IBird Ultimate Guide to Birds App Description & Overview

What is ibird ultimate guide to birds app? Behold, the most comprehensive and awe-inspiring fixed-price birding app for the iPhone, has undergone a stunning transformation! iBird Ultimate has risen to new heights with the addition of the 2019-2020 American Ornithological Union (AOU) standard, making it a true birdwatcher's dream. It is now 100% compatible with iOS 16 and Silicon-based Macintosh. It boasts a vast database of 967 species of birds in North America, 343 species from the United Kingdom and Ireland, 228 species found in Hawaii, and 169 bird species from the enigmatic island nation of Palau.

But this is not your ordinary digital field guide, for iBird Ultimate has an incredible new feature that will leave you breathless. iBird Photo Sleuth is powered by artificial intelligence using a neural network, which enables you to identify any bird from any photo you take or upload. Imagine the possibilities! With just a snap of your iPhone or iPad camera, you can unlock the secrets of the winged creatures that soar above us.

iBird Pro is a birding encyclopedia at your fingertips, with more information on each species than in any app. And that's not all, for iBird Ultimate offers both photographs and field-marked illustrations for every species. What's more, it has composite illustrations that highlight the important identification markings of the bird family, something that photographs cannot do. But fear not, as iBird Ultimate also includes multiple photos of every species of bird - including the male, female, juvenile, and subspecies - so you can see how they appear in real life.

But the real magic lies in Percevia™, the only parametric birding search engine that can turn anyone into an expert birder, with over 35 characteristics that can be searched, such as body color, GPS location, habitat, bill shape, and song type. The beauty of iBird is it always gives an answer; no more “bird not found” messages.

Another unique feature of iBird Ultimate is that no internet connection is required to use iBird Pro in the field, making it the perfect companion for birding adventures. And now, with its consolidated architecture, iBird Ultimate’s default North American database can be supplemented with databases of other countries, such as Hawaii or the United Kingdom. You can instantly switch between them inside the app, making it easier than ever to explore the world of birds.

But that's not all! iBird Pro offers a range of features that will elevate your birding experience to new heights. With Birds Around Me (BAM), you can see just those species within a radius surrounding your GPS location. Time-of-Day lets you search for birds by activity levels during the day or night, dawn, dusk, and more. And let's not forget Owls of Mexico, which includes illustrations with field marks, range maps, songs, and calls for 16 remarkable Owl species.

So, what are you waiting for? Version 13.2 of iBird Ultimate is waiting for you, with 38 new illustrations just waiting to be discovered. The birding world will never be the same again!

Clunky and Annoying. I should note that I have used this app for a few years and have found the information it presents as adequate, just above mediocre when compared with other similar field guides. It was probably worth 3 stars then. However, I just updated and now it’s even worse. I especially hate how the Photo Sleuth feature is locked in the top of the main viewing frame. It unnecessarily reduces the viewing space for the more important species lists. If it were a tool that would be used every time I used the app then it would make sense, but honestly I won’t ever be using it. If I wanted to, It exists in the left side bar. So, why can’t I toggle it off. I also don’t want a link immediately below the search bar that I will probably accidentally touch and be redirected. This is the clunky and annoying part.

In-App Advertising Inhibits Use. iBird has been my main birding app for many years, and over multiple editions of the app. Unfortunately, the latest update to Ultimate has added a button on the main screen promoting the in-app purchase of Photo Sleuth. While browsing birds, I will sometimes also see a second banner at the bottom of the page promoting the same in-app purchase. This bothers me greatly. I've paid a hefty sum for the app already, and should be able to use it without banners advertising paid features. The button and banner occupy precious screen real estate that in previous versions were showing more birds. The button & banner are in the way, and I wish I could disable them. I've even looked to find a way to revert to the previous version of the app, but to no avail. To the Developer: Please remove the annoying banners/buttons. This is an amazing app, and I have recommended it to so many birders over the years. Unfortunately, this update bothers me enough to tip me toward using one of your competitors' apps (Sibley) instead. Much as I love iBird, this is a step in the wrong direction. Please consider this suggestion.

The Best Bird App Gone Bad. This was a pricey app but it was the best so I didn’t mind paying $25-30 to upgrade to ultimate it. Then they came out with photo sleuth, which has been my go to and I think is better than Merlin Bird Identifier. Then I made the mistake of updating the app. Now everything I have paid for has been granted me “free” for one year and then is a paid subscription. Since I did not buy the app with the agreement of a subscription but as a straight-out purchase(s), it would be nice to have my purchase price refunded. I will miss using this app as it was pretty good. If anyone knows which birding app has the best photo ID, I would love to know so I could purchase that one.

Lots of good info. Great pictures good maps nice descriptions and lists of similar birds. Only the search function is a little funky. If you try to combine criteria it doesn’t work well ie birds in my area and then a specific time of day you lose the geographic limitation A minor complaint about an otherwise excellent app

Best Information and sound effects. I have been using iBird for several years now. I am impressed by the Ultimate version because it has more drawings, pictures, sounds, identification than ever. It is most helpful with birding. I recommend it to everyone interested in birding. Absolutely fantastic.

Amazing app!. This app was well worth the price, and is currently my number 1 birding reference. It’s much more robust than any of the free birding apps, and there’s tons of useful data available for each species, including diagnostic field marks, photos, vocalizations, distribution maps, and details on their ecology and conservation. They’ve even included Wikipedia articles for many species. I like that there’s flexibility in how the app is organized, and the “birds near me” feature is incredibly detailed and helpful for ID-ing unknown species. The free bird stickers are a nice bonus as well. Overall, it’s like having a full field guide in your phone, and for that I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

Great app. I really like the new features. The search works far better than it used to. We have occasional released birds that show up in the wild. Egyptian geese is an example. I wish these non natives were in the database.

Love this app!!. In my opinion, this is the absolute best birdwatching app out there. I can easily identify birds and having facts, range and sounds at my fingertips is amazing. It's like having my field guide with me all the time.

Terrible support/bad developer. Over the years I have had to pay twice for IBird because the developer decided to drop support for my original version and gave no path to upgrading otherwise. New version was little changed from previous version. Then developer put out no updates - not even bug fixes for 3 years. Now developer is back with a new version that has little that is new - except for a new subscription model to get customers to pay for same thing yet again. And again, no grandfathering (other than one “free” year) for existing customers. Fool me once…. Not going to be fooled a second time. Buyer beware!! Besides there are more reputable alternatives without the subscription - ones that actually receive timely updates. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!!!

Not consistent with iBird. IBird of cornel ornithology, is the data book of birding, and is very reliable. This app is not consistent with that data. I found a few birds in my area that iBird listed but not on this app. I hoped this app would be a more reliable source with more depth and features. I am disappointed.

Managing it isn’t a dream. Love what’s in it, if I crawl thru each one. If I recall I want a Pileated Woodpecker vs Acorn then easy. I just have to know their names BEFORE using the app… If I want all Woodpeckers, no putting that in the search and getting it or red black and white either. Probably not doing something right as this would be a basic expectation.

Rip off in progress. I purchased Pro years ago and upgraded to Ultimate. I also purchased Journal. I have supported this developer with my dollars. I understand that the developers had no choice but to consolidate. Having paid for pro I already had the app and just needed to download it. All good; right? Wrong! I also purchased ALL the add-ins for Ultimate. Time of day, BAM etc. Now the app is telling me I need to purchase them again for pro. Up until this point I understood- but now it appears this is just a money grab. It might be ok if there was a way to get in touch with the developer to discuss. There is not. Lots of great birding apps out there. I have always relied on iBird and not bothered with the rest. Now I think I will try Nat Geo or Sibley.

Very good app. I have been a birder for over fifty-five years and have used many field guides and electronic apps. This is a very good app but can be improved with a comparison feature. It is very helpful to see two or three similar birds side by side without jumping back and forth. Hopefully this feature will be added in the next update.

IBird ultimate June 2023 update. Awful!!! New update dropped all my notes with hundreds of local sightings etc. And it won’t let me log in. The last “help” recommendation is 5 years old. While I doubt it would be helpful, I can’t even look at it since I can’t login. This app is not worth $20 if it only works every now and then.

Lost life bird lists. Loved iBird ultimate for years until an update cause my life list to vanish. The data is still there but I have no way to access it. I have sent several emails beginning in May 2023 and have received no attempts of helping me to recover my lists. Customer service is apparently non-existent as all phone numbers go directly to unanswered voicemails also

Love It. I really would like to give 5 stars. Yet considering my experience of having my ‘Notes’ disappear multiple times I just can’t do it. Even a novice birder understands the importance of field notes. To have them repeatedly lost is unacceptable. Why even offer the Notes feature if a person has to keep hard copy information to avoid loss.

The best bird app I’ve found. We use this constantly. I love how you can filter for local birds. This is a really great feature for those of us who travel.

Awesome app!. Definitely a must app for any birder looking into starting or even a seasoned one, as well. No need to carry around an actual guide when you have your phone handy. Book guides stay at home.

Confused. I bought iBird pro iBird ultimate then iBird pro again not sure. The reality is I paid for and would like the apps that I originally bought to work and now the developer has moved to a repeat you must buy a subscription. Too bad I can’t access the original apps I paid for years ago. Bye bye

The best birdwatching app around, bar none!. I love this app! I use it every time I go out hiking and it’s amazing. The quality and detail of the pictures, the sounds, ranges, and morphs is amazing. I can find any bird with the specific searches and filters and it has helped me countless times. This is the best bird watching app around bar none. I highly recommend this app to anyone new through highly experienced who goes birdwatching. My only request is that they update it for the iPhone X to take full advantage of the larger and redesigned display as it doesn’t look as good when letter boxed. Thank you guys for such an amazing app!

Wonderful. This is the BEST app out there. We open it several times weekly, in our back yard as well as on birding trips. I have other apps but I don’t even bother to update them anymore!

Was a good app. Starting out, I loved the app. Then I two years ago I saw a glaring error in the information. After reporting it a few times and being assured of a correction, the false information is still up. The app has crashed and now I can’t close a window by tapping the x. 🙄

Worst developer on the App Store. This app has been abandoned for three years. I originally paid $30 for it. I had to fight tooth and nail to get access to IBird pro after they abandoned this app. Then they switched IBird pro, a paid app, to a forced subscription about a year ago. They had no grandfathering in - which is what every other developer has done when they switch to subscription. I don’t know why they revived this app, but I do not trust them and implore you not to waste your money on this deceitful developer.

Near perfect.. I would like the search function to be able to find a bird even if I don’t hyphenate or spell the name exactly right. But other than that, I love it.

A complete tool. This product is a powerful and complete tool. It is a very good field guide and almost as fast as thumbing through my good old standby. The song files sold it for me as there is no pocket field guide that can provide such a comprehensive feature. I can both ID a bird by song or, more importantly, I can use my iPhone to call birds in! An awesome way to get a closer look. I picked up the entire package of field guide and journal. I appreciate the ability to record my birding events.

In-app ads now appearing. THE DISABLE ADS BUTTON DOES NOT WORK. THE LARGE, INTRUSIVE BANNER AD FOR PHOTO-SLEUTH PERSISTS. This is a crock. Bought and paid for as an ads-free app and now an ugly, intrusive banner to try to sell some sort of "photo-sleuth" add on. No way to hide the banner ad once I decline the offer. Mitch Waite groups whines that it has to continue a revenue stream by reneging on the terms of the original purchase. *and* The app still does not include female bird appearances in the "similar birds" part of the ID.

Best App. This app is so apt. Easy to use and full of info for an amateur like me. It has helped me immensely in pinning down the songs of my local birds. My yard is a riverine community with large tree and cover and full of birds.

Outstanding app for experienced birders. I started with iBird, then got hooked into Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird app only to find the Cornell apps don’t work unless there’s internet connectivity. Most of the time I’m birding in remote places that are cell dead zones so the Cornell apps were useless. Not so with Mitch Waite’s iBird. It’s comprehensive functionality can be fully used when there’s no internet of any kind. The global science context of the Cornell apps is very attractive but since their apps don’t work in many places where I go birding, sorry! Plus, iBird has many more features than eBird especially if you include iBird Journal app functionality. Thanks To Mitch and his team.

Great app! Still missing some birds. I appreciate the updatess and the additions. The added songs and calls are a boon in the field. Still confused by the Audubon's and Myrtle warbler entries in the program even though they were not split by the AOS.

Loads of information. The photos and the song/call files are very helpful for this beginning birder. The search function has a lot of features, which is great if you figure out how to use it correctly, not so great if you don't.

Great App!. Has all info you will ever need for a bird guide and pretty well organized and easy to navigate. A bit expensive though. Need to integrate the journal in with this no need for separate apps.

Ruined my app with update. I wish there was a way to undo the update. This used to be my favorite program, I updated the program to get an up-to-date taxonomy, and now it has ads in it for their other products. Why is part of my screen taken up by a photo sleuth ad? I do not want this add on and I will never buy it, yet I am stuck with it on my screen. I am a working ornithologist for UC Berkeley, I used to recommend this as the best phone ID app to anyone who asked. Now I will have to warn people away from this program and this company. Update: despite what the manufacturer says you cannot disable the photo sleuth ad

No backup/No support. Update: I did hear from one support person who was going to check with the developers and try to find the list of species numbers. That was about a month ago. Used this app for years without any problems to keep yearly lists of backyard birds. The lists disappeared. The iCloud backup is a joke - documents don’t open correctly. Could only open them with Notepad - just a bunch of formatting and numbers. The numbers correspond to species on the iBird app - there is talk of a master list of birds/numbers - can’t find a copy because iBird site is down. Reached out to support twice - no response. Useless developers.

Poor writing. So I decided to purchase this app for a second time because as they say “we need to make a living “ or “your cars don’t last forever why should software “ of course I’m paraphrasing but you get the point. The description says Owls of Mexico and Time of Day are included. After buying and trying too use these add ons I got pushed back to the buy these window. I wrote the developers and I get their message that the description is incorrect and it should read these add ons are available and not are included. Pretty big mistake since the words or spelling are not even close and we’re working on fixing it. So buyer beware, the ultimate version isn’t complete they still want more money for you to use all their new technology. Greed is an awful thing for consumers!

Love it. Have been using iBird for several years. I have not been disappointed.

Always selling, confusing “integration ” of products, some nice features. Feels like this app is always trying to sell me another add-on. Also, the fact that multiple apps are required to have the full feature set is awkward. Journaling/record keeping should be built in to the main product.

Very difficult app to use. I’ve spent hours during the past two days attempting to get this app to work as functionally as expected. I’ve been unable to get Birds around me ( BOM ) to work with GPS, sign in password doesn’t work, app navigation is not easy, some screens stay open after data is entered with no way to close them without closing the app, .., I left the Peterson app for this, but find it extremely frustrating.

Amazing Quality and Incredible Value. Wow...That's how most people react when I show them the Ultimate!...Info, pics, sounds, innovation Thank you and Please keep doing what you're doing!!!

Good app but needs a little improvement. This app is a very good app and I really like it, but I wish it had a tab where you could see a list of locations locations where you can view the bird you’re looking at. Otherwise I think it is a very good app with useful information. I really like it. As, I have only been birding for a couple of years, it would also be nice if it had a feature telling me what birds in my area would be attracted to birdhouses and how to make my yard more bird friendly.

A clutch of resources. I bought the original iBird app over a decade ago and just re-upped in this new ultimate version. For me the app is like nest filled with eggs. Each one is a complementary source of info to help in identifying birds. You can look through and browse quality full color illustrations (with our without notations on marking), look at photos within the app, or birdipedia or Flickr (great for showing individual or season variations), get nicely parsed info (range maps, environmental status, behavior, etc), listen to multiple recording of different calls for each species and more. One of these info “eggs” may be just the one you need in a certain situation and the are all connected by a powerful search function that lets you set dozens of parameters using location, physical attributes, time of year, etc. And the best thing is that you can access all the core features without having cell or Wi-Fi access as the major eggs are all downloaded to your phone. So it’s great in the field or for just being at home and browsing visitors to your house or armchair recalling of neat species seen on vacation that you added to your favorites list. This is what mobile tech is for quality, searchable on the go information.

Backyard birding. Just started watching the birds and working on creating a little oasis. This app helped me identify who I am sharing my yard with and now some of my daily visitors have names since I can identify them as individuals.

Great app. Easy to take with you. Love that u can hear the actual bird calls. I enjoy that I can finally if Most of the birds I run across

Great Bird App. I use this app all the time. I love the favorites list and ability to listen to bird songs of your favorites in a slide show manner. Very powerful app packed with useful and interesting data.

In app adds are poor taste...can’t disable. Used to use this regularly, but am very annoyed by the in app adds for the “Photo Recognizer” - a feature I care not about at all. In a premium paid app? I saw a review where a response said I could disable; either “Show Adds” just doesn’t work, or the setting is very well hidden. Disappointed...

iBird Ultimate. This is a beautiful app. All the drawings and details are spot on. I have used the pro version for several years and wanted a few more features and the ultimate version delivers. I really love the sounds feature that is also in the pro version. I wanted the birds around me feature along with the rest of the features offered in the ultimate version. If you are a birder or just like watching the birds in your own yard, this or the pro version is the app to own. You won’t go wrong.

Keeps getting better and better. I’ve been using iBird products since 2011 and they keep getting better and better. I still take my Peterson’s in to the field but rarely use it anymore, iBird Ultimate will usually get me to the correct identification faster, and it integrates seamlessly with iBird Journal.

Great in the field. I've been using IBird Ultimate for 2 years and truly believe it's like having multiple field guides in my pocket. When birding it is very quick in finding the facts I need and identification with confidence. The pictures and photos in HD are at least the quality of any guide. Having the sounds right at your fingertips is awesome. It is so easy to switch from one category to the other many options. I especially like the ability to go to the companion iBird Journal to make detailed documentation and save it and return to the field guide with ease. Highly recommended.

Great App. Does everything I need it to. It would be even better if it included bird size metrics, more plumage illustrations and more information on habitat, but I love it anyway.

Ultimate Bird App. The efforts that have been made to improve this app are readily noticeable. Navigation is getting better every year. Keep the improvements coming.

Good information. I use this quite frequently. Lots of information on each bird.

Avoid this app. This app is a software horror show. Talk about buyers remorse!

Great app. I love the location feature.

Best search engine ever and really nice picture.. I have tried many apps for birding and this one is the best I have used so far.

Reasonable. Reasonable overall. However the identify descriptions are lacking at times making it weak compared to field guides. The pictures are tremendous often showing the same bird in multiple lighting situations, gender and even juveniles. These in addition to the drawings help in identification. The search function is helpful only if you know the name or general name for what you are looking for.

Great app. A great app, particularly the 'Birds Around Me' function. It would be very useful to be able to save the location in this feature since almost all if my searches are within the same region. Overall, I'm very impressed.

Great app. Learned birds from this app has been on my phone since 2010 and optimized for retina display. Great job

Bloated. Slow and over bloated

Great birding app. Love this app! Super helpful

Great app !. I always come back to a bird when I need to identify an unknown bird. The app has a few shortcomings, but it is, nevertheless, very useful. I just regret that the publisher has chosen to make it a subscription app from now on.

LOVE IT. This is a fantastic app, the bundle (ultimate, journal & Hawaii) is well worth it. Intuitive to use, easy to search with great photos and sounds, an encyclopedia in your pocket!

iBirdApp. Great app, easy to use, interactive and lots of details. Really recommended.

Good but buggy lately. Hasn’t worked too well with iOS 13, crashes sometimes and often bugs me to do extra things (rate, survey) while I’m in the field which is annoying. Search bar can’t be cleared any more since upgrade. Still the best app, but slipping for sure.

Misleading Price!. This is a very good app and has a lot of information. I'm giving it two stars because the top price says $22.00 then reading below says it's on sale price for $19.99 from $29. When I bought the app thinking I would pay the $19, I was charged about $26!!! This app is false advertising and the prices are all wrong!! Be very careful when deciding on these ibird apps like this one.

Birds near my location. I like to try and identify birds around me but I'm not an avid birder. This app helps narrow down who's who

Crashing app. I use iPad Air with updated OS. Ultimate crashes when I try to search. Any plans to fix?

Terrible. I just downloaded this version. I’ve used the simpler ibird app for years and loved it. This so called better version freezes, exits for no reason and just stops responding after just a couple of minutes. This version is garbage.

John from Calgary. Awesome App!

Lost My Notes. This is my favourite birding ap. but when I upgraded from version 9 to version 10, and moved my notes from Dropbox to iCloud, I lost 95% of my notes on observations.

Super bird app but needs a tweak. Love the BAM feature but needs ability to adjust radius in kilometres (mentioned this almost a year ago so was hoping it would be added in latest update). Also please make the radius adjustable down to 5 miles (25 miles minimum is a pretty big area, especially for backyard/neighbourhood birding).

Pas vraiment en français et j’aimerais être remboursé. Voir le titre

Great app. Has totally replaced my field guides in the field

Fantastic. I love this app!

Love this App. This is a must-have app for any serious or not so serious birder.

What a great app!. I have been birding for most of my seventy- one years and absolutely love this app. I love the many photos, the bird calls, the reference to similar birds.

French language issue. The application has a french mode but you only get the bird names and a small description in french. That if ok, when you use the BAM mode, you lose all french reference. This is just a small bug that would be nice to fix. Overall the app is excellent, very nice features, love the sound side. I am new with it so it should be nice to see how it will go when I get use to it

Très bien !!. Je ne l’ai qu’effleuré mais il me semble complet. Les noms taxonomiques sont en français c’est super ! Plusieurs photos, beaucoup de bandes sonores. On peut limiter le guide aux oiseaux du Québec

Superb Birding App. Just buy this app...it will make you a better birder!

RUDE and ACCUSATORY Developer. When writing about the app developer’s persistent demand for more money, he lashed out and nastily accused me of having written a bad review. I hadn’t even written a review at that point. Well, now I am. App is... - expensive - difficult to navigate - a money-maker if you fall for every add-on offered in piece-meal fashion - “supported” by an angry developer

The best birding app available. Purchased iBird Pro two years ago, it quickly became my preferred birding app. Purchased iBird Ultimate four months ago. Love it! Have the other birding apps, but don’t see any use for them. From their website: comprehensive identification, behavior, habitat and ecology information, hand-drawn illustrations, professional photographs, range maps, and playable calls in an absolutely stunning interface. This is why I only use iBird Ultimate. iBird was recommended to me by a birder who said he had tried them all. I have as well now. This is by far the best app in my opinion.

Tremendous Birding App. An excellent app for birders of all abilities. Everything from photos, to sounds, ecology, and behavior is covered - as well as everything inbetween. I particularly enjoy the link to the companion iJournal app, and the fact that the user can add their own photos and notes for any given bird. For new birders the Similar Species is likely to be a very useful tool, though it seems to have changed (or my memory of it), as now it doesn't do similar-sounding birds. Or at least not specifically, and that would be a great help to jumpstart the brain when migration first starts or if the user is just learning their bird songs, calls, and chip notes. All the way around an excellent tool that I use daily. Well done Mitch Waite Group!!

Fantastic reference. We have been using this a lot as we have all kinds of birds around us It helped us identify the Golden Eagle that we couldn’t figure out what they were Thank you for a great app well worth what ever the cost

Missing species. Dickcissel,

Fabulous content, mediocre app. The content is fabulous. All the birds, even very rare ones are accurately listed. There is a bird with two sightings in my state, 1974 and 1976. This app has that bird! There are many ways to search. All that is good. But the app itself is very clunky. Example -- I am glued for some reason to the search criteria I did for my very first search, which happened to be a starling. Every time I open the app, I see that starling. My search criteria default to selection of that starling. Reset does nothing in this app. It simply doesn't work. I have to pull up the search criteria and uncheck the 7 or so criteria I first checked to narrow down a starling. Only then can I select the criteria for the bird I am actually looking for.

The problem is with Apple. It is a great app, but Apple’s policies preclude the ability for the developer to upgrade this version. Do not buy this app if you want updates. Get the iBird Pro from the same developer.

Review. We tried other bird apps. This one is greatest one!!

Best bird guide ever. I've been walking around with Peterson's Field Guide jammed in my pocket since 1975. This App gives me so so so much more. Noble Proctor taught my ornithology class at Southern Connecticut State College. He taught us that 90% of birding is listening. What I love about this app is that I can actually hear multiple variations of individual bird sounds. Of course the images of the birds are stunning and the range maps are very helpful. This was the best money I ever spent on anything having to do the birding and believe me I have spent a lot.

My must-have for birding. Use it frequently to find info about birds and to help with IDs. ❤️ it!

Love, love this app!. I had the regular iBird for a couple years and upgraded to Ultimate a couple months ago. The "birds near me" feature is worth every penny. To be able to narrow the search by where you are and what season makes it so much easier to prune your search and figure out what bird you are looking at. With Journal you can keep track of what you saw and where. I don't carry a bird book anymore. IBird is so much more comprehensive and I have my phone with me anyway. I've recommended it to many others.

Great app, "birds around me" worth the price of admission. I am a total novice, but enthusiastic. The search protocol is very well thought out. The ability to quickly narrow the search by "birds around me" and the season(s) makes ID very manageable even for beginners. The visuals photos, info, etc are first rate and the maps are beautiful. There is a bit of a learning curve for mastering the various features but up front tutorials, help even the klutziest. I have several birding apps and books but I find myself turning to this first. Go for it, you won't be sorry, these guys have put together a first class app.

BEST bird guide book I ever used. Great graphics. Easy to navigate. I know know I jive 4 different types of hummers at my feeders.

Lost Checklists. After last update I lost all checklists. Uggh!!

A New Level of Birding. Using iBird has taught me so much about the lives birds live. My ID skills have increased tremendously, but even more importantly, I'm getting such a feel for how so many different birds go through their everyday (and night) activities. iBird includes every feature I could possibly think of, as well as plenty I didn't know I needed till I started using iBird. A friend recommended Ultimate, and though I balked a bit at paying more than a couple dollars when there are so many free apps available, I saw that it was worth the money from the first day I started using it. I've gone from being a beginning casual bird watcher to serious bird enthusiast in just a few weeks. I've gotten my husband interested in birds, as well as some neighbors who see me around with iPad and binoculars. You won't regret buying iBird.

A GREAT RESOURCE!. I love this app. It has all of the information that I need especially the detailed categories at the bottom of each bird panel. 👍🏻🦉

Disappointing. I am new to birding so maybe it’s just my inexperience but I have tried looking up three different birds and have been unsuccessful for all three of them.

Outstanding!. I love the photos and the sounds! I’m able to communicate with robins, turkeys!

Nope!. What is less than zero stars? There is nothing in this app you can’t get free. Don’t waste your money.

Works as expected. But not complete for Mexico. I brought this to use for a birding trip to Mexico. It works as advertised but is not complete for Mexico. Very glad I had a proper field guide. Would not recommend.

Love iBirds but still have some bugs. I've had the original iBirds Pro for years. I recently (when it came out) updated to Ultimate mostly out of excitement for the BAM feature, which I haven't been able to use successfully at all. It won't use GPS to get my location (doesn't even show up under location services list) and when I try to manually change, it just shoots back. I've also had birds that should show up in my search (forests, Texas, April, common & uncommon = GCWA) not show up at all, but if I add other seasons (December) they will show up. I'm sure this will be fixed with the recent update which I'm waiting on the download. Hopefully BAM gets fixed, too. Also, I remember previous versions of Pro having way more options under "sounds like" where Ultimate will offer nothing, very few or things that don't occur in this area at all. Otherwise, I seriously love iBirds and recommend it to everyone. Great app!

More ABA birds and splits. So you add owls of Mexico and want me to pay for them yet you still are missing basic new species and splits for the ABA area, Gray-headed Swamphen as an example. Otherwise this would be a 5 Star app.

Great for university class!. I am a Pre-veterinary student taking an ornithology course because I am considering specializing in birds. I already had a hard copy field guide... But this app is soooo handy! I don't have to carry my book around. I know I always have my phone on me for unexpected sightings. I also have to learn and memorize many many many songs which you cannot listen to from a paper back field guide. I also like this app because the information given is more organized under categories. Some apps are not as organized. I know I will use this app for the rest of my life. LOVE IT!

Love this app!!. Actually called a hummingbird to my porch using the sound effects!! Wonderful!

Good help for beginner birder. We put a couple of feeding stations in the backyard for the first time this year and have all sorts of beautiful birds that we want to ID. IBird allows fairly quick identification if you have a good look at identifying colors or traits. The connected Journal is easy to log the birds that you observe and reference back if you want to show someone the species in your yard. The biggest problem I've had is the colored illustrations often don't do a good job of representing the birds I see, but looking through the photos that show variations of plumage usually confirm the ID. It might be nice if the app had links to other internet sources of photos and bird information for the user.

Location services doesn't work. I had an older version of iBird North. Based on the sale I purchased iBird Ultimate. The auto locate feature does not work with iPhone 6. When using The Birds around me (BAM) feature you should be able to press the location icon in the lower left corner of the map and it should auto-locate your position on the map. Great feature if it actually worked. Pressing the icon does nothing. I enabled location services for this app in settings, but it still does not work. It does accept manually entered locations but that is a pain when you are out and about. Rest of the app is ok once you figure it out.

Useless. Had this app for years. Now my lists, favorites, have all vanished. App won’t even do a search. Turned into complete junk. Don’t suppose I can get my money back.

BEST BIRDING APP!. I lead monthly bird walks and have 3-4 full suite birding apps. I have been a fan of iBird from its very first app many years ago. It continues to be a reliable reference with pictures & drawings, vocalizations, range maps and more recently - field marks, nest & egg pics. With every new version, it just gets better with features that are intuitive to use. On our bird walks, I often find it easier & faster to pull up iBird Ultimate than to pull out my large & heavy field guide. It also pulls up a list of similar looking & similar sounding birds which is great for comparison. I also like being able to add my own journal notes too. They have just introduced a new version with Force Touch which I have yet to try. I can look up a bird from my iPhone's Spotlight Search screen! This is a great app that has withstood the test of time. Don't hesitate. Get this app; best $$ you'll spend on a bird app! - Julia

Ibird ultimate. This is my go to resource for identifying birds in my yard. It has great tools to help ID the birds that appear in my yard.

Awesome Disruptive Tech. annihilatus extinctus; Definition: technology which ends old ways of doing things. Particularly the ability to eliminate hefting large books around. All joking aside iBird is a fantastic example of mobile technology altering the fabric of our world. In this case you can clearly see the demise of the printed book, particularly old fashion field guides to nature and to birds. I'm very impressed by this developers attention to details and love the iOS 9 spotlight search. After using iBird, it's easy to imagine that someday, not too far in the future, children will laugh when you explain there was a time pages didn't sing (a bird's song), pictures didn't have layers of information you could turn on or off, and GPS wasn't used to tailor the contents to your location. The iBird app does all these things now and I can't say enough about how it opens the world of the bird to anyone with a mild curiosity about what makes them so magical.

Replaces my pocket guides. Great information and illustrations/pictures. The more I use the app the easier the navigation.

iBird Ultimate. By far the best bird app I’ve come across. I recently told my sister about it and that I’ve become a Bird-Nerd. I’m hooked!

Great birding app for beginners and more advanced alike!. I've seen many reviews for quite a few birding apps and people have their favorites. I however ad a beginner to the world of birding have been searching for a good all around app as I learn more about our wonderful feathers friends. iBird Ultimate has never failed to impress. I've tried a few of the Peterson guides and while they are great apps they just don't compare to the way iBird works. The search feature is phenomenal and the "around me" feature alone is worth the price of admission. Couple this with a responsive development team and a way to submit user photos to their database and you have a winner! As always I would pair ANY Birding app with Cornell's Merlin Bird ID since that uploads data directly to Cornell's Lab of Ornithology.

My Go To. Use this app all the time. Rarely use any other.

No future support for app.. Existing users of this app are expected to pay again for the Pro version since Ultimate is now discontinued. Developer could offer a discounted price for existing Ultimate users to convert to Pro. However they would rather just blame apple for requesting they consolidate apps and charge you again.

Download issue. The app will not download

Great app I use it all the time. I completely agree with Aerohead tw

Update by frustrated user. I purchased this and the previous discontinued version. Now I learned this version has been discontinued yet you continue to sell it. I refuse to buy further versions that will be obsolete within a year

Better than a book. Sophisticated search, illustrations as well as photos. Sounds. Just a super birding app

Ripped me off. I purchased iBird ultimate a couple of years ago which included photo sleuth. The update that just came out removed photo sleuth from my app. I bought and paid for it and they removed it. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

I am a new bird watcher and love this app❤️❤️🤓👌🏼. And use it everyday now!

Class Action Lawsuit. Is there an attorney out there who can start a class action lawsuit against the iBird company for stealing away this app that I had purchased outright previously, and that they now demand I pay for again in a continuing subscription form?

DON'T beg for a rating!. Ask me to rate your app, you're going to get ONE star.

FANTASTIC APP. Loved the photos and bird calls. Jim Boyle Austin, TX

Riley. This is a must have for any birder due to the sound library.

Best birding app there is. As a beginning birder that has tried several of the available birding apps, this is by far the best I have tried. After a short learning curve I find this app easy to use with many very informative birding features, especially the photos, songs and calls and the areas where the specific birds are found. I use this app on my iPhone in the field, which is a lot easier than carrying around a large field guide.

Great app. Easy to use and very helpful

BAM makes this all worth it. I've only had this app a couple of hours but I am quite taken with the BAM (Birds Around Me) feature which will create unique lists based on your location or a location you specify. You also have the choice as to whether to include uncommon species that have been seen in that location. You can select the 'season' or seasons you wish to include. Finally you can select the size of the area you wish to include as defined by radius from 25 to 150 miles How cool is that?!
