Encyclopædia Britannica Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Could be better. Unfortunately the first entry I looked up was Cleopatra. The app crashes every time. Reinstalling doesn’t help. The app needs work.

U.S. Presidents not downloading. This is a fun app to download. It has a variety of stuff to read and learn about. However, when I tried to read an article about a U.S. President (e.g. Jefferson, Grant, Kennedy) it said “article downloading”. I waited for at least 5 minutes, but did not download. So is there some kind of technical issue? Perhaps some articles are updating?

Thanks for the update. Doesn’t have nearly as many articles as Wikipedia, but it’s much more family-friendly. It has an article for “Star Trek: The Original Series,” but the encyclopedia would be better with general articles for “Star Trek” and “Star Wars.” It should be marked as having “in-app purchases”, because there’s a premium subscription. Next to the “get,” I should see small letters for “in-app purchases.”

Functional, but not many features... The articles are great and well written but the app doesn’t have many features. There’s no continuous scrolling (or reading ruler) and the featured articles appear to be the same every year.

Was Born & Died. This app has two problems. The first is that there is not enough content on the “Events this Day” page. The second is that half of the content on the daily-events page is informing you that a specific person was born or died on that day. This is frustrating as they already have a “Born this Day” page. If I want to learn about birthdates, I will go to that page.

The link map is awesome. I’m loving this app so far

Does anyone know how do I minimize an image to read the text?. Hi, does anyone know how to minimize images to be able to read the text on the iPad? …. This is really annoying…

Does not give bibliography info. My son did a report and wasn’t able to do a complete bibliography because you don’t have any information.

Great Information but Missing One Thing. I love the information this app provides. The one addition this app needs is a random topic button. It would be an excellent way to discover new topics to read about.

Needs MAJOR upgrades. This app needs to be updated. The list of the names of the Presidents isn’t current (it still has listed Donald Trump as the President, instead of Joe Biden,) and it’s the same for the the list of names for the Vice Presidents.

Pretty good so far. Pretty navigable at this point, willing to pay if it continues to be good. Reviewed 2022 June

Not Working Properly. I just installed this app on three devices today. Even though it is advertised as a Family Sharing app you cannot share the yearly subscription which allows you full access to all Britannica online content. So I purchased three subscriptions, one for each device. After installing the app and adding the subscriptions which were validated on each device, none of the photos in the app under any articles would show up on the screen. The photos were an important reason that I purchased this app. If I had known that it would not work I would not have wasted so much money. I would have purchased an online subscription to the website for the year. For the record, the app store showed that this app would work on this device.

Just one note…. I love having access to the Encyclopedia Brittanica on my phone, and the price is very reasonable; but there is one feature that I feel is sorely missing: bookmarking. There are some articles that are so long that I don’t want to read through them in one sitting, and having to go and find the page that I left off on every time I close the app is tedious. I know I can add whole articles to my favorites and that is useful, but it would be nice to be able bookmark individual pages as well. Other than that, I think it’s great that I have such easy access to so much knowledge!

Pointless unless you subscribe through the app. If you subscribed on the website, you can’t login through the app.

So what’s the big hurry?. I really like this app! About the quizzes though, I enjoy them but would like to be able to turn off the timer on them; it doesn’t need to be a race! I would like to be able to fully read and understand the questions before answering. I find that most of my wrong answers are the result of a misread question or hurried answer. My interest here is to learn, not to stress myself out! Please make the timer optional. Thanks!

Good app but could use a minor upgrade. I use my iPad Pro for note taking and research for fun, and this app is a great resource for topics of interest. However I wish this app could better support the split screen multitask, as apps hover over the Britannica articles instead of sharing the screen which can be cumbersome to move the apps across the screen while note taking. I hope maybe this can be an adjusted but overall I enjoy what this app has to offer!

Login Problem. How can I login with Facebook? I have been logging in with Facebook on browsers but couldn’t in this app.

Old app, images not loading. This app is old, really old. Pictures aren’t loading and pages are loading slowly. I’ve tried different devices, installing/reinstalling, different networks. Update this thing and let’s keep going. I’m a paying customer.

Looked good for a few page turns. Tried it and seemed pretty good and then it popped up a “remember to take a quiz” popup and then the screen went black and began flashing in and out of the page. Seems too buggy for an app that wants to charge a subscription.

I’d like to like this.. I’ve used the webpage a bit. The quiz content is much better than Alexa skills. I was on the verge of ordering a subscription when I installed the iPad app. The AppStore blurb states “we heard your feedback and fixed common issues”. 10 seconds later I’m banging on the broken choose quiz category link. Seriously?

Reliable, verifiable, well-researched. A beautifully designed app with a universe of topics that are well-written, deeply researched, apolitical, and verified. Britannica cuts through the undergrowth of questionable online material and remains a dependable source of intelligently-presented content. With an impressively credentialled staff of experts who stand behind their work, Brittanica is still the best since December 10th, 1768.

Good App, UI could be updated. Good information, better than 99% of the junk out in the world that “claim” to be of professional reference. Application not bringing up content properly. Tabs need to be updated and are slow in loading information

It is really nice. I have used the encyclopedia Britannica books and before I read the books i used Wikipedia, until my teacher told me that Wikipedia can be edited by people and you don’t even need an account, so after that are used the complete set of Britannica that I bought the books from eBay there from 2004 and I did attempt to read all the books ALL 32 books and I use them for studying for school, but when I’m on the go I actually use this the encyclopedia Britannica app I really love it it’s actually better than Wikipedia, i would use it like Google but I won’t delete Google for this app but I give it a five star rating.

Great app…but…. Could use a “back” button. Great, otherwise!

No more additions pls. I think the programming of this app have done well to function and for me, it doesn't crash. I predict that it would starting doing that if adding more features, such as bookmarking/page marking. It's a spectacular app! So much use of creativity put into this and other users need to start using their imagination to stay ahead! You're awesome!

Needs Lots of Improvement. I'm upgrading by one star. New version doesn't crash, looks nicer. App still needs work (access to dictionary and other common reading app features). Getting better though. Since this app is pathetic I'm downgrading it to one star, reason being is that since I started using it a lot it crashes on certain pages of some articles and also because it has seldom been updated. Content is great and reasonable for fifteen bucks a year but the app is really bad - no access to the dictionary no book marks no customization. It looks alright and works well but is really lacking otherwise.

Great content, horrible app. 5 stars for content, one star for the app. No dark mode and you can’t even select article text to look up things (??). The paged reading is extremely annoying especially the page flip animations which can’t be turned off. Given the long article lengths you should be able to bookmark specific sections of an article and the app should remember where you left off. Pretty bad for something that costs 8 bucks a month.

Frustrating. The main problem with this app is that there are ads EVERYWHERE but then also you have to pay for the majority of the content. I’m fine with one of the other but have both is extremely annoying.

Good, but.... Great content. Please get rid of the persistent pop up box reminding me of the quiz feature. Please get rid of the slow animated page turns and permit continuous scrolling.

The price of knowledge. Shame education and knowledge costs money. I understand there’s tons of work and upkeep and maintenance expenses yet, those free knowledge bases supply the usual information at a cost of being edited by omission, one sided views etc etc. as a big fan of those old thick hardcover shelf books, of which as a child i would peruse daily through, online isn’t that great of a desire. As curiosity of statue’s and other art gets erased from a young minds view, the books no longer collected , unavailable and dismissed due to online ventures such as social media, games and chatting with strangers, encyclopedias give way to a choice, an hurried, short learning curve, dumbed down populace. The sharing and influence imbued among actual People, other then the criminal minds has long ago become a cloudy opaque afterthought. Best regards Britannica , thank you for the adventures around the world many decades ago. Im still traveling in my imagination. For free.

Great Update!. So excited Britannica has opened up their content in the app! And the quizzes are a great addition as well.

Great content!. This has always been a great encyclopedia. Smart people writing well researched and thoughtfully edited articles. With the content now available, it is a joy to explore.

Great but.... This is a great tool for learning, but the interface needs an update. It feels like I’m back on my iPhone 7. Just some food for thought.🤷‍♂️

Kid safe!. My 8yr old loves to read about things and learn. I had a Wikipedia app on his iPad but realized you could do a lot of inappropriate searches and get images and all sorts of stuff that is not kid safe. This app however is very clean and very scientific (if he wanted to try and search something out of curiosity) tons of content for free and really cool fun features. Keep it up guys!

Formatting. The app is supposed to work on ipad, but the first article I tried to read had an unmovable graphic that prevented me from reading it. Looking at the version history, this is a terribly maintained app, especially an app that is supported by a paid subscription. The world does need a factual encyclopedia, and it should definitely not be free, but this app is terrible and I don't understand why.

Good app, works well but lacks bookmark. If you want to read a long article there is no way to keep your place. Otherwise the app works well and the content is much more readable than Wikipedia.

Great!!!. Great application and beautiful design But it would be better if I could go through it like a regular books Wanna read multiple articles but alway lose track after exiting article

Bookmarks, dictionary. As others have pointed out, this could really use a bookmark, place holder feature. After leaving the app there’s no way to return to where you left off. On the web/browser version in the help it talks about bookmarks but I’m unable to find that feature so decided to try the app but it’s the same - no way to mark progress. A dictionary would also be nice. In a browser it’s not so bad as I have a Chrome dictionary installed but I still have to manually lookup a lot of words. The app could really use it. Terrific content but frustrating to use.

Not usable. I downloaded this to check out their quizzes. I have to force quit the app every minute because of pop up ads that cover the screen and cannot be closed in any way. The app is poorly designed and poorly coded. The quizzes also contain 10 questions and never randomize the content from any set larger than that same 10 (same questions every single time). It’s saddening that they would put this out as a product.

No bookmarks!. I love the content but no bookmarks. Really? Reading a 300 page article and I can’t mark where I am at? Unbelievable! My last renewal if not updated.

Can’t download articles. I like to read copies and be able to highlight, etc.

BRITANNICA YOU HAVE DISAPPOINTED ME AND THE MILLIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE WHO USE YOU. BRITANNICA. you seriously need to UP YOUR GAME!!! britannica doesn’t even have answers for simple questions like “what did people eat in Northwest Territories in 1800s” Like cmon! My friend and I are doing a research project on Northwest Territories in 1800s and so far britannica has been USELESS. UP YOUR GAME BRITANNICA!!! AND MAKE BETTER WEBSITES!!!D

Apologies many times over…. I would like to take back everything bad I said about the Fabulous Encyclopedia Britannica. It’s just that I don’t think that I am smart enough to be reading such a Treasure Tome.

It’s time for a refresh. Apparently Britannica has forgotten it’s loyal customers and owe us an updated version at least compatible with newer iPhones screens. It has been over four years since the last update.

Used to read this every night. Now I have to pay $14 per year. Next I’ll have to pay to learn common law.

Help. I cannot get in after paying for a years subscription because I don’t recall my password and there is no way to get a new one. Also, there is no way to get help.

The app needs an update. The app feels abandoned in its current state, it has potential but it needs to me modernized and cleaned up. The screen size is a joke, and the popup ads are ridiculously annoying. There should be some sort of purchase able ad-free version, but make the app more user friendly first devs.

No off-line access. Yes, it would require a large file to have all the features off-line. But since Britannica doesn't care to offer this feature, I don't care to give it more than one start.

Spellcheck. If only you had a spell check. I believe people would not use google and Wikipedia so much. To look for a word and know the correct spelling is hard for the average person. I would love to use your app because it is so much more accurate.

Unbiased and straight information for a small fee. Be wary of any free online “pedia’s” out there. For $15 a year this is a great deal. Devs should be pushing this product more in our school systems and social media.

Worth much more than it's price. Very informative, and invaluable for university assignments. And to the people complaining about the price: seriously? Are you listening to yourself? It's 2 dollars a month, that's nothing! And certainly much less than what it would cost to buy a physical equivalent.

Time for an upgrade. Over 2 years since last upgrade. Ugly on newer iPhones. UI could use a serious update.

Looks like I’m not the only one complaining about subscription recognition. This isn’t recognizing my subscription either.... And it cost a FORTUNE Update - I found out how to attach your account. There’s a small, underlined “TAP HERE”, but in very tiny print, right under the “subscribe here!” Banner. You don’t really see it. Use that and it will connect your account.

Knowledge should be free. Plato,Socrates ,Aristotle,Newton shared their knowledge for free. Even Einstein was not in pursue of wealth during his fruitful career. "All the knowledge of the world is useless if it cant be shared for free",said Socrates. I wouldn't mind paying $30 for the entire encyclopedia but $3 per page hinder my quest for knowledge I appreciate the effort of those who created the app, digitalized the wealth of knowledge . They deserve to be rewarded for their effort . But we do need more free stuff for learning . I gave 4 stars anyway cause the app is fancy and easy to use.

Wikipedia alternative. Even though it costs money...(sad), this is a good mobile alternative when you need general information that you can cite for school (and Wikipedia isn't allowed).

Crashes. Paying for an app that crashes a lot is not good for the reputation of the developer. Please fix it! Could be a good app but because of this fault it's not worth the money.

Why. Why would I buy a subscription based app, when wikipanion is free, amazinly accurate, and dynamic???

Waste of money. I am sure britannica doesn't care about customer in this app just colorful ads. And no enough options. You can't do a list of things with it. Just gauges you money per month!

Pathetic!. Doesn't even deserve a star! Students should not use this as a source of research because it is EXTREMELY biased on almost every topic. You're better off with Wikipedia, at least you can read MORE THAN A DAMN PARAGRAPH on it without having to get scammed into buying.

Detailed articles but.... Sure would be nice if there was a one-time purchase option, especially since it looks like it just removes ads. Don't mind at all paying more up front for that option.

Shocking. Well another app that gets you to buy for a cheap price then tries to screw you over by asking you to pay more for the full version.

1 month 1.99$. Are you kidding me? No more Britanicca.

Bias. I find political bias in their entries. Not cool. As a teacher I expect to find facts without colouring for or against any political party or its representatives. Cancelling subscription.

good price, disappointing content. As a writer and info junkie, I find EB to be flawed. Good design, functionality, & team of writers. Poor content. It is outdated in many areas, including health; it doesn't have even common entries like "peri-menopause" or "Transactional Analysis". Its DSM info is hopelessly stuck in the past. I also get the feeling that despite the many probable female writers on its team, it is an app funneled by men for men. Sorry, 2 stars. Revamp your content and you're all set. EB's place in many of our hearts haven't changed since the days of the multi-volume tomes, but with such shoddy research, I for one will not be renewing my subscription. If I could get a refund, I would; but I'd like to see it improve. Please note that you ARE competing with www. and Wikipedia. Thanks. Hope to see more changes in the very near future.

Great App! Worth Every Penny!. I had a print version of the Encyclopaedia as a child and I loved reading the articles. This app allows me to do that wherever I go. The articles are informative and easy to read. A must have for any inquisitive mind. One last thing, have you noticed that the positive reviews are the only ones that are written in complete grammatical sentences and all the negative reviews are written in gibberish?

Good content, ruined by crashes.. The content is top-notch, yet viewing certain articles causes the app to crash which unfortunately ruins the entire experience. As a minor point, there should be an option to disable the page-turn transition effect, which is a bit too garish and quickly becomes tiresome. Without the crashes this is easily 4-5 stars.

Worth every penny. Don't buy into the hype, Wikipedia is fine if you need to know what happened in Episode 3 of season 2 of your favorite cartoon, but if you want or need real scholarship this is the app to have. The articles are both accurate and well-written, the price is a reflection of the fact that actual professionals write the pieces. If you can afford the 2$ a month this is well worth the price.

Not free. $1.99/mo. Deleted.

Not recognizing subscriptions. It is sad that it is not recognizing subscription and what a waste of app

Great App. This saves me shelf space, money, and eliminates research time. $2 a month is great for this encyclopedia. Keep this app for 80 years and you still saved money on buying the whole set. If you need quality information wrapped in a quality app, get the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Outdated interface and always issues with subscription. The app looks quite dated and doesn’t properly support latest phones. Always forgets about subscription and now it doesn’t recognize the subscription at all so it shows adds all the time. Time to cancel subscription and delete the app.

Feature Request. Please make it possible to select text! I want to look up definitions of words as I’m reading encyclopedia entries.

Trying to Help Y'all. If you are a student or professional, and require the ability to copy/paste, or make notes/markup, you can't do that here. It's only for pleasure reading/earth licking type people who don't do any meaningful or useful work, and do nothing but irritate the world with incessant narcissistic blathering about bugger all that really matters. Is that you? Oh sorry. 🙊 Icky icky icky gross app made of poo. Don't buy. Go buy a pack of smokes and a pancake instead. Better value. Peace and love to all.

Useless. Worst application ever!! You have to have an account which is stupid then it freezes. Plus you need to subscribe for $2 for an application that freezes all the time?! Please!!! Wikipedia eats this application 10 times!!!

Poor Customer Service and Content. Encyclopedia Britannica content is sub-standard in every regard. Out of date, incomplete, narrow. This is a poor successor to the beloved book set of long ago.

Not what I expected. Why do so many items indicate No Content Available at this Time. Nothing on the American Civil War? And where is the option to turn off auto renew? Really lacking in content.

Close to perfection.. This app is nearly perfect. It is stable. The price is quite reasonable. The content is about as reputable as it gets. The only thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars is that it has somewhat limited customisation settings, it would be nice to have more font and background settings and perhaps the ability to print articles from the app. Otherwise it is a great app.

Still not FREE!?!? Really!?. BILLIONS of people use Wikipedia a day. Britannica needs to offer their website for free and charge for ads. People are NOT going to pay for information that is available elsewhere on the web for free. 1. Website- make it FREE, but charge outside companies to place ads 2. App- charge a fee for an ad-free app. A one-time purchase price of $1.99-$4.99. You'll sell more copies than your printed version. You will not make it with your current method in this free web/app world we live in. Please change.

Thank you, EB. Reading the first paragraph of the entry on Da Vinci reminded me why I always loved the Britannica and could lose myself in it for hours. It wasn't simply presenting information, it taught me why I keep returning to DaVinci's sketch, what his true gift was. His ability to see, and I would add to teach us to see. The Britannica also taught me to see and learn to understand the world. Wikipedia is a great resource but those of us who grew up with the Britannica, have always been acutely aware of its limitations. It is nice to see a print publisher adapting so well to e media. And, doing it in a way that even I can manage to afford. While I strongly agree that such resources should be free, I also believe that writers and scholars and educators should be able to feed their families, and companies who provide such important resources should be encouraged and supported. This does not mean there is not still room for improvement. The option to have more resources available offline, better integration of images and other enhancements would be welcome. In addition, I hope the Britannica continues to update materials, but without becoming overly obsessed about trying to all provide the newest and latest. There are other sources for that. I rely on the Britannica for the quality, reliability, synthesis, and often insight their articles provide.

No option to print/ create PDF of text for premium ipad subscribers!!!. I am an ipad subscriber, and am highly disappointed you don't have the ability to send articles to a printer or create a PDF of text to print. I am a college student, and without this option this app is useless. Please add this feature or I will cancel my subscription.

best information source for iPad. I have banned wikipedia from all my web browsing. First of all I hate how wikipedia has a monopoly on information source nowadays. I am more sick of its bad writing and often controversial and dubious claims (despite citing sources). Britannica should've been the go-to source for general information on the web. The 1.99 per month is the downside to using it but it is not a high price to pay for well written and trustworthy information. On the other hand, wikipedia does beat britannica over quantity of articles. You won't find every minute, frivolous topic under its own article in britannica. But well, I'll assume whatever britannica has not covered must not be important enough to be worth knowing. On the plus side, I was very pleased with the design of the app. The gui is quite nicely suited for the iPad and as far as the design goes I have absolutely no complaint.

Premium content. Nah, Nature review found Wikipedia to have less errors than EB. Ttyl

Wow. I'm really impressed once I subscribed. I'm a learning geek and like the idea of the vetted information as opposed to sources such as Wikipedia that I've used a lot previously. Not a big fan of a monthly subscription but i've spent $2 a month in much worse ways!

Update?. Will this app ever get updated?

Wiki what. This is a comprehensive encyclopedia, the people who try to compare this to Wikipedia are sorely misguided. Try for instance to cite Wikipedia as a trusted source... You will be laughed out of the room (and if you are not you should leave the room, because the people in the room are stupid). This is Britannica the most trusted encyclopedia since the 18th century, written by trusted, objective professionals. Great app, severely underpriced subscription, don't let Wikipedia (written by biased laymen) give you information, get the facts, get Britannica....

Smooth and Reliable. I have had a britannica account for over a year and I just found out about this app. Not only is the full encyclopedia here (with Internet connection), but the presentation is basically perfect. I've never seen an information app work this smoothly. It's even fun to just turn the pages because the app is built. If getting reliable information is worth something to you, consider paying for the subscription (you need it for this app).

Excellent resource. So far I am nothing but happy with this app. It works well, is fairly intuitive and it's from a company that has over 240 years of knowledge experience. I grew up with Britannica, and have fond memories of reading through different articles. To address a couple of the previous reviews - 1) how is it a bait and switch when it clearly states in the description that there is a monthly subscription? 2) for those that say it doesn't work offline, you can save articles for offline viewing easily. 3) for those that are complaining about a monthly subscription vs. a one time fee, this is one of the leading storehouses of knowledge and for the cost of 1 coffee a month you get access to extensively vetted information. Also, if you consider the cost of the print version ($1400 for the set) then $2 a month is truly pittance If you want free and mostly accurate, use Wikipedia. I prefer my research to be 100% accurate and will happily invest in Britannica.

Needs a lot of improvement. Britannaca is a very good encyclopedia , but this app is horrible. Cannot compete with Wikipedia apps out there yet. First, who wants to pay $1.99/month. Second, when you come across words that you cannot understand while you're reading there is no link to the dictionary and back to where you are like some Wikipedia apps out there and you pay only one time. To compete with the competitors is very easy , more features, quality, and reasonable price. For now I will delete this app and wait.

Great app!. Paired with a subscription (managed by iTunes, not EB), this app has a ton of great content! I especially like the daily content and the ability to save articles for offline viewing -- a must for some of the larger articles. The linkmap on articles is also very nice, as it lets you visually explore related content.

Can’t use. Keeps crashing. App keeps crashing can’t use it.

Excellent Resource on iPod Touch. It's a bargain for $1.99 per month, and I get the certainty that the in-depth articles are written by subject matter experts and the bonus of more interesting references and more coherent writing than Wikipedia; the writing on the evolution of the eye (under photoreception) much more interesting than the equivalent Wiki article. Wikipedia has its place, but I prefer the Britannica whenever possible. I already saved a number of articles for future reading on my iPod Touch since I don't have the benefit of constant Internet like iPhone users. It's easy to use, but it could incorporate a search-within-current-article feature, and a more universal back button to restore me to my article after clicking Browse or This Day.

Basically good. Features very comprehensive and reliable articles on the most broad or popular subjects, but tends to fall short when you're looking for something narrower or more specific. The current iPad interface could use an upgrade, and the only thing you can adjust in terms of appearance is font size.

Excellence as always from Britannica. Britannica has long been one of the most respected encyclopedias available. I have long been a subscriber to the online web version. Now I am able to use my membership to also login to the app and very happy with the results! When at first EB asked me to buy 2 separate memberships that was malarkey. The app is a nice alternative to the browser based version. You can modify things such as the text size. BUT what is missing for me is the bibliographic information which you can easily copy and paste on the website.

Does not accept school login. I have access to Encyclopedia Britannica on my computer because my school provides a login through EB School. However, this iOS application rejected my login all three attempts. This app needs to fix this terminating and majorly detrimental issue in that it is rejecting members from full access. This app would receive five stars if this was not a present issue.

Nearly useless to the blind/visually impaired community…. **Sight, impaired, user**this app does not comply with Apple's voiceover (verbal feedback for blind users), rendering it virtually useless to anybody who utilizes voiceover for accessing technology.

LIke I've just been had by a used car dealer.... Oh man, all went well at first. For $2 a month you get the whole Britannica, and you can save content for off-line viewing. Seems to work really well. BUT, when you subscribe, an auto-renew function is turned on so you will pay $2 a month until you figure out how to turn it off. I managed it by actually reading, in desperation, the subscription confirmation email I received. Click the link near the bottom of the email that says go to iTunes. iTunes will open on your machine and a page will appear where you can clearly select to turn off the auto-renew. You really should be able to just do it from within the app or may within the iPhone settings somewhere. I couldn't find it. I wonder if all iPhone subscriptions work this way. It's a pretty shoddy business practice and stains Britannica's reputation - maybe Apple's too?

Superior experience. The interface is well thought out and most importantly, responsive, unlike Wikipedia. The content is as one would expect from Britannica, thorough and well written.

Lacks Content/Few Features. First, let me say that I have somewhat enjoyed this app... & I am a current subscriber. Probably not for much longer though. The Articles lack content, & many times will not fully cover a topic. Often, they will not even include links, or related articles. I have had some reservations about a few of the assessments made on political topics. When shortened, leaving out key political details can be misleading, & may have an impact the way folks understand what actually took place. Sorry if I sound harsh. Good App, w/more content/sharing tools. I hope to rate it better in the future, after an update of some sort. Thank you.

Worth it. This is awesome, I have been a kid member for some time, so the switch was cool, now I can work on my iPads. And, this is great as long as you have a membership. The only reason some people have such problems is because they aren't willing to pay . It is great and informative if you get the real thing. Definitely worth it .

Can we get serious?. Downloaded, browsed, deleted. I looked at a few articles, and was extremely disappointed at the marketing gimmickry employed to prompt for subscriptions. One article that had 20 pages in the print edition was reduced to a paragraph, with a "subscribe for more!" trailer. No thanks. What I would like is a stand-alone reference that requires no internet access. I travel to remote and austere locations. Remember the CD-Roms that used to be available before broadband? I would gladly pay some $$ for a baseline AND pay for an annual update for a sizable (1gb would be great) and respectable (not Wikipedia) resource. Are you up for the challenge Britannica? World Book? 2 stars 'cause I reserve 1 star reviews for Hollywood egos and bad US Presidents (yes, I know, I know...same thing.)

Basic information, no more. I expected the wealth of information I remember from the printed Britannica. This is more like a basic encyclopedia, like the World Book Encyclopedia I had as a child, which is good information at that level but does not satisfy an adult curiosity. Example, the Colorado Plateau hear warrants two paragraphs. Nothing on its formation at all. Every time I come here for information I am disappointed. I am canceling my subscription.

Saving Articles. I love the app. But I'm having trouble when I try to save several articles for offline viewing. The "save article" dialogue box migrates down the screen to the point where I can no longer tap the "save" command button. Please correct in future version. An other problem is there is no way to synch your "saved" articles between your iPhone and iPad. There don't seem to be any account settings that enable this feature.

No offline access, nothing Wikipedia doesnt offer. Its a neat app considering it coming from Britannica, but an encyclopedia inaccessible offline doesnt make sense. Having a full-fledged pocket reference book in your phone, accessible whenever you need it, is what would have set it apart from other online-based references, which like this app are merely content browsers -- yet for free. This new business model that is subscription-based may offer the most up-to-date content all the time, but it will have to do more to trump Wikipedia if it seeks users to actually pay for its service.

Excellent. I have an online premium membership with Encyclopedia Britannica and just now discovered this app after previously having to access the EB website through Safari on my iPhone, which was a bit cumbersome. Turns out my membership extends to this app, and after logging in I saved some stuff for future offline reading while traveling. The app itself is a pleasure to use, and of course EB information is concise and dependable.

Subscription problem fixed and yes I love Britannica. Customer support told me to re-download the app which I had already done. The trick was to read carefully and not click on the big subscribe button, but the links embedded in the text that connect you if you have already subscribed. So if you have the same problem I did, read the entire text of the "resubscribe" screen and click on the embedded text links. As for the app, I subscribe since edited, scholarly reference material is important and the crowd-sourced wikipedia, while useful, is not sufficient on it's own. Having quick and easy access to the whole encyclopedia and the ability to save articles for offline reading is great. So yes a good start. But now that Britannica is focusing explosively on digital they need to up the ante . In order for Britannica ito expand and succeed it needs to show to more people the value of curated and edited reference materials. The app needs to add more source material, video and pictorial sources, and external links. The LinkMap feature is a great tool for exploring, but it would also be helpful if they provided curated, fixed link maps on large topics such as philosophy, science and the arts. Also, they need to allow copying and saving text. After all reference material needs to be quoted in other texts! And no, I am no longer a high school or college student - this is just for personal learning.

Requires separate subscriptions for iPhone and iPad. I bought a year's subscription on my iPhone, assuming that I could also access the content on my iPad. But no, I'm asked to pay all over again to read exactly the same stuff on my iPad.

Coolest app ever. Okay so maybe I'm just a huge nerd but this is like the coolest app ever for me. Growing up as a little kid I always loved looking through the pictures in Encyclopedias and marveled at how amazing our earth, history, animals, etc are. This is just like the coolest app ever and I'm so tired of using Wikipedia (which isn't even a real source) for info because I can't trust everything I read on Wikipedia but I know I'm getting the real deal with this app! Also, the interface is SO COOL! Literally they tried to make it so that when you flip through the pages of an article it's almost like flipping through a real encyclopedia. And the pictures are great and don't take up the whole screen which is nice! You can click on them too to make them bigger. This app is just awesome I'm just sooo happy I found it! Yayyyyy

Disappointe. After update saved offline files crash program.

Fabulous. I just started using the app, but it seems stunning. Super-speedy-- easier and faster to visit the article about an intra-linked term and then return to the original article than it is to perform the same procedure at the PC. Seems very slick in taking advantage of the iPad platform. And of course the mammoth content is there. Two bucks a month is a great price for anyone who even occasionally wishes to peruse the lengthy and scholarly articles. Update: A virtually perfect app; would be nice if there were a fast way to go BACK to previous article instead of only to the previous page. The scrollbar at the bottom of an article page already lets one navigate easily through the present article.

A REAL Encyclopedia always available & up to date. I loved the Encyclopedia Britannica. And I especially love the app, well worth the $1.99 monthly subscription. I remember using encyclopedias in book form. They were multi-volumes, expensive and updates were only available annually. And they would take up at least an entire shelf. The best, most revered and most expensive, was Britannica. I'm glad that Britannica transitioned into digital format. I'm sure that with Wikipedia and such, print versions of encyclopedias have become obsolete. It would have been a great loss of knowledge with factual, vetted, well-written articles had Britannica gone the way of the VHS. I have been using this app since it became available. Wikipedia serves its purpose but to get the benefits of a real encyclopedia get the Britannica app.

Unsure. The articles were very superficial so I paid for the subscription and thought it would be more intelligent however most articles are just one paragraph. It seems like I still have a Lite version, but there is nowhere in the app to view your acct. settings or make choices or unsubscribe. I have no idea if it's upgraded or not. The free version says to upgrade to get better content. It is not evident. Oh Yeah - On the sales page it says easily manage in settings - there ARE NO app settings in the Ipad machine settings or in the app itself. There is Nowhere to unsubscribe or manage the account.

app needs some serious 21st Century improvements. When you open this app, you’ll be transported to the 80s... 1880s! Rimshot! Seriously, what are you spending money on? Rewrite the app.

Disappointed. Charge a total fee for the entire apps. I am very disappointed over $1.99 a month. Wikipeadia apps offers 3GB of downloaded information @ one price and is really the best. We are in the information age and E.B. ought to know it has other sources or apps for information. I will not pay a cent until E.B. charge one fee for its apps and not $1.99 a month. As a university student it's a total disappointment from E.B.

Poor navigation and Aggressive ads. They need to wikify their content!

As a quick authoritative reference source it's hard to beat. The articles are fairly concise. But, as others have noted, they lack any links to outside sources. You will only be directed to other articles within the encyclopedia. Also, I think more pictures should be available in many articles. Likewise, videos. It is also lacking in content relative to Wikipedia. If I search "Kennedy assassination" for example, all it pulls up is a very brief article on the Warren commission. On many other topics, there is simply no information available at all. For a subscription app, this really has a long way to go before I could give it five stars. They have to do a lot more than just transfer the contents of the printed encyclopedia books to the web. They need to use the full functionality available to a web based app. The general layout is alright but they really need to be a lot more creative in terms of how they present this.

Apolitical. What a chance for Britannica to shine above its greatest competitor, the politically biased Wikipedia. Please don’t blow it!

Please update. Please update the app. You know what I’m talking about

Outstanding!. This is how an encyclopedia should be. Reliable and easy to use. My kids love to use the map tool to jump between topics. Even with the subscription it's a bargain.

More please. I love this

Fantastic app. It's a joy to have the access to the Encyclopaedia Britannica on my iphone. For the cost of a magazine subscription I have verified, information presented in a quality format. If you enjoy verified facts thisis a perfect app. Definitely one of my favorites.

Amazing content but TERRIBLE design. I'm a librarian, so I take my reference materials seriously. I trust Britannica over any other encyclopedia, hands down. So, the idea of having it in my pocket is glorious. But here's the thing. The user interface of this app is TERRIBLE. To read an article you have to flip these weird cards, which is distracting. And the "tools" tab is just...THERE, hanging out on the left side of the screen, in the brightest possible color. It's the eyesore to end all eyesores. Please, for the love of humanity and knowledge, redesign this app from the ground up so it's actually usable. Because this is really important. Reading the old print volumes (RIP) was a wonderfully immersive experience. This just feels like trash.

This app needs a major update. I love the Britannica content but the app is very outdated for the newer generations of iPhones.

Can't find subscription. I tried to use this app today and was told I don't have a subscription. I checked my Apple account and it shows I do have an account with auto renewal. So I tried several more times to restart my subscription from the app with no luck, still says I don't have a subscription ? So I turned OFF auto renew and now I really don't have a subscription. Also can't find any way to contact customer support for Britannica. As a follow up, I went to the App Support from this page and sent them a message. I will see and report what happens. Just received a call from Britannica rep. They know there is a problem when the subscriptions are suppose to auto renew and they are working on it. They were able to get my subscription working again. I am raising my rating back to 5 stars.

I want my money back.. The app does not work.
