At the Ready. The AH dictionary is available at any time to increase your knowledge of our glorious English language. I appreciate the derivation of many words as well as the available synonyms. Very easy to use. I've had hard copies of AHD from the first one issued. Worth the cost.

Meh. It's needs a refresh. It feels like the designers don't actually use the app.

Dégeulasse. The AHD is an excellent dictionary, I own the hard copy, but their digital version could definitely be better. I absolutely hate the color scheme; its bland and does not give the sense of using a scholarly ressource. They could definitely add hyperlinks for the words. I would have more to say but this review was on-the-fly prompted by the incessant pop-up begging for me to review the app. To the developers of this $20 app: would suggest reviewing the $6 app dictionary “le petit Robert” made by the french (c’mon ‘merica). It is superior in every way; please learn from them. If the production of this dictionary app was as good as “le petit Robert” I would happily pay $50 for it.

American Heritage Dictionary. This app, and this dictionary, are in a class by themselves. Thanks to the incomparable work of the late Calvert Watkins, the information with regard to Indo-European roots is both beautiful and illuminating. This dictionary is constantly being brought up to date with regard to contemporary usage. I frequently mention this dictionary in my classes on Greek and Latin language and literature, as well as in my discussions of poetry and prose in English. (Bert Lain)

Disappointing Implementation. I love the AH dictionary and have many copies in paper and electronically. This implementation, though it contains all the content, is disappointing from a user interface perspective. The pestering dialog to rate the app (apparently only as five stars) never gives up even after you have declined to do so many times over years of use. The limited choice of color themes (only four) are all too bright, disallowing any subdued choices. The navigation design is especially poor in the special portions such as trying to browse the appendices or looking through the index of tables: the upper-left back button alternatively brings you back to the location from which you arrived (correct) or simply the item listed immediately before the one you’re currently looking at (incorrect). I hope that this developer can start paying attention to details, or that AH passes its app along to someone else (for which I would happily pay again given this app’s shortcomings)

Poor support. I have bought this program three times. When it works it’s great the first time I upgraded my phone program stopped working never got it working again. The second time I bought version five been working good. I had to get a new iPhone because my phone stopped working. Now the Dictionary doesn’t work again. Contacted support, got one reply, still not working, sent email again, no reply. Program still not working. Wouldn’t be so bad if it had an a costed me $25 each time.

YES!. I finally got my favorite dictionary back when I was using the app thru ENFOUR I was always losing it every time. My iPad had to be updated. I bought it way too many times but now I bought it through MOBI systems and I have had no problems. It’s my good old favorite. Yes I had to pay $20 again but it was worth it. I love this dictionary it’s the best there ever was has the Hebrew and Greek meanings of words pictures it is invaluable to me in my personal study of the Bible and I use this dictionary all the time

No word of the day — PLEASE!. As long as this and other dictionaries continue to issue the aggravating word of the day, I’ll stop using them, which means I’m deleting the app despite my having spent money on it.

have to buy it every 2 years. very nice dictionary but hate to buy it every two years because they just stop to do the updates. So i just bought it for the third time. Hope it will last more this time .....

My Favorite Dictionary. I love this app and use it daily. It’s placed at the bottom right on the screen so that it’s always available. I even have a paper copy on my night table. I have other dictionaries, but this is my favorite.

Frustrating Flaws in App Implementation. Like many others who have commented, I'm a longtime fan of the AH Dictionary, and have had to purchase it numerous times, at considerable expense, as it has migrated from app to app. Like others, I'm very annoyed by the repeated request to rate the app with 5 stars, which is absolutely ridiculous for a responsible software maker. The bigger problem, though, is that while traveling in Europe recently I discovered that the app refused to open if I wasn't logged on to the Internet...which defeats the whole purpose of carrying an offline dictionary on one's phone. PLEASE allow this app to work even when one is connected to the Internet!!! This is a HUGE bug that truly needs fixing.

Great BUT.... The pronunciation doesn't work, even though the symbol is present. Other than that, so far so good.

Annoying begging for 5-star review. Too often, when opened this app presents a pop-up that says, “Enjoying this dictionary? Please support us with your 5-star rating on App Store!” with a “RATE 5 STARS” button underneath. The only way to escape -- to do what you opened the app to do, use the dictionary -- is to tap the small “X” close icon at the upper right of the pop-up. Having done that, one has the startup page, which contains a “Rate Our App” section inviting a rating, with 5 blank stars underneath as if you could tap any of them. But if you tap any of them, the result is the same obnoxious “5 STARS” pop-up. This scheme annoyed me enough to motivate me to take the time to create this 1-star review.

So far so good. Great app. The paid version is worth it.

Old version much better. Thought I'd try newer version since option to update was no longer provided. Bad decision, this has too many distractions, I just wanted a simple dictionary! Going back to old version. Wish there was an app that would remove update notifications for these instances!

Best English Dictionary. I've used this dictionary for many decades through multiple editions and am delighted with the electronic version, which makes access even easier. Its special strengths, beyond very well thought out definitions, are excellent attention to etymology and explicit discussions of usage panel recommendations and sometimes disagreements. I was disappointed a year ago that my purchase did not carry over to a new iPad and I had to buy it again, and a third purchase came with a new iPhone. The management company could solve this only if I could come up with my original receipts and it wasn't worth searching for them. That's flaky, to be sure, but the quality of the dictionary is worth it anyway.

Great dictionary. No complaints. This dictionary works as I desire.

Good dictionary. Like the pronunciation feature, the images if applicable and been able to jump to words in the definition.

Again?!?!!. They keep making me buy this program. Probably I never will again. This is maybe the fourth or fifth time. Not even a discount for owning a previous version. And they still keep asking me to rate the program on the opening page - just moved from three to two stars for this.

Annoying pop-up. The app is fine, but for one “feature”: every time you open it, a pop-up appears harassing you to rate the app five stars. This tactic makes the whole experience feel chintzy, even embarrassing. Shame on the developers for tainting what is otherwise a stellar publication.

Word origins resource is outstanding. Much more than I expected

Worth the while. This dictionary respects and reflects American usage, while also illuminating a window into how lots of words got to where they are now. I also enjoy the pronunciation and thesaurus features of this app.

Highly Recommend. This is the dictionary recommended by the beloved Mr. Robert Holladay, World Literature and Classic Film Society teacher. I took one with me to college and have favored it ever since. This digital version lives up to the American Heritage standard. It is wonderful to have a copy of this great book as close as our devices no matter where we are.

Falls short if expectations. Had great expectations for this app, however, I was let down. Some worlds are missing origin explanations. Pronunciation icon does not work. I have compared entry descriptions to a free, online program and the free, online program is more complete. I would look for another app to spend money on next time. Disappointing.

Eclectic. American Heritage provides an up to date experience for word searchers, unlike the staid attitudes of other dictionaries.

Great dictionary but crashes now. This app crashes on iphone 12 and ios 14.1

HMS Beagle. I’ve found “American Heritage” to be superior to Webster’s, and this EXCELLENT app is a must for serious readers; I refer to it often.

Redesign. Just don’t like the redesign near as much as the old. Upon launching the screen choices are more about selling the app to other (rate the app and share with friends). Generally speaking I want my dictionary to be a dictionary. Not some social app.

Outstanding. When I look up any word I always understand with accuracy what the meaning of the word is. Explain what part of the speech is in a convenient and easy way. Fantastic.

Really a great dictionary. But annoying that it keeps asking me to rate. Turn this feature off!

Favorite words disappear. I like to save words to review the definitions later, and there is a place in this app to save words: “favorites”. However, the list seems to get deleted for no reason every now and then. The Webster app does not do this. I prefer the American heritage dictionary over Webster but the disappearing favorite words is a dealbreaker.

Annoying pop-ups every time you open. I literally was forced to review this app because of a pop-up that will not go away. What a disingenuous (to use a word) way to “earn” a reputation. Folks, the AHD content is excellent and licensed to a variety of apps. Some apps are designed better than others to deliver the same licensed content. This one annoys me. Even though it does have some good features.

Intentional app rating scheme is unforgivable. This is about the sixth time I've bought the American Heritage dictionary as a book, a paperback, 30 floppy discs, a book with an app on CD, an iOS app, and now the newer iOS app since the previous version "aged out." Sadly, I bought it a few days after iOS 10 — and it won't run. I hope its fixed soon so I can concentrate on having a high quality, offline, robustly featured dictionary of authority at my fingertips. Update: The app was updated to run in iOS 10, allowing me to use it and to discover an unforgivable characteristic of the app. Nearly every time I go to use it, a pop up appears over the screen; it gives you two options: rate the app five stars, or choose "not yet." In other words, it presents a situation where you can give the app the highest possible review, or no review at that moment — meaning that you'll be asked this question over and over again. I assume the only way to turn this irritating thing off is to rate the app five stars. It doesn't deserve five stars — for this one "feature" alone, it deserves zero stars. Shame on Houghton Mifflin, the dictionary's publisher, for allowing MobiSystem, Inc. to denigrate their reputable dictionary with such a cheap ploy in a premium-priced app.

So far so good.. I’ve only had this app for a short period, but I have always been a fan of the American Heritage Dictionary. The word histories are great. Just yesterday, I used it around the family dinner table when my kids had a question about how a skillet was different than a pan. I grew up in the Midwest using the word skillet and now live in the northeast where the word pan (or frying pan) is used. I didn’t know if skillet and pan were the same or if maybe a skillet was a specific type of pan. AHD’s word history resolved this for us. Look it up yourself to find out the answer :-)

Great dictionary, ugly interface.. Title says it all... the interface to the dictionary is awkward to use and seems to always be asking for a review.

Great Dictionary. Miles above other dictionaries, but new interface is a step back.

Very nice dictionary. The AHD has accompanied me since 2015, when I was preparing for my English exams. It is very nice. One suggestion for the app might be: can the “Add to Favorites” icon be displayed on the top menu, rather then being hidden in the foldable menu? I really use function a lot. Thank you.

Nothing like It. And now it is even batter. I have relied on American Heritage fir over 50 years. This App raises the bar.

Great dictionary. Great app.. American heritage is one of my favorite dictionaries. So I am very happy it’s available on the Apple devices. This app doesn’t have silly bugs. It’s very stable. Good product and I think the $20 for this dictionary was money well spent.

Word of day not interesting. I don’t find word of day helpful in building my vocabulary

Boom. Rated.. I hate the fact that I have to keep buying this dictionary. As a Dictionary it is really wonderful… I use it a ton. However, every time they have a new version, you have to buy the new version. I'm addicted enough to keep buying it, but I feel extremely taken advantage of every time.

Decent but not complete. Your word of the day option, which doesn’t always fire daily, continues to display the same word of the day: jig (2)

Useful. It is certainly useful for those who are simply looking for an American heritage dictionary. As an app, it's features are lacking. For example, an older version (around iOS 5) allowed quizzes with your bookmarks and games. Design wise, there are two different buttons for audio playback? Unless I'm missing something there. Would like to see some more features for a $20 app. Though having the American heritage dictionary in your pocket is great. I haven't experienced any crashes on iOS 9.

Great dictionary, annoying app. My fourth purchase of this dictionary. Hate being prompted to rate I 5 stars every time.

Great but has its errors. This is a great app. I love the ability to search the terms offline. However, there is one error that disturbs me that has resulted in the 3-star rating. I save a particular term in my favorites. When I retrieve the term from the favorites, it shows a similar term (e.g. Impart instead of interpose) rather than the actual saved word. This is frustrating especially since I paid money to download the full version. Please resolve this issue so I can increase the rating.

Good App. Incessant and annoying prompts to rate.. Excellent dictionary. Pretty nice app. Positive feelings about the app, however, are destroyed by the annoying prompts to rate the app. It seems every time I open it, I'm forced to click through a prompt to review the app. I'm working and want a definition. I don't want to be slowed down by intrusive prompts. I've finally given in and am reviewing in the hopes that the prompts will go away.

Good Helpful. I find this dictionary very helpful. It is always there whenever I need it.

Awesome. This dictionary provides comprehensive etymological explanations of words.

Oil Great dictionary. The ability to speak a word you don’t know how to spell is awesome but the navigation could use some work. Also the thesaurus doesn’t seem to work. Otherwise it is a great tool.

The Usage Panel Makes This Dictionary Outstanding.. You learn more than definitions; you get insight into how words are used and applied.

Keep asking for five stars every day. Wow i paid for this app. Quit harassing me!!!!!!

American Heritage. The word of the day should be useful, not random names and words that no one has ever even heard of, nor wants to hear of! It's a waste of my screen time!

Great App, BUT.... This is by far my favorite dictionary app, BUT this is the third time I’ve had to purchase it. I paid $29.99 for AHD Fourth Edition in 2008. After an iOS update a few years later, the app stopped working. I eventually broke down and paid $24.99 for AHD Fifth Edition in 2014. Then, with the release of iOS 10, AHD5 stopped working as well. I contacted the developer by email and through their website to ask whether they would release an update for AHD5 to make it compatible with iOS 10 but it’s been two weeks with no response. Again, AHD is a great app but it may ultimately cost you much more than the current $19.99 if you want to use it through multiple iOS updates ($74.97 in my case).

Ok. Ok

Good. Good

app keeps harassing for rating !. app keeps harassing for rating !

Pronunciation speaker does not work. Also the thesaurus is not intuitive, and the diagrams, which is why I bought the app, are not as good as the previous version. Also, why do you have two apps exactly the same price, look, etc. but one with no ability to get diagrams. This forced me to pay double what I should for this dictionary. Please fix these things and I will be sure to give you a 5 star rating on the next update.

for pestiferius cadging 5-stars. please stop begging for 5-stars

Write a review. Every time I open the app, it asks me to review it.

Good, not great. Good, not great. Nominal, not remarkable. Soluble, not satisfying.

Great App.... just remove the rating pop-up and it'll be golden.

Rediculous. Don't bother. Get the Webster's instead.

Developer not interested in - or incapable of - addressing customer support request. UPDATE ll: rather than give users the full value for their purchase with continuous updates, Mobisystems have decided to release a ‘Fifth Edition’, for a significant additional fee. It is the same app, people. There is not enough additional content to justify publishing another addition, and you can bet that they haven’t updated the feature-set. If there is, and if they have, then they are obligated to pass those improvements on to existing customers. Shameless. One star. FOR THOSE WHO ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY GETTING FULL (or any) VALUE FROM THIS APP: UPDATE: I have discovered the solution to the issues I was having - blank screen on iPhone7, and automatic crashing on iPad mini: go to 'settings' in the app sidebar; turn on 'Enable offline content' (if you aren't hooked up to the internet, it won't allow you to initiate this operation, but once you are connected to wifi, you can proceed); under the button you just pressed, you will see in red letters, 'downloading'; after a minute or so, you will be informed that you can use the app offline. The app works fine now. I don't understand why the developer is so disinterested in helping customers who ask for help, but I suspect it's a cultural/language issue: Mobi Systems seems to be a Russian venture. 3 stars for zero customer support; app is functional, after self-directed troubleshooting; Mobisystems shouldn't make downloaded content optional when they clearly don't have the capacity or infrastructure to support server-side content delivery or troubleshooting support. ORIGINAL (albeit 3rd version) REVIEW: One Star: Developer was happy to respond to my initial 5-star review (prompted by their incessant request, in-app, for 5-star review); Subsequently, the app stopped working, both on iPhone7 and iPad mini - I revised my review to 1 star, requested refund and apology, and sent customer service request, which was ignored except the developer shrugged and told me they didn't have the ability to give me a refund. Somehow developer has managed to have my review removed from this page. Very disappointed, given the expense of this app and my heavy dependence on the previous, ADHD4 app, not developed by Mobi, which probably explains why it is still working well for the most part after years of use.

Excellent. Best dictionary app. All word lovers should have it.

Happy to have any version.... ...of the great AHD 5. In an earlier review I complained about the absence of notes from the Usage Panel, but I just found one for "satrap." I look forward to more. Add one star--the review app won't let me.

Great!. Great!

Audio files need improving. Hands down AHD is my Dictionary of choice. However, the audio pronunciation files in this app need to be improved. The audio quality is fuzzy. They are substandard, especially compared to those in the Miriam-Webster dictionary app.

Good app. Good app

Could be better. Had the current developer simply included all the features from the previous developer, this would remain a superior product. Mobisystems is either unwilling or unable to include the word quiz component which was present in the previous software developer’s version. It stands to reason, the people willing to spend the money on this dictionary are word aficionados and as such appreciate the quiz feature. Furthermore, the word of the day feature is shamefully lacking in quality and seems comically random. The splash screen insisting on a 5 star rating is relentless. I certainly hope that screen will go away after I send this review!

Love the dictionary. Hate the happy stars

STOP ASKING ME TO RATE THIS APP. Extremely annoying.

Wonderful APP. This is the best dictionary!

Pronunciation Speaker. The previous version is crashing. And the new version pronunciation speaker is not working.

Great dictionary, but.... Super annoying how often it asks you give it a 5 start rating.

Poor Audio Quality. Very poor Audio Quality. Audio recording is probably recorded @ 8kbps bit rate. Lowest quality for such an expensive app.

5 star rating. 5 star rating

Best Bet. The definitive dictionary for American English.

AD. Absolutely the best!

Annoying. The fact that one has to buy this app again after major OS upgrades (e.g. from iOS 9 to iOS 10) is highly unusual, especially since its features and content really don't change. It's like renting the app, not buying it. And as others have noted, the frequent pop-up asking me to rate the app 5-stars is really annoying. I will never rate such an app 5-stars.

Disappointed. This app won’t open at all

Annoying. I owned the previous American Heritage dictionary and it was superb. This update, for which they charged another $20, dissappoints in so many ways. Especially annoying is the constant bombardment within the app to rate it five stars! This after I paid $20 for the version without advertisements! This is ridiculous!

Windows. I prefer Windows version

American Heritage dictionary. Great!!
