My favorite dictionary. I bought my first copy of the American Heritage Dictionary over 30 years ago, and it has been my favorite dictionary ever since then. And that is just as true on the iPad app as it was of the print copy.

Best Dictionary, Online and Off!. As a writer, I need an authoritative and unquestionable source for definitions, synonyms, spellings, and pronunciations. I rely on The American Heritage Dictionary to set me straight. I have for 40 years. The most popular online dictionaries offer cute and contemporary definitions, which are adequate for beginners. However, if you want to know the real weight of your words, look it up in The American Heritage Dictionary. I cannot go through a day without it.

Classic dictionary. No app can be as good as the original book but it is much easier to carry a phone than a paper dictionary. The paper version of the American Heritage Doctionary is a must-have also.

Wonderful tool. Even though there are 1000 options on the Internet, I love having this app and being able to do what I need without being connected. This dictionary is far better than the ones on the Internet, and I hope they keep it up.

Great. yes, this costs money, but you get what you pay for. This app is well worth it. As a native English speaker, I refer to this multiple times a week. My job is not writing, but I do write for in my work and read a lot. Most of the time, I’m looking up words that I come across as I read. I discover the multiple meanings and nuances to words that I didn’t know. Also, I use this app for finding out if I’m using a word correctly. I find that we Americans can use words incorrectly without knowing it, form bad habits. I understand that this is how a word’s meaning eventually morphs, but not always the case. I highly recommend this dictionary and app!

The most comprehensive dictionary. Been using the AHD for almost 50 years. Hands down superior to all the rest. With entomology, you actually learn more than one word’s definition at the same time.

American Heritage dictionary. I know a lot of people have complained about this app but I have loved it for many many years I have the paper copy of the latest dictionary from American Heritage but I love this app in answers everything it shows everything I have never had a problem with it I’ve always been very happy with this app and I was going to update it I thought there was a newer one and they said I already did have it so that saved me extra money because they were honest they told me I already had it. And could have taken my money I am very happy with this dictionary I highly recommend it if you like a good dictionary that gives all the background and the pronunciations and where the word came from this is the dictionary for you

Better than the rest. Much much better than any other dictionary app I have seen. Not sure why it’s not the most popular (as I write this, at least.) Check it out!

American Heritage Dictionary. Hands down the finest dictionary ever created in North America. The clear and exhaustive definitions, the useful etymologies, and the gold mine of the Indo-European roots, all these make the AHD a peerless tool. My only dislike? The color. The hectic orange sets everything on edge.

American Heritage Dictionary. This is the best dictionary of American English on the market. It provides solid definitions and sound etymologies. However, what clinched the deal is its notes on usage. It is not the American OED, but it is the best that we on this side of the pond have for regular use.

A grand dictionary. Without doubt, AHD is the finest English dictionary. I treasure my unabridged 5th edition and am very grateful for this much more portable version. Having studied both English lit and linguistics I can assure you that this dictionary and various other features is a reliable go-to, whatever your language needs are.

Long time user, not happy. I have purchased this app twice over the last 6 or 7 years. I first bought AHD5 because it was a fantastic dictionary. It was a proper, adult, full featured, but simply designed app. It didn’t try to compete with all of the social centric, sophomoric garbage out there. During the last big update (iOS 14.5) the app stopped working again . I gave it a week or two hopeful that an update would fix it… nada. So I contact the developer (Mobisystems- what happened to Enfour?!) They were of no help… so against my better judgment, I bought it a 3rd time!! To my horror, they redesigned the app. It’s awful- I want my money back!!

it doesn't work more even though I paid for a long time ago. I agree with at least one other reviewer that my experience indicates this app is a scam. I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it to see on iOS 16.1.1 and it doesn't work, either before or after the reinstall -- just a blank white screen with an ad at the bottom. I paid $20 for it a few years ago, and they have been hitting me up for more money all along. And now it doesn't work at all. Save your money. BTW, until it stopped working altogether, the thesaurus only had synonyms, no antonyms, which makes it not a thesaurus. and the dictionary definitions are present-day only; they completely ignore historic definitions, especially of terms that are now in popular use.

Great Content, Dated Interface. The content is not the issue. The interface is extremely dated and could use some great quality of life and optimization improvements.

Decent but slow. They’re so eager for a rating that they started interrupting my word searching to ask how I like the app from before I was even able to form an opinion about it. Frustratingly, it doesn’t announce when the word I want *isn’t* there. It just hangs empty, as if I need to type more letters. Definitions themselves seem fine. I want more in the way of etymology.

So far, so good. I use a dictionary all the time, and have been looking for one that isn’t letting the masses of ignorant people rewrite the entire thing, like “literally” being defined as “figuratively”, its antonym, making the word pretty much useless. This one is excellent so far, and I recommend it.

Best Hard Cover Dictionary. I researched dictionaries before I purchased the hard cover edition. I learned a lot about the differences. The American Heritage was clearly the best choice for me. I’ve only started using the app so can’t express an opinion yet.

American Heritage Dictionary is Outstanding. I used this dictionary for 30+ years on paper. The usage guide is helpful. The definitions tend to follow the helpful genus, differentia format. The phone app is convenient everywhere. Zip quickly to related words, derivations, root words that go back Indo-European and Semitic roots. The AHD is like having a history of ideas at your fingertips going back 3,000 plus years. How cool is that!

Constant companion. Having been an avid reader for all of my life, I’ve made it a habit to look up new words that I come across. Therefore, having this app is absolutely wonderful. I can easily look up a words definition on a device that’s always with me.

Very useful dictionary. This dictionary has more extensive usage notes than other apps, and that is helpful to me.

Useful. I like this dictionary because of ease of use and it pronounces words that are difficult unless you hear them.

Definitely my go-to dictionary. I have a PhD in English and this is my favorite, everyday dictionary. Two features really stand out: the Usage Notes and the etymologies. The Usage Notes give you authoritative advice on difficult points of grammar and usage from a diverse panel of experts. The etymologies are in a class by themselves. They trace words back to their Indo-European and Semitic roots. I have not seen anything like that in another dictionary.

Best Dictionary. I have several dictionaries on my iPhone and iPad; however, American Heritage is my first choice, always. It does a great job of listing the different parts of speech of a word, which is an area some other dictionaries fall short.

Improved but Kill the Splash Screen. The dictionary content is, of course, the best American language dictionary available. The weakness had always been the shoddy app through which it was published. This new app is improved, and worth the shortcomings of the app for anyone who appreciates nuance, depth, and first rate usage notes of the underlying dictionary. Feature request: kill off the splash screen. This is an unnecessary delay to getting to content. An ‘About’ option on the main menu is a more appropriate place for this seldom needed information. A user is opening the dictionary for content, not to see the cover again. I thought Apple’s rules for developers prohibited splash screens anyway.

Daily Words. I love the word for the day. I used a hardback copy of an older published American Heritage Dictionary when I home schooled my children. I liked it so much I wound up taping the binding with duct tape. This is an easy to use electronic version.

Complete and great pronunciation. I’ve long used this app from the early days when it was a huge standalone app with images and pronunciation built in (no need for Internet connectivity). After languishing for years it’s back to its former glory. A must-have app for those who make a living with the written and spoken word.

A Lexiphile’s friend. The American Herritage has always been my first go to dictionary for definitions and etymologies, and the app continues in that great tradition. Particularly noteworthy is the ability to click on any word and the definition and be taken to that entry in the dictionary! The Word of the Day feature is fun, though a little random, and could benefit from a curated choice of words. In the free version, the ads aren’t terribly distracting, but this tool is so useful it is worth paying the price to support it.

Excellent product. The American heritage dictionary is my favorite of all dictionaries. And there have been some rough patches trying to get this app launched in a way that was as complete as it’s in print large dictionary‘ and at a fair price. WellIt seems the free version is almost as good as the $20 one of the exception of ads. This app largely has everything I could want for the most part and it makes for a very very useful tool in my line of work as a teacher. I highly to recommend it. Great definitions, decently design and very dependable.

Suggestions. Two suggestions: First, make the favorite star button on the same page of the definition of the word to easily find it; it will speed up the process of saving words for future reference without making it feels like an extra work. Second, a highlight option in the application to highlight relevant definitions. Sometimes I would like to read the definition that I earlier found relevant to my studies or profession. I also recommend to have the highlight button on the definition page for easy access. I believe that offering the two suggestions in the premium version of the application makes it more appealing to buy the application with these features rather than the advantage of pronunciation and ad removal.

Excellent Reading Resource. While I love my giant hard bound version of the dictionary it’s not always easy to keep it beside me while reading. Using Google to locate a word is okay, but offers scant etymology and inadequate definition. Purchasing this American Heritage app has been really worth it. I keep it on my phone’s home screen and with two clicks and a little typing I’ve got my definition, etymology and all! Very useful and easy app. Highly recommended.

Won’t download on new device. Purchased this dictionary years ago and have used it often. Went to download it on my new iPad Mini 6 from “Purchased” apps in store and all I get is a blank white page with Google ad at bottom. Have tried removing/redownloading/rebooting several times to no avail. Works fine on iPhone. Says it’s compatible with this iPad. Tried reporting problem to Apple - says I can’t report because I don’t own it. Why is it under “Purchased” and on my iPhone? Developer website/link useless and refers me to community answers - generic and unhelpful. No direct developer contact information. Can’t restore premium purchase as directed from a blank white page!

Prof. Edwin. The Dictionary itself is excellent but the software causes huge problems besides I bought it twice but still the software insists on buying it again.

Peer reviewed language. I love knowing the richness of words. This is the App for the best dictionary for us Americans. I bought the downloaded version so even in the middle of nowhere, I will still know how to pronounce transient and what to proto-Indoeiropean root is.

The American Heritage Dictionary, Fifth edition. This dictionary fits in perfectly while reading online, and discovering words spelled oddly, uncommon words that need definition, even slang that is a little older. Well done! Important ideas for consistently expressing myself and understanding the world. The vocabulary evolves along with each generation.

Good content, mediocre interface. This app would be much better with some UI improvements. First of all there is a bug in the favorites list, when I tried selecting a favorite that I saved from the thesaurus, it brought me to a totally different word. Second, the favorites list does not indicate whether the favorite is a dictionary entry or a thesaurus entry. Third, switching from the dictionary entry of a word to the thesaurus entry should not have to be as much of a process as it is (going back to search, changing to thesaurus mode, re-entering the word into the search bar, then selecting it). Might I suggest adding a button on a word that also has a thesaurus entry to switch back and forth between the two? In terms of the quality of definitions, this is currently my favorite dictionary, but it is a bit of a pain to use the app sometimes.

Can’t use on both iPad and iPhone. After buying this dictionary for my iPad I discovered I couldn’t also use it on my iPhone like I can with most all other apps that I’ve purchased. Apparently, I would have to repurchase it for my second device. I contacted customer service and received no reply. The only reason I bought it was because it was such a hassle to load the older version of the same dictionary onto my iPad when I was setting up my new device—that was a multi-email conversation with customer service that involved sending and resending of access codes. I ended up purchasing an Oxford dictionary for my iPhone and won’t do business in the future with the American Heritage dictionary. In addition, their customer service is handled out of Japan, so when they do answer an inquiry, it is delayed.

Great app but now asked to purchase again. This is a great app. As a college English professor, I use it almost daily and strongly recommend it to students. I am not sure as to why I am being asked now to purchase it again. I hope the developer would help in this regard. Thank you!

Good dictionary, slow app. I have the paper copy of the 5th edition and use this app for when I am away from that heavy beast. This app is almost as good as the book, but is slow, too slow to load and too slow to retrieve a word even though I have downloaded the text and need no internet connection. I have great hope this technical problem will be fixed.

Disappointing. How can the language’s most respected and finest dictionary turn out such a humdrum app: the word of the day is often not even a word (TN is today’s) and often a proper noun (like Tennessee). The app is poorly designed and, for me, a mess. What a disappointment! Give me the printed American Heritage Dictionary any time: never a finer one dealing with the American language.

Best dictionary. American Heritage has been my go-to dictionary for decades. So happy to have it at my fingertips now. And, yes, the usage notes continue to be the best feature.

American Heritage Dictionary. Previous version much, much better. Sorry that it was abandoned for new versions of the operating system. Had to buy this version and loss the value and far better and more traditional interface of previous version. Lost all my saved vocabulary words. And have to put up with dumbed-down abridgement of printed version.

App stinks, but dictionary is THE BEST!. Anybody who appreciates the English language knows that AHED is the absolute best available, even compared to Oxford, but especially for American English! Alas, the app doesn’t live up to the same standards. It has always been buggy, incorporating annoying design “features”, and now suggests “words of the day” that don’t even exist in the dictionary. Today’s word is “orc“. I do wonder why orc is not included in the AHED, as we have been using this word regularly since playing Dungeons & Dragons in the 1970s, and/or reading Tolkien in the 1960s or, for those really old farts among us: Beowulf in the middle ages. It would be nice to know where the word actually came from; etymology is typically one of the great features of AHED! Anyway, it’s fantastic that we have a handy, portable, digital reference to the best dictionary ever written. enFour just needs to stop trying to be F***book-fancy, and stick to giving us a solid interface to the most magnificent reference tome on our shelves. Two stars for the app, five stars for the book.

Dictionary wonderful !. Wonderful dictionary I have enjoyed this application from the beginning till now for a total of eighteen years!!

It should be brown. I’m ok with you all erasing all of my favorite words when updating, but could you at least make the color inside the app brown instead of blue? I mean, the physical books are brown and the app icon is brown. You’d think the company that paid you all to make this app for them would care about the color, too. You can change the theme color on the Oxford dictionary. Why can’t I change the theme color on this dictionary? They’re both made by the same outfit, right?

An excellent app that's served me well.. I've used the PC version of this for years and was delighted to find it as an app for the iPhone. It's quick easy to use and has been indispensable when finding the right word(s) when conveying an idea(s)or thought(s) to another people.

I wish it would have some sample sentences.. I purchased the app because I really love the paper dictionary. I have two copies. After I getting this app, l cannot believe this app has the same dictionary name. The audio is even worse. After using it couple of times, I purchased different app which cost much less, has more feature and audio is much better.

App not working. Downloaded American Heritage Dictionary app and later upgraded it to have audio pronunciations for $10. It worked well for a few days but now refuses to load. When opened the screen remains white blank with a google ad at the bottom. Deleted and reinstalled but no use. I feel I lost $10 for nothing.

Same word can not define itself the meaning and use of the word. I expect excellence in a dictionary of this caliber no word can or ever should define itself. Every word does have a specific use and meaning if it lacks these elements but is in use tell us the who, what, where, when, why and how of that usage. Four years since the last update! Language is a live fire breathing Dragon evolving elements omnipresent!

My Favorite Dictionary. The American Heritage Dictionary on my iPhone is a required App. I have used The American Heritage for years and have come to rely and trust this well built reference. This is especially true when reading a book or an article that has a new word. Looking it up is easy, the definitions are clear and this improves my understanding. Thank you!

My go-to dictionary. So far, I have found every word I searched for, including the different meanings and uses in sentences, and I have looked up quite a few archaic or rarely used words.

Great App, paid for it, annoying review prompts. This is an excellent dictionary application with a very good reference material. The interface is quite nice and enjoyable. I actually paid for the full version. Ordinarily I would probably give this app four stars, maybe because it's quite expensive for what it is. I'm only giving it one star because it's very annoying about prompting you to review it over and over. So I'm reviewing it and giving it one star because it annoyed me in an unreasonable away.

Latinist. Includes AH Dictionary of Indo-European word roots! Priceless!

Paid version now has ads. Paid version now has ads

The best English dictionary. I am very happy I bought this dictionary. The first soft version came in a CD format. I own two different versions as they were made available in the market. As soon as they were released on line I did not hesitate to purchase that version and I think at least 2 versions have been produced so far.

Best American English Dictionary. I have used the AHD since the 1970s when I majored in English in college. Its definitions are clear and concise, its usage guidance instructive, and the etymology features excellent. The Indo-European roots included give a depth of information about our language unmatched by any other dictionary. Thanks AHD.

The Writer’s dictionary.. The American Heritage dictionary is excellent. Great to see it in an app.

Audio. For English as a second language speaker, I especially like the audio bit and the off-line availability.

Greeedy. 27.99 just to USE the thesaurus?? That’s some in-app purchases bullsh**.

A Dictionary to be trusted. The American Heritage Dictionary has been my favourite for decades. it protects the Language from the Philistines who would degrade the voice of Milton, Keats and Shakespeare. Long live English!!

Great dictionary but disappointing app. The dictionary is great, but searching for phrases is cumbersome

American Heritage Dictionary. Very good with easy availability

Fun fun fun. Always helpful and great and makes me smarter really good for school

Great app. Easy to use clear information.

Dictionary wonderful !. Wonderful dictionary I have enjoyed this application from the beginning till now for a total of eighteen years!!

AHD Free. Overall very useful as a free product. The data field and addending interface for word lookup is not optimized. Some words and protected from view of nonpaying users, as is the thesaurus. This motivates one to use a competing free resource.

Gratitude!. While searching for a complete perspective on language and it’s many applications, one must have their willfulness and eager attention set on our American Heritage.

American Heritage 5th Ed will not open in IOS 14.6. I have bought this dictionary at least 3 times, and I used it many times every day for work, study, and pleasure. After last night new IOS 14.6 download, the dictionary will not open. I am devastated! What are the developers going to do?

Good. Bad. Really effective dictionary….but they purposely made it a hassle to use on multiple devices. The instruction don’t work…this does not exist with M-W.

Should be able to mark where i left studying. I am studying every word but I am not able to know which one was the last word I read.

Word!. Well organized and easy on the eye. Great complement to word checks while reading on supported electronic devices. Would, and have, recommend it to anyone.

Love it!. I love American Heritage dictionary. It is the absolute best dictionary of the English language. If you prefer facts over feelings in research, this is the dictionary for you. And no, I am not on their payroll.

Excellent. The best dictionary out there. Completely re-written several years ago to include new, modern words, how they’re used in modern culture, there is just one dictionary of American English.

Best Dictionary Ever!. All my life I was taught that the Webster dictionary was best. After using the American Heritage Dictionary it has become my go to. To clarify, it is the best dictionary I have EVER used!

Great app. Great app. It’s set up like the Oxford app, which also means that there’s that stupid pop-up to rate the app almost every time you open it. It’s one thing if it’s free, but I paid $20 for it and $10 for the Oxford app.

Very good app, but!. This dictionary app is very good. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because it charges for having the pronunciation feature. Other dictionaries apps don’t!

horrible color theme. Sound is still bad... and the new color scheme is not pleasant. Please offer a choice of a different (from the previous version) color.

Top notch. Hard to beat this fine Dictionary. The app works very well, too. Highly recommended.

Great dictionary. I bought my first American Heritage dictionary in 1969, and still have it. This one is easier to carry around, though. I love the history of the words--very thorough.

Love it!. Having it on my phone is very convenient. I can actually see my vocabulary expanding.

Kill the splash screen. Its an unnecessary delay to find the word you need. We have no reason to look at the cover for 5 seconds everytime!

Until. Until the OED is affordably on line, we have this. Especially useful to have etymology.

The American Heritage Dictionary is the best American English dictionary. It’s simply the best. Nothing more need be said. There are several decent free dictionaries, but I have never regretted paying for this dictionary.

App needs to be improved. This is my second review. I like my hard bound dictionary better than this app! The app is clunky, hard to navigate, not easy to clear, and overall unappealing. What a disappointment! I am looking at today’s new word, succinc acid. When I tap on it for the definition, the app takes me to the definition of IG. BAD APP!

Enjoyable and easy to use. Absolutely love the word of the day! Have known all so far but it’s still fun to see what’s next.

Great Dictionary. I am thankful that you have published such a remarkable dictionary. I study the Bible a lot and the American Heritage dictionary is a great help in my understanding of ancient words. Keep up the great work!

Very up to par 😎 it’s an awesome and informal app.. I’m using the app more than I expected but I am glad I have it on hand honestly.

All the info I want. This app generally displays all the word info I'm interested in.

This is the best English dictionary around.. I use this app every day, for good definitions and for etymology, and occasionally for the detailed usage notes.

Works well. This app does its job, quickly and easily giving definitions and showing spelling.

Easy to use interface. Ease of use and convenience

Crashes. I tried to update the database for the dictionary. Ever since then the app crashes as soon as I try to open it. Worthless. There has to be a better app for cheaper. Update: I deleted and reinstalled the app. Now it won’t work offline unless I pay for it again! Sorry, I won’t do it. It also constantly asks me to rate it 5 stars. Are you kidding me?

Best dictionary app ever!. Helps me daily with words I need to understand and words I’m using!

Great words, impossible to access to solve a problem. I paid the twenty bucks for the app that won’t work on my phone and there is no customer support I can find anywhere

Not impressed. I love the analog version of this dictionary. Been using it for decades. The app lacks many words. Almost anything I want to look up requires an upgrade. This app is a waste of my time. Websters app is much better. Sad to say as it misses so many words.

Great app. Worth every penny to have the best dictionary at your fingertips. Such a better experience than the free websites that bombard you with ads.

Excellent Resource. I am a Bible teacher & am so glad to have this app to assist with the clarity of my lessons. It is the dictionary of choice at our school.

Slices of *PIE. A great dictionary, made supergreat by the deep etymologies, often leading back to Proto-IndoEuropean. Second only to the tyrant OED, and superior to it in some ways.

Greatest American Dictionary. I’ve used the American Heritage Dictionary for most of my life and am delighted that it’s available online and in an excellent app.

Great App Highly Recommend. Very comprehensive and easy to use. Particularly like the pronunciation feature.

My go-to dictionary app! Love it.. I have quite a few dictionary apps on my phone, this one is my favorite by far.

A brilliant dictionary crippled by a thoughtless app.. The AHD is a brilliant dictionary, but this app is anything but brilliant. Truly hope the publishers take a deep breath, discard the previous efforts, and build a new app from the ground up in keeping with users needs and contemporary interface standards. (Ironically, the childish pop-up asks users to “Leave a 5 Star review”, ignoring the fact that five stars need to be earned, not just asked for)

It hasn’t worked.. I downloaded the dictionary, ready to pay to get the full app, and all I get is a white screen. It doesn’t want to work. Unfortunately, I really need this dictionary. I guess I’ll stick to the online version for now.

Hooray!. Excellent resource; I use it daily. It’s exhaustive, well organized and the sample pronunciation feature is a real plus.

More Work on User Features. On Word-of-the-Day (wotd), clicking on todays word brings up yesterdays?! Id like to see a difficulty selection for the Wofd feature (easy-med-hard-random alphabet, French origin, etc.)

Useful. Use often to check on the meaning of words, when writing.

American Heritage Dictionary. The American Heritage Dictionary in still one of the best resources for writers of fiction and poetry. The writer’s work can always appear fresh, interesting; the messages clearly understood by today’s readers. The dictionary continues to be an excellent resource for me throughout the years. I still give it my highest recommendation to present and future writer’s. May the written word live on, especially in today’s society of had held devices etcétera.... Sincerely, Mariano

Wish there was thesaurus. I love American Heritage dictionary. I wish that while looking at the definition of a word, you could go to a thesaurus for that word.

Invaluable Resource. One of the best authoritative reference sources still available today. Concise and accurate this dictionary includes a spoken pronunciation making it an invaluable resource.

Purchased version isn’t pop up free. As a teacher and writer, I endorse American Heritage. It’s the best dictionary and the app is fantastic except for the constant pop up begging for a five-star review. So, here’s your review. Leave me alone now.

Love This Dictionary!. My one complaint is that it would be nice to be able to copy & paste certain parts of a definition
