Boating Marine & Lakes Reviews

  • Money Pit

    By Big Red 12
I purchased Navionics South several years ago. It doesn't even exist anymore. No updates. My iPhone actually tells me it won't function. Then they come out with Navionics Lakes and Maps and want more money. Not me. Full me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.
  • Beautiful maps, rich info, navigation in name only

    By Ausi61a
I had hoped this might replace my old handheld GPS. It has some wonderful features but despite the name is unsuitable for navigation. You might say "don't expect to much from this tool and it won't disappoint you". Just used the trial version on a 45 mile passage in SF Bay. Maps were fast and accurate. Real time currents and tides are surprisingly good and useful. Local sonar charts have recent details not available elsewhere. I might buy it for this alone. I'll never leave my paper charts at home but this is so much more flexible and convenient. The route planning tool was also great, but falls over when you want to sail the route. A huge lack is you can't import waypoints. This alone kills the idea of using it to navigate. Real time navigation is very limited. Concepts such as VMG, Turn, Heading, and likely many others are missing. The interface to interact with a route while on the journey is clunky. You are left with eyeballing your track and guessing what to do. I'm waiting and hoping for OpenCPN, but in the meantime this is worth a longer look. I spent well over $100 on Blue Charts and won't be doing that again. But I'd really love to drop the old GPS into the chart table along with my back-up paper charts... That's not happening yet. If Navionics decided to live up to their name and create a navigation module in deed instead of only in name, buying this would be a no-brainer. As is, I'll probably keep looking for others.
  • User interface

    By Rjgarney
The user interface is terrible. It randomly zooms, makes a track, depth display disappears. Fix the user interface and this app might be worth something. Otherwise it's junk.
  • Garbage App

    By Boatrbob
Depth contour is garbage. Drove out to numerous "holes" on this app to find nothing. Bottom contour is not even close to what this app says! Don't waste your money!
  • Zero stars

    By AU34
If I could this app zero stars I would. I went to 4 wrecks in the bay and was dead on with the app when I dropped a buoy. After diving down we saw 0 wrecks. This app has 0% accuracy and is a waste of space. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP!
  • App draining battery FIXED.

    By Basstracker1965
I have had this app on my iPhone 6 for the past few months without any issues. Over the last few days, my battery was losing power and the indicator was listing this app as main source. What is strange is that background and location services were turned off at all times except when using the app. This app was a substantial high percentage away from the second draining app Facebook. For some reason the app is running background and location services 24/7 despite being turned off in settings. It's a shame I had to delete it because the service worked great when I used it on my boat. Hopefully, the developer will fix it or I might just reinstall it a few days from now to see if the battery drainage issue has been resolved. If it is better I will change my review but at this time I am only giving 1 star because I paid for it and now can't use it. UPDATE: deleting the app and reinstalling has fixed this issue. I am glad because it is a great tool out on the water. Really helpful when I am planning to fish new lakes and pick out potential spots to cover water.
  • Its ok.

    By erikfig1
Cannot share markers or route so fellow boaters can open on their end. It only send them a USELESS screenshot. Not worth what they ask for the app.
  • Stopped working.

    By hsi88
Used to work. Now gets stuck on promotional screen to trial new version. No way around it. Not what I signed up for. Will simply remove.
  • Very Reliable

    By OB1974
I've used this for my first year of boating on Puget Sound and found it highly accurate and very reliable. I have a suction clip for the phone which hooks to the dash and I also plug in the phone charger while boating since it will use a lot of battery during a five hour trip. I love how it provides me with a trail to follow back to the launch, I can plot trips, check the tides and weather and have a history of my trips that I can email to friends if I want. This is my favorite app. If I buy a larger boat in the future with an in-dash gps, this will be my first choice app. A friend of mine was fishing in Puget Sound last year on his friends larger boat. His friends Garmin failed at a critical time when the fog rolled in. My friend happened to launch his Navionics app before the trip and it guided them back to shore safely, avoiding rocks, land masses, etc. you can't go wrong with this app.
  • Disappointed

    By PinecrestJim
This app used to be free. They got me when I recently upgraded all apps on the iPhone. Now you are forced to purchase a subscription. While not expensive at $10, it's a big disappointment.

  • Problems fixed

    By Chichiflys
The previous version wasn't working on my iPhone 6s. So the folks at Navionics contacted me (or I contacted them, can't remember) and they offered seeveral options to fix the problem. After one or two attempts they helped me get it working again (just like it used to). Now this recent version also works great. Thanks! Really impressed with the product support - you don't see tha too often these days.
