Popular Mechanics Magazine US Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Generally worthless. Since Hearst saw fit to remove the “News” feature, I feel this is is generally worthless to have unless you subscribe to the digital version of the magazine. I get it. They want subscribers, not “freeloading “ readers. I’ll delete the app from my iPad and phone. I can get the mag on Zinio for the issues I want to read the mag.

Good. But a few request.. Layout is nice. I like how you don't have to scroll up & down, what you see on the screen is what is on that page besides some occasional horizontal sliders which work well. When you flip the page however it's like the page freezes for a second then turns, minor issue but kind of annoying. The app crashed on me 4 times (always while turning a page) and I'm not finished reading the entire mag yet. Font size is good, pics & video look great. I love the DIY sections where you can rotate the projects and see the individual pieces with some details on each piece, the horizontal slider that details the assembly without turning to the next page is great. Subscription is a must if you want me to buy more than a couple mags/year though. The bookmark feature is fine but maybe make it accessible from the library view and be able to enter a custom name. That way if I ever have 20 or so issues stored and I don't remember which mag had the DIY article I wanted to come back to, I just go to my bookmarks.

Download offline a joke. I love the mag. However I live in a poor internet environment & I download issues for supposed offline reading, when I’m in the US. Unfortunately they are never available afterwards. Is it a VPN issue or what? It worked fine when it was an app available in the Apple App Store. Though now, I have a library full of mags that need to be downloaded. Throwing money away is always frustrating. You would think with a title like "Popular mechanics", they could fix the app.

Completely broken for days now. Gives cannot load error on WiFi and cell data. Both work fine. Oh and stop writing “articles” to sell crap for advertisers, thanks.

Needs work. I'm a huge fan of PM, the articles are great to read and the interactive aspect beats reading them from an actual magazine. However, there are a few technical problems. Mainly, the crashing happens every 20 pages or so. Also, swiping from page to page gives an unattractive laggy transition. I recall the older version had smooth page transitioning. To me, this effects the appeal of PM And yes, I did restart and reinstall and am still experiencing the same issues.

PopSci App is GREAT!. I have read PS for nearly 50 years starting with my father's subscription (both PS and PM). The added content possible with the electronic edition is amazing, as I still get the paper edition as well it is a great contrast. I can see how the digital edition expands on the story and brings more life to it! Only request would be that I could have my iPad in "landscape mode" or turned horizontal if I choose. Would allow me to see more at one time and other digital magazines I get do this.

Advertise as education ???. I give one star because advertising in this book are too many as pay monthly for education? We don't need ads every other pages per education as we either enjoyed or not enjoyed reading and learning. I would put fewer ads at the very back end of the page. I'm so sick of see ads every where......

App works fine for me on iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.2. Whatever issues others are having with the current release I'm not seeing. No crashes, page turns are quick for an old iPad 3. I suggest they delete the app, do a hard reboot to clear out all caches, reinstall the app and try again. My only complaint that knocks the app down to 4 stars is the layout style they use on some pages require the reader to swipe a thin narrow bar, clearly labelled "Swipe here to change page". I urge them to rethink this page layout style vs user inconvenience of doing a normal page turn swipe multiple times unsuccessfully before noticing the yellow "swipe here" bar. As always I love the content.

What's not to love. If not for the generally negative troll ethos of the app review community, I would be surprised by the negative reviews of PopMech. The experience of reading the magazine and learning about new tech and science and DIY via the tablet edition is a delight. The graphics are clean and original, the navigation intuitive and seamless. I read PopMech in print and on tablet, based on what's most convenient for me at any given time, and I am always impressed by the content, design, and navigation.

Poor handling of subscription. Have paid twice and still cannot open the magazine

Did you forget Landscape Support and More $, Really?. Can it be that you forgot or refuse to support landscape support? Pop Sci supports it, and Pop Mech doesn't? Also I subscribe to print versions of both, and want to read them on my iPad, I could even see paying a small, yes small fee not another whole subscription. Maybe like $5.99 or $3.99/year, we all know that you just want more money and will figure out any way to get it, but I have been a paper subscription member for 10+ years and it's a little frustrating that I have this great tech that you all talk about in your mags but I have to pay again for the "privilege" to read it digitally. Or how about a transfer to digital from paper? And let us keep out current subscription?

Great app, but new version not working.. The interface is not working well on my iPad Pro. ‘Contents” button does not work. Swiping and scrolling do not always work.

David. Need a new update! Can’t read after the last update. Can’t swipe pages.

What?!? Horrible.. I downloaded the "free" app, as I have a print subscription which i thought would allow me to view the iPad edition. NO! It is NOT included, and to top that, the "free" sample I downloaded never opened. They suggested archiving the issue and downloading it again. HOWEVER.....the app kicked me out, and then refused to boot up at all. I instantly deleted the app. If you have lots of money, and love sucky apps, try it.... Otherwise, don't waste your time.... NO STARS.

Love this magazine. I love this magazine and this is a great app(sorta). A lot of people have complained about slow downloads. Ive never encountered this. It does crash occasionally. My main complaint, which is why I'm writing, is that in the full year I've been using this I haven't found a way to exit the issue I'm in so I can select a different issue. It always brings me back to the one I was reading. Seems like a simple button option at the top is all that's needed. This is very frustrating. I don't share the other opinions about cost. The electronic version has features that the paper version doesn't. Clearly a lot of effort and additional cost goes into this. I'll keep subscribing but please fix the bugs

Constantly losing subscription. I'm growing ever so tired of this app losing my subscription. For every new issue coming out, I have to "restore" my subscription info, which doesn't work all the time. The app will also not start up in offline mode. Just prior to writing this review, I boarded an airplane. My iPad was already in airplane mode. I go to open the app, and it gives me a blank screen with an airplane at the bottom, and an error saying it cannot make a connection. What good is downloading content for offline, if the app to read the content will not work offline!

App doesn’t work. I just subscribed and I go to read the digital magazine nut all the shows up on the screen is a white blank page or one that has an empty image place card thing in the upper corner.

It doesnt work. It doesnt work

For Print Subscribers: Forget it - Still does not work !!!!. I have a print subscription to Popular Mechanics and was excited to learn that hopefully, hopefully, this new version would allow us print subscribers log on. This version does not even pretend to have allow access for paid subscribers. Instead, the only provision is to resubscribe through iTunes with another paid subscription. It will likely only be a matter of time before magazines such as this go bankrupt for not accommodating people that already have a subscription. Popular Mechanics should take the lead like Time and Newsweek, which have weekly new editions - both in print and with iPad formats. If a magazine publishes refuses to accommodate this rapidly changing market, they will not likely last much longer. With my subscription, I only subscribed with the thought that I would be able to utilize the iPad version. Unless the publisher changes thier habits, I will not be resubscribing.

Interactive Pleasure. First off, if you are trying to compare or talk about price regarding the paper format, don't bother. At two dollars a month or less, this magazine app is well worth your time and money on its own right. That alone garners a five star rating and me as a happy subscribed customer. The formatting is wonderful, you scroll and activate buttons for bulletins and movies just how you would hope. Moving through all the articles can be a bit weird with the drop down and timeline format on the bottom, but starts to work well enough with a little practice. Issue downloads are a little large but with a decent Internet connection you won't have to wait too long. Using an iPad 2 I have not had any issues with usability or slowness and can only see some improvements in terms of streamlining how you find and view articles that you particularly interested in - perhaps some kind of word cloud. I'm really pleased with the subscription rates and content I get and I think most people will be too.

Too Expensive. I hate to write a review when I haven't even seen one of the magazines, but not only is PM expensive at $3.99 per issue (when compared to paper copy subscription rates), they also don't provide a sample copy to try it out. Organic Gardening and some others let you test the waters with one free issue, but this free download provides only the interface to let you buy and read issues. Digital versions differ from their paper counterparts in that once they are completed, additional copies cost next to nothing to distribute. Perhaps prices will come down once this upfront work is paid for, but for now I'll stick with paper...

Just updated to most recent version of app and now it doesn't work. I've been reading popular mechanics on my iPad for years. I updated the app and now it locks up, then it won't open. Very frustrating. I have to delete the app and reinstall it when it gets stuck. Nothing else works.

Normally, I enjoy it right now I am not…… Look up my occasionally. Occasionally, I want to look up my account,,,, stopping me from doing that… why??…. and I allowed to know when my subscription started, when my subscription ended or is going to end… and several other legitimate questions…. why are you not allowing me access to my account?.. I want access. I’ve tried several things it just goes around and around this oughta be easy…. should have something in the upper right hand corner, little icon, my picture something hit that and everything pops out…. where is my easy access?…

I subscribed. Can’t access anything.. I subscribed. It says I have a subscription and asks for my account and password- which of course it never let me set up a password- so I Can’t access anything. Popular mechanics support has NOT been helpful. All that money wasted.

Popular mechanic. Poor, never works.

Let print subscribers access at no cost! Applies to all magazine apps.. I'm getting pretty fed up between magazines expecting their print subscribers to pay again for app versions and also charging a good bit more again for the print and how every book through iBooks and the app store is always equal to or more than the print version. For books, I'm buying something that's delivered digitally. There's no way it should cost as much or more than a physical version. Same for the magazines but even worse. Magazines make money mostly from advertising. So that means I'm paying once for a print version that the magazine also makes money off of from advertising space they sell but I'm then again expected to pay another time and more money than my print version for the digital version thats again filled with ads. Seems pretty greedy to me and not in any way about what would keep your long time (decades!) subscribers happy and inclined to stick with the brand. Some have gotten it right. Wired, Fortune and Business Week are all great examples of how to do it correctly.

Subscription not for customer but for their's. Multiple times trying to restore purchased articles and, even emailed PM for my paid magazines. The reply I get try to restore again. I'm tired of this b.......t. I also found that their are a couple more that do the same ripping off subscriber's. I'm dropping mostly all of my renewals. No more headaches and, yes backup whatever is left of your magazines. Hopefully when they lose enough customers they'll do the right thing to the new and former subscribers .

Subscription pm in ipad stop working. January 2020 issue never came to be downloaded in i pad and it is already feb 2020. DigitalmSubscription paid up to august 2020. I feel cheated and robbed. A refund would be ok.

It's good, but needs Retina quality. I'm not like most others and think that just because I have a paper subscription that I should get the digital subscription for free. The paper subscription covers the cost of the paper, the digital cost covers the price to digitize everything and make it specifically for the iPad. I enjoy the magazine on the iPad and read it every month. The one complaint that I have with the magazine would be that I would really love to have a Retina quality detail to the magazine and app itself. Now that I have the new iPad, reading the "low quality" magazine is annoying seeing that rest of my magazines are all Retina quality. You guys a big corporation, get it together!

What happened ?. Same great articles as always, but what’s up with all the junk advertisements ?

The way to subscribe. I’m glad Pop Mech has allowed for an all-digital subscription that’s actually better than what you can get in paper form. Many other publications force you to also subscribe to the paper version, which is superfluous with a digital copy. I like how I don’t have to download all the issues onto my device, since all of them are available in the cloud any time. I like being given a choice of how to access the content (as a sort of browser or as a more book-style PDF). This is digital content done right.

Great magazine poor app. This app is terribly unstable and slow. The biggest complaint and the reason for 2stars is due to the apparent auto archiving feature. This wouldn't be to big of a deal if the app would let me re-download my purchases but it does not. When I attempt to a message indicates that all will be well, however it is not. The little downloaded icon turns green for a moment then turns back to grey a moment later. Bottom line if you read your magazine once and do not retread then you will probably be happy. Furthermore the website for suppor will not allow feedback it states that the survey is closed. Maybe they are finished with this app? That wouldn't hurt my feelings at this point but how about a refund for the remaining 9 issues?

Pleased so far, can review and download old magazines. Pleased with the app so far

Finally a subscription option... Finally a cheaper subscription option. A bit more expensive than the paper but I love the user experience, great interactive features something I'll never get from the paper version. Plus LESS ADS than the paper version which makes the $7 extra worth it. I suggest having a sample issue (10 or so pages that shows the different cool features of the magazine) and not just a thumbnail preview of the issues. But other than that, it's a great interactive magazine.

Do NOT buy online! Nightmare!. I decided to get a yearly subscription online and from the very start it’s been a nightmare! From how you “activate” your subscription to getting multiple errors while trying to log in! Not worth the headache

Fixed some issues. At least i can read the articles now. Would be nice if i could actually open the pdf of the nag in my own pdf reader, but this works ok.

Magazine is great. Fix the App. App has always been poor. I’d prefer a pdf rather than the buggy mess that is this app. For the current issue, the app crashes continuously after about the fourth article.

Subscribed but app will not let me download new issue.. I downloaded this app and subscribed to the $1.99 per month plan last month. Was able to download the July issue just fine and loved the app. App gets an update and adds the new August issue but will not let me downloaded it even though I'm a subscriber. The app wants to charge me the cover price of 3.99 even though, again, I am a subscriber. I have 4 r magazine subscriptions on my iPad and none of them have this issue. This is the first one that tires to charge full cover price to a current subscriber. I've email Popular Mechanics app support team twice and they have yet to respond. Only choice left is to cancel my subscription and delete the app. Guess they really don't want month to month subscribers since they try and charge you full price for each issue anyway.

Pure garbage. This app is broken in every sense of the term. Now I have to wait 4-6 weeks for my next paper issue. Rip off

Can’t log in. Visiting on my Chromebook frequently but can never log in with the app, why is this so complicated? Email and zipcode should be easy you think, I guess not

Won’t let me log in. I have tried multiple time to log in via subscription, but it won’t let me. I want the app, and love popular mechanics, but i wish I could actually log in 🤷🏽‍♀️

Subscription just ran out and not renewing. Due to not accommodating paid paper subscriptions and the long history of lack and poor customer service provided by Popular Mechanics I have decided to let my subscription run out and not renew it this time. I had a 5yr prepaid print subscription yet the Popular Mechanics wouldn't allow me to change my subscription from print to digital, allow me access to digital without paying for another subscription, or even allow me access to back issues. Almost every other digitally published magazine (now including Popular Science) allows print subscription access to digital.

New Version is totally useless.. Can’t swipe from page to page, contents button exits magazine, and even when you do get to contents, the links don’t work. I literally cannot read the magazine anyway. Copy some other magazine that works please, like pops science. I hate having different interfaces on every dang magazine I read!

Better than the print version.. I love to buy a copy of Popular Mechanics on my way thru an airport. It's a great magazine with a stellar history of technology journalism that I have enjoyed all my life. I don't remember how much I paid for the last paper issue I bought at the airport newsstand but it was probably five or ten bucks. For the cost of a few paper copies this subscription is worth every penny. It's got interactive media like I always thought electronic information should be presented. The interface is simple and intuitive and the content is first rate. I subscribed to another magazine app and all I got was a copy of each and every page with no extra content at all. Zero. This is how it should be done. If you already subscribe to the print rag then call them up ASAP and tell them to stop sending you dead trees in the mail and give them your money for this instead. Its the future of the magazine style media experience.

Great savings. This is my one remaining digital publication and I am looking to get more. Not only is the price great, but I don’t have to search for it and if I’m done, it isn’t necessary to recycle it. When I go to my summer house, it follows me! However, it has been succeedingly difficult to get my download. I get notes like wrong ID format , notifications of new providers, subscription expired. I’m paid up into 2020 through HEARST on line and about every other issue I have trouble opening the issue. Hearst confirms my script! I still don’t know who is the magazine source or where to turn for help. So I ‘m using this and MAZ and PM that should have been e magazines.

Always the best. Been reading since 1970 but issues going back to 1953 Always enjoy hearing about the latest mechanical developments.

Creating a desire for learning. I am 64 & I have read every issue since I was 10. You appealed to an ability others said I did not have. Today I run my own company and I still apply the message of using your head and your own hands to simplify a complex world. Steve Ricci

Cant read the mag... When will this be fixed . Its at least been since early feb its now may...is anybody home?

Great content, Disappointing app. Update following December 2011 version... Not getting any better. The mag showed blank pages when the thumbnail on the page viewer showed that there should have been content. The interactivity and multimedia integration is downright lacking. I personally dislike the user interface quite a bit. I subscribe to other digital magazines like Wired and really prefer their interface way more. I can't even pop mechs in landscape. Oct2011 I expect to buy the subscription to get the most of digital publications. I feel that 19/yr is a fair enough price. I enjoyed my last subscription of pop mechs in Zino so I gave this publication a chance. I've got to say, I'm extremely disappointed in the format and functionality of the read app. It's very lackluster and clunky... Which is a shame because i really enjoy the magazine. I wish I had just renewed the Zino subscription!

Wow - misleading.... I signed up for a subscription to the Popular Mechanics paper edition based on the mailer they sent that said, "Now you get the digital edition too!". The next sentence says, "Now you can read your POPULAR MECHANICS on your computer, ipad or any PDA, because - along with your glossy print issues - you get your exciting magazines digitally too!" It then goes on to say that you can turn pages with a click, bookmark your favorites, zoom in, share articles, and so forth. I bought a 2 year subscription and got an email saying that I now had access via my Hearst sign-in to all the digital media from all of their magazines. However... as others have noted, this app doesn't allow a sign-in - you must pay for each issue. Also, the link on the website for the digital edition takes me to a place where I can buy a digital subscription (and yes, I did sign in with my user and password first) but doesn't give me any option to view the digital version, and the iPad version link doesn't work at all. The app is exactly what it says above, but it isn't what they said in their advertisements and inducements to buy a subscription. Needless to say, I'm very disappointed. Hearst, fix this - if you are going to sell it, you MUST provide it.

V 1.1.5. From the beginning, this app/magazine has been unstable, always ending in having to delete it, re install and then load issues back again, again, again. If you want to spend lots of time reloading what should be your content, then use this app, it will give you endless hours reloading issues.

And now where is Jan 2011?. We are now into the second week of Jan and still no issue for this month. I could have bought the printed copy almost 4 weeks ago. I like the app but if Hearst is not going to support it by releasing the month issues in a timely manner what is the point!

BE CAREFUL!. Somehow - I ended up with a print subscription. I received a print magazine in the mail about a month after using the app. Going through the junk mail I found a notice from them about a new subscription and an invoice would follow. I don't know how I got that print subscription - but somewhere along the way it happened - probably buried deep in some fine print or a contest or something.

No landscape. This app only works in portrait orientation on the iPad.

Not Free for Print Subscribers? FAIL. Hey Hearst! Time and Conde Nast give print subscribers free iPad versions. When are you going to wake up and do likewise? Nobody is going to pay twice if they already subscribe to the print editions. Oh yeah, and why is it so expensive for digital subs compared to print versions anyway

Buggy. It's fine when it works. Crashes constantly. I am unable to read most months. $20 wasted. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, re downloaded the magazines. But no luck.

Mr.. The worst application ever. Do not install and subscribe. After two years of subscription they want me to buy all issues I've paid for again. I cannot read them and I cannot get my money back. Their team told me that they are working on this problem three month ago for Christ sake and nothing has been change since than.

Crashes often, table of contents doesn't work for some issues,... Buggy!. The only reason I didn't rate it lower is because I do like the magazine. But the app needs a LOT of work.

Great but. When I can get this and pop sci to actually load fantastic, great use of medium, background downloading would be appreciated

Crashes...all the time!!. When it finally works/downloads, the mag is great. But and it's a big but...it can not seem to download a new months mag without crashing and or getting stuck on the unzipping part. More than frustrating!!! Can't and won't give it more than a 1.5 stars... And that's only because the mag is great when it finally works.

$$$$. Too expensive.

Won't launch on ipad2. iPad 2 ver 5.1.1 crashes without ever getting app to open.. After shutting down all apps, and reset.. Still not working. Why I don't update.. I don't want a slower OS. Apple breaks older devices through updates.. I guess they can break them without updating too. Planned obsolescence is suspected.

Must be online to view. Even after you "download" a magazine you still need to be online to view it! How useful is that while travelling? Also, this app has a terrible digital subscription process and UI. Frustrating and impossible to use. Very illogical and not at all user friendly. Content is generally shallow and often 'advertorial'. I am not renewing my subscription.

Old version was way better. Love the magazine but the old version has features that made it feel optimized for reading on the iPad, not sure why they removed all of the features

Crash. Love the magazine, too bad I can't read it because it crashes constantly.

NO RETINA SUPPORT. Looks terrible on the new iPad 3rd gen. A shame really. Cancelled subscription until this is fixed.

Shame on you.. It's really crappy that a magazine that is all about technology can't even move forward in the right direction. Every other magazine has a free digital version if you own a paper subscription. It's silly not too. I mean I tend to give my paper copies out to friends without even opening them because I prefer the digital. I want my friends to like the same things I do. I've got at least 5 friends to get subscriptions to other magazines this way. Just makes good sense to me. Get with the times.

Love the magazine. But where is the December issue in the store?? I had the previous version installed with the November issue, downloaded the update, but nothing new showing up.

This app is garbage. It shuts down for no reason Does not start Do not get it it is not worth the subscription as you can not read it!!! Crap crap crap no stars I would put negative stars if I could.

No Zoom. Surprisingly, there is no two finger pinch zoom feature in this app (which is so common in many other periodical applications). So bring your reading glasses with you if your eyes don't see so well. I won't be subscribing to their digital content for now. Hopefully they will add this basic feature in the future.

Subscription not working. I have paid for a monthly subscription to this magazine for over two months and since the august issue has been released i an unable to download it as part of my subscription. I think none of Hearst subscriptions are working and they don’t respond to email support. Im not very happy!!!

Good Magazine, Horrible App. Every time I try to download a new month the app crashes. I love the magazine but the app needs to be updated. Please fix!

Great mag. Been using since mid dec 2011 works great so nice I can carry my I pad around instead of magazines

Hot tech. PM has been my favourite mag in this class (I've been reading it since the 60's). The digital version gives me all the goodies on my iPad for a great price and with added functionality and detail. Get it !

Missed opportunity. I was hoping there'd be more substance, but it seems to be an example of style over practicality. The annoying techno-fonts and lack of any ability to zoom is making me cancel my subscription after just one issue. I'd rather just read the articles and explore the links without so much conscious effort.

Great magazine.. If you love science and technology this is the magazine for you. Much better than the paper version because there are videos and it is a cool way of showing the information.

Fantastic content, but why the need to be online to access downloaded issues?. The title says it all. Do not understand the need to be online once issues are downloaded. 5 stars if online requirement removed.

Very interractive. Just love the visuals and interractivity of my magazine.

Terrible. This app never seems to work properly. I paid for a yearly subscription and can never seem to access any of the mags.

Awesome!. Finally! Retina support. It's hard to believe how smooth page transitions are with all the animations and Retina resolution. And, the entire January issue is only 93 MB. Well done guys. (The content is as top-notch as always.)

Love it but. Need to add the ability to zoom in on text If I was to download a PDF version illegally and add it to my bookshelf I WOULD be able to do this

No area for existing subscribers to get e- edition. Im not gonna pay again to get the digital edition

Mixed. Love this magazine, but the magazine has been on store shelves for about two weeks and still hasn't been released on the app yet. Should just get the paper subscription, app is too delayed.

Not working. Says there downloaded but it's not there ....what a waste of money. Got the one year subscription and havent been able to use it since iOS 5 !!!! DO NOT BUY ANYTHING TILL THIS IS FIXED

what a joke. i love reading PS...but this app is a joke and they should be embarrassed for putting something like this on the app store..and Apple...what are you doing approving something this bad?

Make it $15.99 per year!. At least they changed the false advertising that said they would give you a free issue. Make it a sensible price of $15.99 per year like Popular Science or you won't get my $$$. I've already been taken for 5.99 for one issue in March!

App crashes all the time, can't open downloaded mags. One of the worst magazine apps I have. I'm sorry I subscribed

No preview. The app let's you look at thumbnails of each story, not even 1 preview article to sample magazine layout. 3.99/ month? No thanks. 11.99/year I would sign up and I'm sure a lot of other people would to. I can subscribe and get a hard copy delivered To my door for $12/ year. Why are you trying to rip off your tech savvy customers?

Run...Run Away!. This was the biggest disappointment I have ever purchased! This App crashes constantly and had to restart my iPad more times than I can coount. It is a memory hog that will drain all resources on your unit. Best of all, Popular MEchanics would never let me download new episodes. I think I got 4 issues of my 12 month subscription. Goodbye Popular Mechanics!

Purchased issues gone!!. I had purchased issues before the update and now they are gone!! I tried to restore but it won't work! This needs to be addressed!!

Unusable. The issues I have downloaded are lost over and over. The restore does not work more often than it works. Once restored the issues disappear again.

Nice app. This is a nice app with a good amount of free content. Of course you have to pay for the full magazine but it costs less than the paper one.

Download Problem. Perhaps my review would be more meaningful if I could actually SEE the December issue I purchased. After about a dozen attempts to download it, I still have nothing. So far, a waste of money.

Lousy app always has been. Not renewing my subscription I am 3 months behind because can't download issues. Horrible

Problem. Just installed the latest version, can't start it, keep on crashing. Damn it...

1 year to fix a major "subscription bug" and still missing issue. Been over 8 months (nov 2012) since a year out of my subscription stopped being able to be downloaded. Latest update still hasn't fixed the problem. Avoid at all cost until they fix the problem. Zero stars if I could. Hearst publications should refund us for our lost year of our subscription. Almost a year and still waiting (oct 2013). Anyone thinking CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT? Nov 2013 finally they have a fix out. App is still broken asking me to buy an issue I already paid for.

Totally misleading paper magazine gets U digital yes or no. I was lead to believe if I subscribed to the paper magazine Popular Mechanics, you also received the digital Ipad version. However, every which way or another, that just aint happening. Maybe its the buttons, its almost as confusing as Popular Science with all the wierd icons. Folks need to explain so all can practice KISS (Keep it simple stupid)

Would be 5 starts except for technical issues. Love the app. Great content, beautiful engaging graphics and interactive features. Problem is that I got a new iPad and can't view old issues. I used the built in restore feature and the old issues appeared to redownload and they now have a tag that says "downloaded" but they don't show up in the library section below and can't figure out how to open them to read them. Anyone else have this problem and figure out a fix?

Take care of current paper PM subscribers. This app needs to allow for current subscribers of the paper version of the magazine to be able to transfer to electronic copy for free, just like Wired magazine did. I feel left out for a whole year while my subscription is current.

Excellent. This app is indicative of why Popular Mechanics are succeeding when so many other traditional American magazines are failing. Very well put together, instantly available, works seamlessly on iOS on an iPad or iPhone. And the magazine itself is as cutting edge and informative as ever. Nice to see some things never change! Definitely recommended. 5/5 Stars!

Very disappointed. Looked at 3 paper issues. I've seen more skill & inventiveness in 1927 PM issues than current articles that lend me to believe men now days don't even know how to hammer a nail. Three PM locations for "create password" the web page buying a digital subscription, then sign in on my I-pad, then change password via e-mail link, ALL have different requirements! One requires a capital letter, another you cannot use a symbol like $, and one min 6 digits, another more didgets! What do you call a mag that can't manage its password requirements!

iPad3. I'm a first time user of this app. I waited long enough to get an iPad in order to be able to get this great mag electronically, and I am impressed with how cool this version is compared to it's paper equivalent. Can't see myself switching back. Hope you guys get to update quickly to Retina display so that the text will become clearer. As always, great mag.

Love the mag!. I've been buying Popular Mechanics off magazine racks for years now and finally decided to subscribe to the electronic edition. I love it; it's very user friendly and allows you to save your favorite articles and tips into albums. Definitely worth the subscription price.

App crashes. I love this app when it works. The problem is that the iPad crashes 90% of the time. It gets stuck loading the issue, and then crashes. Not sure if his is because I have an original iPad or not, but for such a great magazine, it could do better. Hard to want to pay when it insanely difficult to even open the app.

Better than Paper. I am impressed with the electronic version of PM. The polish and extra features shows that the e version isn't just a direct port from the paper version, but that the articles are deliberately made to be enhanced by the IPad. Turning labels on and off, additional photos, higher detail and more content are all available. And I don't need to find a place in the garage to store all of the back issues.

P.M. REALLY NEEDS TO ALLOW PRINT SUBSCRIBERS DIGITAL ACCESS!!!. I don't know why, but popular mechanics does not allow print subscribers (I'm 10+ years) to also view on e readers,iPad, etc...I just wonder WHY ? Do they really expect me to subscribe TWICE.? C'mon pop. Mech. Right now, you are the ONLY publication I subscribe to that doesn't allow this. Please change this policy. It'll just keep your legion of "technology minded" customers happy with your product....or at least offer a dual subscription at a discounted rate.

Paper for ever. $20 for something I will be able to read whenever I want in next twenty years, sure I'll buy it. I still go through my paper magazines a year or two sometimes multiple times after ten years as here is always something nice to read. With this after a year if you do not renew your subscription you loose it. Definitely not worth the money. Now a patented by me suggestion: if you are paid subscriber during the such period any such article you will be able to read for the rest of your life. And it is also transferable.

Pop mech. One of the best examples of digital publishing. Makes you understand why tablet magazines can get people so excited. Navigation is elegant but never gimmicky. Loads of content is efficiently tucked into handsome buttons and icon while always remembering that a page should be well designed above all.

Love this magazine, one snag. The cover page for some issues gets 80% loaded but then never finishes. Everything else works great though. Not a huge deal because the cover isn't really something you read.

Convenient. It's so much easier to carry around how ever issues I want and not feel the weight of the paper issues. It would be 5 star for me IF you could use your current subscription number to access your current subscription (like WIRED does) instead of having to buy each one you want or buy a whole new subscription all together.

Pop mech rev 2. I love having digital copies. I can take years worth of different magazines with me in the size of an iPad which is smaller then a single magazine. Easy to use, maneuver to whichever page you wish easily and tab pages you like. As long as you aren't too old school and need everything on paper it is a good app and saves trees. Otherwise simply buy the original magazine if digital format bothers you :)

Fast Loading - Great Read. I've been reading the Popular Mechanics magazine since 1967 and I still love it. The digital version downloads at lightning speed because it's zipped (unlike other digital magazines I subscribe to). Highly recommended!

Digital version costs more than print. Why?. It costs you guys LESS (no ink, paper, mailing, etc.) to "publish" this iPad version, yet even at a yearly subscription of $20, it is still far pricier than the print version. I bought one issue just to try it out and while it's nice, it's certainly not worth the extra cost. I'll stick to the paper version until you wise up on the pricing.

Magazine Subscriptions. I really do like reading Popular Mechanics magazines so I wanted to order a subscription via mail and now I can't access my subscription in the app making me pay for the magazines that are setting in front of me. I would like this to be fixed in the next update.

Broken after last patch. It was working fine on ios5, but then they released a patch for bug fixes and completely broke the entire program. You can't download issues after you buy them, and if you uninstall and reinstall, it deletes your old issues and will not allow you to redownload them. When you try, it says it knows you've already purchased them, and to click ok to download again. When you do, nothing happens. The buy link grays out and you never get the green download link. This app is total junk now. Glad I didnt subscribe or I would have lost even more money.

What?!? NO STARS.

Sloooooowwww. This app is getting progressively slower with each and every update. I'm one of the "old timers" stuck on the first generation iPad and this magazine now crashes every single time I attempt to load it... Nevermind retina displays and other fancy doo-dads- how about the ability to view a product I paid for? I find myself attempting to load PM, watching the magazine app crash, then going back in and loading the current issue of popular science instead. If this isn't resolved in short order, I can't in good faith suggest this electronic magazine to anyone.

Kind of buggy. Lost all my downloaded magazines and could not retrieve them. The app was completely non-functional. Nothing worked to correct the issue except deleting the app, restarting the iPad, reinstalling it and finally downloading the magazines all over again. Great when it works. I'm rooting for you because I prefer to get may magazines this way. When something like that happens, just as I'm going on a trip where I won't have internet access, paper starts looking good again.

Good content is never free!!. To all those who keep complaining that you can't get any magazines for free, do you complain at the grocery store about having to pay for food too? It still costs money to hire good writers and photographers and developers and such. So yea, the magazine is not free, but it has great articles with really good photographs that are well worth paying a few dollars for.

Why does Popular Mechanics contract with Hearst?!. Hearst is either deliberately committing fraud, or completely incompetent. Either way, don't waste your time and money. How Hearst can stay in business taking money and not providing their service is beyond me. I subscribed and was never able to download a single issue. I made the mistake of wasting time with customer service who seemed content to endlessly ask me to repeat the same steps I tried before I contacted them. DON'T SUBSCRIBE! PM - find a new company to distribute your fine magazine!

Download. While the content is good and some of the graphics are good as well, this is a difficult to use magazine. Despite being on automatic download, downloads of new issues need to be initiated manually and then take forever. There seem to be some serious flaws in the way this was developed. For a tech-mag, that's very disappointing. It's understandable why there is no refund policy in place after one has subscribed for a year of waiting for downloads ....

Better than print. No, I'm not a print subscriber, but have read the mag for years. I am a digital subscriber and I am extremely satisfied. The interactive features and videos make it so much better than print. Granted, if you subscribe to the print editions, you probably aren't going to get your money's worth. I haven't had any issues with crashing like others mention.

Popular mechanics. We all know about the magazine, but have you read it on a smart phone or mobile device? If not check it out you won't be disappointed.

Popular Mechanics. Great magazine, great graphics, articles and animation. I enjoyed the monthly subscription savings so I purchased the full year to save even more per issue. However the upgrades have not reduced the number of full back-to-cover-reload crashes! So, you have until June 2013 to solve it or Zinio gets my business. Hey, good news, you get nine months to fix it! People produce baby's in nine months so I would think you should be able to fix a software program in the same time? Good luck!

Subscription problems downloading new issues. As others have stated, there is a serious problem with downloading new issues when you have an active annual subscription in that it asks you to pay a fee as if you don't have a subscription. The app itself runs the previously downloaded issues fine, media and other content work well, landscape would be nice but not a deal breaker. Must get the new issue problem fixed ASAP!

New to digital magazines. I've been a Popular Mechanics reader for a long time. It keeps getting better and better. The app has nice content links and loads pages quickly. I like the option of being able to view a thumbnail of the pages and save single pages. It would be nice to download issues to archive for future reference.

Paid for issues that won't appear. App worked fine when I first got it a few months ago...after ios5 it all went to cr@p. None of the issues I paid for appear anymore, and downloading the issues again wouldn't work. I was hoping this newest update would resolve the issue, no dice, same problem. I emailed tech support and they said something about resetting all my preferences or something...haven't tried it yet but as of right now, I CANNOT recommend this app. Very sad, as it's beautiful when it works.

Doesn't fully download content for offline viewing. I subscribe to several digital magaines. This interface/app is my least favorite. Even though you download the magazines to your device they don't actually fully download. Instead it finishes the download only when you try to read or view that page. So for offline viewing it's pointless.

Don't purchase subscription. I purchased a year. Got 3 months, now I'm removing the app, reinstalling, restoring purchases and wasting my time. I want my money back. Guess what! They do not care. They (pop mechanic) tell you that your subscription cannot be canceled. very poor customer service, even with the app not working they send you a legal document showing you that you cannot cancel and subscription renews automatically. I love the magazine, but give me something that works and don't shove it down my throat.

Great experience. Loved the first issue...really loved the second. Great navigation, graphics....just right amount of video and animation. Another 5 out of 5! Just want to have the subscription option......when does that appear????

YOU BROKE IT!!!. C'MON! My subscription JUST auto renewed 3/23. Problem is, there's basically NO APP. Apple may have to get involved in refunds if this isn't fixed ASAP. This isn't some piddly little game that costs a couple of bucks. This app WAS working just FINE, so what did you do?!? I have never, EVER given such a low rating. But this is just flat out unacceptable! I WILL be happy to update with a good rating as soon as the app actually works again. OH, and btw, I used to get the print edition a few years ago. If I were still receiving it, I would be SUPER TICKED just like a LOT of people who have a paper subscription and are asked to pay again for the digital format. That is just plain messed up! You should really follow National Geographic's example on that one! GET IT TOGETHER PM!!!

A Digital Magazine from the ground up.. PM has done an amazing job converting it's print version into a new and compelling experience. I hope they continue to move foward and find a good balance between gimmicks and content. A cheaper subscription model would also be great but it's something I can see them doing down the line once they have a few issues under their belt.

Agrivating. Frankly, I don't care about retina, I care that every time I start the app I'm faced with a blank white screen. After waiting to see if it's just "thinking", I decide to "restore...". When that actually does something, it "takes longer than usual". I read other mags, that don't do this. They just show a list of all available, and give me a choice to download the issues I don't have locally. That WAY better. I've decided that I'm going to cancel my subscription if the start screen doesn't get better.

Interactive dimension is huge. PM understands the potential the web brings to magazines better than any other publisher. Case in point: their article on earthquake proof buildings is much better here than on paper. Kind of a whole new dimension to publishing.

Get with the "Program". It is imperative that PM includes auto-rotate with this app. This will increase the utility of this 10 fold. I cancelled my subscription because it is frustrating to have to remove my device from my Zagg in order to read the magazine. I agree with others that high def retina resolution is not too much to ask for at these prices. Photos, content, and articles are all GREAT with out the features mentioned the overall experience is mediocre! If you want 5 stars I would say it's guaranteed with said upgrades. LF Auto rotate please!

Do not purchase a subscription. By far the most frustrating app out there. I waste 1.99 a month on a subscription I simply cannot access. Every month it wants me to purchase the new issue, despite my subscription. When following the directions to "restore purchases" it says I don't have one. When it actually does work, it is a great magazine, but I've only been able to access it twice this year. Worse, there are several people saying the same thing, which means these providers don't care but still take your money- you simply cannot get a worse app situation

Stuck in 2010. This app is stuck in 2010. There is no support for the Retina display which gives blurry text. The app also doesn't play we'll if you are trying to listen to music while you try to read the magazine. Since there is multimedia content, your music will stop if the is any content containing audio on the page, whether it's playing or not. There should be an option to help manage this.

Needs Retina support. Downgraded to one star for completely ignoring retina display in the latest update. I thought PM was a technology magazine? You'd never know it from their app. Pitiful. Previous review: Have always loved Popular Mechanics and recently switched to the iPad version. The content is great, but the lack of support for the new iPad Retina display is disappointing. Characters are not sharp, making smaller type more difficult to read. Hopefully, the publisher will rectify this shortcoming to give the reader the best possible experience on high resolution devices. For now, three stars.

Does not download the recent magazines. It used to be quite good, but now it just doesn't work. It is just unable to download the recent monthly editions. I am still working with customer service for the past week to resolve the issue. They seem to be clueless.

Lost features. I purchased a certain issue so I could run a feature in that issue. However, the new version of the program REMOVED that excellent interactive--one of the best elements in the touch/tablet version of the magazine! I'm very disappointed that this new version provides FEWER cool features than the older version. I would seriously like to see that feature restored -- or receive a refund. If you have an older version, I would recommend you NOT upgrade. I wish I could get that older version of the program back.

Retraction. I was mistaken on the subscription option. In order for the new issue to show up as paid for you'll have to hit the missing issues button on the top right and then Restore. This will allow the new issue to be shown as a downloadable option, and not for the 3.99 price.

great magazine. First, everyone needs to understand that *all* magazine apps are free, and most have paid issues/subscriptions. Rating a magazine 1 star because of this is silly and misleading. This is an excellent magazine, great crisp images and interactive content, an easy-to-use interface, and intriguing stories. I would like to see this magazine (and all magazines for that matter) become universal across iOS devices.

Creative but buggy. A very creative magazine with outstanding use of text, multimedia, and navigation. The articles are very useful when you could read it. I am using iPAD 1 and the graphics is superb. The application is unstable. It collapses often and in non-repeatble manner. To finish reading one article, I had to restart the application more than five times. The funny part is the application asks for a survey which I completed except for the last step when it collapsed.

No Love for the Print Subscribers. Really?! People who were too foolish to be fans of your magazine since you only published in print get no dual complimentary electronic subscription? Lots of publishers do it. Y'know? Publishers who appreciate their customers. Don't you know that you make the lion's share of your profit through advertising? Thus, it's to your benefit to keep your subscribers happy so they keep renewing and you get to keep boasting about your high subscriber numbers to potential advertising business. Guess its time I stop being so generous with my hard-earned money since you can't throw your subscribers a bone.
