the app offers an intuitive UI and only disagree with the choice of red colored links in dark mode.

Detroit News. It’s a really nice app, giving summaries of local and national news that can open to full articles. Thanks!

There are better news apps. The Detroit News was something to be proud of and trusted....NOT ANYMORE. Repetitive stories, too many articles that are opinions, but not labeled as such and overall lack of identity. Seems like they just pickup what other news agencies do instead of employing their own reporters.

Better than freep. The story quality varies between the two but this app is far easier to use and is easier on strained eyes to read.

Helpful. When information comes in it is nice to have it so handy through the notifications of this app.

Thanks for a quality read!. Excellent reporting, even though I wish you had a more informed and educated opinion department related to public education. Otherwise, top notch.

It’s great to be back!. It’s great to be back reading your fine paper again. I love the world news, sports and editorials. Am engrossed on with the state-wide coverage too.

Can’t scroll down after update. After the latest update, I can’t scroll down home page all the way. It keeps bumping me back up. Please fix, this is very annoying! Will delete app soon.

How much am I paying????. I finally but the bullet. I do like the coverage in the Detroit news. Promo said 9.99 for a year. Then something like that per month after a year. Signed up. Got charged and it says I’m paying 9.99 a month starting next month. And there is no way to figure it out.

Great News App. I live in Saginaw. Our news source is limited and mostly locally focused. This app gives me up to date news from around the state, country and world.

Quality journalism. It seems they cover the entire state which is what I want to see.

Glennie V. Detnews gives me all the news, sports and breaking info quick and straight. very credible news source for many decades.

Easy way to read paper.. This app is an easy to read the paper. At home in the iPad or on the road and in a waiting room on the iPhone. Just walk thru what you want to read.

Good newspaper. I enjoy this paper everyday. Thee only problem is I use a black background which makes anything red almost unreadable. Perhaps nice cool light might work better?

Great App. Great App, have not experienced any issues. Love catching up on the local news each morning. Really enjoy reading the well written stories.

Not a bad app.. Easy to read and ads don’t dominate or really interfere with ability to read an article.

Detroit News. Hesitated to purchase digital access. Well you get what you pay for or don’t. I am glad to have become a paying customer.

Integrity. I have always depended on the Detroit news for honest and informative reporting I have lived abroad for years and depend on the Detroit news to keep me tuned in to what is happening in my home town and with all my favorite sports teams.

Hardy is an awesome editor. The paper keeps getting better. Wish sports would start again though.

Ex-Michigan resident. As an ex-Michigan resident and Michigan State 2 degree alum, I love your sports section. Keep going on the video analyses because it gives great context for me as a Florida resident, since I don't get local sports announcers opinions

Better national and world news. Sports are great. But when leave sports for other stories I loose interest. See flip as an example of best

Subscriber content is getting out of control. I have no plan to subscribe to this, and yet, anything worth reading is deemed subscriber material. If this continues. The site visits will just stop. Ans like the physical use of the newspaper has disappeared. The entire Detroit News and Freepress will soon do the same if they don’t allow readers to read the content. Limit the amount of articles subscriber articles one can read in a month. But to make every article a subscriber article. I’ll simply get my news elsewhere. This company is already doing a good job of making itself extinct. You aren’t helping yourselves.

Detroit newspapers. Both the News and Freep are outstanding reads. I’ve lived my life in metro Detroit and have read these two papers since I learned to do so.

Detroit News. Detroit News app is excellent! Very simple to navigate, stories are well written. Enjoy reading eve4y day.

Waste of time with less features. Just deleted The News & Freep Apps because they are worse than using a browser. Can’t log in to comment, swirling circle of death loads and loads. Tired of being held hostage by a giant lack of effort. We have Michigan Unemployment, Whitmer & Trump already, don’t need any other worthless contributions to my life.

Can’t cancel without calling.. You apparently can’t cancel without calling. They are obviously making it as inconvenient as possible to cancel so they can steal more money from you. How in this day and age can I not cancel on the app. How unfriendly and greedy. Will never subscribe again.

Video ads are very distracting. I pay for a subscription and I enjoy the news and editorial content. The constant animated moving ads are highly distracting and interfere with my use of the app. It seems the Detroit New should give paid subscribers an ad free option.

Greatest destination for local news. Weather it’s sports, entertainment, politics or breaking news, The Detroit News never fails to keep me informed on happenings at the local and national level.

Fast accurate news. Read first thing in morning and get news updates all day long. Nice!

Stay informed. I don’t have to watch the news all the time. I can get important updates anytime!

Tired of videos and auto play ads. I’m getting sick and tired of being forced to watch more and more auto play ads and video ads. And I’m also tired of being tricked into clicking on ads by accident and then listening to all these tech and idiots brag about his popular their ads are.

Both Sides. Would appreciate more balanced attempt regarding conservative philosophy. Try doing the right thing by presenting the great things that are happening all around the country during this era of unprecedented national recovery. Best Regards Michael W Freeman June 21, 2019

Great news information. Best news service at my fingertips

Real news. I feel I get a much clearer news story with the Detroit News than most news sources. Thank you for keeping it real!

Keeps me up to date. I love the convenience of reading the News from the App.

RV's Review. I love the Detroit News. I used to deliver the paper, on my bike, when I was a teen and living in Detroit. It's nice to check in on the news in my home town. Keep up the good work and thank you for your app.

Random refresh interrupts reading. If you think of scrolling through the stories as reading the paper. This App randomly refreshes which is akin to refolding the newspaper and changing the order of the pages. The refresh settings option does not disable this function

Subscription is awful. I joined the freep with a subscription. Tried to join detnews and said an account under my email already existed. I entered my info from freep and it worked. However, I still don’t have access to the subscription articles. Tried renewing purchase ten times and nothing happens. Never was told if freep account works fir detnews and vice versa.

My on line paper. Mostly read the sports sections, but also enjoy the Top Stories.

Sports Page. I only subscribe to the Detroit News for the sports page. I was raised in Michigan, but now live out of state. This app keeps me up to date. I hate the right leaning editorials.

Reloads to often. This app reloads its content to often. I’ll be reading an article then switch back to the main screen and I lose my place every time because it reloads.

Buggy and Ad-full. This version is crappy. Full of glitches. I already pay for a subscription and should not have to look at pop-up adds every two minutes. Wish I hadn’t “upgraded” from the old version.
