The Elements by Theodore Gray App Description & Overview

What is the elements by theodore gray app? From Theodore Gray comes a beautifully produced app introducing and educating users on the elements of the periodic table and how they combine to form the world around us. The Elements is a rich and engaging love story, told in words and pictures - allowing you to experience the beauty and fascination of the building blocks of our universe in a way you've never seen before.

Start off on a living periodic table where every element is shown with a smoothly rotating sample. To read about gold, tap the gold nugget. Immediately you see the sample filling the screen, photographed to razor sharpness and rotating around a complete circle in front of your eyes. Enjoy the extensive array of facts and figures. Next find a fascinating story about the element, surrounded by carefully photographed objects representing it. Every one of these objects, well over 500 in total, is a freely rotatable, live object that you can examine from all sides and pinch zoom to see in unprecedented detail.

Touch the element name at the top of the page and you can see that element’s name in over a dozen different languages. Choose one and you’ll find that the entire book, stories, captions and all, switches to that language: The Elements includes both the full English original text and over a dozen full translations.

Pinch-zoom or tap any object to bring it up full screen, where you can split into a pair of stereo 3D images, allowing you to see all 500 objects pop off the screen in 3D, and you can spin the objects, in 3D, with the touch of a finger.

This book will show everyone there’s a lot more to the periodic table than a bunch of numbers and letters.

Features include:

• Beautifully composed pages for every Element in the periodic table
• Fun stories and fascinating facts
• All objects pinch-zoom with amazing detail and rotate in 3D
• Engaging introduction explaining the structure of the periodic table
• Engaging introduction explaining the structure of the periodic table
• Fully translated into English, Catalan, Croatian, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish

Douglas Adams would be proud.. This app is deserving of any respect and honor a scientific mind could offer. it’s a masterpiece of modern technology & wit. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

A Wonderful App/E-Book for the Inquisitive. Buy This App. A work of art, and of science. I highly recommend it, but don't be discouraged by the (mentioned elsewhere) crashing. I don't regret the purchase nor price tag of this app, but I do hope the author is monitoring these comments to realize there is still a problem. (I could very well expect an iOS bug just as likely as a coding error by the author—this application "goes where no e-book has gone before" and I imagine it is pushing the limits for now.) I do look forward to future works by this author, too...hint, hint: MMa for the iPad? Regards.

Nice app. Educational and interesting

Dont get this app. I bought this app in the past, they performed an update. After the update the application no longer worked on my iPhones or my iPad. I will be forced to buy this application again if I want to use. I tried contacting their customer support and it is nonexistent. So unless you want to buy this app every time they do an update don’t buy it. Go with the free apps, you’ll be much happier as this application doesn’t provide any more data than the free applications in the App Store.

A helpful app.... I've been really enjoying this app. As a G. Chem student, it definitely helps bring to life the words in the textbook. And it's pretty fun to show people...with decent attention spans. It IS on the more expensive side, but personally I find that it's worth it. As far as the persistent crashing is concerned, I too experienced the frustration. Especially after the update. However, I read some reviews about rebooting the iPad (by holding down the sleep/wake and home buttons), tried it for myself and...WALA, it's been rock solid since. Many thanks to the developers!

Great. I am old fart who paid more attention to music (sax & keyboards) and sports, than science when I was in high school. My loss. Things often change when you get older. Anyway, this book is phenomenal, and shows what textbooks could be like in the future. Believe me, if this had been available when I was in high school, I would have done a lot better in chemistry, and paid a lot more attention, than I did. Of course, there would have been a lot fewer elements included in the book. This interactive book is worth every penny.

The way books should be. A superb demonstration of the potential of the iPad. If more books of this sort were of this quality, I'd be happy to shell out the (relatively) hefty price. But then again, compared To what the typical iBooks book is going for, offering nothing but static printed pages, Elements is a bargain. Hoping this developer comes out with more titles! My only criticisms of this app is that it does crash periodically. And I'd like to see a more interactive view of the periodic table itself that describes the various classes/groups of elements (rather than only taking you to the individual element pages).

An Absolute Must-Have. Although this app makes a great showcase to impress your friends with your newest iOS device, it goes far, far beyond that. Specifically, what makes this App amazing is Mr. Gray’s fantastic descriptions of each and every element. Concise, accurate, and most of all, interesting, I directly attribute my son’s love of science to this App (and later Mr. Gray’s works in print). I have purchased over 500 Apps since I bought my first iPhone but The Elements stands out as my single favorite purchase. You will get lost in this, especially if you have children. Buy it.

LOVE The Japanese Version of "The Song" 👏😀. As well as being a FANTASTIC GRAPHICAL AND TEXTUAL information resource for the Periodic Table, I have to admit that I will sometimes just run the App to hear the Japanese Version of the "Element Song"! Plus, don't forget their Molecules app as well! Having SCIENCE with a SENSE OF HUMOR is GREAT, as well as being VERY WELL DONE! Scientists, TAKE NOTE!

Good, needs an update. I loved this app, it was very well done, and the photography was splendid. But there are some new elements that need to be updated, and I have some ideas: Nihonium: Flag or coat of arms of Japan Moscovium: Same thing but with the Moscow Oblast Tennessine: Same thing but with Tennessee Oganesson: A picture of Yuri Oganessian Thanks, bye, great job! :D

AWESOME. First off... yes the app takes up a gig or more of space. BUT this is the more beautiful well done app I have ever seen! Even if you don't take chemistry this is a beautiful tool to show not just chem students but children alike. I am starting Chemistry in college shortly which is a requirement for my degree field in Nanotechnology, and because of this app i cannot wait to start! Most of the complaints on here you will notice are on the space it takes, not the app itself which is amazing. Purchase it and you will see why it takes up about 2.5 GB.... cause it is amazing. ALSO: With syncing you can just sync the program to your ipad when you need it, seeing as how you won't be saving anything to this program anyway. AND for those complaining about this app size, one movie takes up about the same amount of space, and even more if you get the HD version. Just get it you won't be sorry. Well done to this app developer

20********************. Five stars is way too few. This app raises the bar. I teach Lower School science and have video of fifth grade boys dancing to the elements song while looking at one of the three posters we have related to this app. But now! I can't wait until school starts, and we just got out for the summer yesterday, to show this to the students next year. If the poster and the song got them that interested in becoming familiar with the range and characteristics of the elements, imagine the exploration when our posters come alive. You have spoiled me for all my other apps. Thank you for your work, your dedication, and your creativity and for and from all the students in the future who will understand and enjoy chemistry in a way we never thought possible.

😀. I love this app! I have so much fun with it!

Nice support and a great App!. Not many apps are supported for a decade but this app will be. They’ve remained committed to it and many are grateful!

Great Product!. This is probably the coolest application I have ever downloaded for educational purposes, there are great discriptions of each element and the pictures are very high quality. My only complaint is that when you purchase the application for your iphone it is not compatable with your macbook and you have to buy another $20 application. its really conveninet to have on your phone so you can pull it up throught the day, but in class or while doing homework the computer version would be much more efficent, I dont think users should pay for both platfoms.

Beautiful app. Needs a couple of tweaks.. This is a gorgeous app, with a wealth of information that's presented in an extremely engaging fashion. If I'd had this in high school, I might actually have stayed awake during Chemistry. It does need a couple of tweaks to be perfect, however. First, it only rotates into Landscape mode in one direction, so that if you're using the Apple iPad case in its "propped up" configuration, The Elements is upside down. Secondly, the app needs to be updated to include element 117, which was announced today. But I think I can let the devs off on that one...for a while, anyway. ;)

Amazing app. This app is engaging and beautifully done. Not just for chemistry students! We have the book and I'm glad we got the app too. Recommend it for all ages! Even my preschooler and elementary school kids are fascinated with and play with this app. We got the parallel Elements Flashcard app and it is a game to them.

Amazing. This has got to be one of the most brilliant educational apps for the iPad. Even if you think you aren’t into chemistry or physics, the pictures and stories make this VERY worthwhile. Check it out!!

Pretty, but that’s it.. Cons: -HUGE: 1.7GB for high resolution images that rotate that could be just as easily shown in 1-4 images each (instead of the 40+ of each object). -COSTLY: $9 for information that is easily obtained anywhere, like Wikipedia (or WolframAlpha which it even links to). (For example, the amazingly useful and slick “Sky Guide AR” app is only $3) -LACKING INFO: each element has a few interesting tid-bits crammed in the main page (for example, you can’t expand the emission spectrum graph), and then a short paragraph or two overview on the next page. It just leaves you wanting more info that just isn’t there. Pros: -Well packaged, slick interface I got it to encourage my daughter to get interested in the elements, but interest quickly fades after seeing “ooh, the images spin”. I’d still give it only 3 stars if it were 100MB and $1. Save yourself memory/space on your device and money, skip this app that’s just bells and whistles, and just use Wikipedia or something else.

Storage hog!. This is a beautiful app, the look/ feel/ responsiveness are all top notch and it's well worth the price. But here's the thing, unlike many (more well designed) apps, all of the content is stored on the iPad rather than on a remote server. Storage on our iOS devises is valuable stuff, in fact the average cost per Gb is about $15. In my opinion his is a high price to pay to store local data on my iPad when this app could consume less than 20Mb of space. Basically my complaint being that I don't need this data "offline" enough to warent the size it consumes. It's a fantastic app with an equally fantastic flaw. I hope to see the content moved to an online server in some upcoming version.

The must-have science app.... Even if you know nothing about chemistry! I wish I had this back when I was in high school. The graphics were really good and worked without any internet connection, which I appreciated.

Good. Good but, how do I change to Celsius to farinhieght?

Amazing app!!! But it NEVER crashed on me.. I usually get too bored playing normal apps. This the best thing to use especially when I get bored. Also, when I don’t have the book itself (yes I do have the book this app is based on). I am not sure if (other ;3) kids would like this but...at least I do...

Amazing app. This is such an amazing app. I was stunned by the great graphics, the enormous amount of information and has not crashed once on me in several weeks. I think the last update (Version 1.0.2.1) has improved the crashing. Also love the stereo images -- they really POP if you put your eyes in the right orientation. The easiest way for me was to cross my eyes just a bit and then the two images fuse and voila - you have 3D!! Thanks so much for such a wonderful iPad experience. The photographs are amazing and of the highest quality (this is the main reason it's such a big download I think) and really love Tom Lehrer's song. WIsh the lyrics were included (but there is all the images in the right sequence and synched to the song) and that you could rewind/fast-forward the song to specific positions, as it gets tiring listening to the entire song every time. Perhaps adding a normal QuickTime scroll bar to the movie? I really wish all e-books had this much thought and imagination applied to their content - this is a truly amazing example of what e-books should aspire to.

Shows the power of the iPad. This is a wonderful app!! This is what the iPad is all about. This is educational, fun, amusing and visually stunning. Makes me wish I had paid more attention in chemistry (but, then, I had a dull teacher). I've had this over two weeks and have used it many, many times with never a crash. I'm not sure what's causing this with other users, but it may be something interacting with remnants of other apps left in memory. I've found that after using some apps (mostly games), it's good to reboot and clean out memory. This is a bargain at 14 bucks; I'd pay twice as much for it if I had to.

As good as the book! A must-buy for all ages!. Having known the author and collector behind the photos in this application and the book it is based on, as well as being a fan of the monthly "Gray Matter" article in Popular Science, I highly recommend this app as an excellent source of information on all the elements, as well as an awe-inspiring picture book of the building blocks of our universe. I would love to see more photos of the elements, as seen on the website, and more examples and stories about them. As the app stands, it is simply stunning. 5/5 Stars for Excellence!

Update the UI. Please update the UI to match modern apps, you’re still using skeuomorphic buttons and the like.

These are the apps you were looking for. So you bought your shiny new iOS device with all that extra storage? Excellent decision! Because this is a classic example of what kind of app belongs on your iPhone or iPad. You and your family will enjoy using this, and appreciate the thought and care that went into those animations. (I also own the gorgeous print edition of this book, the app just gets more reading time and general use) It is informative and fun to read and even little ones will like spinning crystals and other elemental objects while you explain their significance. Little Scientists need to start somewhere! The fact that I can carry these (I also own the companion apps -they're different but so worth it) all on my phone and get them on my iPad too at no extra charge (same account) is truly amazing.

Very enjoyable reading about and looking at the elements. I waited a while before updating as a few reviews reported problems afterward. But I just upgraded and everything works fine. This book is very nicely done. The pictures are very beautiful and the rotation very fluid. I have to laugh at the complaint that it is a memory hog as the app size is right in the info under the buy icon. This is a good "break" book as you can read and look at the elements and objects a little at a time. The author has a good sense of humor and overall I like the commentary on the elements. I have no regrets on my purchase of this app.

The future in publishing, but here today.. Other than a feature to permanently silence the song, which is good for one listen, this is nearly perfect. If you have any interest in the elements that make up yourself and the universe around you, get it. Many have asked whether the iPad is more than just another ebook reader. This app demonstrates how powerful a teaching tool the iPad can become with a properly constructed app. I can't wait to see a biochemistry, physics, or math text book made in this fashion. When they appear, those of you with the foresight to buy a 64GB iPad will find total satisfaction.

Simply Amazing. The Elements and WolframAlpha are enough to buy an iPad. The word "Elegance" doesn't even touch these apps. While I'm currently obtaining a degree in Computer Science, my thirst for knowledge of mathematics and physics as become unquenchable. These apps help to supply some aid to that hunger. The addition to the opening song about the periodic table of elements at the beginning of this application acts as a study guide for myself in memorizing these! Nothing but 5/5 stars all the way, big application or not, it will continue to stay on my iPad for the remainder of it's life.

Literally the best thing ever. Theodore Grey is an amazing writer and this shows. It is basically the book (which I love to death, it is the reason why I love chemistry so much I decided to major in it) except with moving 3D images and an awesome song! Highly recommend. If I could suggest one thing, I wish that this app included the extra info that is is the iPad version, but this is still awesome! 6/5

Waste of Money. You pay $20 for the Periodic Table that can be looked up online for free

Intriguing. I just finally got around to buying this after having been interested in it since it's debut. Apart from a few low resolution 3D captures it's perfect. It really shows what touch media can do and i hope that developers will continue to embrace the format and offer up high quality interactively functional media. The one thing i would love to have in this app, it a basic text window, either an transparent overlay, or window that would allow for note taking, or whatever text one might feel a need to write about that could be saved as iPad text files etc. iPod integration would be nice too, I'd like to listen to music while studying or viewing the app. Some have complained about crashing? I've viewed nearly all the elements without problem. I think it's a great app, A lot of work went into formatting etc, so i'd say it's worth the money.

Beautiful Book; may need to reset iPad to make it work. I initially had problems with this application crashing but got quick technical support from the developer in which he advised me to reset my iPad (essentially, turn it off and turn it back on again) and the problems cleared up. I'm now able to read and interact with the book without it crashing. He also told me that they are working on an update to the application to deal with low memory situations which is a potential cause of the crashes that everyone is reporting. Having surmounted that problem, the book is beautiful and informative and I can't wait to share it with my nine year old this evening!

Great, but expensive. Pro: It's a great multimedia app, localized to a lot of languages, including Russian. It's best with Elements in Action application. You can really feel each element: scientific data, pictures, stories and (with EiA) videos. Cons: It takes too much memory, so this app is often the first candidate for deletion. Could we use some compression technology "on the fly", unload unused languages, have a choice of high/low resolution? Also the price is too big by AppStore standards. Advice / feature request: it would be nice to see atoms and crystal pictures as larger 3D models. Also the way to change pages is counter-intuitive.

Beautiful eye candy, thin on content. While the photos are beautiful, the text content leaves much to be desired. It is long on the author's personal opinion, commentary, and anecdote; short on facts, history, chemistry, industrial applications and commercial information. Personally I never get tired of reading the venerable CRC Handbook section titled "The Elements". My suggestion is to license that content and make it available in the application. In fact that is sort of what I was hoping to find here. I don't regret spending the money for the app, but mainly it is valuable to me because I already have deep knowledge in chemistry and physics. To a student, or someone coming from another field, I think it would have much less value.

Unable to purchase complete bundle. The element program is wonderful and provides visuals and history and knowledge of the stuff the world is made of. My disappointment was when the App Store would not allow me to buy the 3 app bundle. I sent email to company and they have been slow to respond. It is frustrating that I tried to purchase the entire bundle and it only downloaded the element app. I hope it's not some incompatibility to iPad Pro or the latest iOS. I was also noticing the 3D ability would glitch and only rotate one of the two images, so it would pop in and out of 3D. The images would not turn in synchronization and even freeze. Minor issues I hope they get resolved.

It's Gone. I downloaded this huge program and enjoyed using it for the visual effects to show people. It started acting erratically and one day I noticed it had changed color (kind of dull looking) and would not work. After a couple of days to see if it would recover, I erased it thinking I could download again, free. When I try to download, the program tells me it is installed and won't let me redownload. My biggest gripe is to try and find someone to help me. I've sent emails and tried to find a place for someone to listen to my sad story but no one cares. So, I paid for the program, had it fail, erased it but can't get another because Father Apple says it's still on my iPad. A few months later and this program came back magically. Now same crap is happening and no one cares. It's sitting in my iPad half loaded and refuses to download any more All I want to do is to get it fully loaded so I can delete the piece of crap once and for all.

Elements is nice.... Touch Press is great and all, but please don’t brand each app icon. It’s an eyesore.

Wish I had known the file size. Before purchasing. It just isn't practical to tie up that much of the iPad for this, as neat as it (probably) is. Frankly I never downloaded it, and tried to get a refund. Apple wasn't interested in providing one because I categorized the complaint as "Application does not perform as expected" (meaning the filesize is ridiculous). Whoops! There went $14 (very expensive for an App). Maybe if I was taking a chemistry class it would be worth hogging all that storage for this, but basically I wasted my money and feel a bit ripped off.

Excellent, Engaging and Fun. I bought this to further my nine year-old son's interest in science. He loves it, and so do I. The text is very interesting, and written to be fully understood by someone with no scientific background. The author's enthusiasm is infectious, the photographs are fantastic and his enthusiasm is addictive. To be clear, this app is an introduction to the Elements. It has one or two pages devoted to each element, with very beautiful photographs. Every photo was made from 360 degrees, and will rotate if you flick it. It doesn't replace a chemistry textbook by any means. I highly recommend this beautiful and interesting app.

What is the purpose of this app? Seriously.. Initially, I thought this was a very nice app. Pleasant to look at and fun to figure out what tapping on each thing does. But now I wonder what the purpose of this app is. It seems like it's half coffee table book (with the glitzy video and images) and half dense, technical reference loaded with bazillions of tiny facts without any kind of context. The only real context or instructional material is a 3-4 paragraph section on the second page (and it took me a while to figure out how to get to that second page, since the direction arrows at the bottom of the page look like they take you to the next or previous element). Yes, it's interesting, but I can't say that I've learned all that much. Another thing: every time there's an update to the program--even for tiny bug fixes--you have to redownload 1+ GB of data, too. That may be Apple's fault, but they need to figure out a solution. And for god's sake, put a Stop Animations button on it. After a while of exploring, the animations get old. Real old. Not to mention I'm sure it kills the battery.

Update?. How about an update? There are at least some new element names...

Missing something.... Doesn't feel like an essential (lol) app anymore. There's nothing that cannot be found in his Elements In Action and a good reference app like EleMints or Wolfram-Alpha proper. Missing mass spectroscopy lines and other pertinent info that is included on the flashcards (paper, not app) & book. Kinda clunky in its display, though it loads smoothly. Ok app in the $3-5 range, not more. Not sure how much it took to produce this, so I do not want to discredit the designers & author; I do enjoy the paper flashcards & book. But I won't mince words: I don't remember there being info cribbed from Wolfram-Alpha in the physical copies or this app in 2010; even if it makes it easier to keep entries up to date, I would have liked to have seen the original info; or entries comparable to other periodic apps. Seemed the book was less minimalist. It's cool to see actual examples, but I wanted more.

Problems Update. The Elements is a wonderful book for the iPad. It is informative and beautifully rendered. However, the recent update causes it to crash at almost every change of page. This is disappointing, because there is so much to learn from The Elements. Another disappointment is the fact that I ordered the special glasses for viewing 3D, but alas they never arrived. Excellent start, so now, let's update and polish this app - please! I want to amend the above review. Today I synced with my desktop computer, and the iPad version of The Elements has not crashed since. Also, in today's mail, the 3-D viewer arrived. Thus, my change from 3 stars to 5 stars. It is really a remarkable app!!

Fabulous. The Elements: A Visual Exploration. This app is big, beautiful, and expansive in scope and information. When bought with it's sister app, "The Elements in Action" you can view the stats and read about each in "the Elements" then toggle to view them in use or "Action". The text is comprehensive, and the photos - which can be viewed and rotated in 3D are stunning. This is really a terrific learning tool for older elementary students through adults. Since I bought the sister app at time of purchase, I do not know if there is IAP for it. There are no ads or links. Highly recommended.

118. There are 118 elements on the periodic table. I can only view 103.

Persian Language 🇮🇷. Please fully support this app for Iranian and add Persian language 🇮🇷 More than 110M people speaking Persian but no Persian language in the app...

Gorgeous and novel, but.... Why no portrait support? The principal design constraint offered by apple has been the damned that apps be orientation agnostic if at all possible. I can see how you mightn't want to do that on the menu screen, but the individual element screens seem like great opportunities. Also, please consider dropping the 3d business or letting me click a box indicating that I don't plan to throw my money down that hole. I don't want to double tap a picture and be ushered into a gift shop style preview of what life might be like if only I had some cool shades. Lastly, and this is minor because I suspect that it will be fixed shortly--the app crashes (I am using the revision w/ the new 117 info) when I attempt to swap landscape orientations. I am fine with fast updating effectively beta software, but the updates are gargantuan! I don't want to have to pull 3 updates a week for minor bug fixes if each download is 300MB. Just imagine users on 3G.

HELP. I just bought it and I have 2.3 GB and it still won't let me download it can I have a refund

Worth It!. This app is DEFINITELY worth paying for. I would happily spend $40 on it. Great job!

Beautiful. An amazing and informative app - the imagery is quite hypnotic

Excellent. This deserves a 5 stars! It's UI is great, it helped me with one of my projects at school and the way you can interact with this is unbelievable. Great app!

Mediocre.. EDIT: Immediately after I complained about the lack of retina support, it was added, so thank you (: Caveat Emptor: A lot of the information here (especially the statistics) is just linked from Wolfram Alpha, and that site is free. The images in the app though are stunning on the new display, and everything is quite marvellous to look at!

Whoa 1.7gig! Hope it's good, taking an age to download!. I'll return with a review in a few weeks when it eventually lands on my iPad Updated review, very nicely done - still can't quite see where the massive size is though, video perhaps?

Best app ever!. By far the most amazing app out there. Informative, educational, the author shares his sense of humor so it isn't dry at all but most importantly spectacularly visual. I can't wait to share this with my chemistry students. Other app developers should take note of this high quality product.

Song Fixed. Update element 113, 115, 117 and 118.. Thank you for fixing the song, finally. Although it looks like you also missed the opportunity to update the application with the new IUPAC names for elements 113, 115, 117 and 118. Please update ASAP.

Makes chemistry entertaining. Having this app in the ‘book’ category kind of does it a disservice. I mean, sure it’s a book, in that you’re fundamentally reading and learning about the elements… but it’s so immersive and interactive that you really don’t feel like you’re reading a book. My kids have been captivated by it too, which is great—I love to see them having fun and doing some serious learning at the same time! It’s a learning app just done really, really well—from the high-quality 3D images, to the well-written and entertaining text, to little unexpected details like being able to click on the stats for each element to see how it compares to others. (e.g. Want to see how rare gold is on Earth compared to other elements? Click on '% in Crust' to see it’s ranking alongside others.) I see some commenters that have knocked the app for file size of all things. Yeah it’s big. I guess that’s the cost of all those stunning 3D images that you can rotate with your finger! Don’t try this on your old 8GB device! I agree, it would be great to see Aluminium spelt correctly! But I’m not going to knock an otherwise brilliant app over that issue.

Brilliant!. Undoubtedly the greatest Periodic Table app of all time. Theodore Gray's productions are the best example of everything good about apps. Highly recommend buying the bundle of the Periodic Table, the relating videos (oxidants symbol) app and the latest Molecules for $24.99. Worth every cent. As a Science/ Chemistry teacher, I 'never leave home without it'.

What the iPad was made for. Simply stunning. Really shows off the capabilities of the iPad like no other app I've seen. Great value when you consider what you're getting for the money.

Best App. Love this app and use it to study all the time. Really expensive but overall it's a fantastic app that I always use!!!! AWESOME.

Good (although, it could be a lot better). Ok, this app is a really beautiful piece of work, but it does need to be heavily polished. For example, a majority of buyers would be enticed to spend $15 for this application because of its beautiful and freely maneuverable pictures of each element. The description says that there are over 500 pictures in total, a large majority of these are poor quality and are blurry and sometimes pixelated, however, the few ones that have a high resolution are undoubtably, immaculate. Secondly, I bought this app not only for the pretty pictures, but the information on each element that makes this app a 'book'. The author has a very nice writing style and a good sense of humor, unfortunately, the information provided is somewhat limited and there is very little that you can harness from it (e.g. for school stuff). The way in which the author writes varies, for example one paragraph he writes might be suitable for the day-to-day person trying to learn something about the building blocks of our world, but on the other hand, some texts he writes are aimed at someone who has spent about 7 years studying chemistry. Thirdly, the the overall design of this app is somewhat rushed and made with little care, this makes the application feel like something worth $4 instead of $15. Let's face it, for a ridiculous $15, this app is really nothing better than a bunch of pretty pictures and non-useful information. Considering that the actual hard copy book contains the same information as this's app (and it is over double the price), it too is not worth purchasing. Keep in mind what I mentioned earlier, a vast majority of the images supplied are not shown at their full resolution, they are blurry and pixelated, which decreases the value of this application significantly.

Mr. Great app. I wish I had had it when I was studying chemistry. I would recommend it to all those interested in science.

The new benchmark for e-books. Best $$$ I ever spent. Thanks

Worth the money.. Anyone looking at this app will be put off by the high price but they should not even consider not downloading it. An amazing app that is fun and intriguing.

Dissapointed. Considering the price, you'd expect the text to be in HD :(

Opinion. The app is absolutely gorgeous to the eyes! Love the quality of the app! Brilliant,

Perfection. One may think that this app is only for people planning on using their iPad for school, but that is a massive misconception. I was amazed to see just how finely detailed everything is! And I just got so excited when I first launched this app and heard what could be my favorite song ever - The Elements song. Anyone and everyone should buy this app right away, I was surprised just how often I was using this whether it was purely out of curiosity or information for a social situation you may my find your self in more often then you think or for a school essay or homework or what ever. However, the app is quite large and takes some time to download, But if that's what it takes to create such a great experience I'm happy to take the time to download it. I recommend downloading this app on your Mac or PC then syncing it to the iPad due to the size as this may increase download speed. MUST BUY ~ C Lewis

Congrats!. Most creative and best app ever! I have the book and I thought it was amazing but this is completely outstanding, love the app. Worth $25:00 easy! Really impressed thank you for this app mr. Gray.I have told all friends about this app and there definently gonna buy it! Thank you again!

A beautiful app. One the most amazing educational apps ever You will not be disappointed :D

Great. This app was great. It was easy to use and easy to understand.

Extremely helpful! But...taken with a grain of salt. This app would be worth 5 stars, if it adopted international terminology for the spelling of the Elements listed. The spelling is very US centric - I.e. Aluminium is the correct, internationally accepted, spelling. Yet "Aluminum" is used instead. The American Chemical Society arbitrarily changed the spelling around 1920. Very frustrating at times.

Great - could be better. This app is amazing however the controls don't feel like ipad controls. I would much prefer a swipe to go to next page rather than a button in the bottom right. Excellent app, well worth the price but with improved ipad controls could be Brilliant.

Peter. I think this is a wonderful resource. However, after downloading the app to my phone, I have noticed that a number of element descriptions have been cut short and some actually finish mid sentence. I really hope that this can be fixed.

Not worth $16. This is a good app, helps me a lot with my chemistry at school, but I wouldn't say that it is worth $16

Awe-inspiring. I use this app in my lessons frequently to show students what metalloids look like (among other things). Essential for anyone who is into chemistry.

The best app by far. This is the best app by far, get it, worth the money. The best educational app. And will definitely will come in handy when your doing a project for school or just curious!!!!!

The Elements. Danger Will Robinson danger 1.7gig install it took 3hours, is it worth the $16 price tag ? Yes but only just, it has a nice look and feel but even a person who finds the periodic table fascinating as I do will get tired of this app after about a week and then it will be an expensive novelty

Love it but.... It turns off my music when I open it. This deters me from opening the app sometimes. It is an awesome thing though. Thanks Theodore and team!

Attention!. Awesome app as others have said but be aware, there is a version with proper english spelling/names. This version is the American one with Aluminum and color etc. Note to developers - It's not just England and Ireland that use non-American english. Wish I had know this when i purchased, not going to spend another $17 for correct spellings. Given the app is 1.71 gig surely it wouldn't be much of a stretch to include text in all languages with an option to change between them?

Totally not worth it. Was expecting something with a lot more information but I found it underwhelming and very difficult to actually find the element I wanted. It's not even Retina...

Please update!. Need to be updated for retina on new iPad! Great app just a shame with blurry images

awesome app. This is by far one of the most awesome apps out there, iv had it since it came out and it is worth every cent of money. I highly recommend to buying this app.

Fantastic but.... ...it takes up way too much space. 1.9 GB on a 16 GB iPad is a lot for one app. Please compress the file size (such as by getting rid of the Japanese version of the song, and having the 3D versions of interactives available as separate downloads for people who choose to buy the 3D glasses)!

Amazing needs HD. This is such an amazing app probably by far one of my favourites and worth every cent. I would love to see this upgraded to HD for the new iPad resolution ! Besides that it is wonderful

Stunning!. Stunning is the best word to describe this app. In fact, app isn't even the right word. This is essentially a lightweight textbook. In school, i loved chemistry because of the periodic table, and all the weird and wonderful things that the elements do, so this reference is excellent. It's a great vision of what the iPad (and other tablets) will be capable of in the education setting. My only gripes are that I am going to run out of space on my 16Gb iPad quickly, and that the current version crashes VERY frequently. I will excuse this due to the media heavy nature of the software, and that this is the initial release, however I hope to see an update shortly to address the issue.

Omg! Just what I was looking for!!!!. My daughter is in year 9 and has to learn the table of elements. Being a visual learner this is just awesome! The elements song shows the elements as they are mentioned and the info pages are brilliant! Please make a iPod version for 3rd gen (I think there is a 4th gen version only). Worth ever cent! Only gripe I have is I will have to pay separately for iPod download :(

You Will Not Be Dissapointed.. This is without doubt my favorite application on my iPad and it never fails to impress my friends when i feel like showing off a little. The intuitive interface, gorgeous graphics, and presentation of information makes, a potentially bland and uninspired application, in actuality a pleasure to work with. If you're wondering whether or not to shell out you're hard-earned, wonder no more. This is a fantastic application and you will not be disappointed. As a side note, to the creators of The Elements, for your next project please consider a gemstones and minerals application.

Great. Great app highly recommend it

Good, but 1 issue.... Why can't I play the song anymore? Please fix this and I'll rate 5/5. Otherwise, though, a GREAT app!! Worth the $$$$

Excellent. Wonderful app. I would like to see the spectrum of the elements as well.

Cantenna. Wow! Looks great on iPad 3. Please update other apps for retina too. Thanks!

Quite elemental my dear....... This is the app to really show off your iPad! It's interactive and a fun way to learn science. I just wish this kind of stuff was available when I was in school. Pros: - Spinning objects - Great photography with high resolution - Interesting and humorous write-ups on each element - No problems with stability on my iPad - Cost, worth it in my opinion - Ability to see objects in 3D with special glasses Cons: - Down loading. Had to down load to my computer first - Size (but I knew about that) - It would be nice to pinch items larger (especially the home screen). - A little more data about about typical uses and where mined would be useful.

Great app. Thank you for making such a wonderful application that I use every day, but if you could add the metallic stare case, and also add a colour coating for the different types of elements. Thanks.

Looks great and promising but. It won't load properly and keeps exiting the program. I have rebooted according to app support but did not work. Hopefully this can be resolved soon since I had to pay for this just to see how beautiful the promo said it would be.

The good, bad, suggestions, and verdict.. The good: content is fantastic, solid info, great visuals. Useful Wolfram Alpha integration for element specifics. Nice search function, beautiful rotating pictures of elements and items containing them. Nice intro song. The info, I find, is not only i interesting and useful, but also as relevant to our daily lives as possible. Under Bismuth, for example, there is a rotatable bottle of Pepto-Bismol, containing Bismuth Subsalicytate - the active ingredient that is part of the product's name. The bad: steep price, large file. Interface is merely satisfactory, and although there was clearly a lot of work put into this app, there remains much to be desired. Although the rotating pictures are beautiful, they are mostly superfluous, an in my mind contribute little towards what should be the purpose of the app - teaching people about the elements. The writing is solid, but I feel there's some left to be desired, as some of the writing seems to be filler. Suggestions: what about some options? For example, to label the periods/groups? What about zoom capabilities, because the interface is rather static? Other diaplay options would be nice. Also, and this is rather important - you should be able to listen to music while in the app. It is rather frustrating; I would use the app far more often if I could have some music in the background. I doubt I'm alone in this view. Verdict: do I regret paying the $13.99? Of course not. I would buy it again. There are many apps I have bought that I wish I hadn't - this is definitely not one of them. Yet, there are definitely some improvements that I would like to see. Despite the problems I pointed out, I still think it's a great app, and fills an important niche in the app store. I wouldn't heaitate to buy it if you have any interest in the elements or to learn about the building blocks of our universe.

Great information hard to find. A 1.7G educational application is definitely rich on content, but UI and interaction are too complicate to new users like me.

Application. J’adore les présentations. Les textes et explications sont claires et la qualité des vulgarisations sont excellente. Je recommande cette application à ceux et celles qui veulent débuter des études en chimie. Vous ne le regretterez pas.

Beautiful. I love this app, I couldn't find so much information on the elements in one place before.

Beautiful program...but it crashes. An excellent and fun approach to elements, with cheeky writing and beautiful graphics. But the program crashes when the animated tabs are selected. Frustrating.

Retina Display. Please add Retina capabilities it would make reading a lot easier on the new Ipad

Very good. Very good

Hate the forced animation!. OVERVIEW: On the main Home page, and on the "home" page of each element, there is a lot of animation, which as far as I can tell, cannot be disabled. I find this extremely distracting and irritating. Caveat: I have not read this complaint in any other review, so it makes me wonder if it is just me - perhaps my age (I'm in my 50s)? If my suggested enhancement (below) is implemented, I will improve my rating. ENHANCEMENT REQUEST: Nevertheless, I beg the author to do something about this issue. As a first pass, you could provide a switch (a setting option) which allows the user to disable all auto-animation. This would make the main Home page, and each element's home page, completely static (as well as any auto-animation that may occur in other contexts). A second pass would allow the user to disable all auto-animation, but then selectively re-enable it (such as being able to turn, spin, or immobilize an element's home page image). DETAILS: Home page (forced animation - bad): The Home page for this app is the periodic table. For each element, there is an image which either continuously rotates, or continuously scales up and down (zooms in and out). There is little benefit to this presentation, other than a gimmick factor. On the downside, however: 1) it is irritating and distracting. I have trouble focusing on one element, with all the other ones being in continuous motion. 2) the element symbols (H, He, Li, etc) aren't even nicely presented - they are in a dull grey fuzzy font which does not stand out. Of course I want to see beautiful images, animation, 3D, etc, in other parts of this app, but for the Home page, I would take almost any periodic table from a google image search over this one. Element home pages (forced animation - bad): On the homepage of each element, the left two thirds of the screen is taken up by an image, which is continuously animated. The right third (or less) of the screen contains information about the element. I have a lot of trouble reading the element info when most of the screen is taken up by a giant rotating gold nugget, or even worse, a big photo of Albert Einstein that continuously grows and shrinks and moves around. And even in the info portion of the screen, there are a number of smaller, yet still distracting, continous animations (such as crystal structure), together with the static info that I am trying to focus on. Element second pages (optional animation - good): From an element's home page, you can go to a second page for the element. The second page contains a (text) article about the element, and a number of images (mostly photographs). By default, everything is static. However, each image can be rotated, spun, or immobilized by the user. Double-clicking on an image brings up a 3D version of it (a double image which can be merged using 3D glasses or perhaps by crossing your eyes). This *optional* animation is great - if only the whole app were like this.

Great. This app is very useful and provides multiple pictures and explanations about where and how the elements are either farmed or created. It also provides info about the elements at molecular level, which is useful as well

Awesome!. I could barely put it down until I read them all, which took almost 2 days! Great graphics, great write ups, great 3D rotating objects. And for those that want them to 'fix' the fact that it is 1.7GB, (118 elements) x (~6 rotatable objects) x (~20 frames of rotation) x (~100kB per frame)=??? Do the math. This app has so much packed in there that it has to be big.

Amazing. This app is amazing. I don't care how much it costs and how much memory it takes up. I love it. But I like updates and that doesn't happen too often.

Good.... A pretty good app, great images, lots of info, fast, interactive, but like all apps, has it's a few problems. Such as, crashing a few times, no zooming in on pictures, and mass download. But an update could fix some of those problems. It's a good app if you need the knowledge, but it's just for viewing purposes, I wouldn't get it at the current price.

Nearly perfect. Great writing and unique, engaging presentation ideal for the subject matter... and that's what matters. Not quite perfect: the multimedia presentation is a bit gimmicky and limited, and 90% of the pictures I don't need to spin, let alone see in 3D. And the Wolfram Alpha data on each element is a bit of a shrug to me. But the writing is solid, and many of the pictures are beautiful and beautifully presented. If the author and publisher had invested more in the content -- i.e. longer captions for the pictures, introductions to groups of elements -- I would have given it five stars. Still, look at the non-existent competition. The Elements stands alone in the app store! I would buy something similar in a heartbeat ... but there is nothing else like it to buy. Quite a coup. I will always remember it as my first really satisfying ebook. Sooooooo many metals ... :)

Good, but.... It's a well made app, albeit on the huge side in terms of size, and it's served me well during the academic year. It gives useful data about all the elements, as well as an anecdote or two, which far deepened my interest in chemistry. Here's the problem: it was all good until iOS 4.2 came out, but Touch Press or Theo Gray didn't release a compatibility upgrade. Now, the app is the same size, with an unconventional button-based UI, munches memory thanks to multitasking but isn't multitask-compatible itself. Another problem, which has appeared on my friends' iPads is in iOS 4.3, especially with multitasking gestures enabled. Switching from another app to The Elements will make almost the entire, or sometimes the whole black background transparent, with an animated periodic table hovering over your home screen (or whichever switchboard you might've been on before you started the app). When I bought it, in September, it was entirely worth the 14$. Now, unless an update comes out, I'm leaving it at 3 stars and the following comment: unless you're truly desperate (or running iOS 3.2), don't waste your money.

Pretty but get it at 50% off sale. It's cute, but after a few looks you'll never use this app again so I'm glad I didn't pay full price or I'd feel scammed.

Singularly unimpressed. Singularly unimpressed Staggeringly large at 1.7 GB. Seems unnecessary even for fairly nice 3-D pics. The navigation is awkward. There is no ability to swipe to move between elements. You have to press a small arrow at the bottom. The home button is way too small on every page. While the home page looks nice it's tough to read the names and numbers of the elements. Drop the price by 75%, drop the spinning photographs, drop the size by 80%, and then it's worth four stars, maybe five. But only then. Nice integration with WolframAlpha, but this only means that you have to be connected on WiFi or 3G to get that information. Ironic, given the size of this application. All of the information is crammed on to less than one third of the screen so that there can be a spinning model of the element. Granted, the spinning models look nice, but that loses its shine when you struggle to get the more detailed information. Hugely disappointed. This was one of the first apps I wanted to get for the iPad. If I could, I would return this app and then repurchase it when it improves, which I suspect it will.

can not sync. I have purchased and downloaded this item recently, but could not open it

I use the pirate app when I was in China. Time to say sorry. Time to pay.. Extremely Helpful For The People Who Love Chemistry.

Improved 3D options makes it even better. My complaint about the lack of cross-eye viewing has been fixed so this app is even better (though I gave it 5 stars before) One other feature request is that it would be nice if you could pinch to zoom in some more when you are on the page with the enlarged view. Some of the object have fine detail that would be nice to inspect closer. For space reasons you might have to disable the rotation and only have zoom in on the "front" side. Well worth the money. (The large size is a necessity for all the photos included. But I made the mistake of clicking update on my iPad (thinking it would be a small patch not the whole multi-GB app). Luckily pausing the app download and syncing it from iTunes worked.)

Exceptional. Creative and classy - whether you are in school learning the periodic tables or are curious about the elements, this is the app for you! Hi res photos and even some 3D images that revolve, informative and entertaining, lists items that the element is used for ... facts abound. This is one of the apps I most often show people when they want to see what an iPad is.

Have an iPhone 6 Plus?. Can't see half the elements. This App is broken. If there was a way to reasonably request a refund or publicly smear this company I'd do it in a heartbeat.

updates. I love this program, but the updates are to big and take forever to download. 1.71 G update takes forever, please fix this.

The Elements. This app works beautifully on the iPhone with iOS version 10 or 11. It’s strange to see most of the elements in picture form versus their chemical symbol, especially on a small screen such as the iPhone 5 series. I would suggest both screens: pictures and chemical symbols, that the user could choose from. Otherwise, great job with much information on some practical applications of each element. Benoit Doiron, P. Chem. Member Order of Chemists, Québec

Inaccurate. IRON rusts all other metals corrode.

Beautiful but big have to connect to get info. Pretty much that says it all... One short intro on each element (which is great) but then for everything else you have to connect to the internet.... Add all the extra info and I'll give it five stars easy.

Amazing application !!!. This application is great ! It opens up a whole new world, the book is awesome, the application is even better than the book, I bought both the book and application.

3d glasses a rip off.. An interesting survey of the elements. However, the " reasonable but high quality" 3d glasses are a small cardboard box with two pieces of prismatic film covering holes punched in the side. It does have 2 quality elastic bands for your ears! Cost me $10 in Canada, worth maybe 50 cents.

Cut-off text. Some text in the end of each element description seems to be cut off. Will it be fixed in a future update?

LOVE IT!!!. If this app (and iAnything) existed when I was a high-school student, I might have actually appreciated chemistry. Brilliant design and great information delivered with delightful humour. Who knew chemistry could be so entertaining!?

Not that great. It looks really beautiful and it's a nice way to show off an iPad, but it's actually a fairly static interface. I expected more interactivity for the price. (Not that I know how to write an app!) And, as mentioned, it's fiendishly large and takes forever to download/update.

Florin. an smart app but beware you can purchase for the price of Two Apps the Third in a Bundle. The catch 22 is the bundle is not downloading. I left the message here because in the bundle I can not as It wont download.

Only supports landscape orientation. Stunningly beautiful eBook. Warning: This app only supports landscape orientation on one side, which means it's on the wrong side when you're using the iPad case in "bezel" mode. UPDATED REVIEW for v1.0.1.3. The orientation problem is fixed. Now works in both landscape orientations.

Pretty, but useless. A gorgeous demonstration of the iPad's capabilities, very nice for commercials, but expensive, and remarkably devoid of any useful information. Each element gets one page, containing about three paragraphs of text, mostly trivia and things you knew when you we were ten. The pictures are pretty, some more relevant than others, but scarce. I bought this app primarily for it's aesthetic, in the hopes that it would delve a bit deeper into the lore of the elements, regaling the reader with interesting and alluring, if not necessarily useful, information. Perhaps like a pretty, digital version of Oliver Sacks' Uncle Tungsten, its shimmering visual appeal combined with an engaging narrative. I'm all in favor of picture books, but I was hoping this one would go a bit deeper. I guess I was hoping for a bit more. Also, 1.7 GB!? How in the heck can so little information take up so much space?

Good pictures but descriptions written by an activist. The app has great pictures, good descriptions, but it's a bit annoying when the opinions make their way into what would be nice if it were purely scientific factual information. For example, in the description for Carbon the author makes sure to mention that diamonds aren't really beautiful but we have been tricked by DeBeers. Or for the description of tungsten he tells us it's an abomination to use tungsten filament incandescent light bulbs. Since I prefer to form my own opinions based on facts that I research, I would prefer an app that just gives me information on the elements and not political conclusions about their usage.

Absolutely Stunning - A Must Have. A friend suggested I get this app for my iPad. I am so happy I did. This app is spectacular. Not only is it super glossy iCandy for your iPad - it is a wonderful educational tool as well. The descriptions of the elements are very well written and filled with humor throughout. The 360-degree photos are outstanding, and the interface is a pleasure to use. Even though I'm a scientist, and for the most part I would have thought there were few surprised I would learn from this app - I was delighted to see that just about every element has some bit of information that I was not aware of. Simply put - I'm having as much fun using this app as I am having showing it off to other people. Very very well done. The perfect "coffee-table-book" for your iPad.

Too big and too costly. I bought this app based upon the numerous rave reviews posted here. It's not a bad application exactly; it has cool graphics and provides some useful information, but it is frankly too expensive for what it is and way too large. It required several hours for the initial download over a fast broadband connection, and now I'm downloading the update and again it's taking hours. I have a 16 GB Ipad so this one application alone takes up almost 8% of the total space. For someone with a 64 or even a 32 gb Ipad size may not be such an issue, but had I known how large it was I would not have purchased it.

Amazing. There is no way you could lose in purchasing this. If you thought chemistry or biology was boring this is a must for you. It sparks your interest I'm finding it hard to put down. And once your interested your ready to learn! I haven't had a single problem with this application! Breath taking....it will blow you away! I cannot wait to load this on my teenagers iPad!

My 6th grader stole my iPad!. I showed my son The Elements this evening. We played around with it for a few minutes, ooo-ing and ahh-ing at the different features and information. Then, all of a sudden, he walked away with the iPad. He ended up going through the entire book and finally brought back the iPad when he was finished. No crashes or problems of any kind for us. This is the way books should be. I can't wait to see additional titles like this added to the app store.

Future of textbooks?. Well, its the future of something. Yes, I understand projects like this reek of the old CD-ROM "Multimedia" craze of the 90's. But you know what? You couldn't touch those and interact with them with your fingers, and take them with you in a 1.5 lb tablet. This is amazingly well done. I wouldn't buy it though unless you are really into the elements or to share with your kids. For that it's worth it though.

Best app I've seen. Let me just say that this app is amazing! Fantastic pictures, great info, and one of my favorite songs! Sure it comes at a high price point however it is worth every penny (even more) this is how future books should be, it really shows what the iPad is capable of! Really hope well se more like this! 6 out of 5 stars!

Should be called the Element Crashium. Fantastic potential when it works. When I first go it, it worked fine, but for some reason, now it crashes constantly. I have re-installed, rebooted the iPad and tried navigating through the menus differently to no avail, it just crashes when you click on an element or go to the main table. NO app should be allowed to be submitted or stay in the App store if it crashes as badly as this thing does. For the money, I really expected a lot more in the way of stability. Look at the Phaedon Design App - similar in complexity, but it never crashes...

A Treasure!. This app is chock full of fascinating information. The lighthearted writing style and sumptuous visuals make learning a pleasure. I just hope they upgrade it to take advantage of the retina display on the new iPad. The text and pictures would be dazzlingly crisp in the higher resolution. I know it would take longer to download, but it would be time well spent. I've had no problems with crashing.

Absolutely Amazing. This app is insanely great the only down side is with all the included fantastic images it takes up 1.7 giga bytes of space but that is understandable and the images I wouldn't want to do without. If the app crashes RESTART your iPad mine never crashed again after that. Great app worth every penny and it's a whole new way to explore the periodic table.

Does not work as advertised, fix this Apple or remove it from the App store!. It does not crash on me like most others, however the images do not stay loaded in the periodic table and then when I click into an "element" or missing element as my case is, the second larger image of that element does not load at all. However, I can go to a 3rd page where some smaller images load and rotate.. other than that though I feel extremely ripped off as I wanted to use this app as a demonstration of how powerful this device can be.. guess it just shows how buggy it can be instead. Thanks Apple for your wonderful closed garden, no refunds experience! You are doing an excellent job, Apple. /s

Does not work!. After the latest update, I cannot install this app at all! iTunes displays an error that says: "the resources have changed." I have done several troubleshoots such as: deauthorize and reauthorize my computer, check for updates, Reinstall the application, and finally, reporting an issue. Once this is fixed, I will give it five stars.

Gorgeous app, but update is less stable than original!. Like the book, the app is gorgeous. It shows off the best of the iPad graphics. But, as other reviews have noted, it is absolutely enormous. I had no problems with the original version, but have stability issues with the update. When I go to the description page (with the movable items), the app shuts down periodically (accidental pun!)

A true work of art!. This app is truly a work of art. One thing I would like to see added is a little more functionality to the main view of the table, for example, adding the group numbers of each column of the table. Just a suggestion to make a fantastic app that much better.

Excellent Work!. 1) Downloaded overnight. 2) Rebooted Ipad before starting this app. -Haven't had a single problem. I've been playing with it, enjoying it, and learning with it steadily for three straight hours without a single glitch or hiccup. Even the "Thank You" section is fun reading! Top of the line IPad app: 10 Stars! -Don't complain about it's "size" if you're incapable of reading the "size" information included for every app directly below it's page icon. -Get in the habit of 'rebooting' your IPad, IPhone, IPod et al ESPECIALLY after installing large apps and/or noticing glitches. I reboot once a week, it seriously doesn't take that much time, under a minute, and is 'healthy' for the machine, memory, processor etc.

Fabulous design. I'm no chemist, but I almost want to be after diving into this app! Interactive and beautiful graphics supplement informative text and live-updates from Wolfram/Alpha's curated data to offer a great educational experience. (For those who are experiencing crashes, have you restarted the iPad after updating? That usually fixes new app issues. My app crashed once immediately upon first loading, and then has been rock solid ever since.)

Sweet book but don't buy for school work. When I first got my iPad I went through the top rated apps for school and this was one of them. I think it's cool as a book but trying to use this thing is class is more of a struggle then it's worth. I bought a simple periodic table that gave me what I needed for my chem classes. Again great book I just thought this would be good for school but it's not.

Great app - but why do I have to pay again for iPhone version?. If I buy an book for iBooks on the iPad, I don't have to pay again to read it on my iPhone. If I buy music on my iPhone, I don't have to pay again to listen to it on my iPad. Since I've already bought this for my iPad, why am I expected to spend another $9.99 to buy this again, to see on my iPhone? Why isn't this a universal app that I only have to buy once? I've liked this on the iPad very much, and I would boost my star rating considerably, if I didn't feel like the value was lacking since I have to pay twice to put this app on the iPad and the iPhone.

Memory well filled. This app might be 1.74GB, but is a must for all chemistry students, or any student in need of remembering the table of elements, hands down. If you're in a chemistry class, just download this app right now. Also, if you are having problems with the application crashing, just uninstall it, reinstall it, then immediately restart your device once it had downloaded fully. You shouldn't have any further problems.

Amazing tho buggy.. It is incredibly addictive. I just spent over an hour reading about different elements and looking at the pictures (tho buggy....see below for workaround). Despite the high price, it is worth it. The only downside is that it crashes a lot. According to the support site this is due to lack of memory and the only solution is to "reboot" you iPad. Press and hold the power button on top and slide the shutdown slider. Wait till it is completely off and restart it.

Just expensive, compressed looking animations. I wouldn't go touting this as an example of iPad software for learning. Except for the obnoxiously written, frequently off-subject and occasionally inappropriate, 1-page text for each element, all of the information in the app comes from wolfram alpha (and they don't let you forget.) So, it's basically about pretty images. But it fails here too. The images are almost always a low native resolution so the full screen feature generally looks terrible. The best part about the app (the 3D feature, which is cool if you're able to do it without glasses) unfortunately only works for these low quality, small images and not for the much nicer, higher resolution image on the main screen of each element. Either way, as I suspected before I bought this, it isn't worth the outrageous asking price.

Don't buy - Application still crashing as of May 23, 2010. I just bought this application. I haven't been able to enjoy it more than 30 seconds without this application from crashing. How this could be so poorly tested is beyond me. I simply select an element such as Molybdenum. Then two buttons show the elements prior and next at the bottom of the screen. Any time you click these buttons, you are thrown out of the application. I've tried multiple elements and I get the same result. Another surprise is that this 2Gigabyte application requires the internet to function. This I was not expecting. Save your money and simply look up elements on Wikipedia.

Great app. This app is perfect for a new chemistry student or a refreshing change of pace to the seasoned chemist who is now able to casually view properties of elements on this sweet new device. I give it two thumbs up. Its a lot of memory yes, but stop whining and shell out the extra hundred bucks for an ipad with more gigs. Anyway the app is truly fantastic, offers a new, intuitive and exciting way to learn about our world and what its made up of. Truly should be experienced by everyone...

Amazing amount of thought and creativity put into this app. Stunning presentation and useful, pithy information about each element. This is exactly what I was looking for: a sort of field guide to the elements whereby I could gain an intimate, working familiarity with each one instead of studying dry facts on a table. The author's passion for the elements really shines through, and relevant anecdotes help bring each element alive. The app was a bit crashy at first but a quick power cycle of the iPad fixed that.

Pretty good but.... I bought this app so I would have something good to show off what the iPad is all about. It doesn't fail to disappoint. However, since I'm usually using it to show off the iPad, the fact that it crashes pretty constantly is a big negative. Besides that, the price is too much. I could see paying 14 bucks for a nice high quality full color book about the elements, but for this app it seems like too much. 6 or 8 bucks would be better and 5 bucks would be great. Also, it needs a better icon. Maybe nitrogen instead of helium.

One of the Very Best. This may be one of the best, funnest, most educational, and visually pleasing apps I have ever experienced. It is well worth the price (which is relatively high as apps go). I love to check it out every day and read about two or three elements just for the pure pleasure it offers. Visually, it is beautiful. Yes, it does have crashing problems that I would love to see fixed, but it reboots quickly and is so satisfying it is worth the trouble.

Great app for stimulating interest in science. I wanted to download this app since I got my iPad but hesitated due to the comments about crashing. I have used the app many times since I finally did download it with absolutely no problem. I purchased the 60Gb model so the 1.7 Gb size doesn't bother me - it is well worth it. I taught AP chemistry for many years and wish that I would have had this app available every day when I was teaching. The Elements is visually stunning and packed with very interesting information.

Stunning - If I was still teaching physics I'd use this book as a resource. I used to teach physical science at the university level. If I were still teaching I'd recommend this app as a resource. It is visually compelling and the write-ups are engaging. The links into Wolfram Alpha are useful. (I also recommend the Wolfram Alpha app for the iPad.) I've read the physical book - the iPad version is even better.

IPAD CASE vs App. This was the first app I bought after getting my IPAD as its soo.. cool, I found an issue though that I was hoping that the dev team could fix. When using the Apple case for the IPAD and running the App it does not rotate so in-turn if you setup the case on a angle the app is up-side down. I really like this app and I hope the dev will fix this one glitch.. Since the app is so cool I still give it five stars but please dev please fix the rotational issue.. thanks

Awesome app, 3D???. This app is great. Great interface. Awesome way to learn about the elements this universe consists of. Just a tad expensive tho in my opinion. Only problem I have is with the 3D being a gimmick and not working right. I can free view many stereo images but these are too far apart to make any convergence happen. Needs a scale option to adjust the spacing between image to account for different distances between individual's eyes.

Retina Display?. I've been waiting for this update forever, and now that I released it I see that the pictures are of a higher quality...only I expected it to be an even higher quality. When they said the pictures would look HD even on the iPad 3 I was happy, but looking at it now, it's really disappointing. Everything on the new iPad either looks really crisp or really pixelated, and I think the pictures look pixelated. It's a great app, I just would have liked to see more quality in the pictures is all.

Never crashes. After I downloaded this app I immediately restarted my iPad, because that's what your suppose to do and I have had zero problems with this app, it's definitely worth the price. The images look flat out amazing, however mercury and a select few other could look better.

Near perfect. This is the most visually appealing chemistry app available with a decent deal of information....near perfect. Only thing that would make it a little better and which would not require much extra work of the developer, would be if the oxidation numbers/states where added somewhere in the information field or the table itself. This would add greater functionality to the app in the classroom environment, as it would make it more robust for use in determining the bonding, structure of compounds, stoichiometry, and other calculations.

Fantastic. This is one of the main apps I use to show off the iPad. Aside from the funny, layman's text accompanying each element's scientific information, the photographs are brilliantly shot against a black background so that the elements really "pop". Although I haven't yet purchased the stereoscopic glasses, this 3D option is very clever as well. Whenever I am using "The Elements", people invariably come up to me to ask about the iPad and what I'm doing on it. Highly recommended and worth the price.

Fantastic!. If you like chemistry, or know nothing about chemistry, this is for you. This app is like a book, with descriptions, applications, and richly detailed photographs of every element. This app contains marvelous data, but the written portion is not technical, and an introduction is also found in the book. It is essential to learn about the universe around you. And this is the app for that. I recommend this on an iPad.

Absorbing and beautiful. This is how books should be made - interesting, witty and beautiful. It works fine in it latest version and even has the latest element (117) discovered earlier this month! Talk about up to date. Its worth getting the 3D specs from the authors website that add an additional level of interest for my kids.

Great App, But One Problem. This app is just perfect. It has never crashed on me and it works great. There is just one little thing that needs to be fixed. When watching the elements song, you are still able to select an element as if there was an invisible periodic table on top of the song. For example, when watching the song, I tapped the top left corner of the screen and the page for hydrogen came up. But other than that, the app is perfect.

Amazing. I don't usually write reviews, but this app is amazing, and you can tell a lot of time went into the creation of it. The 3d items you can spin around are great to look at, especially because you can manipulate them and turn them. the descriptions and stories about the elements are interesting to read. Definitely would recommend getting this app if you like chemistry.

Nice app!. Ok I hesitated for a while but decided to go ahead and purchase. I started the download on iPad and it appeared to take a while to load, maybe 1/4 of download it stopped. I turned iPad off then on and app finished downloading and works flawlessly! Beautiful app, am glad I bought it! Make sure you hit power and home key to power down iPad after download!

Finally!!. This was one of the 1st apps I bought when the iPad came out, and I have always liked using it, but it seemed to have been forgotten as when the new retina displays came out the icon and the app itself looked dated. Well they finally updated the app for retina support after all this time. Now it looks glorious again. If you don't have it buy it, and if you have it update it.

I've been wanting this for a long time.... It's beautiful, but it's lacking a little mostly in that the graphics and look a bit over compressed, but the program is HUGE so they have no choice but to compress it. Everything is spinable or has video. It's pretty neat. I wish I had this for science class. I'm a science geek, but I really thought I'd play with it for HOURS. Not the case, so that's a little disappointing considering the cost. They've definitely made some improvements. The text is better (I think it was graphics before) and it's very easy to enlarge/shrink. All the element data (from Wolfram) appears to be in the program (before it seemed like it was downloading it every time). I think this could easily be a 5 star app. And for the price it should be...

Amazing. Works perfect on iPad 2. Incredible app. Bought it on a whim, now everyone in my house is fighting for it. First app I have ever reviewed, but I had to cuz I was so impressed. Almost makes me want to have kids so I can teach them with it. On iPad 2, it has never crashed and works perfectly all the time. The navigation does take a little getting used to but it is well worth the effort.

Absolutely amazing app!. As someone who has always disliked chemistry a lot, this app fascinated me and had me entertained for days! No longer is the periodic table a bunch of letters with no meaning but now has meaning to what each does. Using high quality displays of each element, and MOST of all their real-world applications has gotten me excited to take chemistry this semester in college. At this price it's a steal and honestly can say it was the best money I've ever spent. Why? Because any app that changes my attitude of years of boredom towards a subject to intense interest is priceless.

Finally all languages in one!. I'm currently learning Japanese and was disappointed when I saw that there were different versions of this app for different languages, but the last update compiled them into one app! Thanks guys! And furthermore for actually adding an easily accessible language setting that more people really need in all their apps instead of "automatic based on system setting" being hard coded into their apps.

Wewt Wewt!!!. What an amazing app, nothing I can say that hasn't been said already (positive comments only)...it is truly unfortunate that some peeps are experiencing difficulties, but that doesn't really call for labeling an app "crash ware" or "do not buy" (my personnel favorite among the negative comment junkies, like that even works, "oh...ok, I'm not gonna' purchase this app b/c this poor schlepp is having problems w/it")...this app work flawlessly for me... ...News Flash...if it works for 90% of the users, It's Not Crash Ware!!!... You can tell by the size of this puppy that a lot of work went into it, it shows on every page... Prices are prices, that's why they're up there, if you don't wanna' fork over the $, don't push the button :)

Great, beautiful app. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I haven't had a single issue with this app's stability. It's beautiful and fun to look at and you'll learn something too. And of course it takes up a lot of space. It's full of super high res (and gorgeous) video. What did you expect? I would like to see more about the science behind the elements. There are many stats listed next to each element but nothing explaining what they mean or how scientists discovered these properties. Maybe in a future update?

The Elements. This is a beautiful visual application but it misses a major educational opportunity. What the application does is to show the student images of the element (3D) then it offers a didactic explanation about the properties of the elements and how they're used. All of this is available online for free (less the pretty 3D effects). The beauty of the periodic chart is that it showed how the properties of the elements are related to the electrons positions in the atomic orbitals. By understanding how the electrons fill in a student should be able to predict the properties of an element and gain an understanding of how the elements are related to each other. This visually stunning application completely misses an opportunity to educate as it only superficially describes whats going on inside the atom, and its shells, and why things are what they are. A+ for pretty images but D for explaining anything about why the chart is what it is. Application will crash from time to time. File is extremely large. M. Gilbreath

Very Nice. This definitely shows just what the iPad is capable of. However, I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could only because it has some crashing issues; it worked fine after a full reboot of my iPad which leads me to believe it's a memory issue due simply to the huge amount of data contained in the app. For those experiencing constant crashing, I'd recommend a reboot as a temporary solution. Great job overall!

iPad Critic Tyler. I have had a truly amazing experience with this app. It delivers the fun of a game and the knowledge of a real chemist. I was astonished with the facts, the images, and the app it self. It displays beautiful graphics and amazing information. If only I would have had this around during my high school and college years. I would recommend this more than a text book. Thankyou. iPad Critic Tyler "Most appreciated iPad critic of the year." (New York Times)
