Des Moines Register Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Informative. Good information and released in a timely manner. I don’t stay logged in though on my phone and it drives me crazy. I’m logged in and then all of a sudden it will tell me I just have 6 free articles. I would like it to be more user-friendly, sometimes I click the app, sometimes I click an article from Facebook or Twitter. It doesn’t always work.

Never works, too many ads. I have a paid subscription. Always times out when I try to log in. Full of ads even if you have a paid subscription. Notifications you ask? Maybe if you want to know score of 1-A pointless middle school sports. I wish there was another option.

App has been changed and now subscribers get bombarded with pop-ups to subscribe!. I am VERY unhappy about how this app has changed! I have been a long-time (over 10 years) subscriber and this app only recently has done this! There is no support available to address this issue either! I am close to removing the app all together!

Smooth app. Easy to navigate, lots of options

Just okay. Slow with news alerts Doesn’t honor selections of type of news wanted Lots of ads even as paid subscriber Doesn’t honor subscription and tries to limit articles Not well developed, supported, etc. better luck with other news apps

Up to date and accurate!. It’s great getting the Register on my cell. I can read factual reporting. I enjoy getting alerts of breaking news and weather. It is the best of both worlds. Welcome to the “real” world!

Suddenly extremely slow to load. App has never been anything spectacular, but at least it worked for getting Des Moines Register news coverage. However, around a week ago it started taking a loooong time to load the list of articles every time I open the app. Sometimes it wouldn’t load at all. Something seems to have changed that caused the performance to go from a very vast/instant load to a long delay that often makes the app unusable.

A fan for years. I’ve been a fan of the Des Moines Register for many years. It’s a new source I can trust. The Des Moines Register digs deeper into the stories than the online services.

Easy way to get local news on mobile. Easy to check up on the latest stories from my phone (which means from anywhere). The format and interface of the app is intuitive and easy to use. One of the best news sources in Iowa.

Des Moines Register’s lousy app. Your app won’t let me sign in about 50% of time. The screen won’t enlarge without being blurry half the time. Just a real poor use of time and energy. I plan to drop my subscription. This used to be a quality newspaper, and has just gone downhill over the past few years.

Poor App. This app is clumsy at best and keeps asking for renewal though I have done that—almost every time I log on. So, to read the articles, I have a 5 minute navigation through strange pages. Sometimes I don’t get on at all. I also am now being directed to Gannett since I also have another Gannett digital subscription. I think I get quicker information from Google so likely I’ll quit this subscription.

Average at best.. Average at best. Weak design and organizationally confused. Almost all photography exactly same size and shape. Looks as if they have forgotten design needs altogether. Must look all over site for anything other than general news and headlines. I feel like they designed one website to fit every single paper in the corporation. Too bad too, quality but ever shrinking staff producing good news product.

Des Moines subscriber. This App is the worst newspaper app on my phone! I can’t enter the app even when I put in my email address & password. It says I have an account but it won’t me in unless I use Facebook. Finally I go the App Store daily & can read through the app in the App Store until I hit the limit for the app. Even when I attempt to sign in it won’t allow me full unlimited access despite being a delivery subscriber for a decade! I can read newspapers from around the world that I subscribe to, but not the Des Moines Register!

Efficient app, works well. I particularly like the Catch Up feature, new articles since my last visit to the app

Read the Print Edition. A while back I received an email from the Register that offered a choice of ways to view the newspaper. I selected viewing it as it appears in print. However, I no longer have that email and don’t see another means to view the print style paper.

Local news. It is always good to remember national news and local news are not the same. By starting each day with the DM Register, I am reminded of all of the Iowa acts of kindness and forgiveness we are surrounded with each day.

Please let me turn off sports!. I don’t need or want any sports news. I just want news, local, national and international. This app is glutted up with sports news I don’t want to push through. Please

Love it. I grew up in Iowa reading the Register. It’s obviously not the same paper it was 60 years ago. Now, having left Iowa for California 50 years ago......it is great to touch in.

Good reporting. The Des Moines Register covers important stories across the state of Iowa. Good news coverage has never been more important and the Register has been doing a good job in objectively reporting major news happenings. Obviously they have some good reporters and certainly some good editors who are working well together.

Des Moines Register e-newspaper app. Has this app ever been tested on an I-Pad? It is HORRIBLE!! It does unpredictable things constantly. I can be zooming in on an article to read it and an article on a different page appears. Or, the app might go back to page one of section one. Half the time I spend on the app is wasted.

Love it!. I love it that the paper is laid out just like a newspaper! Since daily delivery isn’t possible in my area, I can use this to keep up on important events across the state. The USA Today edition is a nice bonus too.

Obituary. What happened to the current day obituaries? Really don’t like the new format. Is there another source for them?

Better than the paper. The app is really nice. Notifications on all breaking news!

Obnoxious. Whoever controls the notifications needs to understand the difference between “breaking news” and every story they post on social media. As a new resident to Des Moines, I was very excited to see the app had the option to select which notifications you’d like, but they obviously don’t honor your request.

Easy access to news, sports and stories of local interest. The app provides clear headlines to breaking stories, editorial content and stories relevant to our state and local governments as well as our schools. It’s convenient to access the Register electronically at any time and any where!

New Sunday morning ritual. I’ve officially made the shift to reading the Sunday paper online. Easy to maneuver, and it’s no longer going in the garbage when I’m finished.

Enjoying my digital app. Inessential a limo, long time physical newspaper subscriber. One of my friends has encouraged me in the past to subscribe digitally to the DM Register because it was a very nominal fee and you still be informed along with the television news. I finally did it when the DM Register ran a special.

Excellent newspaper. I love reading the uptodate current events and sports in my local paper. It’s always great to know I can still read the paper even in a digital format.

I am frustrated with this app. I am a 16 year old male and a native Iowan who wants to know some of the big picture of what is happening in the state. As far as I knew this was the most influential newspaper in the area and the most likely to give me some of the information I was looking for in the format I was looking for. The problem is that you have to purchase a subscription to read most of the articles which requires you to be an adult or at least agree you are one. This is a major roadblock in me actually using the app, and I am very frustrated about it as I get a free subscription to the New York Times. As such I can’t give it above the lowest rating because I don’t even get a chance to really read most of the content because I am not allowed to read it.

I rate this app as zero. I had that E edition large print app and I could read it. It was easy to move around now the new app the print is too small and when you go to enlarge it, it jumps all around. Print is too small very hard to read This app may be good for younger people, but for seniors, it is not user-friendly

Staying up with the news. I look forward to reading the paper every morning.

Horrible! Makes me sign in 3-4 times and change pw constantly. I am ready to cancel my annual subscription as it requires multiple login attempts and resetting of my password just to get to the ONE story I would like to read, and then it has a popup covering the story, asking me to subscribe! I AM subscribed! I AM logged in! This happens daily! Daily! It is NOT worth the time and effort it requires! I will read the WSJ and Times via their apps that actually RECOGNIZE ME AND WORK! This has gone on for months! The app seems to recognize my email and password and FACIAL RECOGNITION, and then blocking POP UP! Horrible app. I pay with a card, not through other apps like Apple. One would think it better, but it wants me to reinstate my purchase with Apple. It needs to work! I let it use facial recognition as I was so disgusted with this occurring multiple times per day. I’ll get a refund. Not worth the time!

Get the news quickly. I use the DMR app to get an overview of current news and events. If I want more I go to those articles or find other stories of my interest.

Outstanding. I grew up in Iowa and read the Register and the Tribune. Iowans are so lucky - AE Dairy and the Register! It’s comforting during this difficult time to receive the news I’m used to. Thank you!

App. I am disappointed with the Des Moines Register online newspaper. I haver seen other newspaper online Apps. That offer the paper as it appears in printed copy and it is much more like actually reading the paper. You can still isolate individual stories, photos, cartoons, etc. The paper that I am familiar with is the Salt Lake Tribune. In it, the full paper option costs the reader slightly more than that offered by the Register, but is, in my opinion, much more readable. Don Smith

Worst app Ever. This updated app is the worst reading app I have ever used. Whenever you tap to enlarge, it defaults to the upper left corner, not the area you are trying to enlarge. In reading view, entire page is not displayed, screen freezes when attempting to return from expanded view to normal view requiring restart. Worst of all is most of the time when you touch the screen anywhere it opens the text reading view which contains ads. They should go back to the previous version and dump this annoying upgrade!

Awful. I’ve had a digital subscription to the DMR for at least 12 years. Recently this app repeatedly asks me to sign in to read articles even after I’ve signed in. Today I signed in 4 times in one session and each time it took me back to the sign in page. I have subscriptions to The NY Times and Washington Post, both of which cost much less than the DMR subscription, but I never have any problems with those apps. I’m so frustrated that I’ll probably cancel my DMR subscription.

New tactics to get money out of you. I hate the new tactic of only letting you read a few paragraphs of story and the demanding $5 a month to read the rest! Oh, you still have to deal with all the ads, but they want your money. It’s amazing other media outlets can provide top stories for free, but the USA Today rag wants more money. About to delete this app!

Page crashes when video is embedded in article. The videos are fine when that's all that shows, but when the video is included with other content, the page freezes when the whole article loads and the play icon shows on the video.

Want to read comments!. The app works ‘just fine’ to read articles. Two things I’m very much NOT in favor of: 1) If you want to read the comments you can’t do that here. Personally, I subscribe specifically because I want to read the comments from other readers. 2) You CAN read the comments using the web. But any time you’re reading an article on the web, and click on any link to return to the main paper, IT OPENS THE APP. If you want to read the article comments, you’ll then need to close the app, navigate back to your web browser, where you can read exactly ONE article, before the app opens again and you get to start the whole process over again. App is great for reading articles and navigating the on-line paper. Garbage if you actually want to read comments. Don’t understand why this is so - other Gannett apps actually DO let you read the comments on their papers. Should be a fairly easy update.

Why can’t I read the paper?. All I want is the paper! In it’s normal format. The Des Moines Register’s online is hard to navigate. I don’t understand why they don’t just post the daily paper. It will only take this review if I give 5 stars! Every “nickname” comes back taken.

Best local news. I can always count on the Register to have the latest news. It’s updated throughout the day and does a great job covering news, sports, weather plus national topics with more content.

Paid subscription; still get ads. App works fine other than paying for a yearly subscription and still receiving ads and they autoplay. Wow.

Doesn't work. Won't come even though says ok and even after downloaded again. Used to work.

Could be so much better. I love having digital access to the local newspaper. I do not love the format of that access. I generally use the ‘Top Stories’ to try to peruse the latest news headlines. The section has grown larger and larger over time, but has not improved or given me more actual news. It must have some sort of random story poster and keeps the same stories up for weeks, NONE OF WHiCH ARE DATED. New stories mix with the old and the only way to know is click into each one and check. This is particularly bothersome with things like COVID statistic updates, which appeared daily for a long time. A story about 500 new cases might appear right alongside a story about 30 new cases and you’d never know if either was current. In addition, the same story will often appear many times in one scrolling, sometimes with a different headline. There seems to sometimes be a loose grouping of similar stories, but that is not consistent. The lead-in text is highly variable in both amount and quality. I would like to see an overhaul where there is a section for today’s news, with some divisions or sections for subject matter. Any stories from other dates than today need that date right there with the headline, and to be somewhere else entirely. Lead-in text should be consistent and concise and let me tell easily whether I want to read the rest of the story within a few words.

Sometimes. Works great good reading but I have to sign in two to three times a week reminds me my trial is up I sign in again and goes away says I have full access but continues to count my articles does need work

Lee Rood. Is the best part of the paper, she is so professional on her contractor stories. It’s too bad elected official will not do anything. I will remember that when election time comes around.

Same News. I subscribe to the Register for local news and to support local journalism. When I use this app with my subscription, I keep getting the same recycled news, day after day. I have to search to find anything new. I’ve tried the e-edition on this iPad and it’s almost unusable. I’m about to cancel my subscription to the Register.

Works but repetitive. The DSM Register app gets me where I want to go but then shows me the same news stories I saw yesterday, interspersed with too many repetitions of the same ad.

Terrible app. This app is awful. It doesn’t work well with a password protection program. When I log on through my password protection program, it takes me to the manage account section. If I click on the register link at the the top of that section, it brings up news from multiple dates and doesn’t even have the date at the top of the story. And sometimes I get to a place where I am asked to log in again. I want to read today’s paper! I want to have one log in place that gives links to today’s paper, archives and search, and subscription management,

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

Format. I prefer the traditional newspaper format with a front page with 4-5 following pages. Then sports with sports page and supporting pages etc. like the Mineral Daily News example.

Very Good. Reading the Register online works well for me.

Useless. I am a subscriber who lives half the year overseas. I am unable to login and access content - login is not available in the European Union. The help desk has been completely useless.

Doesn’t want to recognize my digital subscription. Supposedly this is full access to the print version of the paper. I’ve never been able to get to all the content. No comics, etc…

Terrible. This new app is terrible for reading the e-edition of the paper. It’s especially cumbersome and “twitchy” for someone with vision issues who needs to zoom the page to read.

Extremely difficult to log in when credentials change.. Poor app design makes logging in impossible when receiving an invite from another subscriber. I’ll just get my news from CNN.

Taking money from the children’s Hospital. I say download the app just to give them a 1 star just like I did. They tore down Carson King that has helped donate millions to the children’s Hospital. Unlike unsubscribe just don’t give this paper attention or money.

New format. I do not like this new format. I would like to read it as it appears in the print form. This just recently changed and I dislike it. Please consider changing it back so I can read the newspaper as it should be read.

Why can’t you get this right???. I have not been able to access any of my emailed top 5 stories for 2 weeks now and today cannot open the print edition. I have deleted the app and downloaded it again. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF NOT GETTING WHAT I AM OAYING FOR!

App doesn’t work. The app won’t allow me to renew my subscription.

Improved but room to get better. Still tends to be slow and clumsy

Cancel subscription. I’ve tried the last three months to cancel my digital subscription and they won’t cancel it. It’s the most unethical and frustrating thing I’ve tried to do!

Digital print. I’ve tried repeatedly to subscribe to the digital print edition but can’t seem to get it done. I would think advertisers would want this to be easy, not impossible.

Not up to task. App in enemy’s form keeps freezing tried on multiple devises so not my tablet. Cannot navigate easily to a particular page or prior issue.

Won’t Let Me Sign On Even Though I Have A Subscription. It welcomes me by name, then requires me to sign in, and then keeps telling me to sign in. Doesn’t do any good to have an app which won’t give paying customers access. Annoying

I like to read DMR..... And the app would be handy to do it—if you can login. I have an account that allows full access through browser but this app won’t do it for me. I don’t think that I should have to pay for another sub. So beware,

Slow to load. Why so slow to load? It seems like a recent update made this app really slow to load after starting up.

No Way to Cancel. Once the on line subscription is started the Register makes it impossible to figure out how to cancel the monthly charges

All Sports All the Time. This app consistently features sports stories over actual news stories. The notifications are horrible, too. I haven’t found a setting that doesn’t send 5+ pointless “breaking news” stories a day- most of which are (surprise!) sports stories.

Not as good as the old Print Edition app. The eversion of the paper locks up, is hard to navigate. It does not respond well when trying to zoom or move around the page. The app needs work.

Best. Way better than my 2 local papers. I subscribe to the register, but not my 2 local newspapers

App does not connect to website. The sign in feature to link subscription does not work.

Essential Reading!. Good to see professional journalists standing up to bullies!

Register Review. One of the best papers in the nation. Liked it better when Register was in morning and Tribune in evening

Keeps asking me to subscribe. Despite being a Register subscriber and being signed in with my Register account, it keeps asking me to subscribe over and over.

Basics!. I can’t bring up the front page of today’s paper! That’s a DUH!

Helpful. I bought a subscription for the Register because of Covid-19. It’s been helpful to keep a pulse on what is happening in Iowa.

Subscription. My husband and I have been long time subscribers to both print and digital. Lately we have had issues getting on line. Customer service was no help. Very close to no longer subscribing.

Appreciate community messages re: Covid19. Appreciate factual information with minimal sensational reporting

Please add a search function. This format lacks a search function. No matter how wonderfully you organize content, users still will want to search by keywords, too. Please add.

Worst app ever. And the circulation department is even worse! I have subscribed to this paper at least THREE TIMES (maybe more, I’ve lost count I’ve talked to so many people) and I still don’t receive the full edition. I know customer service is on the decline but these people hit the ridiculous mark. Sad

Terrible Index. It is impossible to find the Saturday comics page. It is not listed and even a search by name fails to locate it. Miss it on Saturday.

Terrible app. Where to begin, I can’t use the app without agreeing to do adds and to allow the app to share information about myself. This is one of the worse apps ever.

Does not work on iPad. I can get the Register on my phone but not on iPad. Chat help was no help at all. I guess I will have to just delete my account and get my news elsewhere.

The not a newspaper look. The app seems to only show articles and not a full newspaper look. So are all the articles shown? Who knows. Take a look at the CR Gazette…a well thought out layout like a newspaper only an app.

Not Good. Purchased a yearly subscription, but an always pops up in my articles asking me to subscribe. It’s not just a little, it’s an add that blocks you from reading the article and you must click out of it to move on. So annoying.

Right on. Always enjoyed the paper all the way back when I was a paperboy deliver back in 50’s

Awful app. Come on Des Moines, you can do better. Right now this app behaves like a 2 horse John Deere plow. Others have described how bad it is, I can only concur. Maybe you don’t realize it but the future is digital. Maybe you are fading to obscurity.

Awkward!. I prefer to read the enewspaper, not the top stories version. It is a nightmare to get there. Today, after several attempts to access that version, I'm giving up. Soon, I’ll just give up on the Register all together.

Awful. This is truly one of the five worst app experiences I have ever had. I want to support the press but this level of incompetence is off the charts. This app can’t keep an identity straight from day to day.

Constantly reloads. The moment you leave the app it reloads to the main page and you lose the article you were reading.

Unable to sign in. This app is terrible. No links to sign in work. In Settings, the page just has the spinning wheel that never loads. When I try and click from one of the # of limited free stories, the page is blank, nothing. Frustrating.

Works great. Great source for local news in Des Moines and Central Iowa. Well made app.

A nightmare of ads. The ads get in the way of reading stories, as if this app was designed in an effort to kill news media.

I don’t like the update at all.. Too many superfluous items shown. Too small of a viewing window. Difficult to maneuver. Give me the old app back!

Glitchy. Constantly asks me to login. The advertisements throughout the feed are absolutely annoying and disrupt the feed. And then the occasional pop-up asking me to subscribe.

Des Moines register. Old app was a lot better!! You have to go to settings every time you open it to reset what you set up the last time.

Iowa Sports!!!. All I see on here is Iowa athletics I DO NOT READ the paper for Iowa athletics. I also am aware of the fact that Iowa is a very conservative state however I feel I see lately is pro-trump, and oppressive politicians. As a black Iowan I have to search hard for things that are important to me.

Horrible!!!. The old app was close to reading a physical paper but this app is terrible. Page is covered by control arrows and does not allow moving around the page to read on phone. Hate it. Bring back the old format.

Review. This new version is awful. I wishI had never changed. It is so hard to navigate and it is so touchy that it blanks out or changes to another page.
